  • Honorable Mentions Of 2012: 'Magic Mike'

    Magic Mike

You've seen our Top Ten of 2012 list, but now let's take a look back at the movies that just missed the cut. These are our Honorable Mentions of 2012.

It's certainly not rare for a trailer or a television ad to misrepresent a movie for the sake of marketing. Last year, "Drive" became a generic "Fast and Furious" knock-off, and this year, "John Carter" turned into "Random Jumping Man." But perhaps the most deceptive marketing campaign of all goes to "Magic Mike" aka "That Stripper Movie," which in all honesty is one of the best movies of the year.

But, yes, there is a lot of stripping in this movie, and yet you could sub out any frivolous career/lifestyle choice for the g-strings and umbrellas, and you would end up with roughly the same movie. Albeit, it would be a much less entertaining film, but the beats would have the same impact nonetheless. The real story here is that of a boy trying to become a man, in spite of his previous actions and current lifestyle. Mike's journey is one we've seen a million times in a million different arenas, but the point is that we haven't seen it from the perspective of the Kings of Tampa.

In addition to the novel setting, what sells the movie is the stylized, yet realistic look from director Steven Soderbergh and some of the best naturalistic acting in a mainstream movie this year. If you're wondering what people mean when they talk about Channing Tatum's meteoric rise to stardom, "Magic Mike" offers more than enough evidence, and it's not for the reasons you're thinking about. (Well, it is, just a little.)

Tatum is natural charmer, and his Mike exudes charisma. In a time of rather dubious young male "stars," he has something to offer that's different from every other set of abs. He's only made better by the strong supporting cast around him, including Matthew McConaughey, continuing his hot streak, and Cody Horn, doing her best Kristen Stewart impersonation.

The underlying sadness of all of this is that Soderbergh plans to retire from theatrical films after next year's "Side Effects." Considering the work he has done in the last two years alone, it's tough to imagine a near future where we can't look forward to what this guy has coming next.

  • 'Oblivion' Director Joseph Kosinski Hasn't Heard Anything About 'Star Wars'

Among the names mentioned when Disney first took control of LucasFilm and the future of "Star Wars" was Joseph Kosinski, the visual stylist who brought "Tron" and The Grid back to the big screen.

MTV News recently got on the phone with Kosinski to talk about his latest film, "Oblivion," and naturally, the conversation drifted to the continuing "Star Wars" saga.

"I have not, I have not," he said. "For me, I feel like, between 'Tron' and 'Oblivion,' I've gotten to fulfill my 'Star Wars' fantasies, in a way. It's flattering of you to mention, but like everyone else, I'm interested to see where they take it. I actually know the writer [Michael Arndt] on it very well; he's a fantastic writer, and I think he's perfect for the job, so I'm sure it will be a great story, and I can't wait to see what they do with it."

While he may not be involved, like any fan of the series, Kosinski hopes that whoever takes over puts his or her own spin on the franchise and Lucas' universe.

"It is tough. I mean, whoever does it hopefully will have the freedom to put their own stamp on it and present a unique vision," he said. "Hopefully it will look and be something that no one's expecting as the first ones were when they came out in the late '70s. It's a tricky challenge, but they've got really good people on it, so I'm sure they'll figure something out."

Speaking of his own sci-fi franchise, last week saw major developments in a second "Tron" sequel. Garrett Hedlund confirmed his involvement after Disney brought on Jesse Wigutow to rewrite the script. Kosinski, who's already on-board, had this to say about the new film:

"We've got an idea for the next movie that's really exciting to me. I mean, obviously, the only reason to go back would be if we could do something spectacular and really push the ideas forward that we had established in 'Legacy.' We have an idea and an approach and a way into it that I'm really excited about, and now it's about execution on the level of the script," he said. "So working hard on that in the background, and hopefully that'll all come together.

"It's still the same plan in that 'Tron 3' would deliver on the promises set up at the end of 'Legacy' in different ways," he continued. "You look at what happened in the closing scenes of 'Legacy'; I think it sets a clear direction for what could happen in the next chapter."

  • 'Hangover Part III': New Photos And Details From The Director

    Hangover

    By Hannah Soo Park

A bachelor party or wedding may no longer be in the works, but it looks like the Wolfpack is heading back to Las Vegas to manage a little mischief in the upcoming third installment of "The Hangover."

Entertainment Weekly revealed not only two new photos from the film—including one where we see Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha), walking through Vegas in a Fab-Four-style line-up—but also a few clues on its mysterious storyline, as dropped by the movie's director, Todd Phillips.

Since we haven't heard much in regards to plot details since the film began its production, Phillips' hints are the first real evidence as to what the gang might be up to next in their next chaotic adventure.

The director told EW that the movie, which is reportedly structured differently than the previous two films, is "a fitting end to this three-part opera of mayhem and bad decisions." Not too surprising of a reveal, considering the group's habitual boozy antics, but we also know that "Part III" has a little heart in Galifianakis' character, Alan, and kicks off with the funeral of his father (Jeffrey Tambor). "'The Hangover Part III' will be Alan's story," Phillips said. "He's going through a crisis after the death of his father and the Wolfpack is all he has."

The second released image of a menacing Ken Jeong dressed in sheriffs' garb and handling a gun confirms the return of Leslie "Mr. Chow" Chow—but according to Phillips, this time around, he's going to be "darker than ever."

"The Hangover Part III" is scheduled to open in theaters on May 24, 2013.

  • Daniel Radcliffe Shows His Poetic Side In 'Kill Your Darlings' Still

    Darlings

Harry who? Daniel Radcliffe is showing off a whole new look in a new image from the upcoming indie "Kill Your Darlings," and we love how far he's come from his "Harry Potter" days.

"Kill Your Darlings" will make its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and the website for the fest has a new image from the film. It shows Radcliffe as a young Allen Ginsberg, Dane DeHaan as Lucien Carr and Jack Huston as Jack Kerouac, but its Radcliffe who disappears most into his character.

When we talked to Huston recently about his work on "Kill Your Darlings," he praised Radcliffe for his tenacious work ethic. He teased that Radcliffe's performance is going to be nothing like what fans have seen before.

"I think people are going to be shocked about how good he is," Huston told MTV News. "He's really coming into himself. It's very hard getting out of the shadow of something like 'Harry Potter' because... it's as big as it gets in the film world. I think he really wants to be considered the actor he's capable of actually becoming. I'm happy that I got to work with him and actually see him do what he's capable of doing."

"Kill Your Darlings" tells the story of poet Allen Ginsberg's life when he attends Columbia University in 1944. There he meets Carr, Kerouac and William Burroughs, but when one of their friends is found dead, it changes all of the artists' lives forever.

  • First 'Hobbit' Film Breaks December Box Office Record

    FROM MTV NEWS

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" was, predictably, the one to rule them all at the weekend box office. The first leg of Peter Jackson's fantasy trilogy took in a record-breaking $87.4 million, the largest December three-day open of all time.

The "Lord of the Rings" prequel beat out previous champ "I Am Legend," which held the record at $77.2 million, and former series leader "The Return of the King," which bowed at $73.3 million. It should be noted, however, that IMAX and 3-D surcharges factored heavily in the record, since total ticket sales for "An Unexpected Journey" fell short of both films.

"Rise of the Guardians" continued to hold-on in second place, taking in an additional $7.4 million, with "Lincoln" close behind at $7.2 million.

Head over to MTV News for your full box office report.
