  • Keanu Reeves Explored The Future Of Film With New Doc 'Side By Side'

The world of moviemaking is currently in the middle of a drastic change. As digital production becomes more and more convenient, even the most dedicated celluloid die-hard directors like Martin Scorsese are turning to the newer technology.

This transition is at the heart of the new documentary "Side by Side," which features actor—and new director—Keanu Reeves talking with some of the greatest living directors, like Scorsese, James Cameron, David Fincher, and Christopher Nolan, about the differences between film and digital and how cinema will be affected by the change.

MTV News' Josh Horowitz spoke with Reeves about his involvement in the film and how sitting down with these filmmakers affected his own views of the art.

While Reeves' own directorial debut, "Man of Tai Chi," just recently wrapped filming, he insisted that "Side by Side" developed on its own and not as a crash course in filmmaking. "It was not planned. It was not coincidence at development, but having the experience of working on this documentary certainly prepared me in a way to the forest that I was walking into in terms of directing a film, certainly a digital film," Reeves said. "A lot of the questions and work flow of 'How is this going to work?' I had the experience of seeing beforehand."

The rarity of Reeves' opportunity to speak candidly with these directors was fortunately not lost on the actor. "I was very lucky," he said. "To spend time with artists who I respect and love and whose movies I love was really a great honor, just to be able to share the passion and as you say, talk shop."

From all of his discussion about the quickly shifting landscape of filmmaking, Reeves was able to learn that, more than anything, the future of the medium is still up in the air.

"I learned in terms of that it's in flux as much as it's ever been. If you take a look at 'Hunger Game,' photochemical, 'Dark Knight,' photochemical, 'Social Network,' digital," he said. "IMAX, 3-D, digital, also if we talk about streaming or the way that we can watch content now on mobile devices and pads and tablets and bricks and shells and young filmmakers and experimental filmmaking and documentary, which has also really benefited from digital, it's a really creative time, but this documentary is also looking at that there is photochemical, but that decision is becoming less and less an option."

  • 'The Bourne Legacy,' 'The Campaign,' And More: Double Feature Friday!

    Renner Double Feature

This week, Jeremy Renner is an airhead, Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis face off in an election, and Spike Lee and Mookie return to Brooklyn.

Check out all of this week's pairing on Double Feature Friday!

"The Bourne Legacy" & "National Lampoon's Senior Trip"
What better way to prepare for the latest offerings from Jeremy Renner than to go back to the very first film that he ever made! There is little that I can say that would convince you that this is a film worth watching better than the trailer below.

    "The Campaign" & "Election"
When Alexander Payne entered the world of high school elections, he created one of the most twisted and hilarious comedies of the 90s. In it, Reese Witherspoon plays the immediately iconic Tracy Flick, a busy body who is determined to win the election for class president. Opposite her is Matthew Broderick as Jim McAllister, a teacher at the school who breaks the rules to ensure she doesn't. The movie is funny and sad and insanely entertaining.

"Red Hook Summer" & "Do The Right Thing"
While an obvious choice, the only real pairing you can make with Spike Lee's latest film is the movie that started it all for him. "Do The Right Thing" introduces us to Lee and Mookie, the Brooklyn pizza delivery guy who returns to the screen in "Red Hook Summer." Lee's newest exploration of his home borough, Brooklyn, marks the writer-director's homecoming to the streets that made him an indie star.

If one movie is never enough for you and you're looking for a flick to get you in the mood for this week's new release, Double Feature Friday is here to help. Every week we break down the new releases and pair them with older movies that you should catch before heading out to the theater. Or just skip the new movie and check out the classic we recommend.

  • 'Red Dawn' Trailer Blows Stuff Up Real Good

    Red Dawn

At the very least, the first trailer for the "Red Dawn" remake is a magical trip back to 2009.

Thanks to MGM's bankruptcy, the nearly three-year-old retelling of a Chinese North Korean invasion of the United States is finally getting a release. The film hits this Thanksgiving, but today Yahoo! Movies dropped the first trailer for "Red Dawn," starring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, and Adrianne Palicki.

Check it out after the jump!

In the remake of the cult classic from 1984, an American city awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky – shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target. Quickly and without warning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fight back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselves into a guerilla group of fighters. Taking inspiration from their high school mascot, they call themselves the Wolverines, banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back their freedom.

  • 'Bill And Ted 3' Beams Up 'Galaxy Quest' Director

    Bill and Ted

Talk about some excellent news, dudes. Not only does it seem like "Bill & Ted 3" is actually happening, but stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are attached to reprise their roles and according to a new Vulture report, Dean Parisot is attached to direct.

But that means Parisot won't be able to start filming until after "Red 2" (which starts shooting in the spring) wraps, but there could be worse news. At least this movie is actually happening!

"Bill & Ted" creators Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson already wrote a script for the project that will share with audiences where Bill and Ted are in today's world instead of having the new movie be either a sequel or a prequel. Both Reeves and Winter have been interested in returning to the material for a while, so it seems like whatever script Solomon and Matheson created was good enough for them.

When MTV News caught up with Reeves back in April, he teased that a script was "six weeks away," which about lines up with the timeline Vulture is presenting. He also gave us some insights about how this movie will line up with the end of its predecessor.

"When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn't happened," he said. "So they've now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there's an element of time and they have to go back."

  • Justin Theroux To Direct Will Ferrell And Steve Carell In 'Swear To God'

    Will Ferrell Steve Carell

After being a behind-the-scenes voice in Hollywood for nearly half a decade, Justin Theroux is finally going to be making his feature directing debut.

The "Tropic Thunder" and "Iron Man 2" scribe is going to be helming and rewriting the upcoming Warner Bros. comedy "Swear to God," Deadline reports. The movie is set to star frequent collaborators Will Ferrell and Steve Carell, with Ferrell reportedly playing a narcissist who believes that God has reached out and spoken to him. "Due Date" screenwriters Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland wrote the original script.

This is a big move up in the world for Theroux, who has been dating Jennifer Aniston since May 2011. Theroux started out as an actor, appearing in films like "Mulholland Dr." and "American Psycho," before transitioning to writing in 2008. This isn't the first time he's been eyed to write and direct a comedy in recent years, either. It was Theroux who wrote the current script for "Zoolander 2" and who Paramount had hoped to direct it back in 2010, though it's unclear where that project stands now. He also was tapped to direct "Chief Ron" back in 2009.

The plan is to have "Swear to God" start filming next July, after Ferrell and Carell have finished their commitment to "Anchorman 2." The acting duo will have worked together on both "Anchorman" movies as well as "Bewitched," "Melinda and Melinda" and several episodes of "The Office," so it's a guarantee that they'll have onscreen chemistry. We're intrigued by the character Carell will be playing, though. Frequently when he and Ferrell have worked together in the past, he's played a lovable doofus, but we'd love to see him tackle one of his more serious roles for this film.

  • 'Bourne Legacy' Cast Explains The Sideways Sequel

"The Bourne Legacy," which opens today, plays out parallel to the story of Jason Bourne and the first three films in the series, a unique angle for a sequel.

When MTV News spoke with the cast and director Tony Gilroy, they helped clarify exactly how Aaron Cross fits into the world of the series.

Rachel Weisz explained that while "Legacy" exists separately from the rest of the series, it reveals some secrets we didn't know about before. "It completely does its own thing," Rachel Weisz said. "It introduces new characters, but it lifts the curtain on the first three films. It sort of says, 'If you think you know who was in charge, you were wrong. This is who is really in charge.' [You see] the men behind the curtain pulling the puppet strings."

The movies shared qualities help make the mysteries of the previous films a little more fleshed out according to Edward Norton. "It pulls right out of the tail end of the last one," he said. "It continues to widen its investigation of the subterranean world and take you into parallel corridors of it in a way that feels really real. It's very easy at the beginning of this to believe the events of those films that we've already seen are sort of now reverberating and having to be dealt with."

But the shared universe doesn't mean a cameo from Matt Damon. Gilroy was quick to dispel all of that. "Those conversations only happen in this room. There's been absolutely zero real conversation about any of that," Gilroy said. "Everything we get comes from speculation from press and from the blogosphere. We're not that organized."

  • Russell Crowe Goes Biblical, Beardy In 'Noah' First Look

    Noah Crowe

Darren Aronofsky's epic retelling of Noah and his ark may not be the version you're used to, but the first official still from "Noah" features a bearded Russell Crowe, looking about as biblical as we expected him to look.

USA Today has the official first look at Crowe as the legendary ship builder, who must collect two of every animal in order to save all life on Earth from the devastation of an oncoming flood.

Check out the full image after the jump!

Aronofsky has built an impressive cast for his follow-up to "Black Swan." Aside from Crowe, he's added his "Requiem for a Dream" star Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone as the film's villain, Anthony Hopkins as the world's oldest man, Methuselah, and young up-and-comer named Emma Watson.

    Noah

The first image comes more than a year and a half before "Noah" actually reaches screens, so you'll have to wait quite a while before you get to see the entire epic.

"Noah" is scheduled to weather the storm on March 28, 2014.

  • The Wolverines Prepare For War In 'Red Dawn' Poster

    Red Dawn Banner

    By Ryan Gowland

Back in September of 2009, the remake of "Red Dawn" started production in Michigan under the direction of first-time helmer Dan Bradley, who had worked as a stunt coordinator and second unit director on three "Bourne" movies, including the upcoming "Bourne Legacy."

The cast was filled with relative unknowns, including Australian actor Chris Hemsworth as the lead, alongside Josh Hutcherson, the most well known of the cast having just appeared in "Journey to the Center of Earth" following performances in "Zathura" and "RV." Expected to arrive in 2010, "Red Dawn" took an unexpected detour which has finally come to an end.

Check out the new poster for "Red Dawn" after the jump!

A victim of MGM's financial issues, "Red Dawn" was put on the shelf until FilmDistrict decided to dust it off last year. The intervening years gave the producers time to change the invading country from China to North Korea, and gave both Hemsworth and Hutcherson time to gain more recognition. The rest of the cast have done well too, with Isabel Lucas playing Athena in last year's "Immortals" and Adriane Palicki scoring roles in an ill-fated "Wonder Woman" pilot and the now-delayed "G.I. Joe: Retaliation."

At long last, a new poster for "Red Dawn" has arrived, which could mean that a trailer is not far behind. Hutcherson told MTV News in 2010 that the remake will keep the "American, patriotic feel of the original" which is certainly true of the poster, released by Yahoo!, which highlights its cast standing in front of an American flag and brandishing plenty of machine guns.

What do you think of the poster? Are you excited for the "Red Dawn" remake to open on November 21st? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!
