  • Robert Pattinson Didn't See 'Cosmopolis' Coming

It's no stretch to say that Robert Pattinson is taking a huge step forward in the film world in this week's "Cosmopolis." The man better known as Edward Cullen is being directed by one of Hollywood's finest, David Cronenberg, in a movie that's getting some of the best reviews of his career. One even called the film a "game-changer" for the star, and that's something Pattinson has had difficulties coming to terms with.

Pattinson told MTV News during "MTV First: Robert Pattinson" that he knew the first sign of change was coming when Cronenberg told him that he wanted him for the part of Eric Packer. The "Twilight" star's at first couldn't grasp why he would be the actor chosen for such a challenging part.

"That was one of my first questions. 'What do you see in me? Why? Why? Why are you hiring me?'" Pattinson said. "Cronenberg is one of those people when you're asked who you want to work with, he doesn't even come into my head. Because that's like saying, 'Want to work with Orson Welles?'"

Still, Pattinson hasn't let his involvement with Cronenberg or the good "Cosmopolis" reviews go to his head. Instead, he's looking to keep himself challenged with a role in Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert" as Lawrence of Arabia.

"I think as soon as you feel validated, you're a bad actor," Pattinson said. "You have to constantly feel that there's a 99% chance of failure. Total failure. Devastating failure. You should feel like every single job is the potential which you're never going to get another again. Not in a bad way -- you should feel good about it, because then you're in it. It's all about living in the present."

That doesn't mean Pattinson isn't pleased with the good response, though.

"It's a relief not to get sh-- on. I've had a lot of sh-- on my end," he said with a laugh. "You get those first few reviews and it's [a sigh of relief]. And after then you start desperately seeking out the bad ones."

"Cosmopolis" opens in limited release today.

  • 'Skyfall' Featurette Explores James Bond's Home City

    Bond

One of the most defining elements of "Skyfall" is going to be the fact that it is so largely set in London. As proven with the opening moments of the London Olympics, James Bond is one of the most beloved characters in recent British history. That's why star Daniel Craig and director Sam Mendes set out to make the character inherently British in the new movie.

"Sam and I wanted to make it British," Craig said in a new featurette, courtesy of The Huffington Post. "And it's not some flag-waving thing that either one of us is interested in. It's just about basing Bond in Britain."

He continued, "It was very exciting just to get out on the streets and show London for what it is. We made it look very beautiful and very dark and sinister at times, but it's Bond's home."

That proved difficult at times, for as Mendes points out it's "not a particularly photogenic city." But the "Skyfall" team was able to leverage the Bond name to get into areas of the British capital that wouldn't be open otherwise.

"So we got the chance to close down Whitehall," Craig said. "We used the London underground, we closed down tube stations and things."

In the end, all the care for the character of London seems to have made for a better Bond" movie.

"We tend to shoot in the expected areas, but hopefully in unexpected ways and from unexpected angles," Mendes said. "To me, it's just about how you look at the place. And I think in that respect it's useful to be a Londoner."

"Skyfall" hits theaters on November 9.

  • Bond-a-Thond #10: 'The Spy Who Loved Me' (1977)

    The Spy Who Loved Me

MTV Movies Blog is currently running what we call the Bond-a-Thond. Every week we're taking a look back at a single (official) Bond film, giving you the vitals and seeing how it holds up, right up until the release of "Skyfall" on November 9. Feel free to watch along with us and share your thoughts or just kick back and enjoy the Bond.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

Plot: When Russian and British nuclear submarines go missing, MI6 and the KGB send in agents to find them. Falling in love was never part of the plan. [Cue music]

Title Meaning: It is the moniker of Francisco Scaramanga, the assassin at the heart of the plot, who uses a literal golden gun to kill his targets.

Theme Song: "Nobody Does It Better" by Marvin Hamlisch and performed by Carly Simon.

    Bond: Roger Moore

Villains: Karl Stromberg, played by Curd Jürgens, an ocean-obsessed shipping tycoon, and Jaws, played by Richard Kiel, the infamous steel toothed assassin.

    Villains

Bond Girl: Major Anya Amasova, codename Agent XXX, played by Barbara Bach, Ringo Starr's wife.

    Girls

    "Bond, James Bond" Occurrences: 0

Martinis: 1 (the first since "On Her Majesty's Secret Service")

    Card Games: 0

    Cigarettes Smoked: 0

Explosions: 41 (2 of which were nuclear)

    Tuxes Worn: 1

    Kills By Bond: 16

Most Creative Kill: During the pre-credit skiing sequence, Bond kills a pursuer with a flare hidden inside his pole.

    Kill

Gadgets: 007's vehicle of choice for "The Spy Who Loved Me" is a Lotus Esprit that could convert into a submarine.

    Gadgets

Mental State of Miss Moneypenny: Barely around

First Occurrence of Sex: 4 minutes, 50 seconds in

Sexual Partners: 3 (unidentified Soviet agent, unidentified Egyptian woman, Anya)

Most Unrealistic Moments: Bond causes the car that's following him to drive off the road an plummet straight through the roof of a cottage. The vehicle immediately explodes, but Jaws walks out unscathed.

Most "Bond" Moments: His final "We're going to have sex" pun. "Keeping the British end up."

Sign of the Times: In his first scene, Bond gets a text message…which comes out of his watch as a tickertape message.

Place in Bond History: "The Spy Who Loved Me" established two iconic Bond images. First, Richard Kiel as Jaws became one of the series' most recognizable villains, and 007's Union Jack parachute remains closely associated to the character.

Review: "The Spy Who Loved Me" is a Bond movie. With that title come a number of obligations. There has to be a girl, a villain, perhaps a henchman, gadgets, and a final elaborate action sequence. The arch will remain the same, but the strength of those pieces will decide how well the movie works or doesn't work as part of the series.

For "The Spy Who Loved," the girl and the gadgets do enough of the heavy lifting to look past one of the worst main villains in the series to date. Aside from his fascination with the ocean, the only distinguishing characteristic about Karl Stromberg is how comically easy it is for Bond to kill him. Stromberg take one shot at Bond, who simply dives out of the way and proceeds to shoot the villain a number of times at close range.

Thankfully, Bond gets a female counterpart who does more than sleep with him and eventually betray him. XXX has a legitimate beef with Bond, and even though the whole revenge plot disappears in an instant, their dynamic changes up the formula enough to make the film stand out.

The Bond-a-Thond will return next week in "Moonraker."

  • 'Game Of Thrones' Casts Ciaran Hinds As Mance Rayder -- Finally!

    Ciaran Hinds

"Game of Thrones" fans, meet your King-Beyond-the-Wall.

After a long and lengthy search process, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have finally cast Irish actor Ciarán Hinds as Mance Rayder. Entertainment Weekly announced the casting, and we couldn't be more thrilled about the news. While we always pictured Mance to be a bit younger, the "Rome" star has the look and the acting prowess to pull off the complicated Night's Watch deserter-turned-Wildling leader.

Mance will be one of the most integral new characters in the coming seasons of "Game of Thrones," and his relationship with Jon Snow adds some new dimensions to the bastard Stark child. As a character who was previously only discussed with disdain for abandoning his post at the Night's Watch, Rayder has major roles in both "A Storm of Swords" (seasons three and likely four of the HBO show) and "A Dance with Dragons" (likely seasons six or seven).

When we caught up with author George R.R. Martin at Comic-Con, he admitted that the show's team was having a difficult time finding the perfect Mance.

"Well, we're still looking for Mance Rayder," Martin revealed. "They're still holding auditions, so if there are any British actors out there who want a terrific part, Mance Rayder! Contact our casting director -- we need one. As of a couple days ago, they hadn't cast that part yet. We're still auditioning and talking to people."

Martin then confirmed that Mance will appear within the first few episodes of season three.

For you "Rome" fans out there, here's a fun fact: "Game of Thrones" also cast Tobias Menzies as Catelyn Stark's younger brother, Edmure Tully. While Edmure's path never crosses with Mance's, we do get a kick out of the fact that both Brutus and Caesar have been united again.

The third season of "Game of Thrones" is set to debut on March 31.

  • Robert Pattinson Still Can't Comprehend The Popularity Of 'Twilight'

Even if Robert Pattinson is in the process of establishing the post-"Twilight" portion of his career, "Breaking Dawn – Part 2" is still a few months away, and promoting the final film in the series will mean a lot of reminiscing from the star.

During "MTV First: Robert Pattison," the 26-year-old actor said that he has no problem getting all nostalgic about the series that made him a household name.

"It's an amazing experience," he said. "It's a huge chunk of my life, and the end of the movie, the last few scenes, kind of look back at the whole series. It's so sweet."

While he's willing to look back on the "Twilight Saga" happily, he's not quite as willing to go back. "I feel so much older now," he said. "The idea of if I had to do a sequel now, it would be like 'I'm not 17 anymore.' "

And even though it's been four years since it all began, Pattinson still can't figure out what it is that makes the series so popular. "I find it amazing, the intensity of people liking it. It's crazy," he said. "It's an elemental thing that it connected to, which I still don't understand. I hope people like it."

  • 'Apparition' Set Visit With Ashley Greene Goes Behind The Scream

When the lead actress for an upcoming horror movie describes the villain as, "Basically, it's just this really evil, dark thing that kind of capitalizes on your worst nightmare, your worst fears," we'll probably take her word for it.

That's how Ashley Greene described the evil entity that haunts the characters of "The Apparition," during MTV's visit to the set.

"Basically, it's a young couple who is haunted by this supernatural presence from this experiment that has gone wrong years before," said Greene, explaining the story.

Read more of our interview with Ashley Greene and her co-star Sebastian Stan after the jump!

While there's obviously some evil force at the center of "The Apparition," Stan considers it primarily a love story. "I like to think of it as a story about love," he said. "No, I do! It's a relationship in a certain developmental stage of love. It's about two people, they care a lot about each other. Ultimately, the movie is about strange and unusual circumstances that test that love."

As the female lead in a horror movie, Greene is expected to deliver a shriek or two, but for her, there has to be more to the scream. "I'm not the ... horror movie-type girl," she said. "I think it has to have something behind it, and you're not just screaming to scream. Mine is kind of from the gut. It's a little different than the typical, 'Oooooh!' "

  • Robert Pattinson Just Wants A Haircut In 'Cosmopolis' Clip

If you somehow managed to miss last night's "MTV First: Robert Pattinson," you passed up on an opportunity to catch a clip from "Cosmopolis," his upcoming movie. The film, which is directed by David Cronenberg, follows Pattinson as the young billionaire, Eric Packer, as he tries to get a haircut across town.

The clip give you a good sense of how events unfold in "Cosmopolis." The dialogue unravels in long, philosophical threads, delivered by characters in near deadpan. It's certainly a stylized movie, and the preview here should give you the idea.

  • Robert Pattinson Cut It Close In 'Cosmopolis'

As with any film, there are certain hazards that come with making a David Cronenberg film. But when it's a Cronenberg film that you're in, those problems may skew more towards the bizarre.

For Robert Pattinson during the filming of the Canadian director's latest film, "Cosmopolis," those hazards were potentially getting an ear lopped off during a haircut and not choosing the perfect line of dialogue in a sex scene, during which to climax.

"They both had their points," Pattinson said.

The actor dished on all of the experiences of filming a Cronenberg movie when he sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz during MTV First.

In "Cosmopolis," Pattinson plays a listless, young billionaire, who becomes fixated on traveling across Manhattan to get his haircut. When that trim does happen, it comes dangerously close to doing some real damage. "The haircut, the difficult thing, I really wanted it to look like there were patches of scalp showing," he said. "But the guy's obviously not a barber, and he was acting as well with a huge pair of scissors, and he had to cut so close to the skin. He almost cut my ear off. That was kind of frightening, especially when I'm supposed to be this savant that's not [phased]. But I'm terrified he's going to cut my ear off."

The extended sex scene in a limo required an equal amount of nerve, since Pattinson only found out about it on the day of filming. "In the script, they weren't having sex, it was after," Pattinson said. "They finish having sex when the scene happens, and David told me that morning he was like, 'It would be more interesting.' So even the dialogue, everything about it changes completely, 'cause we're, like, talking about the other security guard. It becomes funnier as well."

Filming a sex scene by itself comes with a certain amount a pressure, but adding dialogue complicates the matter. "There's the mechanics of the sex scene. Where does it climax? You're trying to figure that out. There's six pages of dialogue. That was my idea, where to climax. I had the idea of climaxing and saying, 'Do you find this interesting?' That's a cool line."

  • New MTV Doc, 'Inocente,' Explores Immigration, Homelessness, And Art

"Inocente" is a documentary that tells the story of an undocumented, homeless teenager, who uses art to lift herself out of her surroundings. The doc, which will air this Friday (8/17) on MTV at 10 p.m. ET, follows Inocente for roughly two years of her life, as she comes of age and decides to take control of her situation.

MTV News spoke with Inocente in the lead up to the documentary's premiere to learn where she is now and how making a film of her life will hopefully help people to learn about homelessness.

Even with the story of her life premiering on national television, Inocente sees herself and meaning of her art as relatively unchanged. "I think I'm still the same person, just a little bit older now," she said. "I try not to think too much about painting, but in the documentary, it shows how all of my paints are very meaning full to me, but I say in the documentary that I never paint anything sad, so if I'm sad, I try to paint something really happy. It just makes everything better."

In the time since the documentary crew follower her around, however, Inocente's art has become more controlled, but the message has remained the same. "I used to be really messy. I got my hands all over the paint," she said. "I think now I've been a little more clean, and my art has cleaned up a little. It's all still the same. It's still coming from the heart, and it's just matured a little bit."

Inocente agreed to the documentary about her life in order to help spread to word about the conditions in which she was living. "I said 'yes' initially to the documentary because it's giving a voice to those who really don't have one, and it's putting a face on all the issues, so it really is working," she said. "It's rewarding to see that. People are actually paying attention."

One of the first things you'll notice when you see Inocente is the elaborate ways in which she decorates her face. Inocente still does her makeup occasionally, but not as elaborately as she used to. "I used to a lot, not so much anymore, but sometimes I still have the courage to do it. I like to start my days off with paint," she said. "That's why I paint my face, because it's the first thing I see anyways. I do take inspiration from someone. Do you know that band Panic! At the Disco? One of the guitar players, Ryan Ross, he always had this cool makeup, and he's the reason I started painting my face actually."

"Inocente" debuts on MTV at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Friday, August 17.
