Переслать - Honorable Mentions Of 2012: 'The Raid: Redemption'
You've seen our Top Ten of 2012 list, but now let's take a look back at the movies that just missed the cut. These are our Honorable Mentions of 2012.
Here's a fun game to play: tell your friends that you want to watch a movie. When they ask what you have in mind, tell them it's an Indonesian movie, a film that only got a small release in the States. They'll likely scoff at your suggestion, but when you insist, they'll probably give in. Then watch as the next 100 minutes unfold and your friends' faces melt in awe of the incomparable action flick, "The Raid: Redemption."
From the mind of Welsh-born writer-director Gareth Evans, "The Raid" takes our conception of what a modern action film is supposed to be and turns it on its head. There's no CGI, the best action doesn't involve guns, and the toughest guy in the room doesn't have muscles bursting out of his greasy tank top. His name is Iko Uwais, a martial artist, and by the end of the movie, you'll be convinced he's something more than human.
The story is as straight forward as it get. An elite SWAT team gets word that a notorious drug lord is hulled up inside a high rise full of thugs, so they go in to get him. But guess what. When the criminal mastermind gets word of the raid, he locks down the block and puts a price on each copper's head.
So the team is left to fight their way out by any means necessary. In this case, "any means necessary" meeting unbelievable martial arts skills. It is no understatement when we say that the third best fight scene in "The Raid" is better than any other combat sequence in any other movie this year. It's that good.
While "The Raid" didn't exactly set the world on fire—as it had every right to—it was seen by enough of the right people to keep the flame going. Evans is currently prepping a sequel, "Berandal," which will also star Uwais.
Finally, tell your friends "You're welcome."
Переслать - The Black List Scripts We Want To See
By Hannah Soo Park
What do "Argo," "Looper" and "Chronicle" all have in common? Besides the fact that they were among this year's stand-out movies, all three films were once lonely scripts floating around on the famed Black List, an annual compilation of the most favored unproduced screenplays. Based on the suggestions of over 290 execs, the List requires that scripts have at least six mentions to join the ranks, and is often a predictor of what we'll see next in the line-up of forthcoming films.
From hot sports drama to sweeping biopics, 2012's List brings in the usual suspects, along with a few unexpected gems we actually want to see get made. Here, we voice off on our top picks and potential casting choices—in other words, behold: our shameless "Make this movie, please!" memo for Hollywood.
"Rodham" (Young Il Kim)
Logline: During the height of the Watergate scandal, rising star Hillary Rodham is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon, but she soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for Bill Clinton, her former boyfriend who now teaches law in Arkansas.
Why We Want To See It: One of the more exciting biopics on the list, this screenplay follows a side of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that we're not all too familiar with: her younger—and possibly scared—newbie self. And how can we resist a script that plays out the early days of Billary?
Who Should Star: Playing the 27-year-old Hillary Clinton could be a perfect break out opportunity for up-and-comers—like Elizabeth Olsen, Alison Pill or Mamie Gummer—who'd nail the slightly awkward nature that the younger, less-experienced Hillary Rodham might've had."Me & Earl & The Dying Girl" (Jesse Andrews)
Logline: Based on Andrews' eponymous novel, a quirky high school student who enjoys making films sparks a friendship with a classmate dying of leukemia.
Why We Want To See It: We warmed up to teen-centric dramas with this year's gem "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," and we would be delighted to see the genre take flight again by the way of "Me & Earl & The Dying Girl." The story, which takes you inside the mind of a 17-year-old-boy, is reminiscent of "Perks" with its unconventional yet heart-filled plot.
Who Should Star: Seeing as this plays out to be an indie John Huges-style drama, we imagine the leading cast to an eccentric, individualistic bunch. If we're going with the obvious choice, Michael Cera (the poster child of "quirky") could take on the sarcastic, self-deprecating narrator Greg, while Elle Fanning or Analeigh Tipton are certainly suited to play the fragile, leukemia-stricken Rachel."Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile" (Michael Werwie)
Logline: Based on a true story, a promising young law student fights an oppressive legal system and growing public scrutiny when his routine traffic stop snowballs into shocking criminal charges, imprisonment, daring escapes and ultimately acting as his own attorney in a nationally televised murder trial.
Why We Want To See It: Aside from its self-explanatory title, we're also drawn to the fact that this story sounds like a superhero tale (Note key words: "fight," "stop," "daring")—just take out the superhero part and add a feisty young lawyer type. Plus, the idea of a falsely accused man fighting to defend himself in the name of justice should make for decent courtroom drama, suitable for a rising young actor.
Who Should Star: The unnamed promising young law student is all who's in question here, and we're already imagining superhero alum Andrew Garfield, who (bonus alert) has also already fought a courtroom battle in "The Social Network," as the tormented, innocent man under trial."Come and Find Me" (Zack Whedon)
Logline: When his girlfriend goes missing, David must track down her whereabouts after he realizes she's not who she was pretending to be.
Why We Want To See It: We're curious to see how Zack Whedon's (yes, of the Joss) first feature film screenplay would come to life. He's already had writing gigs with "Rubicon," "Fringe" and "Deadwood," and has also written a few comic books, perhaps proving that he's got the imagination for, ultimately, the big screen.
Who Should Star: Plot details are pretty vague, but we're going throw a few worthy names out there: Chris Hemsworth (a Joss Whedon alum!) and thriller fixture Amanda Seyfried for the main character and his girlfriend."Hey, Stella!" (Tom Shephard)
Logline: The story of how Marlon Brando won the role of Stanley Kowalski in Elia Kazan's broadway play "A Streetcar Named Desire."
Why We Want To See It: Because no one's attempted to play Brando since his death in 2004. And the script seems to take an on-set approach, like "My Week With Marilyn," which focused on Marilyn Monroe's insecurities behind the camera. Similarly, "Hey, Stella!" might shine light on Brando's notorious on-set method acting antics.
Who Should Star: As far as looks go, it's already been settled that Tom Hardy is a doppelganger for Brando. Aside from his constant comparisons to the late and great actor, he's also been known to bust out the classic method acting mumble in between takes—a "technique" Brando branded himself—so if you don't mind, we're resting our case on this one.Переслать - This Is Judd Apatow, Your Next MTV 'Pioneer'
Without qualification, Judd Apatow has changed the face of modern comedy. His brand of provocative yet sincere humor, seen in his own films ("Knocked Up," "This Is 40") and those of the talents he fostered like Seth Rogen, has become the standard for successful comedy in film.
That's why it should be a no brainer that Apatow has been chosen as the next speaker in the MTV "Pioneers" series, which highlights those who have altered the landscape of culture in the 21st century.
Apatow's talk with MTV News' Josh Horowitz will stream live on MTV.com tomorrow, Wednesday (December 19) at 4 p.m. ET. You have an opportunity to submit a question for Apatow, by tweeting to @MTVNews and using the hashtag #askjudd. So get your questions in now!
Переслать - Poll: Best Archer of 2012
You read all about it on basically every news site and pop culture blog: 2012 was the year of the cinematic archer. Every big movie had a character stringing up a bow and arrow and taking down enemies from afar.
But who was the greatest movie archer of year? Is it one of the heavy-hitters like Hawkeye and Katniss? Or does your taste favor the Pixar variety?
It's time to voice your opinion in the poll below!
Katniss Everdeen - "The Hunger Games"
"The Girl on Fire" or "The Girl That Set Off A Million Trend Pieces About Archery," Katniss Everdeen is most likely the reason we're having this discussion in the first place. It also helps to know that Jennifer Lawrence has some serious real-life archery skills.
Clint "Hawkeye" Barton - "The Avengers"
No one comes close to touching Hawkeye when it comes to accuracy. The man shot an arrow from a Quinjet and made it curve around the Hellicarrier, having it land perfectly in a point of vulnerability. Let's not forget his little flash drive arrow trick. It downloaded a virus. A computer virus from an arrow.
Merida - "Brave"
The obvious winner in the hair department, Merida from "Brave" showed off her archery skills to prove that she didn't need any suitors fighting for her hand. Well, that's certainly one way to prove a point.
William - "Snow White and the Huntsman"
It's a little surprising when the Prince Charming of the story gets the short end of the stick, but in "SWATH," the Huntsman got the title treatment and the affection of the fair Snow White. To compensate, William got some sweet bow and arrow skills.
Theseus - "Immortals"
This one could be filed under "Who now?" but "Immortals" was an actual movie that came out this year, and it starred the new Superman, Henry Cavill, as the legendary warrior Theseus, who happened to have a magical bow.
Переслать - Katy Perry Takes Center Stage In 'The Smurfs 2' Trailer
The Smurfs have returned, and this time they're getting naughty.
The first trailer for "The Smurfs 2" has hit the web, and shows the introduction of new, bad creatures called the Naughties. Hank Azaria's Gargamel is back and trying to defeat the Smurfs, so he's decided to create his own small, Smurf-like creations to take them down. The Naughties, voiced by Christina Ricci and JB Smoove, seem like they're able to do the unthinkable: Make Smurfette go bad.
Watch the trailer after the jump!
Do we need another "Smurfs" movie? Probably not, but at least this sequel ensures one thing: More Neil Patrick Harris in our lives. He only gets a brief appearance at the end of the trailer but it's enough for us. That man can make anything -- even the first "Smurfs" movie -- more enjoyable.
Based on this first trailer, "The Smurfs 2" actually doesn't look that bad. Sure, it's geared more towards kids than adults, but the plot seems solid and the talent involved is at least worth a watch. Considering a third "Smurfs" movie is reportedly on the way, we might as well get used to the series while we can.
"The Smurfs 2" brings together the voice talents of Ricci, Smoove, Alan Cumming, Anton Yelchin, Katy Perry (as Smurfette, of course), Fred Armisen, George Lopez, John Oliver, Jonathan Winters and Alan Cumming. The film also stars Azaria, Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara and Brendan Gleeson in live action roles. It's due out on July 31, 2013.

Переслать - Josh Hutcherson Set To Join Pablo Escobar Film 'Paradise Lost'
By Hannah Soo Park
From The Capitol…to Colombia? Josh Hutcherson is still busy filming "Catching Fire," the much-anticipated second installment in the "Hunger Games" series, but he's already looking to line up his next acting gig.
Deadline reports that the "The Hunger Games" star is in talks to join Benicio Del Toro in "Paradise Lost," a based-on-a-true-story film that follows notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. Hutcherson will play a young Irish surfer, Nick, who visits his older brother in Colombia, where he ends up falling in love with a girl named Maria. Sounds pretty straight forward, right? But she's not just any girl—it turns out that her uncle is Del Toro's Escobar. And that's where we start thinking this one won't end well.
Not to be mistaken for the Milton-inspired "Paradise Lost," which was nixed by Legendary Pictures earlier this year, the forthcoming movie was written and will be directed by actor Andrea di Stefano, in his first directorial effort. Di Stefano was recently seen in Ang Lee's "Life of Pi."
While Hutcherson has reportedly committed to the "Journey 2" sequel, this might be his first major career move since he signed on as Peeta Mellark in the lucrative "Hunger Games" series. He's also slated to lend his voice to the forest-set animated film "Epic," which will hit theaters in May.
"Paradise Lost" is scheduled to begin filming in Panama in March of next year, after Hutcherson wraps up "Catching Fire" and before the two-part "Mockingjay" begins production.
Переслать - 'Expendables 3' May Add Jackie Chan And Hopefully A Blooper Reel
When it comes to "The Expendables," there has become this universal wish list for action stars everyone wants to see join the ranks. There have been talks of Wesley Snipes and Nic Cage and Harrison Ford, but there's now good word on a great get for the series.
Speaking with Yahoo!, Jackie Chan revealed that he may join Sly Stallone and the gang for "The Expendables 3." According to the action legend, Stallone asked him to join the second movie, but he couldn't due to scheduling conflicts.
"Sly had invited me to be in Expendables 2 but I was too busy filming 'CZ12' and couldn't make a commitment to the film," Chan said. "But he did extend his invitation to the third movie, which I agreed on the condition that I will be appearing as more than just a minor role with a few scenes."
Chan said that he hoped "Expendables 3" would take on his traditional "buddy-buddy" format, so you know what that means....BLOOPERS!
