  • 'Glee' Casting News: Whoopi Goldberg, Lindsay Lohan Up For Roles

    by Fallon Prinzivalli

We know you "Glee" fans are anxiously awaiting the return of Fox's musical series next month. After all, the last episode to air back in February left viewers with a few very big questions: Will Rachel and Finn really tie the knot? Does Quinn survive the car accident? Is Sue Sylvester actually pregnant or is the maternal kindness simply an act? To whet your appetite while you wait, we have some exciting news!

As you'll recall, Rachel and Kurt spent plenty of time anxiously checking their mailboxes for letters from the New York Academy of the Dramatic Arts, better known as NYADA. They did indeed receive them, and as it turns out, their acceptance into the college now relies on a decision from Whoopi Goldberg.

Whoopi has signed on to play Carmen Tibideaux, a professor at NYADA who will travel to Ohio to audition Kurt and Rachel. TVLine reports that "The View" host is scheduled to appear in three episodes starting May 1. Her character is described as a "theatrical grande dame." We hope this means she'll be impressed with the incredible talent of our favorite eccentric duo and not view them with such a critical light. It sounds like it could go either way!

Also in talks to join the cast is Linsday Lohan. According to TVLine, if she signs on, Lindsay will guest star as herself on one of the season's final episodes, judging performances at Nationals. We hope the jab the show made at her mom in their post-Super Bowl episode doesn't turn her against our beloved New Directions.

    Only two more weeks, Gleeks!

Are you excited about Whoopi and Lindsay appearing on "Glee"? What are your hopes for the series when it returns? Tell us everything in the comments and on Twitter!

  • Shailene Woodley: We're Obsessing Over The 'Secret Life' Star In This Week's Girl Crush

Actress Shailene Woodley rode a wave of recognition this awards season for her turn as angsty teen Alexandra King in the Oscar-winning film "The Descendants," but TV audiences know the 20-year-old best as teen mom Amy from four seasons of ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager." The series returned last night with its spring premiere, and to celebrate, we're naming Shailene this week's Girl Crush.

While we had Shailene on our couch recently, we had to ask the starlet who her own Girl Crush is. "Jennifer Garner," she said without hesitation. "I think she's awesome. She's so philanthropic, and I think that the way she's raising her children is really great, especially with the amount of spotlight on them. She just seems like a really down-to-earth, awesome human being, who's doing really awesome philanthropic things for the world around her."

Shailene's no stranger to charitable acts, herself. Along with mom, Lori Woodley, the actress co-founded All It Takes, a foundation focusing on environmental integrity, youth leadership and health awareness, which she launched at this year's Vanities party. Clearly, Shailene doesn't just talk the talk—one of the many reasons she's this week's Girl Crush.

  • Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart Spotted On Katy Perry Movie Set

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with staff members. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

Holy smokes! On- and off-screen loves Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were spotted in an L.A. back alley Monday night, puffing on a few cigarettes with friends. Par for the course, right? Well, reports indicate that the "Twilight" twosome were taking a break from...the set of Katy Perry's upcoming movie "Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D"!

The question is: Were Rob and Kristen just visiting their singer pal while she worked, or should we—fingers crossed!—expect a sparkling cameo in the rock doc? While the bulk of "Part of Me" footage will likely come from Katy's last tour, it stands to reason producers might need to film a few pick-up shots and/or confessionals here and there. (Maybe Katy read our advice about including famous friends in the film...)

Regardless, the cute couple have pretty packed movie schedules this year. Kristen will soon ramp up promotion for "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "On the Road," while Rob will keep busy supporting "Bel Ami" and "Cosmopolis." And, of course, the pair will hit the publicity trail together in November for the long-awaited "Twilight" finale "Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

Click on the image above to see even more images of Robsten in our Spotted! gallery.

Do you hope Rob and Kristen are somehow involved with Katy's movie? Tell us what you think in the comments and on Twitter!

  • 'Hunger Games' To Air On ABC Family

Hunger GamesCome 2014, you can gobble up "The Hunger Games" on ABC Family. The network, already home to all things "Harry Potter," has won the rights to air the box-office smash, as well as its planned sequel, "Catching Fire."

"This tremendous opening weekend reinforces what we have already learned—a powerful heroine, themes of romance and iconic characters will keenly resonate with our Millennial audience," ABC Family president Michael Riley said in a statement to Aceshowbiz.com regarding the mega-acquisition.

With a huge opening weekend behind it and tons of buzz surrounding sequels, we have no doubt DVRs will be set in droves come 2014. (Which, if our estimates are correct, could be the year "Mockingjay" hits theaters.)

But how does "The Hunger Games" stack up against ABC Family's potential 2014 programming? Quite well, actually. The network is kind of all about girl power. And since we imagine that by 2014 we'll be watching "Pretty Little Liars: The College Years" (where "A" incorporates honors calculus and Nietzsche references into her texts) and "The Lying Games: We're Finally Telling The Truth" (no explanation necessary, we hope), we'll be hungry for some flavor in the form of Katniss and company.

Do you think "The Hunger Games" fits well with ABC Family's slate of programming?

  • 'Mirror Mirror' Star Lily Collins Says Snow White Is No Damsel In Distress

If you've been wondering just what the psychological dealio is with the leading ladies of "Mirror Mirror," then here's a video you'll need to see: Julia Roberts and Lily Collins, who play, respectively, the Evil Queen and the Pretty Princess in the latest cinematic derivative of "Snow White," sat down with MTV News to discuss the intricate inner lives of their characters. And with surprising results!

First off, says Julia, the Evil Queen is hardly a villain. In fact, she's not even Evil! At all!

"I think she's deeply misunderstood," the actress insisted. "And I think she is correct in her ambition and drive and desire and focus to annihilate Snow White. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that."

...Oh, wait, no: it's not that the Queen isn't evil. It's that Julia Roberts is a beautiful psychopath. (Not that we don't still love her!)

But Julia isn't the only one who feels that the ladies of "Mirror Mirror" aren't entirely what they seem on the surface; Lily chimed in with similar thoughts on her character's complexity as compared with the fairytale version.

"I love that Snow White is not just this damsel in distress, waiting to be saved," she explained. "She really becomes a fighter, emotionally and physically."

Which, she said, made the process of playing the role a whole lot more fun: "I got to swordfight and fence and wrestle and do all these things you don't normally associate with a princess."

Psh. Clearly Lily has never watched the PBS special about the centuries-old tradition of Royal Cagefighting at Buckingham Palace, in which the Queen referees a no-holds-barred throwdown between various titled ladies until only one princess is left standing! But we're psyched to see her flex her muscles in this fairytale flick all the same.

Do you think the ladies of "Mirror Mirror" are just misunderstood?

  • 'Smash' Recap: 'The Coup'

    Smashby Erin Strecker

Last night was all about temptation: Good girl Karen was tempted to go bad with Derek, Dev was tempted by the seedy underbelly of politics, and Ellis was tempted by his longing to be a producer and his diminishing affection for Tom. Everyone was on edge after the lackluster workshop last week. No one knew what the next step was going to be, and Ivy especially was concerned her head was on the chopping block.

Ivy may not know her fate, but Julia broke the news to Michael early on that he would no longer be part of the Marilyn team (Subtext: Also no longer part of her life.) He took the news well, saying that if he wasn't fired he would have quit. Perhaps they'll be able to put their affair behind them with no one else the wiser? Doubtful, but it's working for the moment. Other family drama included Eileen's daughter, Katie, showing up, concerned about how her mother was handling her father's increasingly spiteful money issues regarding their impending divorce.

To get her mind off the news she wasn't hearing, some of the ensemble members took Ivy bowling. This will be known as the moment "Smash" went full "SmashGlee." Prior to this, all songs took place in a very real world, whether it was at practice or a Bar Mitzvah. Not so anymore—they danced down the bowling lanes and belted out a very fantasy-based tune. Talk about a huge mistake.

In the meantime, Derek wanted to meet up with Karen to go over recording a new number for the show. The only catch: She couldn't tell Tom or Julia. Karen wondered if this was the right thing to do, before ultimately agreeing. Derek explained that he and Eileen would tell the others eventually, but it was best not to worry them prematurely. They set to work on the new number "Touch Me," complete with a backing band that included Ryan Tedder (playing himself) from OneRepublic.

It seemed everyone was hearing news from a third party last night, whether it was when Dev found out he wouldn't be getting the new job—or Ellis telling—or rather showing, Ivy about the new show. Point of discussion: Is Ellis the most manipulative character on TV? I think so. He wormed his way into Eileen's personal life, listened in on her family drama and also planted creepy seeds of doubt in Ivy's mind about her status with the show.

Eventually Tom and Julia (as well as a hidden-away Ivy and Ellis) saw the new number. The overtly sexy tune "Touch Me" featured an extended dance on a fenced-in bed and really missed its opportunity as a Britney-Spears-circa-2001 single. The gyrating, the pulsating tempo, it was all there. And it was all a long way from anything we've seen Tom and Julia do thus far with "Marilyn." Needless to say, they were more than a little bit blind-sided.

Katie, who apparently was just full of pure goodness, told her mom that surprising Tom and Julia with a whole new direction was really unfair, and not the kind of person Eileen is. Eileen agreed, so she went back into the warehouse/studio where the surprise performance took place and apologized. Julia and Eileen then both left, leaving a sad-faced Karen to run into Ivy outside. Cold words were exchanged. Both were hurt.

Inside, the bubbling, just barely under-the-surface tension between Tom and Derek exploded in one very heated argument. They both threw down some good lines, with Tom saying that the only reason the show they did together got such good reviews for Derek was because Derek's dad was sleeping with the critic. Burn! Derek then snapped and started hating on the gay men running the theater world "but still always playing the victim." Ouch. Those two are going to be signing up for a BFF dance class anytime soon. But they will still have to be around each other—both confirm they aren't quitting the show.

The episode didn't just end badly for them: Tom, now short one assistant because (surprise!) Ellis is now Eileen's assistant, had to tell Ivy that it was decided "Marilyn" needed a star—and that wasn't her. A clearly devastated Ivy was alone sadly singing in her room when Derek stopped by to tell her how great she really was. That was exactly what Ivy needed to hear, so, to the surprise of no one, those two ended things last night back together in bed. Her professional life may be in shambles, but her personal life is right on track... Well, actually probably not, but we'll have to wait and see how Derek and Ivy Round Two plays out the rest of the season.

Crushers: How are you liking Ellis as a villain? Do you think Karen will get her turn as Marilyn, even though the show is now looking for a star? Will Ivy be happy just being a chorus girl? How long is Julia's family going to remain blissfully ignorant? Sound off in the comments and on Twitter!

  • 'Before I Fall' Movie Has Its Director

Ever since word came down of the movie rights being optioned for Lauren Oliver's "Before I Fall," fans have been waiting impatiently for the adaptation that'll let us watch the supernatural time-glitchy unraveling of high school meanie Samantha Kingston on the big screen (not to mention for a "day on repeat" movie that doesn't revolve around a sun-phobic subterranean rodent).

And now, The Hollywood Reporter has word that a helmer is nearly on board: director Gina Prince-Blythewood is circling the script of this hotly anticipated take on one of our favorite YA books.

This is the first big news on a "Before I Fall" movie in more than a year, but don't be looking for casting announcements or behind-the-scenes gossip just yet: Gina, who also helmed "The Secret Life of Bees," is still in negotiations to direct the adaptation, and word has it that she's eyeing a rewrite of the script before things can move forward. But it's still great news for a deal that seemed like it might've been lost somewhere in the Hollywood machine—and a good reason for us to reopen the debate on which up-and-coming actress can handle the difficult role of the thoroughly hateable (but ultimately redeemed) Samantha. Could one of our crop of New Class favorites be poised to take the lead?

  • 'Hunger Games' Hangover: 7 Other Dystopian Adaptations In The Works

Audiences sated their appetite for all things bleak this weekend, feasting on the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" to the tune of $155 million at the box office. And though Katniss and Peeta are leading the dystopian charge, they won't be alone in the Arena forever. Even before the film caught fire with movie-goers, prescient producers had been green-lighting movie and television adaptations based on dark-future books. To wit, here's a list of seven other YA dystopian tales in various stages of production.

    Book: "Legend," by Marie Lu
Premise: A teenage twist on "Les Miserables," this Los Angeles-set tale follows military-officer-in-training June as she tracks notorious criminal Day, who's been charged with her brother's murder.
Status: "Twilight" producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey optioned the novel in February 2011—long before it even hit bookstore shelves. Wyck has gone on record saying "Legend" will "[blow] the socks off of 'The Hunger Games.'" Um, Wyck, those are some big socks to fill.

    Book: "The Selection," Kiera Cass
Premise: Kiera's post-apocalyptic world doesn't sound too different from our own. After all, "The Selection" revolves around a "Bachelor"-style competition for Prince Maxon's affections (and the second seat ruling his war-torn country).
Status: Though "Selection" isn't due until April, The CW is already at work on a television pilot starring "Friday Night Lights" alumna Aimee Teegarden, Ethan Peck and William Moseley.

    Book: "Divergent," Veronica Roth
Premise: Society (i.e. dystopian Chicago) is separated into five factions—Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity and Candor—one of which each teen must join at the age of 16. When Abnegation-raised Tris selects Dauntless as her faction, she's propelled into a life she never could have imagined.
Status: Summit Entertainment scooped up the film rights a year ago, with "Snow White and the Huntsman" scribe Evan Daugherty signed on to write the screenplay. Casting has yet to begin, but we've got a few actresses in mind for our gutsy heroine.

    Book: "Matched," Ally Condie
Premise: Free will is a thing of the past in 17-year-old Cassia's world, where rites of passage (i.e. whom you marry, when you'll die) are dictated by the government. Though Cassia's been matched with neighbor Xander, it's mysterious Ky she's really drawn to.
Status: Disney optioned the rights way back in September 2010. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" scribes Michele and Kieran Mulroney are penning the script, while "Rock of Ages" helmer Adam Shankman recently tweeted that his company is producing.

    Book: "Eve," Anna Carey
Premise: After a virus wipes out much of the Earth's population, teen Eve is among the survivors sequestered to an all-girls school, where she's been taught to fear boys. But when she discovers her true post-graduate fate, she runs away and into rebellious Caleb, who slowly proves he's a trustworthy friend in an otherwise perilous world.
Status: "Vampire Diaries" producers are working on a television pilot.

    Book: "Delirium," Lauren Oliver
Premise: Much like "Matched," "Delirium"'s alternate reality puts strict restrictions on love. In fact, the government so fears the emotion that it's been deemed a disease (amor deliria nervosa). When teens reach their 18th year, they're forced to undergo a lobotomy-like procedure to cure themselves of the affliction. But Lena Haloway isn't going quietly.
Status: Fox 2000 landed the rights in February 2011. Despite sequel "Pandemonium" hitting stores last month, few updates have surfaced regarding the film project. Lauren does say on her blog, however, that the script is "great."

Book: "The Knife of Never Letting Go," Patrick Ness
Premise: Todd Hewitt lives on a distant planet known as New World, where a germ has infected humans, amplifying their thoughts for all to hear. Chaos, predictably, ensues.
Status: Lionsgate could have a second book-based blockbuster on its hands with Patrick's "Chaos Walking" series (though we can only guess the studio's been too consumed with "The Hunger Games" to really get this project off the ground).

Which of these dystopian reads are you excited to see on the big screen? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!

  • 'True Blood' Teases Season 5 With 3 New Clips

With "True Blood" returning to HBO in just a few short months, fans are seriously excited to kick back and catch up with their Bon Temps favorites again... And if the new teasers released today are any indication, so is the show itself.

The three new clips released are fondly reminiscent of all that's happened, as they take us on a first-person tour through signature "True Blood" settings that echo with the memories of things past. (Literally, in this case, as snippets of dialogue from previous seasons play the entire time the camera pans over the lifeless interior of Fangtasia and strolls through the empty rooms of Bill's and Sookie's houses.)

The only letdown: There's still no actual new footage of the upcoming season, leaving fans to talk amongst themselves about what might be in store for the cast this time around. But ooooooh, do we sense a theme emerging? The previous teaser for the show warned us that "nothing stays buried forever," and these trailers end with a final ominous reminder as well: YOU CAN'T ESCAPE YOUR PAST. So here's hoping a few sordid secrets come back from the dead to bite the surviving residents of Bon Temps right in the Louisiana hindquarters...and here's hoping one of them is Russell Edgington, because he was the best.

Watch all three teases on "True Blood"'s YouTube channel.
