- Bond-a-Thond #11: 'Moonraker' (1979)
MTV Movies Blog is currently running what we call the Bond-a-Thond. Every Wednesday we're taking a look back at a single (official) Bond film, giving you the vitals and seeing how it holds up, right up until the release of "Skyfall" on November 9. Feel free to watch along with us and share your thoughts or just kick back and enjoy the Bond.
Moonraker (1979)
Plot: After a space shuttle is stolen off the back of an airliner, Bond must discover who is behind the theft.
Title Meaning: "Moonraker" is the name of the line of space shuttles created by Hugo Drax, one of which is stolen during the opening sequence.
Theme Song: "Moonraker" performed by Shirley Bassey.
Bond: Roger Moore
Villain: Michael Lonsdale makes a memorable turn as the jet black-haired nihilist Hugo Drax.
Bond Girl: Dr. Holly Goodhead, a CIA agent embedded in Drax Industries, played by Lois Chiles.
"Bond, James Bond" Occurrences: 1
Martinis: 1
Card Games: 0
Cigarettes Smoked: 0
Explosions: 1
Tuxes Worn: 1
Kills By Bond: 12 (includes 2 innocent scientists Bond uses as guinea pigs)
Most Creative Kill: Bond throws a would-be assassin through a clock and into a piano, quipping "Play it again, Sam."
Gadgets: A dart-shooting watch, safe cracker, hover-craft gondola, spy boat
Mental State of Miss Moneypenny: Delightfully incredulous
First Occurrence of Sex: 25 minute, 45 seconds
Sexual Partners: French pilot, Holly Goodhead, Brazilian agent
Most Unrealistic Moments: Jaws fall from an airplane, lands in a circus net, and lives.
SCARIEST THING IN THE WORLD: This.
Most "Bond" Moments: "I think he's attempting re-entry!"
Sign of the Times: The previous film in the series teased that Bond would return in "For Your Eyes Only," but thanks to the success of "Star Wars," producers moved up the space-themed movie to benefit from the sci-fi boom.
Place in Bond History: "Moonraker" successfully rode the wake of "Star Wars" and went on to earn $210 million worldwide, a series record that wouldn't be broken until "GoldenEye" in 1995.
Review: "Moonraker," or "The One Where Bond Goes Into Space," won over crowds in 1979 because of its connection to "Star Wars," which had changed movies forever just a couple years earlier, but managed to entirely missed the point. Though "Moonraker" only spends its final act in space, it manages to do so in the most implausible, hokey way possible. (For the record: Turning off the gravity doesn't just make everyone walk really slowly.)
But even the most egregious space travel impossibilities seem believable compared to the feats expected from Roger Moore as James Bond. Never has his miscasting been so apparent. Fights sequences roll by as a laughably slow pace. Every quip comes off painfully smarmy, and the Connery cool is nowhere to be found.
A more-elaborate-than-usual evil scheme and a fun turn by Michael Lonsdale help Drax stand out a higher-class villain, and the set design and special effects sequences have made "Moonraker" one of the more memorable entries during the Moore era.
The Bond-a-Thond will return next week in "For Your Eyes Only."

Переслать - Hugh Laurie Turns Down 'RoboCop' Villain Role
"RoboCop" has lost one of the biggest names from its roster.
News broke back in June that Hugh Laurie was in talks to play the main villain in "RoboCop," but assumptions that he had signed on board were premature. Variety's Jeff Sneider tweeted that Laurie is now officially out of the potential role.
"HUGH LAURIE definitely out of ROBOCOP reboot, not that he was ever 'in,'" he said.
That means that the part of Omni Corp's evil CEO is still up for grabs. We're sure that it won't take long for director Jose Padilha to fill that role, and he probably has a whole list of other big Hollywood actors interested in the part. "RoboCop" does have one of the most impressive casts that we've seen recently, after all. Currently signed on are Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, Jackie Earle Haley and Michael Kenneth Williams.
"RoboCop" follows a Detroit police officer named Alex Murphy who is killed while trying to fend off some local criminals. He is given a second lease on life by OmniCorp, and is resurrected as a mostly-robotic crime fighting machine. Kinnaman will play Murphy, Oldman will play the scientist who creates his alterego, Cornish is Murphy's wife (who was only seen in flashbacks in the original "RoboCop") and Jackson will play a charismatic media mogul. Meanwhile, Williams will play Murphy's partner and Ehle will play a character named "Liz Kline." "RoboCop" is slated for a summer 2013 release date.

Переслать - New Zealand Tourism Draws 'Hobbit' Fans With '100% Middle-Earth' Campaign
New Zealand is a beautiful place. This is something we've known for years. But when Peter Jackson filmed his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy in his home country more than a decade ago, people started visiting New Zealand for a whole new reason.
We've always wished that Middle-Earth could be a real place, and Jackson's films seemed to make that wish become a reality. Now that Jackson is filming his new "The Hobbit" trilogy in New Zealand as well, it seems as though the country is embracing the fantasy world it has now become associated with.
New Zealand Tourism has released a new promotional video touting it's connection to "The Lord of the Rings" films. "100% Middle-Earth," the video claims. "100% Pure New Zealand."
We didn't need the connection to J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novels to convince us that New Zealand is a place we want to visit. The imagery included in the video speaks for itself, though the country's seemingly relaxed lifestyle certainly is reminiscent of the one described in "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." Ian Holm, the actor who played Bilbo Baggins in "The Lord of the Rings" films and has a role as "Old Bilbo" in the new "Hobbit" films, appropriately narrates the entire video.
"Traveller, your dreams are waiting," he promises. They certainly are, though we feel it might be cheaper for the time being to visit Middle-Earth via the big screen rather than in person. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is due in theaters on December 14. Special thanks to TheOneRing.net for bringing this great video to our attention.

Переслать - Chuck Norris Won't Return In 'The Expendables 3'
"The Expendables 3" might be lining up a pretty impressive group of new actors to join the cast, but it turns out that not all of the big names from "The Expendables 2" are planning to return. In a new interview, Chuck Norris said that one "Expendables" film will be more than enough for him.
When speaking with Access Hollywood at "The Expendables 2" premiere, Norris admitted that he has no plans to return for future sequels.
"No, just number two. This is it for me," he said. "It was special just to be able to do the film with guys I've known for many, many years and get a chance to get together and fight with them. It was a lot of fun. Plus getting a chance to meet Terry [Crews], who I hadn't met before, and Jason Statham, who I hadn't met. It was fun just to do that."
At least Nicolas Cage is coming on board for number three, and there's the possibility that Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Mickey Rourke or Wesley Snipes join the film as well.
During producer Avi Lerner's interview with Total Film earlier this month, he claimed that "all the existing stars" will return for "The Expendables 3." It seems like it was Norris who wanted to sit this one out instead of the filmmakers not having a place for him, and we can't fault the action star for that. After all, there are many other actors who could take his place.

Переслать - 'Butter' Trailer Spreads The Satire On Thick
It's time the world of competitive butter carving got the big screen treatment it deserves. Thankfully, "Butter," a new satire starring Jennifer Garner and Hugh Jackman, has come along to fix that.
The first trailer for "Butter" has gone online over at Yahoo! Movies. It's time you got yourself educated.
Click past the jump to check out the trailer and read a plot synopsis.
Set in the highly competitive world of championship butter carving, Butter blends social commentary, outrageous comedy and heartfelt drama in telling the story of the ambitious Laura Pickler (Garner), the self-anointed First Lady of Butter Carving. Refusing to accept that her husband (Burrell) wants to step down after his 15-year run as the "Iowa State Butter Carving Champion," and therefore end the Pickler family's reign in the spotlight, Laura takes a stab at the title herself. But her bid for glory is complicated when two unlikely contestants enter the race – one, her husband's hard-living mistress (Wilde), and the other a 10-year-old foster child named Destiny (Shahidi). Enlisting the help of her high school sweetheart, Boyd (Jackman), Laura will stop at nothing to be crowned champion, even if it means resorting to sabotage. Part political satire, part Capra-esque comedy, Butter is a story about what it means to win at all costs and against all odds.
"Butter" will available On Demand starting September 7 and in theaters on October 5.

Переслать - How A Musical Number Prepared Joseph Gordon-Levitt For 'Premium Rush'
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has had more than a few physical roles in his career as an actor. But flying around rotating hallways and running down the streets of Gotham are nothing compared to the work he did on a fixed-gear bike for "Premium Rush."
When MTV News' Josh Horowitz spoke with Gordon-Levitt and his director David Koepp, the actor filled us in on why such a physically demanding role was just what he needed when he accepted the part.
Back when "Premium Rush" was casting, Gordon-Levitt was just coming off of another movie that forced him to the opposite end of the spectrum physically.
"The first time I read the script for 'Premium Rush,' I was right in the middle of shooting '50/50,' where I was playing this guy battling cancer, whose body was giving up on him," he said. "So to play a guy who was really confident and healthy with his body and the idea of going to New York City and riding every day and getting in shape really appealed to me."
Koepp became convinced that Gordon-Levitt was up to the task of riding a bike all day after a musical number he performed on live TV. "The thing I think that struck me the most when I was thinking of him for the part was [Gordon-Levitt] had hosted Saturday Night Live that time and did the Donald O'Connor number, which was so incredible, and you could tell that it was just beating the sh-- out him, but because it's a musical number, he has to smile," he said. "You're chipper, but you're bouncing off stuff, and those ribs had to hurt. I had a feeling that physicality would not be a problem."
Переслать - 'Arrested Development' Will Debut On Netflix In Spring 2013
With every day of production on the new season of "Arrested Development," the long-awaited continuation of the cult favorite comes more and more into view. Earlier this week, we learned that the original ten episodes may be expanded into 13, since according to star David Cross, "There's too much story. Some characters will have two-parters."
Now there is word from The Huffington Post and an unnamed source within Netflix that the vague release date of 2013 for the new season has between specified a bit. The entire new season of "Arrested Development" will hit Netflix at once during the Spring of 2013.
This is certainly good news for all you never nudes out there, so hopefully you're as excited as we are!

Переслать - In Which Ari Graynor Learns She's About To Be An Aunt On 'Fringe'
It may be two years since Ari Graynor appeared on "Fringe" as Detective Olivia Dunham's sister, Rachel, but now seems as good a time as any for her big return. Not only is the show going into its last season, but there's also a baby on the way for Olivia and Peter.
That news, however, is—well—news to Graynor, who stopped by the MTV News offices earlier this week. "She has a child? No way! No way! There you go, never know maybe I'll appear for the birth," she joked.
"Then I'll write some emails about it. 'Hey, J.J. [Abrams,] what's happening with me? I know you're really busy. We were thinking about me on the show.' I've never seen the show. I would be in some dimension, I guess if I came back. I would have to be in at least one dimension whatever that one may be."
In the end, though, Graynor just isn't sure any of it will happen. "I don't know, maybe. That was one of those jobs where I was meant to do three episodes and three turned into 10. It's been a long time since I've been on the show, so I don't think I'm coming back," she said. "But you never can tell, especially on a show like that."

Переслать - 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Auditions: Paul Scheer As Christian Grey
With producers set for "Fifty Shades of Grey" and the casting process heating up, we're guessing that plenty of actors and actresses are going to start throwing their names into the pot to play Christan Grey and Anastasia Steele in the adaptation of the hit erotic novel. The one man we didn't expect to get in on the action? "The League" comedian Paul Scheer.
The actor posted his "audition tape" to College Humor, but it's clear that he wasn't very prepared to read for the part of Christian. After attempting some of the character's more seductive lines, Scheer kept bursting out laughing and finally had to ask, "What is this book about?"
We didn't know that there was anyone out there who still didn't know that "Fifty Shades of Grey" is the erotic story inspired by "Twilight" that tells the story of two sexy twentysomethings getting it on for 500 pages. Once Scheer heard what he was actually auditioning for, he seemed much more interested, though we will ever forget his horrific attempt at being "sensual."
For what it's worth, we think Sheer would be a great pick for "Fifty Shades of Grey"... or at least his casting would get us interested enough to go see that version of the film. We just didn't know he was so into the "butt stuff."
