  • Gina Carano Recalls The 'Bumps And Bruises' Of 'Haywire'

    Gina Carano

When MMA fighter-turned-action star Gina Carano first met with her A-list "Haywire" co-stars — Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and Antonio Banderas — she did so knowing that at some point in the near future, she'd likely have to beat them up.

But according to Carano, that fact never got in the way of their working relationships. "It wasn't about beating each other up," she said. "It was about creating something great, and that's what they do every day on film, so it was nice to be able to share what I do."

Carano spoke with MTV News in the lead up to the release of "Haywire" on Blu-ray this week, and she explained that her approach to fighting on film was not that different from her cage fighting. "I've learned through fighting that you never judge anybody off of what you think you know about them," she said.

Even months after the initial release of "Haywire," the hard blows of Carano's fight with Fassbender stand out as some of the best of the year. For Carano, it was a very intimate experience between her and her co-star. "It was just very intense. The adrenaline's up," she said. "It's one of the best feelings in the world."

Fassbender brought as much to the fight as Carano did, according to the actress. "He's a great guy and a great actor. He's got a really special energy about him and he brings that to whatever he does," she said. "It was the first fight scene that we got to film, so it was that much more special. It just kind of moves through the room in a very sexy way. It's got a really beautiful story to it."

With the health and safety of some of Hollywood's top talent in her hands, Carano was acutely aware of her responsibilities on set. "I was made aware that I was the lead actress, but I would also be the lead stunt woman. Some people have a very big weight on their shoulders to carry because they have to take care of the people who are going to be on film," she said. "You can replace a stunt person, but you can't replace these actors."

It was Carano's experience in the octagon that allowed her to keep everyone safe from her own special talents. "I knew that these actors signed on knowing that Steven Soderbergh is the director and he's going to take care of them. It was easy for me because I'm used to controlling my body in those circumstances," she said. "They were such cool guys, and it was OK if we got bumps and bruises along the way because we were working for something."

What it really came down to when making a fight scene work was respect between Carano and her on-screen opponent. "There were no egos involved. I think on these other action films sometimes, you put a guy against a guy, and it becomes this ego struggle," she said. "With me, it's like, 'I'm going to take care of you, but I'm going to make it look good.' They trusted me. I really feel like they trusted their bodies in my hands. It was a mutual kind of respect."

"Haywire" hits Blu-ray and DVD on May 1.

  • Taylor Kitsch Stands By 'John Carter'

Taylor Kitsch will be battling aliens this summer when "Battleship" hits theaters next month, and that's not his first time fighting enemies from space this year. Of course, "John Carter" didn't exactly light up the box office, but Kitsch is still very proud of his work on the Mars-set science fiction flick.

"My heart was in that film and I'm very proud," he told MTV News during a recent interview at CinemaCon. "I'm standing by it."

The movie was a labor of love for Kitsch and director Andrew Stanton, but it didn't resonate with audiences in the way it was intended. Kitsch clearly still loves the film, and is upset that it didn't do as well as many had hoped.

"It is sh--ty, of course. It is sh--ty, and it happens. Every movie I'm going to do is a risk, and I'm not going to stop taking them," he said. "So it's exciting to have these two come up, and I definitely mourned, had my moment with it, talked to Stants forever about it, and I'm going to work with Stants again. It's not going to stop any of that kind of stuff. So yeah, it is what it is."

When asked if he thinks "John Carter's" failure to succeed in the box office could be attributed to any specific thing, Kitsch played coy.

"To each their own. If someone wants to point a finger, that's okay," he said with a smile. "It truly is a waste of energy to worry about variables out of my control."

You can find out more from Kitsch about "Battleship" during tonight's MTV First.

  • 'Battleship' Brings Brooklyn Decker 'Boob' Envy To Rihanna

Sure, Rihanna and her "Battleship" pals talk a lot about the Peter Berg-directed blockbuster during "MTV First: Battleship" tonight on MTV and MTV.com. But if you need another reason to check it out, aside from gawking at the magnificence that is that cast (which features Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard), we have one for you right here.

In the midst of the interview, MTV News' very own Josh Horowitz pointed out just how lovely and good looking the cast is and in the process, may have started a beautiful people feud. That feud resulted in the always-candid Rihanna's confession that she'd love to have Brooklyn's lady lumps if given the option.

"I envy her boobs," Ri noted during the "First." Well, it seems that it's not just Rihanna who would swap body parts if that power should ever come to be.

Brooklyn shared, "I envy this ass. Are you kidding me?"

While Rihanna played it coy about her famous derriere, Brooklyn insisted she'd love a piece of it. For the record, we think they are both very beautiful ladies. But to find out if scores were settled and if any body parts got swapped, check out "MTV First: Battleship" tonight at 7:56 PM on MTV.

  • Peter Jackson Responds To 'Hobbit' Frame Rate Criticism

    The Hobbit

Attendees of CinemaCon might not have been fans of "The Hobbit" footage presented in 48 frames per second, but Peter Jackson isn't letting that get him down. In fact, he seems to think that people just haven't gotten used to the new film style. Critics in the movie community seemed to find fault in the way the higher frame rate made the flick seem less cinematic and feel like you're on "The Hobbit's" set, but Jackson has come out and said they just need time to adjust.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly and The Hollywood Reporter, Jackson said that viewers should decide for themselves whether they like the format or not. He also argues that 10 minutes of footage doesn't give consumers enough time to judge 48 fps fairly.

"You get used to it reasonably quickly," he said to THR, adding that now when he views traditional 24 fps, "I'm very aware of the strobing, the flicker and the artifacts."

Films are currently shown at 24 fps, but Jackson and James Cameron (another proponent of the doubled frame rate) hope that this new style of filmmaking will make 3D a more immersive and gentle experience. This also means that "The Hobbit" will be shown in six potential formats, since the 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D screenings will all be available in both 24 fps and 48 fps.

"Nobody is going to stop. This technology is going to keep evolving," Jackson told EW. "At first it's unusual because you've never seen a movie like this before. It's literally a new experience, but you know, that doesn't last the entire experience of the film -- not by any stretch, [just] 10 minutes or so. That's a different experience than if you see a fast-cutting montage at a technical presentation."

Jackson has opted not to show the trailer in 48 fps because he doesn't think it's enough time for average moviegoers to get used to the format, so the first time they see it will be in theaters when the movie comes out on December 14. And if they don't like it then? Well, too bad.

"I can't say anything," Jackson acknowledged. "Just like I can't say anything to someone who doesn't like fish. You can't explain why fish tastes great and why they should enjoy it."

He seems to think it's just a matter of adjusting to the new format, and it seems that 48 fps offers a similar experience as LED screens. Jackson found that critics seemed to like new frame rate more as the footage continued screening.

"A couple of the more negative commenters from CinemaCon said that in the Gollum and Bilbo scene [which took place later in the presentation] they didn't mind it and got used to that," he told EW. "That was the same 48 frames the rest of the reel was. I just wonder if it they were getting into the dialogue, the characters and the story. That's what happens in the movie. You settle into it."

Are you willing to give 48 fps a try? Let us know in the comments section below or on Twitter!

  • Chloe Moretz Making Her Own Dress For 'Carrie' Remake

Between her roles in "Let Me In," "The Eye" and the upcoming "Carrie" remake, Chloe Moretz could become our new little mistress of horror.

MTV News caught up with the young actress at CinemaCon recently where she said that this is going to be the most method role she's ever delved into. Moretz said that one of the ways she's going to try to delve into the character of Carrie is to go all Scarlett O'Hara on this flick and make her own dress -- likely for the infamous prom scene.

"I might be making my own dress," Moretz said. "One of my ideas for the character was to actually go and make my own dress, and I'm actually using my friend's old drapes and making my own dress, and I'm going to sew it and everything, and I'm actually going to go out and wear it for a few weeks. I'm sure you guys are going to get some great, lovely photos of me walking down the street in some weird A-line thing, but it will be good. It will put me in there."

The 1976 Brian De Palma film is one of the most iconic horror movies of all time, but Moretz seems to have more than enough faith in "Boys Don't Cry" director Kimberly Pierce reworking such seminal material. It turns out that this flick will go back to Stephen King's original novel while still taking notes from De Palma's first go at the story.

"De Palma's movie is absolutely amazing. Kim is actually really good friends with De Palma, and they're talking about the movie and they're good friends, so we're taking a lot of his notes," Moretz said. "But what we're actually doing is we're taking the book and we're breaking the book down and we're putting a lot of elements of the book into our story, so it's more of like a 'Black Swan' version of it. So you really see the mythology of the character and you really see everything going on with Carrie. It's darker."

Are you looking forward to this new version of "Carrie"? Do you think Moretz will make a good leading lady? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

  • Leonard Nimoy: 'We're Talking' About Returning For 'Star Trek 2'

Leonard NimoyLeonard Nimoy has lived long and prospered as Spock for many years, though his final appearance alongside the good men and women of Starfleet seemingly occurred in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot some years ago.

Not so fast, it turns out. Nimoy spoke with CNN last week during the launch of the space shuttle Enterprise in New York, and revealed that his days in space aren't necessarily over.

"We're talking, we're talking," the "retired" actor told the news outlet when asked if he'd ever appear in another "Star Trek" movie.

Adding further fuel to the return of Nimoy's Spock in "Star Trek 2" is a report from Ain't It Cool News' Merrick, who states: "I've also received some compelling independent confirmation that Nimoy is 'absolutely' in the new film."

Ever since the science fiction icon announced his retirement from acting in April 2010, the man's been surprisingly busy. He's starred in several episodes of "Fringe" (and judging by events in recent episodes, he might even have a future on the Fox series' upcoming fifth and final season), he provided the voice of Sentinel Prime in "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," and more. So to say that Nimoy is retired now isn't exactly accurate — and hearing that he's up for more "Star Trek" shenanigans definitely falls within the realm of possibility. We'll keep you posted as we hear more.

Do you want Leonard Nimoy to return for more "Star Trek" action? Tell us in the comments section or let us know on Twitter!
