  • Kenneth Branagh May Direct Next Jack Ryan Pic

    Kenneth Branagh Chris Pine

Things did not look good for Jack Ryan, Tom Clancy's perennial hero, last week when "Lost" producer Jack Bender dropped out as director of his next adventure due to scheduling conflicts, but a director from the Marvel universe may be stepping in.

Variety is reporting that Kenneth Branagh is not circling the next Jack Ryan project as Bender's replacement.

Interest in the project has been high since "Star Trek"'s Chris Pine signed on to reprise the role previously played Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. This would be the first Jack Ryan movie since 2002's "The Sum of All Fears."

  • Hugh Jackman Tweets First 'Les Miserables' Photo

    by Fallon Prinzivalli

Since the announcement of the A-list cast for "Les Miserables," fans of the actors involved have been hitting the web daily hoping for a glimpse of the characters. Hence the paparazzi photos posted online last week of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe on set.

On the heels of that leak, Jackman posted the first official image from the film on his Twitter. He wrote, "Very excited about how the first days of filming are going!! Check out my convict look...but its changing soon."

Jackman's talking about how his character – the movie's protagonist Jean Valjean – repents from his ways as a thief to become an honorable factory owner. The photo shows Valjean in his former stage of stealing silverware and fighting the law, which includes police officer Javert (Crowe).

The cast also features Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Eddie Redmayne. Big thanks to Collider for the heads up!

  • 'Hunger Games' Withdrawal: Five Post-Movie Cures

    Hunger Games

Judging by the insane box office success that "The Hunger Games" had this weekend, we're guessing that a lot of you probably went to see the movie. And there's a decent chance that a good portion of you hadn't read the novels before you watched the film, and are new to this whole craze.

It seems like we've spent years waiting for "The Hunger Games" to hit theaters and, now that it finally has, we've got to wait 20 more months until "Catching Fire" follows suit. So to help ease the passing of time for fans new and old, we have compiled a list of five ways to keep yourself entertained in the interim period.

    Read (or re-read) the books
If you liked "The Hunger Games" film, you're definitely going to love Suzanne Collins' novels. Unlike the movie, the books are told from Katniss's first-person perspective, so you get a whole new experience reading the story that's different than the one you saw on the big screen. Even if you have read the books before, they're definitely worth reading again -- you probably missed something the first or fifth time around! And those who haven't, well, don't you want to know how Katniss's tale is going to end?

Watch "Battle Royale" and "The Running Man"
There have been a lot -- and I mean a lot -- of comparisons between "The Hunger Games" and its predecessors, "Battle Royale" and "The Running Man." The association is definitely fair: "Battle Royale" follows a group of teenagers forced by a fascist government to fight to the death against one another, while "The Running Man" follows a wrongly-accused man forced to fight for his life on national television. If you're interested in some bloodthirsty action similar to what goes on in "The Hunger Games," these two films are a good place to start.

    Read "1984"
In the end, much of the dystopian literature that has re-popularized in recent years can be traced back to "1984." Many elements of "The Hunger Games" can be found in George Orwell's chilling tale of a dystopian future ruled by an oligarchical dictatorship, and it will be interesting for fans to compare the journeys of the two stories. And at least you can rest easy in the fact that "The Hunger Games" series has a much happier and uplifting ending than "1984" does.

Acquaint yourself with the leading actors' other work
Before they were the main trio at the heart of "The Hunger Games," Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth were already established actors. Lawrence won an Oscar nomination for her role in "Winter's Bone," and she also charmed us in last year's "X-Men: First Class" and "Like Crazy." Hutcherson has typically starred in family-friendly fare like "Zathura" and "Bridge to Terabithia," but he showed a great dramatic turn in 2010's "The Kids Are All Right." Liam Hemsworth hasn't gotten as much exposure, but fans can watch him fall in love with his real-life girlfriend Miley Cyrus in 2010's "The Last Song."

Join the online conversation and speculation
"The Hunger Games" hasn't been out for a week, and already people are starting to guess who they'd like to see play what character in "Catching Fire" and whether they think "The Hunger Games" film series will be split into three or four films. So join in the conversation! "The Hunger Games" has one of the best fan communities around nowadays, and there's nothing like feeling like you and a thousand of your friends are all getting hyped for the same pop culture event. Our friends at Hollywood Crush are leading the "Hunger Games" conversation for MTV Movies, and you can also check out fan sites Down with the Capitol or Mockingjay.net for further commentary to pass the time until "Catching Fire" comes out.

What are you going to do to ease the wait until "Catching Fire" hits theaters on November 22, 2013? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

  • 'Raid' Director Gareth Evans Teases Sequel Plans

So, while the world was busy devouring "The Hunger Games" this weekend, I imagine that at least a few of you feasted your eyes on "The Raid: Redemption." Director Gareth Evans' latest is truly one of the greatest action movies to come along in years. We said as much in our "Raid" review, which you should all go read immediately.

Add to the list of reasons to see "The Raid" as soon as possible: Evans is already working on the sequel. The film, which has an Indonesian title "Berandal," promises to open up the world of "The Raid" in a bigger way than the currently available (and thoroughly awesome) first movie. MTV News spoke with Evans all about his plans—click the video to see what he had to say, and head past the break for even more of his thoughts on the next "Raid."

    Changing The Game
"The sequel is going to be a big departure in a way, in that we won't just copy the same formula as the first film," Evans said of how he'll change the setting for the sequel. "It's not going to be set within one building this time. Everything that was terrifying about the boss in that building in the first movie is small fry compared to the criminal organization we meet in the second film. We take it out into the streets, go much wider and much bigger in terms of the scope."

    A Bigger, Slower World
Part of that expanded scope is rooted in what we've already seen; Evans said that characters only hinted at in "Redemption" would become fully fleshed out in "Berandal." Additionally, moving "Raid" out of the apartment complex and onto the streets will allow for a slower pace than the first film: "We know we can't make the second one the same kind of crazy pace as the first one. A large part of the reason why the first one is so fast paced is because of the structure of it: it's all contained within eight to ten hours of a day. In that respect, it would feel overwhelming if there were too many plot developments and character arcs. But in the second one, it's a larger period of time."

    Return Of The Dog
Expect a lot of dangerous new villains in the second "Raid" movie, including one played by the man behind Mad Dog himself, Yayan Ruhian. Yes, even though he—SPOILER, by the way—died in the first film, Yayan, who helped choreograph the film's awesome fight scenes, will be back for the sequel—but not as Mad Dog. "He'll have no relation to Mad Dog. It's a different, stand alone character," said Evans. "We're going to hide him under makeup, wigs, and costumes. I just loved watching Yayan fight. He's an incredible fighter. He's such a huge part of our choreography team. Whatever I'm doing, I want to work with him."

    Rama Stays Put
One thing that won't change between the two "Raid" movies is the presence of Rama, the elite squad badass played by Iko Uwais. He'll be back in full force, Evans promised, carrying much of the story of "Berandal" forward. "It's a continuation of Rama's story," the director teased. "We'll give more emotional depth to everything that happens to Rama and his family as well… because he has a kid now!"

    One Last Raid
"Berandal" won't be the last "Raid" movie, either, though it might be the last movie for a little while. "I know where I want to take part three. I don't have the full storyline yet. But the ending of part two sets up the story for part three," said Evans. "I have a feeling that after I finish part two -- which has been an itch I've been trying to scratch for three years -- I want to do a couple of other films before returning to this franchise. So it'll be 'The Raid,' 'The Raid 2,' then film, film, and maybe 'Raid 3.'"

  • Chloe Moretz Offered Lead Role In 'Carrie' Remake

    Chloe Moretz

It looks like Chloe Moretz may be wearing red to prom, buckets and buckets of red. Deadline is reporting that MGM has formally offered the role of telekinetic teen, Carrie White, to the "Hugo" star.

Earlier this week, reports claimed that after looking at several young actresses, the competition for the role in the Stephen King remake had been narrowed down to Moretz and Haley Bennett. Deadline claims that if the Moretz deal goes through, producers will quickly begin the hunt for a psychotic mother to foster the young, bullied psychic.

Moretz has been known for darker roles throughout her short career. She quickly earned fame after playing a foul-mouthed assassin in "Kick Ass" and a deadly tween vampire in "Let Me In." She'll be seen next in Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows."

  • War Of The Five Kings: Robb Stark

The War of the Five Kings is set to explode during the "Game of Thrones" season premiere, and we'll be here all week to familiarize you with the key players in the fight. We kicked off yesterday with cruel boy king Joffrey Baratheon, one of the vilest, most loathsome characters in the entirety of "Thrones." Today, we'll examine someone considerably more likable...

    Robb Stark

    Know Your King
King in the North and Lord of Winterfell, Robb Stark represents everything that Joffrey does not: honor, loyalty and mercy -- to those who deserve it at least. With his father dead, Robb has been forced to grow up well beyond his years to wage war against the Lannisters... but even he has his boyish weaknesses.

    Where Is He From?
In peacetime, Robb's rightful place would be up north in Winterfell. But it is not peacetime. Accordingly, he has set up camp in the riverlands of Westeros, fighting battle after calculated battle against Tywin Lannister's men.

    The King's Court
Robb keeps himself surrounded by good company, with the Greatjon Umber being one of his closest military advisors and supporters. Childhood friend and veritable brother Theon Greyjoy is at his side as well -- for now, anyway -- as is his mother, the grieving widow Catelyn Stark. Also present is Greywind the direwolf, who has grown up considerably since Robb first found him as a pup.

    What Does He Do?
In short: he wins. Though three victories do not make him a conquerer, three wins are better than three defeats. To that end, Robb is chipping away at the Lannisters with considerable efficiency.

    Do We Like Him?
We do. Of all the kings currently in the mix, Robb is the most likable by miles. It doesn't hurt that he's a Stark, representing everything we loved about poor dead Ned.

  • Happy Birthday, Nathan Fillion: Our Five Favorite Flicks

Today at MTV News we celebrate the birthday of actor Nathan Fillion. By "we" I mostly mean "I," because I'm the only one around here with a mini-shrine to Nathan at my desk. But I invite you join me in the celebration, dear reader!

To get the party started, I present to you my Five Favorite Fillion Films, in list form. "Wait," I hear you say, "Doesn't Nathan Fillion do TV?" 'Tis true, my astute fellow Fillionaire – he's known primarily for his television roles on such shows as "Castle," "Firefly" and "The Sitcom with Ryan Reynolds and Another Guy and a Girl and a Pizza Place." But Nathan has done some fine work in film as well (and he will do more, as he's just been cast as Hermes - a GOD! - in the "Percy Jackson" sequel). My faves are after the jump!

    1. "Serenity"
Of course this is number one on my list, because it's the "Firefly" movie, and "Firefly" trumps anything else. Captain Mal Reynolds, I'd follow you into battle anytime.

    2. "Waitress"
This adorable little movie stars Keri Russell as the waitress and Nathan as the deeply devoted baby doctor. There's a husband involved, and some other waitresses as well, but all the great moments - and there are many - are between Russell and Fillion.

    3. "Slither"
James Gunn wrote and directed this hysterically funny horror flick, starring our own birthday boy as a small-town cop fighting off big-time aliens and zombies. Get it on DVD and watch the extras to truly appreciate the comic genius that is Nathan Fillion. Bonus: Elizabeth Banks is in it!

    4. "Super"
This is another James Gunn film, starring Rainn Wilson as a wanna-be superhero. Nathan makes a fabulous cameo appearance as The Holy Avenger. His costume alone is worth the price of a Netflix subscription.

    5. "Saving Private Ryan"
"Wait," I hear you say, "Nathan Fillion is in 'Saving Private Ryan??'" Yes, I respond, he is. He plays the other Private Ryan, the one who is told that his brothers are all dead only to be told a minute later that there's been a mistake and his brothers are, in fact, probably not dead. In his few brief moments on screen, Nathan was able to display his considerable dramatic acting chops. It may be a stretch to say he saved "Saving Private Ryan," but go back and watch that scene – his superstardom was already beginning to show.

    Carell

The movie centers on neighbors Dodge (Steve Carrell) and Penny (Keira Knightley), who head out on a road trip and learn that sometimes the most important people can enter your life at extremely unexpected times – like when you're searching for your old high school sweetheart as an asteroid nears Earth threatening to wipe out all life.

But Carrell and Knightley aren't the only ones faced with impending apocalyptic doom; this star-studded cast also includes Adam Brody, Rob Corddry and Patton Oswalt. In the photo above, Oswalt's character attempts to sway Carell's soon-to-die Dodge over to his wilder way of thinking.
