- 'Starters' Is A Dystopian Read You'll Want To Snatch Up For Yourself
Contemporary literature is littered with tales of not-so-benevolent bodysnatchers—unwelcomed interlopers who make no apology for encroaching on unsuspecting hosts. But what if you gave up control of your person willingly...for cash? Such is the premise of Lissa Price's debut novel, "Starters" (out now), which is already garnering plenty of "The next 'Hunger Games'" buzz. (In fact, the dystopian tome's film rights went up for auction just this week).
The comparisons, though superficial, aren't entirely undeserved. Both near-future novels follow a young girl on a quest to save her sibling—a quest that uncovers greater societal schemes and wrong-doings.
In teen protagonist Callie's world, a deadly spore has killed off everyone between the ages of 20 and 60—leaving only the young (known as Starters) and the old (known as Enders). With no parents or grandparents to take care of her, Callie and younger brother Tyler must squat in abandoned buildings alongside their friend and protector, Michael.
But Callie soon learns of a secret way to earn cash. Beverly Hills' Prime Destinations offers an, um, unique service for Enders (many of which live until their late 100s): the old can rent out the bodies of the young. Thanks to a newfangled neurochip, senior citizens can take control of unconscious teen bodies to live out most of their deepest fantasies (there are clauses against sex and extreme sports). Callie's hesitant at first, but her sisterly instincts eventually lead her to accept Prime Destinations' offer in order to make a better life for Tyler. And it all goes pretty well until the last of her three contracted rentals, when her neurochip malfunctions and she wakes up, unsure of where she is and how much time has gone by. As she slowly starts to put the pieces together, the greater mystery of what Prime Destinations is and who is behind it begins to unravel, with terrifying consequences.
With its intriguing plot-twists and dash of romance, Lissa's novel is a bona fide pageturner that proves you can't take anything—or anyone—at face value. The best part? Readers need only wait until December for the second (and final) novel in the series, "Enders."

Переслать - Style Superstar: Ashley Greene Flaunts Legs And Leather
Spring has sprung, and fashion-conscious celebs are taking note! Gone are the dark, drab, heavy frocks of winter—jettisoned in favor of chic casual neutrals, exposed legs and vibrant pops of color. And this week, two lovely ladies broke out their best springtime style in the battle for Style Superstardom! Whose leather-centric look had us mooing (in a good way)? And who needs to peel back a layer or two to really celebrate the oncoming warmer weather? You know we've got the answers.
This week's Style Superstar? Ashley Greene, who looked seriously sophisticated when she made an appearance at the famous Macy's store in New York's Herald Square. Ashley sported a polished but casual combo by DKNY, showing off her lovely legs with a short leather A-line skirt and a pair of heels in the same shade of brown. And while leather bottoms can be tough to pull off (both figuratively and literally, now that we think about it), Ashley's choice of a tailored and feminine blouse in a searing orange-red was the perfect counterpart to her luscious leather skirt.
And at another flagship event, Jessica Stam also opted for a springy look with a slightly toned-down version of the same color palette—a taupe blazer over a breezy dress in shades of beige, coral and ivory. And she looks great! ...That is, except for the part where her silly, dinky little jacket is keeping the best bits of her dress hidden from view! Even though we really, really wanted to see it! Which isn't to say that her choice to wear an extra layer is wrong, exactly, but it is decidedly inconvenient, and for that, we must penalize her. (P.S. Just send us a pic of the dress in its uncovered glory and all will be forgiven.)

Переслать - 'Mirror Mirror' Reflects Evil Queen: 5 Fairytales We Want To See From The Villain's Perspective
by Fallon Prinzivalli
As the title suggests, "Mirror Mirror" is not all about Snow White. Snow shares center stage with the Evil Queen (Julia Roberts) in this comedic fairy tale adaptation—in theaters now. While Julia still plays the bad guy, the movie allows her character to step into the spotlight, and she isn't the only villainess having a moment. In 2013, Angelina Jolie will play a kinder rendition of Maleficent in the upcoming "Sleeping Beauty" adaptation.
"I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn't mean she can't have other [warmer] qualities," Angelina told EW.com.
This sparked our interest in which other villains might make for an interesting take on a classic fairy tale. Read on after the jump for our picks.
Queen of Hearts, "Alice in Wonderland"
"Off with her head!" is the Queen of Hearts' catchphrase in "Alice in Wonderland." She's mean-spirited and maintains control of those around her strictly by instilling fear. But what's the reason for this? How did the Queen become this way? Why is she obsessed with painting the roses red? Alice enters Wonderland well into the Queen's reign so her back story would make for an interesting retelling. Perhaps her father passed away causing her heart to harden or a lover left her forever with the parting gift of a single red rose? The possibilities are endless.Ursula, "The Little Mermaid"
Ursula is one hell of a woman (octopus?). With deep, powerful vocals and a killer attitude, she's a baddie just waiting to be praised. It's easy to see why she's jealous of Ariel. Ariel's a beautiful princess with singing pipes that gain far more admiration. Not to mention, with one glance, she gains the attention of the dreamy Prince Eric while Ursula is left alone with the her eels. Maybe Ursula just wants some quality company?Jafar, "Aladdin"
Compared to the way artists drew Aladdin, Jafar is especially creepy looking. A new take on the story would be much more interesting if a young Hollywood hottie was cast as the eager-to-be Sultan. An attractive actor combined with an interesting reason why he wants to be Sultan—the power to create positive change in the kingdom, for instance—would create more of a love triangle leaving audiences torn between Team Jafar and Team Aladdin.Rumpelstiltskin, "Rumpelstiltskin"
This might be a story and character you're not as familiar with. Here's a rundown: A miller tells a King that his daughter can spin straw into gold. The bald-faced lie causes the girl to be locked in a tower, forced to create gold by morning or face death. Rumpelstiltskin comes to her rescue and turns the straw into gold in exchange for her necklace. He does this for the next two nights, but when she runs out of things to hand over to him, she promises her first born child thinking she'll never marry. Well—plot twist!—the King marries her and they have a child. To her horror, Rumpelstiltskin returns to collect his reward unless she can guess his name in three days. Luckily she does and he never returns. The tale never mentions why Rumpelstiltskin wants the child. A more compelling story would answer that question with something like the tragic death of his child or the need for an apprentice. The Enchantress, "Rapunzel"
The Enchantress steals Rapunzel as a baby from a lonely couple (or the King and Queen if you go by the Disney version) and locks her in a tower. A more maternal Enchantress would give the villain more depth. Maybe she can't have children and she just wants a little girl to raise. Maybe she felt Rapunzel's parents were unfit and she could give her a better life. Either way, giving her a more powerful arc will enhance the character and subsequently, the story. What villainous fairytale take would you like to see on the big-screen? Переслать - 'The Hunger Games Adventures' Facebook Game: We Take A Trip To Panem
by Fallon Prinzivalli
When I was initially offered the opportunity to try the beta version of "The Hunger Games Adventures," I was hesitant for a few reasons. First, I ignore every friend request to play Facebook games, and I am notoriously awful at digital games in general (too many buttons to push at the same time). Second, I don't want to kill anyone! I refuse to relive Rue's death. But at the prospect of saving Rue, I became a little more intrigued. When I learned that the game doesn't actually involve killing children, I was sold.
Your "Hunger Games" adventure begins with creating your own character. You can change the face shape, the hair color and style him or her in a number of different outfits. Then, it's off to District 12! But don't worry, Katniss is there to show you around. You can trap game using snares, trade the meat with Peeta, distract Peacekeepers and go hunting with Gale, but beware of the Vulture Mutants. You can banish them with your bow and arrow—Katniss totally complimented my skills.
Luckily, for those of you—like me—who can't figure out what buttons to press when in computer games, all you need is the click or hover of your mouse. New quests continually pop up in the left-hand corner of your screen immediately after you complete one, which keeps the game moving along and provides you with direction. Whenever you feel like you're ready for a rest, you head back to your Forest Escape. You can make it your own home in the middle of the woods by planting flowers, building a shelter, and once your friends start playing the game, you can invite them to join you there.
Lionsgate and Funtactix collaborated on the game in partnership with Suzanne Collins herself, which means from character dialogue to iconic locations such as The Bakery and The Hob, the game stays true to the story we love.
"This is what this game is all about. It's using Facebook as a story-telling tool. You play as yourself. You create your own hero in this world," says Funtactix CEO Sam Glassenberg as he walked me through the demo.
The biggest thing the game has going for it, aside from the fact that it's fun and entertaining, is that these Gamemakers are on our side. They put the fans first, opening up the beta version to 100,000 "Hunger Games" enthusiasts while taking fan feedback into account along the way.
The game gives players a new, unique perspective into the world of Panem. You are a key player in the story. In a culture where escapism is the norm and everybody loves pretending to be someone new, the role-play game should fare well with the Facebook crowd. The only downside I currently see is if you're far more advanced at games than I am, the click of a mouse and step-by-step instructions might be too simple.
But with new items and content being added to the game every week, such as exclusive movie clips, we have no doubt the game will continue to get even better in the weeks to come. And once the game releases the first ever map of Panem (Sam says it's coming soon!), you'll be able to travel from district to district and even see the Capitol. Although, I'm a lot more excited at the prospect of meeting shirtless Finnick.
"The Hunger Games Adventures" opened to all users today, so be sure to get your Games on!

Переслать - Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner And Josh Hutcherson Are Kids' Choice Awards-Bound
This weekend, the stars will be out, the votes will be in, and the slime will flow like a green and viscous river as we celebrate the 2012 Kids' Choice Awards on Nick. And if you've been wondering whether or not to tune in for the festivities, here's a decision-making bit of intel for ya: E! Online has confirmed that Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Josh Hutcherson are all going to be in attendance at this year's celebration... which in our humble opinion, makes this event worth watching even if you technically haven't been a kid since, oh, sometime in the early 2000s.
Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart are potential award-winners and both poised to take home exquisite blimps honoring their accomplishments, with KStew up for Favorite Actress and Taylor nominated for Best Buttkicker. Plus, lots of our favorite things—including the final film in the "Harry Potter" franchise, as well as "The Hunger Games" (the book) and "Twilight"—are up for awards. And Josh? Er, actually, he isn't in the running for a blimp this year (with "The Hunger Games" only just out in theaters, he'll have to wait until 2013 for his inevitable nomination)...but maybe he just enjoys ceremonies. And slime. Because who doesn't love slime!
Will you be tuning in to see your celeb faves on the Kids' Choice Awards carpet?
Переслать - 'Vampire Diaries' Recap: 'The Murder of One'
by Cassie Title
Well, here's your SPOILER ALERT (in case the episode title wasn't enough of a clue): There was, in fact, a murder of one last night. And as you may suspect, it related to Stefan's and Damon's plan to kill Klaus, because as you remember, killing one Original would kill all of them, due to Esther's binding. Except, these kinds of things never go according to plan, not entirely because the show might be over if so.
So, yeah. Finn is dead. I have to say that I miss him. Truly, I do. Yes, he was creepy and freakishly devoted to his mother, but how's a guy supposed to act when he's been encased in a coffin for 900 years by his vampire/werewolf hybrid brother? He was a good one, that Finn. I can tell he would've been interesting—all those late medieval nights with Sage in Mystic Falls. And he was so classically handsome, too! But enough of this eulogy. We have implications to discuss! Implications galore.
1. Said "murder of one" was supposed to mean that if one Original was killed, the rest would die, too, because the binding spell causes what happens to one, to happen to all (except, of course, for Klaus, although apparently he would still die?) However, this plan was thwarted, because Klaus is always two steps ahead of our fair heroes. He kidnapped Bonnie and forced her to undo the binding spell. So, naturally, Finn's dead, but the rest of the Originals are intact.
2. But there's a more shocking implication! The murder of one may not murder them all in terms of the Originals, but it does murder them all in terms of vampire bloodlines. We discovered this after Finn was killed. A mere hour later, both Sage, who he had turned, and Troy, a man Sage had turned, died gloriously and mysteriously, blood flowing out of their noses and color escaping from their cheeks. So, when an Original dies, every vampire that has been turned by him/her and/or any vampire that has been turned by another vampire who was turned by an Original dies. This means, if all the Originals die, the entire vampire species will become extinct.
3. So, obviously we have a problem. The Originals are no longer linked, so Stefan and Damon are now only focusing on killing Klaus. Except, they're not sure from which Original they stemmed. They were turned by Katherine, who was turned by Rose, and I'm guessing Rose was turned by Trevor who was turned by either Elijah or Klaus. But if she was turned by Klaus, that means that killing Klaus would kill Damon and Stefan. Uh-oh.
4. But at this point, they were just hoping that they didn't stem from Klaus. Except, Caroline realized in epic fashion that even if she and Damon and Stefan aren't a part of Klaus' bloodline, somebody they care about definitely is: Tuh-Tuh-Tuh-Tyler.
5. In other news, don't piss Rebekah off. And especially don't seduce her so her brother's one true love can steal her thoughts (yes, it's true—Sage and Finn were in love, which I love! It would be too sad if she was delusional.) Because, if this happens, if you pretend to like her just to use her, she'll chain you up like a werewolf and bleed you, slowly. Yup, that's what she did to Damon.
6. To gain Damon's freedom, Stefan struck a deal with Klaus: He'd give him eight of the Wickery Bridge Original-killing weapons. Only, Klaus didn't trust him, compelled Damon to tell him the truth and found out that there are 11 stakes, total. Rebekah got sick of Klaus tormenting her plaything, so she set Damon free on the condition that Stefan bring her all of the stakes. So gruesome, so hateful. Remember when Rebekah and Stefan were in love?
7. Stefan and Elena had a heart-to-heart: Neither of them had stopped loving each other, but Stefan straight up said: I know. It's all my fault that you're also in love with Damon. And she couldn't quite say it, but couldn't quite deny it either. Alrightttttt.
8. For a dude that wanted a family, Klaus was pretty not into it. After Finn died, he spoke of him horribly. He wanted only to start his new family of hybrids, take Elena with him and be rid of Mystic Falls. And if Rebekah wanted to stay, she's just as pathetic as Finn. Nice.
9. Alaric's psycho alter-ego hid the stake. The one that could kill an Original and all vampires turned as a result of said original. Meaning, Damon or Stefan or Caroline's bloodline. Meaning, Damon or Stefan or Caroline could die. Oh, my my.
Did you find the episode's revelations shocking? Are you sad to see Finn and Sage go? Could you believe how harsh Klaus was? Will Rebekah stay? Will they ever succeed in killing Klaus? Is Alaric's psycho alter-ego a bigger threat to the brothers than Klaus? Where's Kol? Can we hang out with him? He's hot and cool, right? We want to learn more about him, right? Are you excited to see Tyler next episode? Is Klaus still nursing something for Caroline? How are we going to find out Stefan's and Damon's and Caroline's blood line? How psyched are you to see both Jeremy and Rose next episode? Are you going to survive until April 19? Don't hold back! Tell me everything you think, everything you feel. I mean it! I really, really do. Utilize Twitter. Or the beckoning comments space. Below. Hello!
Переслать - 'Secret Circle' Recap: 'Sacrifice'
by Ryan J. Downey
Some families have a skeleton or two in the closet. Cassie Blake's father has one buried in an old playground; literally.
Here are some of the things we learned during "Curse," this week's episode of "The Secret Circle": John Blackwell tried to summon some demons 16 years ago, some demons who wanted to possess the bodies of the old circle of parents (he says his plan was to use the demons to protect them from the witch hunters, but then the demons wanted to do the whole body-snatching thing instead); Eben is an even nastier villain than we'd have imagined; Blackwell has a skeleton stashed away. Whose skeleton is it? We don't know and we'll have to wait until at least next week to find out.
The Circle themselves are turning into one big "unlucky in love" club, what with Melissa losing Nick, Faye losing Lee, Jake losing Cassie to Adam, Adam falling out of love with Cassie (thanks to that Blackwell elixir). Diana has finally met a new non-magical guy, Grant, but even he breaks her heart temporarily. At one point in the episode, just as a big crisis is converging that requires mandatory attendance at the Secret Circle Clubhouse, Diana wonders aloud why she can't have just a few minutes to herself, noting that she even got her coffee "to go" in preparation for the next big drama.
Speaking of coffee, this week's episode opened in the coffee shop where Cassie works. It's evident that Adam still feels nothing for her. She's devastated, Melissa is sympathetic, but Faye couldn't care less. She's just happy she doesn't have to watch Adam's "oversized lashes" batting at Cassie's "undersized head" anymore (ouch!). The school hockey team is planning a celebration at the Boathouse Grill, but with Ethan all dazed and confused post-Blackwell's return, Adam asks the girls to help out with some waitressing. Melissa and Faye get into a magic-enhanced flirt off for the affections of one of the hockey players, with the puppeteering help of Adam who seems to be participating to stave off his gnawing emptiness.
He seems pretty jealous when his ex (Diana, not Cassie!) goes cavorting off on a date with Australian traveler Grant, who may not be all that he seems. The two of them break into an ice skating rink and proceed to chit-chat, make out a bit, and awkwardly skate around, as lovers do... This later leads to Diana discovering that Grant doesn't in fact own a boat, but rather, he's just a lowly deckhand or something. She gets pretty upset about his ruse and storms off, only to later (after the episode's major action, which we're getting back to in a second) give him a second chance.
Now, about that action! A witch hunter named Samuel escapes from the rest of the witch hunter pack and shows up at Jake's house. The two tussle. Samuel says he's got information for Blackwell. Jake doesn't trust him and the pair keep fighting. Cassie sees this through the window (after all, they still live next door to each other) and comes over to help. They subdue Samuel, who says Eben is trying to resurrect demons. They tie him up and deliver him to Cassie's dad (who earlier in the episode dropped by the coffee shop to invite her to some normal type father daughter mini-golfing), who proceeds to kick and slap him until he reveals everything he knows. Eben is working with a witch, says Samuel, but he's keeping the witch's identity a secret. He's hoping to resurrect some demons, with the help of the witch, in order to use the demonic power to destroy witches.
Here's the kicker: Samuel says (with Cassie in earshot) that Blackwell was more or less up to the same thing 16 years ago. The ritual requires a sacrifice to make it work. Blackwell insists he was only doing so to protect the Circle back in the day and that he sacrificed nobody. He asks Cassie and Jake to gather the Circle at the abandoned house. And while they are off on that wild goose chase, he leads Samuel to that old playground where the demons dwell. He draws a series of magical symbols in the dirt that trap Samuel, who Blackwell has figured out is possessed by a demon himself. Looks like Eben has gotten going with his plan already and allowing Samuel to "escape" to Chance Harbor was simply one piece of it.
Meanwhile the Circle has figured out that Blackwell sent them to the house to keep them protected and away from whatever he was doing. Thinking Blackwell is without magic, they figure it's a suicide mission for him to go against Eben (let alone any demons). Eben has already arrived and delivered a knockout, "Matrix"-like blow to Blackwell and has started cutting upon his hand and bleeding into the ground where the demons live. The Circle arrives and inadvertently free Samuel from the little magical dirt symbol trap. Their Circle magic doesn't do anything to stop him from advancing toward them all possessed like. But Cassie calls upon her dark magic to set him on fire, which works for a minute, until he chokes her.
Blackwell wakes up, sees Cassie in trouble, and yells, "Take me instead!" Demon-possessed Samuel says he doesn't want Blackwell, he wants power. Well, au contraire! Big reveal to not only the audience (well, we sort of know after last week) but to the Circle and the demons: Blackwell has magic! That cool little scar inside his hand gets all crazy looking and presto, the demon is defeated. Disintegrated, in fact (along with poor Samuel).
Unfortunately all of the hubbub allows plenty of time for Eben to have a demon or two hop inside of him just before he escapes into darkness. Blackwell explains that he only hid his magic so he didn't seem like a hypocrite for telling Cassie not to use hers (this guy has an answer for every lie, half-truth, coverup and contradiction he gets caught in, eh?) and all seems restored back to relative normalcy in terms of the uneasy trust everyone has in Blackwell. Remember, Jake and Melissa are totally Team Blackwell. Cassie mostly is...Adam and Diana still seem a bit skeptical.
And they should be. Because the episode ends with Blackwell returning to the playground and digging up a skeleton. Whose? Who knows!
What did you think about last night's "Secret Circle"? Are you Team Blackwell? Do you want to see Adam and Cassie get back together? Are you skeptical of Grant? Sound off in the comments and on Twitter!
