  • 'Despicable Me' Minions Will Get Spin-Off Movie

    Minions

At this point, it seems safe to say that the Minions in "Despicable Me" are the true stars of that movie, and now they're going to get their own.

Though they were originally only adorable secondary characters who help out Steve Carell's animated character Gru, the Minions have gone on to be the most recognizable faces of the series and get their own Universal Orlando themepark ride. With "Despicable Me 2" gearing up, Deadline is reporting that DreamWorks is prepping a spin-off movie that will center around Gru's sidekicks.

Apparently the studio is planning the release of "Despicable Me 2" and this untitled movie a year apart. It's unclear how exactly the Minions will make their own film work since, you know, they don't exactly speak English, but Illumination Entertainment's Chris Meledandri has reportedly come up with a way around that with directors Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, and "Despicable Me 2" co-director Chris Renaud.

The "Despicable Me" ride only recently opened at Universal Orlando, but apparently it's been met with a great reception. It helps that "Despicable Me" was a massive success for DreamWorks, which is nice for the studio since it didn't cost much to make. The sequel has Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand and Kristen Wiig reprising their roles from the first film, with the new addition of Al Pacino. It will be interesting to see how many of those actors' characters are incorporated into the Minion movie, if any. DreamWorks is likely planning how to make "Despicable Me 2" tie into the spin-off now.

  • Jeremy Renner Eyeing Julian Assange Role In WikiLeaks Film

    Jeremy Renner

In the past two years, Jeremy Renner has gone from well-respect, but relatively unknown indie player to an A-list action hero, but for his latest project, the actor is eying a rather dramatic role.

According to Deadline, Renner and "Breaking Dawn" director Bill Condon are considering joining DreamWorks' proposed WikiLeaks film. Renner would take on the role of the site's infamous leader Julian Assange.

Read more about the project after the jump!

The DreamWorks production is just one of several Assange projects in the pipeline, this one coming from two books, "WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War On Secrecy" by David Leigh and Luke Harding and "Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange At The World's Most Dangerous Website" by Daniel Domscheit-Berg.

You can see Renner next in "The Bourne Legacy," which is due out next months. Bill Condon has "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" in theaters this November.

  • 'Anna Karenina' Director Joe Wright Releases 6-Minute Clip

    Anna Karenina

    By Ashleigh Schmitz

Rarely, outside of conventions like Comic-Con, do we see directors releasing lengthy clips from their upcoming films. In a generous sneak peak, "Anna Karenina" director Joe Wright previews a beautiful 6-minute glimpse into the film, which is set to show at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Check out the full clip after the jump!

In the clip we see a stunningly decked-out Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina joined by both male leads Aaron Johnson, as her lover Count Vronsky, Jude Law, as her bland husband Alexei Karenin, and for a brief moment Michelle Dockery as Princess Myagkaya (consider our "Downton Abbey" withdrawals cured, for now). The scene unfolds through a ballroom with an impressive fireworks display, then to a staircase and ending in Anna's bedchambers.

What's remarkable, as Wright reveals before the clip, is that "just as the Russian aristocracy of the 19th century could be described as living on a stage our story unfolds in a dilapidated theater." The film was shot almost entirely in this location with more than 100 sets, creating a "fluid linearity: you can walk from one house under the stage, straight onto the horse-training ground, or go through a door and there's a Russian landscape," he says. "Just as the Russian aristocracy of the 19th century could be said to be described as living on a stage."

"Anna Karenina" will be released in the U.K. on September 7 and in the U.S. on November 9.

  • Edgar Wright And J.J. Abrams Teaming Up For Sci-Fi Film 'Collider'

    Wright Abrams

What do you get when you combine J.J. Abrams, Edgar Wright and "I Am Legend" screenwriter Mark Protosevich? A movie we can't wait to see, that's what.

Deadline is reporting that the trio has teamed up on an ultra-secretive sci-fi project called "Collider." Apparently Wright will direct the film and co-write it with Protosevich, with Abrams producing the project under his Bad Robot banner.

This will be Wright's first foray into the science fiction genre, so we're glad he'll have Abrams and Protosevich to help guide him. Of course, he'll be busy with "The World's End" and (hopefully) "Ant-Man" for the next few years, so it's unclear just when he'll set to work on this. /Film is reporting that "Collider" originated from an idea Wright came up with though, so it is likely a priority for him.

For now, we're just excited that it's in development. Protosevich has been working on a lot of high profile projects that we haven't had a chance to see yet, so we aren't quite sure how his voice will affect the finished product. To date, his most impressive screenwriting credit is "I Am Legend," though he has story credit on "Thor." However, Protosevich also wrote and is producing Spike Lee's upcoming "Old Boy" remake, and he also penned the "Mass Effect" and "Jurassic Park IV" screenplays.

It seems like Protosevich's brand of sci-fi is much more in line with Abrams' than Wright's is, but hopefully that doesn't mean Wright will be entirely giving up his quirky roots for this project. And hopefully it also doesn't mean things aren't looking good for "Ant-Man." Abrams' schedule might be clearing up now that "Star Trek 2" is in post-production, but we'd happily wait a few more years for this movie to ensure that Wright's venture into the Marvel universe actually gets made.

  • 'Gangster Squad' Loses Theater Scene Following Colorado Shooting

    Gosling gangster

Following the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado during a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" Friday, Warner Bros. has opted to remove and reshoot some major scenes in their upcoming Los Angeles crime movie "Gangster Squad."

Variety has confirmed the Los Angeles Times' initial report that Warner will be scrapping the "Gangster Squad" scene where a group of the film's titular gangsters storm a movie theater with machine guns and kill many of those in attendance. That scene is depicted in "Gangster Squad's" trailer -- which, unfortunately, was being screened before "The Dark Knight Rises" -- and WB was quick to yank it from theaters on Friday as well.

In addition to losing that scene, Variety says that some other parts of the movie will be reshot as well, at least according to their source. At this point, it doesn't seem like "Gangster Squad" will be delayed from its September 7 release date. Warner Bros has not made an official statement about the matter yet.

This ultimately just amounts to bad timing for the Ruben Fleischer period drama, though Warner Bros is clearly making the right move going forward.

Variety reports that, like at Warner Bros, TV executives made sure to pull any TV episodes or movies that might be airing that have scenes that could be related back to the Aurora massacre. We're glad everyone in Hollywood is being so careful during such a sensitive time. Warner Bros is likely very glad right now that Batman has such an anti-gun stance in "The Dark Knight Rises," considering how violent that film is.

Do you think Warner Bros made the right move in yanking this scene and filming reshoots? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

  • New 'Lawless' Photos Reintroduce Mask-less Tom Hardy

    Tom Hardy

One film you'll have to keep an eye out for this August is "Lawless," the Prohibition-era bootlegging drama from Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, and director John Hillcoat. We had chance to check it out at a screening during San Diego Comic-Con, and it's worth looking forward to, especially after Hardy killed it in "The Dark Knight Rises."

Now there are some new photos (via Hey U Guys) featuring the Bondurant boys from the film. The images give you a pretty good idea of the look of the movie, plus we always appreciate any more sneak peeks at Guy Pearce as an eccentric lawman from up north.

Check out the images after the jump!

  • Peter Jackson Reveals Comic-Con 'Hobbit' Video Diary

    Hobbit

    by Ashleigh Schmitz

Couldn't make it to Comic-Con earlier this month? Thanks to Peter Jackson for posting the eighth production video from the set of "The Hobbit," you can pretend you were there! The footage from the last production days in New Zealand is breath-taking and spine-tingling, but it won't make the December 14 release date arrive any sooner.

Though you don't get to see Q&A from the panel (maybe he'll post another video?), Jackson transports you to Bilbo's house in the Shire like it hasn't been nine long years since "Return of the King." Reunited with "Lord of the Rings" favorites Sir Ian McKellan, Orlando Bloom and Andy Serkis, the video gives behind-the-scenes scoop along with insight into the makeup and prosthetic artists and set designers' many different processes.

The dwarves give a glimpse of the comically large sets – a barn where everything is so oversized, for the dwarves of course. Art director Alan Lee shows us sets that rival the size of Helm's Deep. Lee Pace, playing elf king Thranduil, shows us how to move like an elf. And makeup artists explain why they used over 450 miles (yes, miles) of yak hair to bring the hairy army of dwarves to life.

Indeed, Jackson's production video touches on almost every aspect of the film's production and gives just a peak at what's to come when "The Hobbit" hits theaters later this year. We can't wait to see more.

    Watch the video here!

  • Mike Epps To Return For 'The Hangover 3'

    Mike Epps

Apparently Doug is headed back for "The Hangover 3." You know, the other Doug.

That's right, Mike Epps will be back for another go in "The Hangover" universe. Variety is reporting the man who played "Black Doug" in "The Hangover" will reprise his role when the Wolf Pack heads to Tijuana. Maybe he's around to sell the guys more roofies.

Actually, he likely won't. We don't know much about "The Hangover 3" beyond its locations (Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Tijuana) and its cast, but we do know that it's supposed to ditch the tried-and-true formula of the previous two films and try something new. In fact, director Todd Phillips recently said this movie will "surprise a lot of people."

"We adhered to the formula in the second one, for those of you who've seen it, and the third one, which would close the whole sort of trilogy, which now it would be a trilogy — even though we thought we would never make a second one, let alone anybody see the first one — I think it will take place in Los Angeles and maybe not adhere to the structure," star Bradley Cooper teased back in December. "It might be different."

"The Hangover 3" will again star Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, with Ken Jeong returning for a beefed up role. Hopefully Justin Bartha will return to double the Doug factor as well. The movie will hit theaters on May 24, 2013. Phillips has already said this will be the final movie in the trilogy.

  • Daniel Radcliffe's Most Anticipated Projects, From 'Horns' And Beyond

    Daniel Radcliffe

    by Ashleigh Schmitz

Happy birthday, Daniel Radcliffe! The "Harry Potter" star turns 23 today. Rather than float into muggle oblivion, the most-recognized wizard in the world has been keeping busy. Since wrapping the "Harry Potter" films, Radcliffe has starred on Broadway in last year's successful revival of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," and in the 2012 horror hit "The Woman in Black."

Today we toast Radcliffe's 23rd year by looking ahead to his future projects.

    "Kill Your Darlings"
Starring alongside Elizabeth Olsen and Dane DeHaan, Radcliffe will portray poet Allen Ginsberg in this thriller-biopic focusing on the Beat Generation of the 1930s. Most importantly, Radcliffe will don a new pair of glasses for the role. Here's hoping he can make the on-screen move to contacts in a future film.

    "A Young Doctor's Notebook"
For this four-part British miniseries Radcliffe will share the role of Dr. Vladimir Bomgard with Jon Hamm, at different ages. So far this miniseries only looks to be released in the UK - cue the petition by Radcliffe fangirls for a stateside release.

    "Horns"
According to a plot synopsis, "This rock and roll infused dark fantasy explores why bad things happen to good people, and what the loss of true love can do to a man." Shooting begins this fall, and will mark Radcliffe's third thriller since "Harry Potter." Do we sense a theme?

    "The F-Word"
No, not that f-word. Radcliffe's first rom-com, starring alongside "Ruby Sparks" star and writer Zoe Kazan as friends, is set to be released next year.

Which Radcliffe movies are you most looking forward to? Tell us in the comments section below or let us know on Twitter!
