- Tennis, Anyone? Six Films To Celebrate The U.S. Open
by Jessica Marshall
You don't have to be court-side at Flushing Meadows to get in on the action at the U.S. Open. While you're watching the biggest stars in the sport of tennis from the comfort of your own home stadium seating, you can also watch some of your favorite movie stars volley and backhand their way to cinematic tennis glory.
While great movies that give the sport of tennis center court are few and far between, there are several that score big. Here are a few, in tennis terms, that make game, set and match.
Serve: "Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Pro"
Steve StifflerSeann William Scott adds another sporting notch to his belt as a former-tennis-pro-cum-school-janitor who finds his calling as a coach and takes a ragtag group of high-schoolers all the way to the state championships. If you've never heard of this film, it's most likely because it went straight to video. But that doesn't mean it's not full of slapstick action on the court a la "Bad News Bears."Ace: "Strangers on a Train"
Classic Hitchcock. A film about mystery, murder, intrigue, suspense...and tennis. Yes, tennis. Hitchcock loved sticking tennis references into his films. In this Oscar-nominated 1951 film, a tennis star stuck in a bad marriage meets a psychotic stranger on a train who presents him with the scenario for a perfect murder. The chance meeting tailspins from scenario to reality, sucking the innocent and unwitting pro into a scandal that frames him for the murder of his wife. The whirlwind climaxes in what is perhaps the most chilling tennis scene ever filmed, followed by one wild ride on a carousel.Love: "Wimbledon"
What happens when you pair a washed-up tennis star with an up-and-coming phenom? Love! Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst star in this 2004 rom-com about love at the world's most famous tennis competition. The sport doesn't take a backseat to the make-out sessions though. You could actually learn something about playing the game by watching this film, as it's full of intense tennis matches.Deuce: "Nobody's Perfect"
A young Chad Lowe stars in this 1990 rom-com, playing a college student whose tennis scholarship is threatened when he falls madly in love with one of the school's female tennis players. Naturally, his solution to this problem is to masquerade as a woman and pair up with his would-be lover for a game of doubles, in the hopes of winning her heart (and the game, of course). Kind of like "Tootsie" meets "Ladybugs," except with racquets and tennis skirts.Match Point: "Match Point"
Woody Allen serves up a tale of passion, greed and high society in this 2005 thriller about a washed up tennis pro (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who complicates his charmed life and social standing when he gets involved in a steamy affair with his future brother-in-law's girlfriend (Scarlett Johansson). Tennis isn't really the point of this film, nor does it play a huge role, but in the end, it all comes down to that crucial match point.Extra point: "Monty Python's Flying Circus"
OK, so this is not a film. But the sketch "Sam Peckinpah's Salad Days," featured in the third season (1971) of the award-winning show by the famous British comedy troupe, is worth its weight in cinematic gold. In an attempt to satirize the excessively violent filmmaking style of director Sam Peckinpah ("Straw Dogs") and the idyllic stage musical "Salad Days," the gang poses as young socialites frolicking in a park. When one suggests an innocent game of tennis ("Anyone for tennis?"), the scene quickly escalates into one of hilarious, over-the-top bloodshed and horror that leaves the viewer no choice but to laugh hysterically. The mere suggestion of a game of tennis will never be the same.Did we miss any of your favorite tennis-themed films? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!
Переслать - Tim Burton Brings 'Frankenweenie' To Life For Fall Movie Preview
by Bryant Gilmore
When Tim Burton's highly anticipated "Frankenweenie" arrives in theaters on October 5, it will be the culmination of a closely guarded project that Burton felt was necessary to take his time with, as he did with his stop-motion animated classic "The Nightmare Before Christmas."
MTV News caught up with Burton about "Frankenweenie," a project long in the making, as part of our Fall Movie Preview week. Based on the classic "Frankenstein" tale, Burton's latest centers on a boy who brings his dog back from the dead, leading to all the quirky havoc one expects from a Burton film.
"There were always other characters and kids I wanted to portray," Burton said. "For me, it's like a more pure version of it."
See an exclusive photo from "Frankenweenie" right here!
With so much time and care going into the development of "Frankenweenie," Burton set out to assemble a small but elite team to bring the film to life. "We kind of kept 'Frankie' a smaller group of people, more of like an intimate family," he said. "So it took a while."
When asked if the advances in stop-motion filmmaking had changed things for Burton, he said they hadn't at all.
"There's a few technical little things in terms of being able to follow the movements and all but the great thing about it is it doesn't really change, you know, it's still people moving a puppet a frame at a time," said the accomplished filmmaker. "And so I think that's part of the joy of it. You walk onto the set and it's lit like a real movie. I mean, we went for that kind of old horror movie style lighting, so to see that take shape on a little set, it's beautiful."
"Frankenweenie" comes alive in theaters on October 5.
From "Les Mis" to "Breaking Dawn," "The Hobbit" to "Skyfall," the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest upcoming flicks in our 2012 Fall Movie Preview. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films' biggest stars.
Переслать - James Bond Day Set For October 5
Sony Pictures will honor James Bond with his own day on October 5 to celebrate the character's 50th anniversary.
The studio sent out a press release announcing James Bond Day, which will occur exactly 50 years after "Dr. No" premiered in London. Sony is promising "a day-long series of events for Bond fans around the world," which we hope means that Daniel Craig and Queen Elizabeth II will skydive at various locations around the world like they sort of did at the 2012 London Olympics. That's what it means to be on her majesty's secret service, right?
In all seriousness, James Bond Day will include a number of events to honor 007 including "a global online and live auction charity event of 50 lots to benefit twelve charitable institutions organized by Christie's in London, a global survey to discover the favorite Bond film by country, a film retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, a Music of Bond night in Los Angeles hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and an exhibition, 'Designing 007: 50 Years of Bond Style,' at TIFF in Toronto."
There also will be the release of the recently-announced documentary "Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007." Meanwhile, the James Bond Blu-Ray boxed set will have already been released on September 24, while "Skyfall" hits theaters on November 9.
"Skyfall" producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement, "We are absolutely thrilled to be celebrating James Bond's golden anniversary on film with this special day of events for Bond fans around the world."

Переслать - Eddie Murphy Shopping 'Beverly Hills Cop' TV Show To Networks
If Eddie Murphy has his way about it, we will soon be seeing a "Beverly Hills Cop" TV show.
This isn't the first we've heard about the planned TV show, but it is the first time the series has seemed like it could actually become a reality. Vulture has learned that Murphy has teamed up with "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan to develop the "Beverly Hills Cop" series pitch, and that the duo have partnered with Sony Pictures Television to adapt the story to the small screen. Murphy would act as executive producer and also play an on-camera role. That team started pitching the "hour-long crime procedural" to broadcast networks yesterday.
"Beverly Hill Cops" is a franchise that's very important to Murphy, so it's no surprise that he's trying to resurrect it in a way that stays faithful to the overall story. Read on to find out some details about the show's planned plot.
Murphy teased in an interview with Rolling Stone last year that a "Beverly Hills Cop" series could follow the adventures of Axel Foley's son.
"What I'm trying to do now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley's son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit," he said. "I'd do the pilot, show up here and there. None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force the premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn't be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong."
No word if that has changed now, but we do know that the plan is to have it be a "buddy cop show."

Переслать - Ira Glass And Mike Birbiglia Get 'Up Close' With MTV's After Hours
Ira Glass and Mike Birbiglia can now finally join the prestigious ranks of John C. Reilly, Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson as being some of the lucky few to be invited to hit After Hours programming "Up Close with Josh Horowitz." While we were disappointed by the lack of cuddling and massages this time around, we really think we cracked to the center of the duo's new film, "Sleepwalk With Me," in the latest short.
No topics were off limits in this in-depth interview, from Horowitz's dirty glasses to spelling Birbiglia's last name to just how easy it is to learn to drive. Glass and Birbiglia also spent some boring time discussing their new movie, which had a record-breaking opening weekend last week. But hey, we can talk about that any time. This is the time to get up close.
We also really appreciate the many ways Birbiglia has taught us how to use a camera during this segment. You can use it to help you tie your tie, block it with your body to let your friend know he's being boring or, best yet, use it to perfect your suggestive glances. No wonder it took so long to make "Sleepwalk With Me." (Just kidding!)
"Sleepwalk With Me" expands to 20 theaters this weekend, so make sure you go check it out.

Переслать - RZA's 'The Man With The Iron Fists' Gets Killer Soundtrack
By Bryant Gilmore
With Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth on board, it seems that "The Man with the Iron Fists," Wu-Tang Clan member RZA's feature film debut is destined to be a sure-fire hit, and its soundtrack should be no exception.
The soundtrack, which drops on October 23, two weeks before the film's premiere on November 2, will feature contributions by RZA's fellow Wu members Method Man, Ghostface Killah, and Raekwon, Talib Kweli, The Black Keys, and Wu Tang fan and rapper, Kanye West, who reportedly recorded a song called "White Dress."
The soundtrack is to be released on RZA's own Stone Temple Records and distributed through Stax/RED Distribution, and in addition to the new songs, RZA says that fans can expect some newly re-purposed Wu Tang tracks along with some classic Stax music from artists Isaac Hayes, Mable John, and William Bell. To tide fans over, on Sunday, August 26th, RZA released a song off the soundtrack called "Built for This" which featured Method Man, Freddie Gibbs and StreetLife.
"The Man with the Iron Fists" stars RZA as a black-smith in 19th century China who gets caught up in a war between warriors and assassins threaten his community. Along with RZA, the cast features Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, and Pam Grier.
Will you be picking up the soundtrack? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!
Переслать - 'Sinister' Cured Ethan Hawke's Fear Of Making Horror Movies
Ethan Hawke isn't exactly the first actor that springs to mind when you're thinking of a lead for a horror movie. The 41-year-old actor has never really starred in a scary movie per se (unless you count "Daybreakers"), and there's a good reason for that.
Until starring in "Sinister," in theaters on October 5, Hawke thought actually making a horror movie would be too frightening of an experience.
Check out two exclusive images from "Sinister" and the rest of our Fall Movie Preview.
Hawke, who's currently in Greece working on the sequel to "Before Sunset" with Richard Linklater, spoke to MTV News for our Fall Movie Preview and shared his old fear of making scary movies.
"I really believe that's why for years I never wanted to make one of these movies," Hawke said. "It's because I thought it would be absolutely terrifying to make it, but the irony is, of course, it's incredibly fun to make it. It's kind of like telling a ghost story at midnight with a group of friends. You just laugh a lot, and it seems really silly. I just had a great time making it. I'm not one of those mad enthusiasts of the genre that you hear about. I like certain scary movies that are good. It was just silly and fun."
As it turns out, making a horror movie actually isn't that different than making any other film, as long as you're working with the right people. "It's all the same stuff, if you're working with a filmmaker that's talented, that knows about the architecture of film, knows how to tell a story," Hawke said. "There's a real discipline to making these movies. It's like a comedy."
Hawke said that like any other genre, horror has its formulas. It just takes knowing the "math." In the case of "Sinister," the man for the job was director Scott Derrickson. "It's all about the timing and the math of it," Hawke said. "What makes something spooky and what makes something cheesy and stupid is a razor's edge. That was the fun of it for me. This guy, Scott Derrickson, had made an incredibly movie called 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose.' I met him, and it was kind of obvious to me that he was a real filmmaker."
Even if horror has a formula, it take an extra bit of originality to make something special. "The layers of it are what make it so interesting," Hawke said. "On one level, it's about a guy who puts his work ahead of his family. It's a simple moral tale on that level. On another level, it's about the dangers of watching horror films, and somewhere inside the film itself is something dangerous to you, which is really subversive and f---ed up and interesting."
"Sinister" opens in theaters on October 5.
Переслать - Tom Hardy, Leonardo DiCaprio, And Tobey Maguire Take On World Of Animal Trafficking
Is Hollywood ready for a gritty anti-animal poaching drama in the vein of Steven Soderbergh's Oscar-winner "Traffic"? Actors Tom Hardy, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire think so.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the idea for the film came from Hardy, who was inspired by friends who served as operatives in the Special Forces and later went on to become anti-poaching activists in South Africa and other nations.
The "Dark Knight Rises" star has reportedly teamed up with DiCaprio and Maguire to produce the animal trafficking film for Warner Bros., no word yet on whether the three actors will also star in the film, but we'd be even more interested in the project if so. DiCaprio and Maguire are childhood friends who we'll finally get to see onscreen together in next summer's literary epic "The Great Gatsby," and Hardy and DiCaprio became friends from their time together filming "Inception."
The combined acting chops of the trio would likely make for fantastic onscreen fireworks, particularly set within an action-oriented animal rights-themed film. The THR story mentioned "Traffic" as a benchmark for the film's tone, but we're thinking if they add some "Blood Diamond" into the mix they can maintain the intensity of the subject matter without getting too preachy.
Anyone who's ever watched anti-poaching documentaries or specials on the Discovery or National Geographic channels, or super sad "Gorillas in the Mist" for that matter, is well aware of the fact that the world of animal poachers is despicable, insanely dangerous and devious.
Переслать - Shia LaBeouf Really Tripped Acid For His New Movie
Shia LaBeouf is taking method acting to a whole new level.
We already know he's planning some indecent exposure for his upcoming film "Nymphomaniac," but it turns out that he also took the idea of "getting into character" a bit far in his indie "The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman." USA Today recently spoke with the actor about the upcoming movie, including the scene where his character trips on acid. It turns out that LaBeouf didn't want that experience to be fake.
"There's a way to do an acid trip like 'Harold & Kumar,' and there's a way to be on acid," he said. "What I know of acting, Sean Penn actually strapped up to that [electric] chair in 'Dead Man Walking.' These are the guys that I look up to."
Apparently things got a bit intense while filming the acid trip scene on set, as first time feature director Fredrik Bond wasn't too comfortable with the fact LaBeouf was actually on acid.
"Sometimes, it does get real," LaBeouf said to the day he shot the scene. "Too real for a [director] who's trying to keep a diplomatic set."
That's not the only flick LaBeouf is planning to go fully method for. When he caught up with MTV News recently while promoting "Lawless," LaBeouf teased that he's expecting to have real, unsimulated sex for his upcoming Lars von Trier movie "Nymphomaniac."
"[The movie] is what you think it is," he said. "It is Lars von Trier, making a movie about what he's making. For instance, there's a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we're doing it for real. Everything that is illegal, we'll shoot in blurred images. Other than that, everything is happening."
He added, "It's going to be a wild movie."
Do you think that LaBeouf is doing the right thing by actually experiencing these events instead of just acting them? Or do you think he's going too far? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!
