  • Roger Ebert Documentary To Be Produced By Martin Scorsese

    Ebert

    By Ryan Gowland

Not every film critic is going to get a movie based on their life story, but not every film critic has the renown of Roger Ebert, whose 2011 memoir Life Itself has been optioned to become a documentary from "Hoop Dreams" and "The Interrupters" director Steve James and executive producers Steven Zaillian ("American Gangster" and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" scribe) and some guy named Martin Scorsese.

Ebert himself broke the news on his Twitter (via The Film Stage), then explained how the project came together to CriticWire.

"This dropped out of the blue," explained Ebert. "They say they have a good idea for an approach. I believe Steve James' 'Hoop Dreams' is one of the greatest documentaries ever made, and my hopes for this are so high. I never thought of my book as a doc. I'm keeping hands off any involvement, such as with the screenplay, because I don't want to be a third wheel. Whatever they do I will be fascinated."

Ebert began his career as a writer working for the Chicago Sun-Times in 1967, around the time that his first book, Illini Century: One Hundred Years of Campus Life, was published. A few years later, Ebert would co-write the screenplay for director Russ Meyers' 1970 cult film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and would later go on to pair with fellow Chicago film critic Gene Siskel on the locally-produced TV show Sneak Previews in 1975. The show brought the "thumbs up, thumbs down" method of movie reviewing to the public when the show was picked up by PBS three years later and eventually became the nationally syndicated Siskel & Ebert & the Movies in the 80s. Ebert continued with the show following both Siskel's passing in 1999, and after Ebert was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2006. Ebert continued to work through his illness, which ultimately resulted in the removal of a section of jawbone and Ebert losing the ability to speak, eat or drink.

Through it all, Ebert has continued to work as a critic, commenting in Life Itself that "I believe that if, at the end, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do." It wouldn't be surprising that that's the ending note that James will try to stick, but there will be plenty to explore along the way, including Ebert and Meyers' ill-fated Sex Pistols movie and his relationship with other filmmakers and, particularly, Siskel. Should make for a fascinating documentary, though when James will start on the project is unknown at this time.

  • 'Skyfall' Featurette Goes Behind The Opening Sequence

    Skyfall

Anyone familiar with Bond movies know that the pre-credit action sequence is one of the most important elements of the 007 formula. The opener can be short, sweet, and even self-contained, but it has to make an impression.

So after four years away from the big screen, Bond, Daniel Craig, and director Sam Mendes have double the pressure to deliver an action-filled opening with "Skyfall."

We've seen bits and pieces of the seemingly epic chase that opens the films thanks to the theatrical trailer, but a new featurette over at IGN takes a look behind the making of the scene.

Check it out after the jump!

The chase takes Bond all over Istanbul after a mission goes wrong. There are cars, bikes, a train, and Craig looking as stylist as ever as the agent with a license to kill.

"Skyfall" hits theaters on November 9.

  • Dan Radcliffe Is 'The Real Deal' In 'Kill Your Darlings'

MTV News caught up with Jack Huston at the premiere for season three of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire." You may know Huston from his badass role as Richard Harrow, but next year you're going to see him alongside Daniel Radcliffe in the beat poet-murder mystery, "Kill Your Darlings."

And wouldn't you know it? Huston had the nicest things to say about his young costar, Radcliffe.

"I've never seen [anything like] the way he works, such tenacity," Huston said. "He's got a hunger for the craft. It was one of the loveliest experiences."

Huston said that when "Kill Your Darlings" does hit next year, Harry Potter fans may not be prepared.

"I think people are going to be shocked about how good he is," Huston said. "He's really coming into himself. It's very hard getting out of the shadow of something like 'Harry Potter' because... it's as big as it gets in the film world. I think he really wants to be considered the actor he's capable of actually becoming. I'm happy that I got to work with him and actually see him do what he's capable of doing."

  • TIFF Review Roundup: 'Looper' And 'Argo' Score Early Raves

    Looper

We're a few days into one of the biggest Toronto International Film Festival line-ups in recent years, and already opinions on some of this year's most anticipated releases have begun to roll out.

The folks over at Film.com have a few representatives up at TIFF, who have been kind enough to catch some of these titles and let us know what they think.

    "Looper"
    Grade: A-

In an age where filmmakers are more likely to to shrug and suggest you simply embrace mystery, writer-director Rian Johnson ("The Brothers Bloom") draws a line in the sand and says "no." He has ideas – fun ideas – and he's got a story to tell. Fans of rich sci-fi may want to keep a handkerchief on hand lest they find themselves drooling, while those who simply like a fun adventure with great actors in juicy roles ought to have a good ride, too. "Looper" is, no doubt about it, a terrific film. -Jordan Hoffman

    "Argo"
    Grade: A

"Argo" is definitely worth seeing in theaters, maintaining a serious "Spy Game" meets "The Kingdom" vibe of fast-paced drama. It's a film that picks up steam throughout, and it ends like a freight train. Kudos to Ben Affleck, actor and director, for delivering a vital and thrilling political actioner. -Laremy Legel

    "Anna Karenina"
    Grade: C

Not so much for "Anna Karenina," a film that tries twice as hard and feels about four times as long. Though often visually striking, the story never fully takes off, leaving one of the greatest novelized tragedies of the past two centuries entirely bereft of an emotional connection on the big screen. -LL

  • Kristen Stewart Recalls Pressures Of Making 'On The Road'

Adapting any highly regarded piece of literature comes with a lot of pressure, but for the cast and crew of "On the Road," the status of Kerouac's seminal novel was in a category of its own.

For the film's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, two of the stars of "On the Road," Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund, spoke with MTV News' Josh Horowitz about that pressure and how they dealt with it.

    Read more after the jump!

Hedlund said that he felt the director, Walter Salles, had the most riding on the success of the film. "When you're the director of a film like this, a book like this, Kerouac's 'On the Road,' the fact that it couldn't be made for 30, 40 years," he said. "Francis Ford Coppola tried many different routes to overcome the obstacles to complete this route and this journey, it's all on Walter. He had outstanding devotion to the film. He was on this seven year ago, making documentaries about and traveling around, interviewing all of his heroes of road film directors. He's just been so devoted, so passion about it. It's so rare, so wonderful."

Stewart recalled her first days on set and how those were the most stressful of the entire shoot. "Maybe just the start of it, entering the rehearsal period and getting to know everyone and making sure people thought you were worthy of being there," she said.

"It took about two seconds, luckily because Walter is such a genius and brought together the right group of people. The first time I had met Garrett and Sam and walking into boot camp, I was like 'I love it. I totally deserve to be here. I promise. Let me tell you why.' It went away as soon as we started filming. There wasn't a second where I questioned anyone I was there with or why I was there. It was so the right place to be."

Last night's Video Music Awards may have been all about the music for the most part, but "Twilight" fans got a little something for themselves, when a few of the cast members presented the final trailer for "Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

The finale looks like it will be an epic one. As fans know, the ending has been beefed up a bit with some extra vampire-versus-vampire action, and we see plenty of that in this final trailer.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2" hits theaters on November 16.

What was your favorite part of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!
