  • Keanu Reeves Wants 'Man Of Tai Chi' To Be More Than Action

If you've been paying attention at all to what Keanu Reeves has been up to lately, you should know that he's prepping his directorial debut, "Man of Tai Chi." Now, usually when an actor makes his or her transition to directing, it's usually with a smaller indie film to work out the kinks.

That's not what Reeves is doing.

"Man of Tai Chi" is an ambitious, big-budget martial arts film, one that Reeves has been working out in his head for half a decade and one that will employ some state-of-the-art technology to take the audience into a fight like never before.

MTV News' Josh Horowitz spoke with Reeves at the premiere for his new filmmaking documentary, "Side by Side," to ask why he decided to go so big with his first effort.

For Reeves, choosing "Man of Tai Chi" as his first feature film came down to necessity. "It was the story I was hoping to tell," he said. "I had worked on the script for about five, six years, and it just eventually became in my head, and I had to tell the story."

But he needed to tell the story on his terms. Reeves is an unabashed fan of martial arts films, but he needed his film to be more than just a series of fight sequences. "My take on it was to not have action for action's sake and try to incorporate instead of action sequences… they were also story telling, not just plot but character development," he said. "It wasn't just evil versus good or angry and defending. It was a little more about the journey of this person and going through the martial arts of who they were and who they are."

As always with Reeves, there are lingering questions about the status of a third "Bill and Ted" movie. Last week, we learned that "Galaxy Quest" director Dean Parisot had joined the film, signaling some forward progress for the sequel. Reeves offered a brief updated and filled us in on the rehearsal sessions Alex Winter told us about earlier this year.

"We like the script. We're just going to see if we can get it made," Reeves said, adding that he and Winter had, in fact, gone back into versions of the characters for early rehearsals. "We've stayed really great friends, so it's always great to see him and with the writers, saying some of the dialogue, just to see how that would feel, and it was interesting."

    Chris Hemsworth

At least for the next few years, Chris Hemsworth will be able to keep the longer locks that have come with his newfound status as an A-lister. Next year, the "Avengers" member takes a trip back to the 1970s for director Ron Howard and the Formula 1 racing drama, "Rush."

    Rush

    Rush

The epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. • Jesse Plemons: The True 'Friday Night Lights' Breakout

When a television show receives the right mixture of passionate admiration from fans and mediocre to low ratings, things will almost never end well. For "Friday Night Lights," the five-year run finished about as well as it could. The story wrapped up nicely, and the fans got satisfying closure. Surely, the powers that be would reward the talented cast whenever they went onto their next project.

Kyle Chandler was always going to benefit from his time as Coach Taylor. How could he not? This year he has "Argo" and "Zero Dark Thirty," arguably two of the most anticipated movies of the fall. Next year, he's working with Scorsese.

But what about the younger stars? Taylor Kitsch does a great (not so) bad boy. Adrianne Palicki has got attitude and looks in spades. All Zach Gilford would have to do to collect a check is say "Grandma" like he does. At least one of the leads was destined for big things.

But what if we told you that the real breakout from "Friday Night Lights" was none other than Matt Saracen's right-hand man, Lance Landry Clarke, Jesse Plemons?

Fresh off of "Friday Night Lights," Plemons scored a scored a supporting role in a big movie that shouldn't have surprised anyone. Of course "FNL" creator Peter Berg was going to jump at the chance to cast some of his own in "Battleship." Plemons stepped aside to let his more conventional leading man of a co-star, Taylor Kitsch, take top billing and, eventually, lead his second tent pole of the summer to a disappointing open.

While Kitsch was bouncing around Mars and Palicki couldn't find a movie that wouldn't get delayed for more than a year, Plemons signed on to Paul Thomas Anderson's follow-up to "There Will Be Blood," "The Master." He even delivers a thematically important line in the trailer. But while we all wait to see how many Oscar "The Master" will collect next February, Plemons picked up another TV gig in the process.

    Spoilers ahead!

As Todd on "Breaking Bad," he became one of two major new characters in the show's fifth season. Last night's episode, "Dead Freight," unveiled the true nature of Todd, ironically with echoes of Landry Clarke a la season two. The episode's final twist will be a decisive turning point for the story.

To summarize, in the same year that his "Friday Night Lights" co-stars didn't quite live up to the expectations of box office analysts and fans, Jesse Plemons joined the best show on television and a film by one of the greatest working directors.

    Not bad, Lance. Not bad.

  • Stallone And Schwarzenegger Want To Break Free In First 'Tomb' Image

    The Tomb

During the "Expendables 2" panel at Comic-Con, Sylvester Stallone defended the value of 80s style action movies, like the ones that made him famous. He believes that there still is a place at the theater for thrills like that, but it takes a little more muscle to get people in the seats. In other words, you need more stars.

Stallone has really taken that to heart, especially with his new film "The Tomb," in which he stars opposite his former rival, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Wall Street Journal (via HeyUGuys.co.uk) debuted the first official image from "The Tomb," which finds the action legends locked up in the same prison.

Click after the jump to see the first full image from "The Tomb."

Stallone and Schwarzenegger are clearly in great shape—we're ignoring that picture of them together in the hospital—and even though they have "Expendables 2" out this week, this is the first time they've starred as leads together.

The pairing is a dream come true for anyone who enjoys 80s action and has argued with a friend over which muscle man reigned supreme. Check out the full image and the official plot synopsis below.

    The Tomb

Ray Breslin (Stallone) is the world's foremost authority on structural security. After analyzing every high security prison and learning a vast array of survival skills so he can design escape-proof prisons, his skills are put to the test. He's framed and incarcerated in a master prison he designed himself. He needs to escape and find the person who put him behind bars.

"The Tomb" comes out sometime in 2013.

What did you think of the first image from "The Tomb"? Can Stallone and Schwarzenegger make a movie worthy of their classics? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

  • 'Bourne' Brings Down 'Dark Knight' At Box Office

    Bourne

The reign of "The Dark Knight Rises" as the box office champion has come to an end. After three weeks of untouchable supremacy, it was "The Bourne Legacy" that put a stop to the winning streak.

The spy reboot took in just over $40 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, near where the "Bourne" series performed during opening weekends for the first two films. The "Legacy" total fell far below the last entry's bow, however. "The Bourne Ultimatum" opened to $69 million back in 2007, when Matt Damon was still the series lead.

The political satire, "The Campain," starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis took in a respectable $27.4 million.

Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie brought its domestic total to $390 million after earning $19.5 million this weekend. That brought its total just past "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2" in the all-time chart.

Head over to MTV News for your full box office results.
