• Justin Bieber Joins Carly Rae Jepsen On 'Ellen'

Biebs introduces his artist's performance and offers a preview of his single 'Boyfriend.'
    By Natasha Chandel

Justin Bieber is standing behind his girl. Carly Rae Jepsen made her first major U.S. talk-show appearance on Friday's (March 23) "Ellen DeGeneres Show," and she brought quite the surprise with her: Bieber himself and an exclusive preview of his song "Boyfriend."

Ellen began the segment attempting to read an intro for Jepsen, the 26-year-old Canadian singer who won the hearts of pop enthusiasts with her catchy, upbeat single "Call Me Maybe" but was interrupted by an eruption of screaming girls who caught sight of a black-and-yellow-clad Justin Bieber. The young heartthrob took the opportunity to introduce Jepsen, whom he recently signed to his Schoolboy Records label. He had been making a public Twitter bid to Ellen to have his new artist appear on her daytime show.

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Jepsen, who calls her style "folky pop," took to the stage in a long, bohemian dress. Jepsen sang her hit song, currently at #8 on the iTunes singles chart alongside the Wanted and Katy Perry. Her performance was applauded by Ellen and topped off with a giant hug from her new mentor.

During an interview with Ellen, Bieber recalled hearing Jepsen's track on the radio in Canada and jumping on YouTube to find out more about the "talented" singer. After learning of her local success, Bieber realized she was unsigned in the U.S. and immediately decided to change that.

Life has certainly taken a 180-degree turn for Jepsen in the last two months. "I had never branched outside of Canada, and I didn't know how to do that, and then one miraculous day, Justin called," Jepsen told Ellen. "It seemed too good to be true." There is also talk of a possible collaboration with Bieber.

Bieber is taking his new A&R role very seriously, promoting Jepsen in any way possible, including dropping a video spoof of "Call Me Maybe" featuring famous friends Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and Carlos Pena Jr. of Big Time Rush.

Did you like Carly Rae Jepsen's performance on "Ellen"? • Justin Bieber Ripe For Spoofing, 'Stevie TV' Star Says

'Guys are like, 'I don't know what it is, but you're really hot,' comedian Stevie Ryan says of playing the teen superstar on VH1 show.
    By Christina Garibaldi

Stevie Ryan may make fun of Justin Bieber on her new VH1 show "Stevie TV," but the actress and the pop star actually have something cool in common: They were both discovered on YouTube.

Ryan began her career impersonating celebrities and creating her own characters on her YouTube channel and instantly became an Internet star. Now the 26-year-old comedian gets to do her routines on VH1, portraying some of today's biggest celebs and reality TV stars.

"It's just a female's perspective on pop culture, really, at least that's the way I think about it," Ryan told MTV News on Tuesday. "It's really just kind of making fun of pop culture, what's happening in it, just making fun of these celebrities that are rewarded for bad behavior."

So far on "Stevie TV," Ryan has created a music video that mocks Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)," gotten into character as Lady Gaga and done some cross-dressing to get into one of her favorite roles, Justin Bieber.

Ryan explained that Bieber has been the most fun to play "because I always tell everybody how guys and girls always like me when I'm Justin Bieber. ... Girls are like, 'You're so cute, like, are you really a girl?' And then guys are like, 'I don't know what it is, but you're really hot.' But I really like playing everybody," she laughed.

And though she may poke fun at celebrities, Ryan said she's really a fan of most of the stars ... except maybe one.

"I just thought, 'What a great way to kind of show that this is what the younger generation is growing up with, that who little girls like, is Kim Kardashian,' " Ryan said. "It's just observing these weird behaviors and finding a place for them that makes sense because you can always make fun of Kim Kardashian — she has a big butt, she made a sex tape — but at the same time you have to step back and look at the big picture; people are actually wanting to be like this."

As for future episodes, Ryan really wants to impersonate a certain Young Money rapper. "I would like to do Nicki Minaj," Ryan revealed. "There's nothing that I want to make fun of about her, because I'm obsessed with her and I really, really love her."

Asked if she's gotten any backlash yet for the sometimes harsh jokes on her show, Ryan said she hasn't, but she's ready if it comes her way.

"It hasn't happened before and I'd give a flying f--- about what any of them have to say," Ryan said. "Because I'm just doing my job just like they are and so whatever, if anyone has anything to say, bring it!"

"Stevie TV" airs Sundays at 11 p.m. ET on VH1.

What do you think of "Stevie TV"? • Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' Teaser Goes Hard

The 13-second preview of Mike Posner-produced track shows off an edgier side of Bieber.
    By Jocelyn Vena

Is it killing you that you have to wait until Monday to hear what "Boyfriend" sounds like? Well, Justin Bieber feels your pain and decided to release a teaser for the lead single off his album, Believe.

The 13-second, blink-and-you-might-miss-it tease is spare in terms of instruments, just bleeps and thumps, no singing or rapping. But it does play up Bieber's love for hip-hop; as it nears the end of the tease, a drum line-style beat kicks in. Come Monday, of course, the whole song will drop for Beliebers' listening pleasure.

The video teaser also includes footage of Bieber in the studio, recording "Boyfriend," which was co-written and co-produced by Mike Posner. The clip premiered on Justin's website late Thursday night.

"This record is different in a very good way," said producer/writer Mason Levy, who also worked on the song. "Definitely edgier, it's more grown-up, it's more developed and it's sexier. It's just like really dope. It's gonna definitely surprise people. People aren't really expecting that. They're going to like it."

It's clear from the teaser that Bieber is using influences from urban music and that he's looking to grow up sonically. The music in the new clip also seems to pay homage to Justin Timberlake, and even Chris Brown. Bieber has confirmed that he raps on the song.

"It's more just the verses [that he's rapping on], and the rest he's singing," Levy told MTV News. "It's dope. It's hip-hop, but with great acoustic R&B, pop guitar with very hip-hop, clubby drums and really dope Justin Timberlake-y melodies."

What do you think of "Boyfriend" so far? Tell us in the comments!

  • Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' Single Is 'Definitely Edgier'

Producer/songwriter tells MTV News the 'sexier' track, which drops Monday, will 'definitely surprise people.'
    By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber is days away from dropping his lead Believe single, "Boyfriend," and its early buzz grew even louder on Wednesday when Bieber released the lyrics for the track. While fans will have to wait until Monday to hear the song, MTV News got a little bit of a tease from one of the guys who worked with the teen sensation on the track.

"This record is different in a very good way," "BF" co-producer and co-writer Mason Levy told MTV News. "Definitely edgier, it's more grown-up, it's more developed and it's sexier. It's just like really dope. It's gonna definitely surprise people. People aren't really expecting that they're going to like it."

Levy thinks pretty much everyone is destined to like it, thanks to a sound that reaches far beyond that of Bieber's tweeny pop days. "It's more of something that everyone can drive around and listen to it, whether they're guys or girls or older," he said.

Bieber has said he wanted to grow up with this album and the Mike Posner-produced song. His model was the post-'NSYNC Justin Timberlake. From the sound of it, he might have hit that nail on the head.

"It's more just the verses [that he raps on] and the rest he's singing," he said. "It's dope. It's hip-hop, but with great acoustic R&B, pop guitar with very hip-hop, clubby drums and really dope Justin Timberlake-y melodies."

The creation of the song was pretty organic, Levy said. "We got together and started messing around. It was one of those things where you didn't have to struggle too much. It just kind of happened," he said. "He always goes in and does melodies and he's involved in lyrics and everything."

"Boyfriend" will set the tone for the album, set for release later this year. "There's definitely lots of diversity on the album. There's really ballad-y stuff and there's more stuff like this. I would say ['Boyfriend'] is harder," Levy added. "He's very open to everything."

Are you excited to hear a "grown-up" Bieber on "Boyfriend"? Leave your comment below!

He also discusses his upcoming album, Believe, pledging that it's "go big or go home" once it drops later this year.

"I feel like it's my responsibility to be the greatest I can be," the magazine cover boy says. "If I start making terrible music, I don't expect people to like me. If I'm making great music and there's no reason for people to dislike me, that's when it's going to make me upset. People just need to take a chance and listen. If they don't want to take a chance, then I don't know. That's going to be the biggest problem: to make them feel like it's cool for them to like my music."

Bieber hopes the new album will show his growth. It will include a number of collaborators, including Mike Posner, who produced lead single "Boyfriend," set for release on March 26.

"I just rap for fun; it's nothing to take seriously," he admits. "On my new album, I'm going to do a little bit of rapping," he adds before giving a preview of a few lines from "Boyfriend." "Tell me what you like, dear/ Tell me what you don't/ I could be your Buzz Lightyear/ Fly across the globe/ You don't even need to fight, dear/ You already know/ I can make you shine bright/ Like you're laying in the snow, burr," he raps.

The superstar also goes into detail about his work ethic, saying that he sets the bar high for himself. "When I release something, I want it to be the best," he says. "When I release my fragrance, I want it to be the #1 fragrance — I don't want it to be the ninth-best-selling fragrance. My Christmas album went double-platinum worldwide. Christmas albums don't do that, and that still wasn't good enough for me."

What do you think of Justin's new magazine cover? • Justin Bieber Challenges Fans To Choose 'Boyfriend' Cover Art

Bieber will let his fans pick which photo he uses for the song, out March 26.
    By Jocelyn Vena

Ever dreamed of being Justin Bieber's art director? Well, the singer is giving his fans that opportunity. Bieber has released two photos and requested that fans choose which will be the official art for his next single, "Boyfriend." The photo that receives the most fan tweets wins.

Biebs dons a gray checkered top over a gray T-shirt in both photos, but it's the pose that really differentiates the two shots. In one, he stands looking away from the camera, his hands at his side. In the other, he's looking to the camera, his hand running through his famous hair.

The Mike Posner-produced track will drop on March 26. It's the first single off his forthcoming album, Believe, out later this year. Bieber hit the studio with a number of A-listers for the album, including Maroon 5's Adam Levine and super-producers Diplo and Ryan Tedder, plus will.i.am, Drake and Lil Wayne.

"You can't really expect anything from my album. It's really, really different," Bieber told MTV News. "And it's new; it's not the same thing everyone's used to hearing right now on the radio. It's really exciting for me, 'cause I'm able to break out of my shell and show my fans what I'm all about and show other people who might not like my music that maybe they can like my music.

"I'm not trying to lose any of my young fans," he continued. "I'm not trying to lose any of my fans, I'm just trying to gain fans, and I think that's the best way to do it. Rather than try to grow up and lose your fans, you can get better and evolve and gain respect from more people."

Which Bieber photo do you think he should use as the cover art for "Boyfriend"? • Justin Bieber Protege Carly Rae Jepsen Piques Our Curiosity

MTV News gets to know the 26-year-old 'Call Me Maybe' singer, who has suddenly found herself in the big leagues.
    By Natasha Chandel

Carly Rae Jepsen has suddenly found herself in the big leagues. Justin Bieber recently signed the YouTube pop starlet to his Schoolboy Records label, much like his mentor, Usher, helped catapult him into superstardom when the R&B icon took Bieber under his wing.

It all started when Bieber tweeted, "Call me maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen is possibly the catchiest song I've ever heard," creating an immediate runaway hit of the track off Jepsen's EP Curiosity. And now, a music video spoof of the song, featuring heavy pop hitters like Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and, of course, Bieber, has likely made "Call Me Maybe" the song of the season.

"I have no idea why Justin Bieber picked me out of everyone he could have picked, but I'm so glad he did," Jepsen told MTV News recently.

So, who is the girl who wants you to call her, maybe? We already know the 26-year-old Canadian singer has fans in high places, and her track is in the top 10 on the iTunes singles chart, alongside the likes of Adele and Katy Perry. But there is much about this up-and-coming pop singer that you might not know, and MTV News would like to acquaint you with some lesser-known facts about Carly Rae Jepsen.

1. She is an "Idol" alum.

In 2007, Jepsen placed third in the Canadian version of the popular "Idol" competition, touring across the country for the "Canadian Idol" Top 3 Concert Tour. During her first audition, Jepsen impressed the judges so much, singing original material, that one judge proclaimed his wish for her not to move forward in the show so he could sign her to a record deal right there and then.

2. She might collaborate with Justin Bieber.

The Bieb is certainly "paying it forward." This past Christmas, Usher recorded a song with his protégé on "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," and now Bieber has reportedly collaborated on a track with his protégé, Jepsen. "I think a collaboration with Justin Bieber isn't out of the question considering we've already gotten together and worked on a little something," Jepsen told MTV News. "But for when that will come out, your guess is as good as mine, but hopefully soon. I like the song."

3. She takes inspiration from life and her friends.

Most art imitates life, and it is no different for Jepsen. But she also takes inspiration from the lives of those around her. "I have a fascination with words, so if a girlfriend starts talking and says a phrase that resonates with me, I'll put it down on a napkin and get inspired from that," Jepsen says of her creative process.

4. She loves shoes.

Jepsen loves her stilettos. "I have an obsession with high heels mostly because I'm 5' 2" and a girl needs all the help she can get!" she quipped. She will likely have a ball this spring/summer fashion season as the height of heels grows, hopefully in conjunction with her rising stature.

Jepsen has been making the media rounds under the tutelage of Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, who recently told Rolling Stone, "He's [Justin Bieber] never jumped out and promoted an artist like this."

Jepsen is scheduled to make an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on March 22, and it seems the sky's the limit for this folksy addition to the pop world, especially with Justin Bieber on her side.

What do you want to know about Carly Rae Jepsen? Tell us in the comments!
