  • 'Glee' Recap: 'Makeover'

    by Melissa Albert

Just three episodes in, and "Glee" is already doling out the makeovers. Rachel gets hotter, Kurt gets more confident, Schue finds a new lease on life and Brittany...well, Brittany still believes Artie's a robot. Some things never change.

In an effort to make over all of McKinley, Blaine decides to run against Brittany for class president, because his rabid extracurricular addiction isn't enough to fill the Kurt void. (Side note: McKinley has a Superhero Club, Ren Fair Appreciation Society and some kind of...dance battle club, yet the glee kids are the nerdy ones?) Blaine turns in a boringly straightforward performance of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," but at least he does it in a Robin costume.

In New York, Kurt has no time for dance battles: He's got an interview with Vogue.com! Somewhere between his scaly Godzilla slacks and hideous hippo brooch, he charms Isabelle Klempt (Sarah Jessica Parker), a Vogue web queen and stalled designer who comes off like a declawed, defanged Anna Wintour. Hummel and Kempt are basically besties from the get-go, and he lands the internship!

After mainly sitting out the last two episodes, Mr. Schue is back with a storyline: He's got glee director's block. But when a fellow director's club is defunded, Schue's inspired: He's going to apply for a panel to increase government arts funding. Alternatively, he could take Sue's advice and get into the birthday clowning biz. Or has anyone suggested fake-mustache modeling? Just spitballing here.

Meanwhile, the McKinley presidential campaign is getting ugly, sort of. Brittany starts a birther campaign against Blaine, and then the two of them take unnecessary running mates. Brittany chooses Artie for the robot vote, and Blaine chooses Sam for the "not-gay" vote. Brittany and Sam (or the Blond Dream Machine, as they're known in our "Glee" fan fiction) pump themselves up singing Hole's "Celebrity Skin," Blaine removes his bow tie and Artie channels his inner Dick Cheney. The presidential debate is about to begin!

Artie's boring speech (issues? goals?) is wiped clean from memory when Sam responds to a question by taking off his shirt. We swear, it makes sense in context! It would make even more sense in the context of dinner on our speedboat.

Then the presidential candidates take the mic. Blaine plays hardball, implying that a vote for Brittany is a vote for lighting people on fire, which we're pretty sure was stolen verbatim from a recent presidential campaign ad. Brittany responds with a heartfelt speech in which she promises to make school last 365 days a year. Interesting strategy, B.

And the winner of McKinley High class president is...
    COMMERCIAL BREAK CLIFFHANGER!!

We vote Sam's abs for McKinley High President! Four more years!

No, wait, Blaine wins. But Kurt's too busy being a hotshot New Yorker to even take his victory call.

Turns out Kurt's youthful enthusiasm is just what burnt-out fashionista Isabelle needs. Kurt takes advantage of his new position to invite Rachel—tired of being mocked for her reindeer sweaters by NYADA ballet bitches—to break into the Vogue couture closet in the middle of the night. The Vogue fantasy is stretched a bit thin when Isabelle discovers them mid-break in...and reacts with delight? Somewhere, Anna Wintour just whispered, "Release the hounds."

Isabelle and and Kurt make over Rachel, using her as their model for a web video set to the tune of "The Way You Look Tonight"/"You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile." As we haven't seen Sarah Jessica Parker sing since the last time she enticed children to their doom, it definitely made us smile. Later she advises Kurt to stay in the fashion biz instead of reapplying to NYADA next year...and he doesn't even call Blaine to discuss it.

Rachel's riding high on her sexy makeover, and Brody's feeling the new look, perhaps best described as Flashdance Casual. Brody liiiikes her, and she starts sweating him, too, after their steamy duet on Sheryl Crow's "A Change." Outside of an unfortunate sequence in which they "sexily" eat ice cream, it's pretty cute, and she asks him to dinner the next night. You go, Rachel Berry!

Sam and Brittany are getting closer, too (Blond Dream Machine 4ever), but Sam takes a break from flirting to talk down an unhappy Blaine, who's realizing that, with Kurt's departure, being president of McKinley High feels like an empty victory.

Last warning, Kurt: Appreciate your amazing boyfriend. Next week's episode is called "The Break-Up," and we're kind of freaking out.

Rachel makes a mess trying to cook for Brody, but at least she looks fly. The two of them finally share a kiss...then immediately hear an ominous knock on the door. Sure hope it's not Finn, because we're allergic to TV clichés that have been dialed up to 11.

Aaaand, IT'S FINN! Excuse us while we tend to our hives.

Song of the episode: "Celebrity Skin," because Sam and Brittany are dancing their way to It Couple status...in our hearts.

What did you think of last night's episode of "Glee"? Are you shipping Sam and Brittany too? Are Kurt and Blaine headed for a break-up? What about Rachel and Finn? Tell us all your thoughts and theories in the comments and on Twitter!

  • 5 Things To Do Before Seeing 'Pitch Perfect'

    by Jessica Marshall

Warm up those vocal chords, people—here comes "treble!" (And if you don't know what that means, you deserve to be pitch-slapped.)

"Pitch Perfect" hits select theaters this week, and then sings its way into a theater near you October 5. Loosely based on the nonfiction book "Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory" by Mickey Rapkin, the movie follows the musical adventures of the a cappella groups of fictional Barden College. The notes, sparks and snark fly between the cocky reigning champion all-male group and the dejected, old-fashioned all-female group when freshman Beca (Anna Kendrick) arrives on campus and shakes up the musical status quo. Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson, Elizabeth Banks and Skylar Astin also star in this fest of musical mayhem from director Jason Moore (who also brought the world the hit puppet musical "Avenue Q.")

But before you can indulge in the mm-bopping, doo-wopping good time that is sure to ensue in theaters, here are five things you really must try:

    Read the book
Back in 2009, GQ editor Mickey Rapkin went deep into the heart of the quirky, collegiate subculture we've come to know and love with the nerdy passion of a thousand band geeks. He followed three a cappella groups as they sang their way in multi-part harmonies seeking the holiest of holies—a place onstage at the International Championships of A Cappella (ICCA) finals...and all the drama, heartbreak and jazz-handedness that went with it.

    "Gleek" out
Fox's hit series "Glee" is basically the high-school version of this movie, with the difference being that the gleeful group from William McKinley High considers themselves members of a "show choir" rather than an a cappella group (and they often sing with an actual band of random extras). There's plenty of dramatic pitch-slapping action in the show to satisfy full-fledged a cappella enthusiasts and non-musical types alike, with a heaping side portion of snazzy choreography.

    Watch "The Sing-Off"
From 2009-2011, this former NBC reality show pit talented a cappella groups from all over the nation against each other in a series of "American Idol"-esque vocal challenges. One of the groups featured in "Pitch Perfect" (the book), the all-male Tufts Beelzebubs, was on the show in its first season and placed an impressive second overall. The performances are really fun to watch, and viewers are treated to some behind-the-scenes action too.

Start or join an a cappella group
Dust off the ol' pipes and see if you can warble on key. You cannot fully know the glory (and major guts) of the a cappella world unless you give it a try. And don't forget the jazz hands...they're crucial to all-around success.

    Stage a [insert talent here]-off
It's one of the most dramatic memes in the world of performance art, whereby two or more groups of artists gather in a semi-sketchy abandoned space (in the case of "Pitch Perfect," it's an empty swimming pool) to one-up each other with their respective talents. Gather your peeps and rivals and try it. This Crush writer may or may not have participated in an unsanctioned Britney Spears dance-off in her college days that may or may not have been the most glorious thing ever.

Do you plan to see "Pitch Perfect"?

  • 'Glee' Star Amber Riley Reminisces About Her First Premiere

We've really been enjoying all the fresh new faces on the third season of "Glee," but we also can't help pining for a few familiar ones, as well, including Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera and Amber Riley. Thankfully, all three are on Twitter, so while their on-screen antics have been scarce, we can keep up with their real-life goings-on just fine.

Before an all-new episode of the song-and-dance series, Ms. Riley took to Twitter to share a photo from her very first "Glee" premiere. And while the show has only been on for three years, it's astounding how much younger the cast looks in this image. They're just babies!

Tonight marks Sarah Jessica Parker's "Glee" debut as Kurt's mentor during his internship at Vogue. So set those DVRs, Crushers, because this is gonna be a good one! (Check back tomorrow for our full recap!)

Are you wishing a few of your "Glee" favorites would return to Lima already? Are you excited for SJP tonight? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!

  • Has 'Pitch Perfect' Star Elizabeth Banks' Career Just Been One Long Effie Audition?

'Round these parts, Elizabeth Banks is best known as the powdered, bedazzled, wild-wigged Effie Trinket in "The Hunger Games"—but did you know that long before she became the face of Capitol Couture, she was pushing the envelope in all sorts of directions playing everything from a political wife to a wannabe porn star? Well, guess what: She was.

In fact, if the writers at NextMovie are to be believed, Elizabeth has spent practically her entire career taking on acting jobs that would prepare her for the name-making role of Effie (even if nobody in the "Hunger Games" movie ever actually, um, says her character's name. Whatever. DETAILS.) And if you'd like to see her journey from budding starlet to Panem princess, you can take a gander at their list of Elizabeth's seven most in-Effie-able roles to date.

Check out Elizabeth Bank's seven most Effie-like roles at NextMovie.

  • Oliva Munn Is Nick's 'New Girl'

The revolving door of love interests on Fox's "New Girl" continues to turn, as our favorite hapless bartender lands a new romance.

Deadline reports that "Magic Mike" actress Olivia Munn is joining the series for a multiple-episode guest arc as Nick's latest lady. The report describes her character, Angie, as "sexy, earthy, charming and can hold her own with the group."

The second season of "New Girl" premiered this week, with recently unemployed Jess entangled with not one but two possible suitors in the form of Josh Gad and David Walton.

And for those of you shipping roommates Jess and Nick, stars Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson told MTV News recently you'll just have to wait. "I think that something eventually is going to happen, but they're not telling us, and I'll be honest, I don't think they know," Jake said.

"We like doing scenes together, so our main wish is that we get to do scenes together whether that's romantic scenes or just hilarious scenes, hilarity," Zooey added.

What do you think of Olivia Munn as a love interest for Nick? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!

  • 'Hotel Transylvania' Stars Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg School Us In Vampires 101

One of the lesser-known side effects of being in a vampire movie, any vampire movie, is as follows: Immediately after being cast, you are hastily inducted into a secret society of experts on the blood-sucking befanged, where you receive professional instruction, informational packets and several documentary DVDs on the general history and biology of vampires. (You also get a nifty key chain! Or so we've heard.)

So, with Selena Gomez and Andy Samberg's "Hotel Transylvania" out this week, MTV News' Josh Horowitz took advantage of their newly gained knowledge to get some inside scoop on what, exactly, the deal is with vampires.

Among the surprising answers: The desire to drain human beings of their life's essence is a simple matter of biology, not a character flaw (take that, anti-vampire bigots!). Also, Justin Bieber is, shockingly, not a vampire. (Or at least his ladyfriend won't say so in public.) But hey, if you want a firsthand account of what it's like to guzzle human blood, Selena has all the info you'll ever need:

"It was salty," she said. Which sounded exceptionally hardcore, until a moment later when she admitted: "It was my own."

Euuuuugh. Okay, then! Just, y'know, don't do that whole self-exsanguinating thing too often; we hear it'll make you go blind.

Do Selena and Andy seem like vampire experts to you? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!

  • 'Looper' Has Us Looking Back At The Hottest Time Travelers Of All Time

Our cinematic love affair with Joseph Gordon-Levitt continues this weekend with the release of his sci-fi thriller "Looper." Joe plays an assassin employed by the mob of the future, to kill marks sent back to the past in which he lives. Follow so far? Well, things take an even trippy-er turn when his latest assignment is his future self (played by Bruce Willis).

Though at times dizzying in its logic, the film is a winning entry into the time-travel genre—and one that got us thinking about all the era-hopping flicks that came before it. And that's when we noticed something: Time-travelers are a good-looking bunch! From Hugh Jackman to Paul Walker, many of Tinseltown's tastiest have gone back (or forward) to the future. So without further ado, here is our list of the hottest time travelers of all time!

Michael J. Fox, "Back to the Future"
No one was more of a Fox in the '80s than Michael J. Thanks to "Family Ties," the actor was already a household name when he hopped into Doc's DeLorean for the 1985 blockbuster "Back to the Future." Two sequels followed, cementing Marty McFly's status as perhaps the most beloved (and babelicious) time-traveler ever. Even in those stone-washed jeans.

Keanu Reeves, "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure"
Before he felt the need for "Speed" or entered "The Matrix," Keanu Reeves was just a slacker high-school student who didn't want to do his homework. That is, until he and friend Bill traveled through time to round up a slew of famous faces for his history paper. Party on, dude!

    Hugh Jackman, "Kate & Leopold"
What happens when a 19th century Duke teleports to modern-day New York City? He falls in love with Meg Ryan, of course! But all you really need to know about this rom-com can be summed up in five words: Hugh Jackman in a waistcoat. Bring us all the smelling salts!

    Paul Walker, "Timeline"
The moral of "Timeline": Never go back to 14th century France to retrieve your archaeology professor. It's not worth the A grade (though gawking at Paul Walker throughout the decades might be...).

    Ashton Kutcher, "Butterfly Effect"
Ashton Kutcher should be well-suited to time travel considering he spent years in the disco decade on "That '70s Show," but "The Butterfly Effect" wasn't a huge hit with critics. Though that doesn't mean he isn't easy on the eyes while changing the future by hopping into the bodies of his younger self.

Eric Bana, "The Time Traveler's Wife"
In "The Time Traveler's Wife" (based on the heart-breaking debut novel by Audrey Niffeneger), Eric Bana plays librarian Henry DeTamble, who was born with a genetic defect that causes him to involuntarily time travel, popping up naked (yes, naked!) throughout his wife's life until their timelines sync and they fall for one another.

...We're still thinking about the naked part...

Who is your favorite cinematic time traveler, Crushers? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!

  • Kristen Stewart: Ooh La La Lovely At Paris Fashion Week

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with staff members. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

How do you say "Spotted" en français? With Fashion Week in full swing in the capital of couture, celebs are descending on Paris to see what's chic this year—and Kristen Stewart was ready to ooh la la along with the best of them. The actress was front and center at the Balenciaga show, a favorite designer for whom she served as a spokesmodel this summer (remember those cool monochromatic ads for the brand's Florabotanica perfume?).

Kristen stood out in the crowd with printed pants, a yellow quilted jacket, dewy skin and voluminous hair—despite being fresh off a trans-Atlantic flight. (Honestly. How is that fair?) And with a smile that stayed in place throughout the show, for which KStew had a front-row seat, we're thinking that maybe she saw something she liked in the City of Lights.

  • Emma Watson's London 'Perks' Screening: A Rare Fashion Miss

Confession: In our wildest fashion fantasies, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" starlets Emma Watson and Nina Dobrev are the leaders of a secret sartorial society where only the most savviest of stunners are allowed entry. Their style senses are just that finely tuned! But, sadly, even the mightiest fall from time to time, and it looks as though Emma has made an uncharacteristic misstep with her latest look.

The 22-year-old was in London today for a special screening of her coming-of-age tale, and let's just say her outfit did nothing to help her stand out. Emma donned a little black Dior dress finished with a pair of fitted trousers and black pumps. But the frilly frock surely could have stood on its own, right? Or, if Emma really wanted to wear pants, they would have been better complemented by a sparkling top and blazer. At the very least, the actress could have benefited from a few more accessories to make her look pop, but in the end, it was a bit of a drab mash-up, we're sorry to say.

But, Emma, you are still one of our favoritests. Promise. Just review these all-black ensembles you flaunted to perfection in the past, and let's regroup next week, K?

What do you think of Emma's look? Is it a hit or a miss? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!
