  • 'Bridget Jones 3' Script In The Works, Hugh Grant Confirms

Leading man tells MTV News he expects 'more fisticuffs' with Colin Firth.

The last time anyone heard about the third film in the "Bridget Jones" franchise, the script was still being reworked to suit lead actors Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. But fans have been getting antsy about the long-rumored sequel, with some wondering if the next chapter in bumbling Bridget's story will ever be told.

When MTV News caught up with Grant in New York City on Friday (April 20), he explained that the British love triangle will return to the big screen ... eventually. However, script problems continue to delay production.

"I've seen some scripts," Grant said. "They haven't quite hit the nail yet, but they will. They're working on it."

Since the script is still in the writing stages, now might be the time to request that Bridget's two leading men, Daniel Cleaver and Mark Darcy, get into one of their infamous brawls, battling it out for Bridget's heart.

"Yes, our public demands some more fisticuffs!" Grant exclaimed.

"Bridget Jones 3" was first announced in August 2011. At one point, "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig was attached to direct the film, but he exited last October. In November, Firth explained that "Full Monty" director Peter Cattaneo was in talks to take the helm.

In 2001, "Bridget Jones's Diary" became an international smash, making a whopping $282 million at the box office. Three years later, the 2004 sequel "Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason" saw slightly less success Stateside but raked in a whopping $262 million. Now, eight years after the last flick, the third film would potentially follow Bridget as she attempts to tackle motherhood in her 40s. Fans should probably expect lots of trademark Bridget Jones antics to ensue.

  • Zac Efron Reveals Best Music For Setting The Mood

'Phil Collins,' 'Lucky One' star deadpans to MTV News.

In a discussion of the finer aspects of the recently released romantic drama "The Lucky One" with stars Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, one of the most entertaining subjects to come up revolved around prolific romance author Nicholas Sparks, author of the novel upon which the film is based. Specifically, we wondered whether Efron and Schilling had ever experienced any Sparks-like fantasy romance scenarios in real life.

"I'm sure I've said some of those lines," Efron admitted to MTV News. "They're probably worse — not as good as the ones [Sparks has] written, but they were excellent in the moment."

"I'm sure they were great," Schilling offered. "I'm sure they worked in the moment."

"I feel like they were good," Efron said with a smile.

"It's about the right moment," Schilling added, referring to the fact that there's a perfect time and place for romantic gestures. "There have been a few sweeping gestures [in my life] but what means the most to me are the little things from the heart. There have been a few notes and well-timed flowers that mean more than anything else."

"Every once in a while when you look into each other's eyes and that music starts playing, I love that," Efron joked, which prompted us to ask a follow-up question about which song you should play when trying to set the mood.

"That's a good question. What would be your song that you would play?" Schilling asked Efron. "I have no answer."

"Phil Collins," Efron deadpanned, which sent his co-star into a fit of giggles.

"That's great!" she said, laughing. "That's a good blanket artist. It's a great answer."

    "I think so," Efron said.

We can just picture it now, Efron and a very lucky lady about to lock lips with Collins' classics "In the Air Tonight" or "Against All Odds" playing in the background.

  • Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis Are 'Deluded Losers' In 'The Campaign'

Director Jay Roach tells MTV News the comedy takes win-at-all-costs politics to an 'absurd degree.'
    By Kevin P. Sullivan

    Photo: Warner Bros

For the past few years, Jay Roach, the director of the "Austin Powers" series, has alternated between making comedies and true-life political films for HBO. His latest effort, "The Campaign," combines those two very different genres.

In "The Campaign," which hits theaters on August 10 Will Ferrell plays a popular incumbent North Carolina congressman who suffers a scandal and faces a political opponent for the first time in year, played by Zach Galifianakis.

We spoke with Roach for our Summer Movie Preview and learned just how ridiculous politics can be and what it's like to have Ferrell and Galifianakis on set together.

MTV: You've been switching between political films and comedies recently. What's it like to combine the two?

Jay Roach: That's been an enjoyable part of this one. I've been working on some more serious films at HBO, but Will and Zach and Adam McKay came up with this idea and asked me to get involved about two guys running against each other for a congressional seat and mentioned that it would mostly be about how the win-at-all-costs approach to politics these days could be taken to an absurd degree. It might be funny. I pictured those two guys, Zach and Will. I've worked with both of them briefly on other films, and the idea of those two going up against each other in a super, super negative campaigning situation made me laugh. It would be a chance to delve back into some of the political issues but in a very comedic format.

MTV: Do you find politics funny?

Roach: It's funny, but it's painful. It's painful that it does get absurd. There's definitely humor, but when you're doing it about real-life situations, it makes me anxious. It's uncomfortable. I spent a fair amount of time to put people back into uncomfortable situations that they, in a certain way, wish to avoid because they already happened. I'm trying not to let them forget about them. It's a painful thing to ask the audience to go through. It's a little therapeutic in a different way to laugh through it, as opposed to cry through, because I found myself crying through the other stories. This one, I'm laughing.

MTV: Did doing those political films before help you make this political comedy?

Roach: It did help that I had a little bit of a background and had done a little bit of research. I'm still very naïve about politics. Through the research for those films, I was able to familiarize myself with how campaigns work, especially how spin doctors work, how campaign consultants work. Jason Sudeikis and Dylan McDermott play the respective spit doctors for Will Ferrell's and Zach Galifianakis' characters. Seeing how those dynamics work does at least create a plausible version of that that could be funny.

MTV: How far removed from reality are the politics of "The Campaign"?

Roach: In a certain way, you want to say it's far removed, but if the current campaign is any indication, it's not that far. While we were shooting, we would sometimes come to the set having seen a debate the night before and "Oh my God, reality is trumping us. We better step it up." I do think politics have become kind of a circus anyway. We were just a contrived circus, as opposed to the real one. Because it's Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, and they are determined to smear each other to destruction, we use that premise some of the campaign ads and campaign stunts pretty far.

MTV: What was it like having two great comedians in the leads?

Roach: They're incredible. I had a great time with both of them. Each is an excellent improviser and a great designer of character. When I heard they might want to work together, I don't know where that goes wrong. Those two guys, who are both very, very good at playing somewhat deluded losers, going against each other with the conviction that they both deserve to be winners, that to me always sounds fun. They compensate for any of their deficiencies by just turning up the conviction that they are super capable. In the case of story, they turn up their antagonism toward each other. In some of the debate scenes, we just let them run and kind of go at each other, using their own improv skills and fantastic stuff came out of it.

MTV: Were they as funny off-camera?

Roach: I would also do stuff off-camera with them. In a debate, I had not decided who the background actors should be cheering for, usually you predetermine that. I just said to the actors off-camera, "Whoever they like best, that's who they're going to cheer for." They started wooing the crowd between takes, offering them bribes and special drinks if they would be on their side. Zach started sharing his little portable fan that he would use to cool off in the New Orleans heat. Will started passing out trays of water. It was hilarious watching them. Then they turned on each other and started insulting each other to try disparage the other and turn their audiences away from them. It was just a funny trick. They riffed so much that I just kept doing it.

  • Olivia Munn A 'Voyeur' On The 'Magic Mike' Set

Munn especially loved co-star Matt Bomer's bum: 'I just want to make wishes on it, it's so beautiful.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino

There's so much man meat in the "Magic Mike" trailer that it's easy to forget that there are actual ladies in the June film.

Sure, "Mike" stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer and Joe Manganiello — we know, you need a second to catch your breath — but the Steven Soderbergh-directed flick also boasts some talented ladies, including Olivia Munn.

When MTV News caught up with the actress — who was being honored by Us Weekly as a "sexy tomboy" at the mag's Hot Hollywood event — she opened up about being around all those guys and loving each and every minute of it.

"I think on set, with all these guys, I'm not a sexy tomboy; I'm not a tomboy; I'm not anything," she said. "I'm just a voyeur, watching them."

She then recalled hitting the set long before her call time just to gawk at the studs. "I'm on set when I'm not even working for, like, four hours, but I heard they're dancing and they're going to be naked, so I'm gonna be here early watching. So that's what I am on set: more the voyeur watching."

As for all the smooth moves, she shared that the film's star — Magic Mike himself, Channing Tatum — might be the smoothest. "He's truly, truly talented, and he's so fun to watch, and it's so sexy as well," she said. "And then the person I was really impressed with was Matt Bomer, 'cause I didn't know he could dance. He's got this juicy butt. Like, I just want to make wishes on it, it's so beautiful."

  • Tim Burton's 'Dark Shadows': Just How Dark Is It?

Early chatter indicates a film in the vein of 'Sleepy Hollow' with both farcical and 'full-bodied horror' elements.
    By John Mitchell

Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in "Dark Shadows"
    Photo: Warner Bros.

The death of actor Jonathan Frid, the original Barnabas Collins, makes this a sad week in the "Dark Shadows"-verse. The 87-year-old, classically trained actor passed away at a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, on April 13 after a fall at his home. Frid cameos in Tim Burton's big-screen adaptation of the '60s soap opera, which hits theaters on May 11. It will be his final screen appearance.

"Jonathan Frid was the reason I used to run home from school to watch 'Dark Shadows,' " the film's star, Johnny Depp, told the LA Times in an e-mail from the Arizona set of "The Lone Ranger." "His elegance and grace was an inspiration then and will continue to remain one forever more. When I had the honor to finally meet him ... [he] generously passed the torch of Barnabas."

We hope Frid, who maintained a long, loving and appreciative relationship with "Shadows" fans, had a chance to see at least a rough cut of the anticipated flick. Some early reviews trickling out indicate it is quite different from what the trailers, TV commercials and print advertisements would have us think.

Two weeks back, after hearing Burton regular Danny Elfman's menacing score and noting that it in no way lined up with the gonzo comedy the trailer seemed to be selling, we wondered if maybe the clip was cut to appeal to the broadest possible audience without much regard for the tone of the film itself. After all, a Gothic horror-comedy with a deep and dramatic back story is a much harder sell than a broad and cartoonish farce about an 18th Century vamp trying to get used to the electronic contraptions, female doctors and cars of the 1970s.

If the early buzz is any indication, we were right.

In a series of tweets (which have since been pulled down; lucky for us others cleverly snapped them up), Entertainment Weekly senior writer Anthony Breznican, who has seen the movie, shared his thoughts and they reveal a more complex and ambitious film that is alternately dark and absurd (in what sounds like a great way).

"I've seen final cut of 'Dark Shadows.' Tone similar to Burton and Depp's 'Sleepy Hollow' — lots of humor, but with menacing, atmospheric edge," Breznican wrote. "In 'Dark Shadows,' there's an absurdist bent to the monster element. The creatures of the night are adrift in the self-obsessed world of 1970s ... In typical Burton fashion, humans are scarier than the fiends. If u want 'Interview w the Vampire,' that movie exists. This is a more wry take."

Most telling though, Breznican wrote, "If you dig screenwriter [Seth Grahame-Smith's] style w Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter then 'Dark Shadows' will be to your liking, too."

Grahame-Smith is a master of mixing comedy and drama with thrills and chills, as his books "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" display. It's a fact seconded by an anonymous source from Hollywood Elsewhere, who's also seen the film. "While it has 'Beetlejuice' elements, this is not a broad comedy. It's a gothic romance with strong farcical elements, but the trailer makes it seem like 'Love at First Bite' and it definitely is not," Hollywood Elsewhere wrote.

"The anachronism-based humor does work quite well. The film is funny, but it also has full-bodied horror elements," the tipster continued. "In short, there's more of the Burton 'Sweeney Todd' than the trailer implies. This is not Burton's 'Addams Family,' but a successful amalgamation of his comedic and gothic horror styles."

The tipster also adds that three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer is a standout, calling her performances as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard "her strongest work in years." So there you have it. Fans of the show can breathe a sigh of relief, because it's sounding more and more like justice has been done to their beloved cult soap opera. Burton maniacs can go back to being excited for his return to the darker, more Gothic terrain where he's done his best and most interesting work. My "The Fabulous Baker Boys,""Dangerous Liaisons," "The Age of Innocence," "One Fine Day," "White Oleander" and "Stardust" all-day Saturday marathon can proceed as scheduled. And, of course, the talented Jonathan Frid's final screen appearance will be a fitting and appropriate return to the story he seemed to love so much.

Fans of the show, does buzz that the film has a darker side than we're seeing in the ads make you feel any better? Let us know in the comments below and tweet me at @JohnMitchell83 with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns! comments!

  • Taylor Swift To Play Joni Mitchell?

Country superstar is linked to the role in the film adaptation of Sheila Weller's book 'Girls Like Us.'
    By Fallon Prinzivalli

    Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic

It turns out voicing Audrey in "The Lorax" and playing a shallow, high school cheerleader in "Valentine's Day" were just the opening roles in Taylor Swift's budding acting career. The Grammy-winning artist is linked to the role of Joni Mitchell in the film adaptation of Sheila Weller's book "Girls Like Us," Variety reports.

The biography maps the lives of three of the most influential female musicians in America: Carole King, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell. In an attempt to capture the life of women in the 1970s, Weller tells these artists' three unique stories. King is the daughter of a middle-class New York family, living in one of the city's outer boroughs. Simon is the product of Manhattan's intellectual elite. Mitchell's grandparents were Canadian farmers.

When MTV News spoke to Swift in March, she told us acting has always "fascinated" her. The role of Mitchell sounds like a part she would want to take on.

"I love the idea that you can tell a story in that way," the singer gushed. "I've been reading scripts for about five years. In my free time, that's all I do is read scripts."

But she isn't in a rush to choose just any role. "I just want to make decisions really carefully. I think, with movies, it's really important that you have to love something so much that you cannot think about anything else," she continued. "If you're going to become someone else, that's a huge deal. That's a huge commitment, and I would want to have the time and the ability and the love for something and the love for a character to where I could really make that commitment to it."

Swift would certainly have some of the background knowledge it takes to play Mitchell, being a musician herself. While Sony Pictures has not made Swift an official offer, other actresses have already auditioned — including Alison Pill ("Midnight in Paris") — for the role of King. Variety also reported that Katie Jacobs, executive producer of "House," is directing the script penned by John Sayles, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura is set to produce. The biopic is still waiting to be green-lit, but the tentative start of production is later this year.

  • 'That's My Boy' A 'Throwback' To Early Adam Sandler

'Adam Sandler has always been one of my comedy idols, so to get to work with him was really fun,' Will Forte tells MTV News.
    By Kara Warner

    Photo: Sony Pictures

No matter what you thought about Adam Sandler's last few zany comedies, there are more than a few reasons to be excited about his next release, "That's My Boy."

First, it's Sandler's first-ever R-rated comedy. Second, it features a cast of former and current "SNL" players like Andy Samberg and Will Forte, as well as James Caan and Vanilla Ice. And third, the outrageous plot revolves around a deadbeat father (Sandler) who attempts to reconnect with his long-lost son (Samberg) on the week of his wedding.

MTV News recently caught up with funnyman Forte to find out all about the on-set antics, Sandler's genius abilities in the art of swearing, how awesome Vanilla Ice is in the film and if we'll ever see a "MacGruber" sequel.

MTV News: In looking at the cast and concept of this film, it seems as though you probably had a lot of fun on set.

Will Forte: It was a ton of fun. I've always watched Sandler movies and thought, "Oh my God, that looks like it would be so much fun." They're always in Hawaii or some glamorous setting, and it really is as much fun as you would think it would be. It was like going to summer camp for this. Everyone was so cool. He's such a loyal and good person. He always works with the same people on the crew, so it's a real family-like atmosphere.

MTV: How does your character fit into the mix?

Forte: I play this guy named Bill, and he is Andy's best man. I don't really know Andy that well, so you find out later when Adam comes to find Andy on his wedding weekend, I give up my best-man duties to Adam. It's definitely not a straight man; he's kind of a weirdo. It's a fun character. There's a mix of different types of characters in there. I'm one of the ones who gets to have a lot of fun and be an idiot.

MTV: How does the R rating enhance the fun factor?

Forte: It's a completely different situation. There is so much going on in this movie. It's a really fun movie. Adam Sandler has always been one of my comedy idols, so to get to work with him was really fun, and to add into that the R-rated part of this movie, it was so fun. There are very few people who can swear with the style and enunciation of Adam. He just hits them just right. It was so much fun. This movie feels like a throwback to some of the earlier Sandler movies, with the addition of swearing. I cannot tell you how fun this experience was. I feel like when you watch the movie, you can tell how much fun we had.

MTV: How was it working with Vanilla Ice?

Forte: I got to hang out with Vanilla Ice quite a bit. It was awesome. He is so different than I thought he would be. He's this very sweet and loving person, just kind of normal for Vanilla Ice, if that makes sense. He's this wonderful, warm person, but still the Vanilla Ice you want to see. He doesn't disappoint you in not being Vanilla Ice-y enough. He's an awesome guy.

MTV: You have a lot of things on your plate in addition to this movie, like "Rock of Ages," the comedy pilot "Rebounding." What are the odds we'll ever see a "MacGruber" sequel?

Forte: We would love to do a "MacGruber" sequel! I don't know if anyone with any money would love us to do a "MacGruber" sequel, but we talk about it all the time, and we might even — to just get it out of our heads — we might sit down and write a second one. If we could somehow talk somebody into putting some money up for it [that would be great]. We're so proud of that movie and had so much fun doing it. There is no serious talk about making a "MacGruber" sequel, but there's some non-serious talk about it. A couple of the people who were a part of it sit around and get drunk and talk about it; that's the level of talk.

"That's My Boy" opens everywhere June 15.

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "The Avengers," Robert Pattinson's "Bel Ami," Kristen Stewart's "Snow White," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and more!

  • 'The Lucky One': The Reviews Are In!

Critics find Zac Efron film to be typical Nicholas Sparks fare.
    By Fallon Prinzivalli

Zac Efron in "The Lucky One"
    Photo: Warner Bros.

In the film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel "The Lucky One," Zac Efron plays Logan, a Marine who returns from Iraq in search of the woman he believes was his good luck charm overseas. He finds her (Beth, played by Taylor Schilling) and learns she runs a dog kennel with her son Ben and grandmother Ellie. Despite Beth's reservations, Ellie hires Logan to help with the work around the kennel, and Ellie ends up warming to the soldier.

Overall, critics are not impressed with the Scott Hicks-directed movie, but their reviews are mixed. Some claim that the acting is bland and the storyline is the typical "boy-meets-girl" Sparks experience, while others believe the romance is "well-constructed" given the source material. Either way, the film is sure to appeal to the author's fans and should fare well with romance lovers at this weekend's box office.

    The Story
"The Sparks-styled romance has almost become its own movie genre — predictable, pure of heart, sentimental and never straying from the boy-meets-girl basics, or the surface, for that matter — and in that 'The Lucky One' delivers." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

    The Romance
"The central love story is well-constructed for what it is; it offers the requisite amount of fantasy with just a miniscule dollop of realism." — James Berardinelli, Reelviews

"Their love scenes, like every other element of Hicks' film, are lighted in a way that gives everything an impossibly warm, romantic glow. You can roll your eyes, or you can give in." — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

    Zac Efron
"Efron does fill out the hunky-guy uniform nicely. He's no longer the scrawny teen from 'High School Musical.' But despite his promise in smaller movies like 'Me and Orson Welles,' here he's all flat affect, taking bottled-up angst to an extreme where you never actually see it. He's perfectly likable but never riveting, dropping the ball on the chance to portray the complicated psychology of a war veteran. Apart from one early scene in which he flinches at a video-game shooting, you never have the sense he's dealing with combat repercussions." — Sara Stewart, New York Post

    The Final Word
"Part of the experience of a Nicholas Sparks movie is encountering revelations and reversals in the plot that challenge your sense of the preposterous. That's how destiny works: unlikely incidents pile up [and] good intentions go awry ... If realism is what you're after, you'll do better at 'The Three Stooges.' 'The Lucky One' is where you will find death, redemption and kisses in the rain." — A. O. Scott, New York Times

  • 'Catching Fire': Why Hiring Francis Lawrence Makes Sense

We examine the director's qualifications for the second installment in the 'Hunger Games' series.
    By Kevin P. Sullivan

Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games"
    Photo: Lionsgate

On Thursday night, Lionsgate officially offered "Catching Fire" to director Francis Lawrence. The development was widely considered the next letdown in a series of disappointments for fans, who felt Gary Ross' departure was a premature one. But based on what we know about "Catching Fire" and what Lionsgate was reportedly looking for in a replacement, Lawrence was by far the most likely choice.

Here is why Francis Lawrence makes complete sense as the director for "Catching Fire":

    He Can Do Action
One of the major complaints about Ross' direction of "The Hunger Games" was that he lacked experience shooting action sequences and it showed. If Lionsgate had to find a new director for the series' second entry, choosing one who has more experience with higher-intensity scenes does makes sense. Though Lawrence's name does not come with the prestige of the other directors on the shortlist, he has the most experience of any of them with directing a big-budget action film.

    He's Relatively Inexpensive
Early rumors of Ross' exit had pegged money as the main stumbling block when trying to recruit the director for the second film. We know that Ross made most of his money from "The Hunger Games" on the back end, taking a much lower fee upfront. Lionsgate was reportedly looking to not spend a ton of money on the director for "Catching Fire," and the up-and-coming directors filling out the shortlist more or less confirms that. What makes Lawrence different is that he has the mainstream success that the other independent film directors do not, but he's probably just as willing to work for Lionsgate's lowered fees.

    He Knows the Tone
Lawrence's first two films take place in worlds based largely in a reality not far from our own, but ones that add in fantastical elements. In "I Am Legend," Will Smith's character lives in (near) solitude in a post-zombie-vampire outbreak Manhattan, where he hunts the wild animals that now populate the city. Lawrence has established he can make a film set in a world vaguely resembling our own, so it's not hard to imagine Lawrence being able to make the leap to Panem.

    He's Done Romance
Granted, it wasn't great romance, but it counts. "Water for Elephants" was also based on a best-selling novel and could come in handy in dealing with the amped-up love triangle among Katniss, Peeta and Gale.

    Bennett Miller Wasn't Available
The Playlist originally reported that the race for the director's position came down to two directors, Lawrence and Bennett Miller. The "Moneyball" director was clearly the more distinguished of the two, but he had spent the last few years developing "Foxcatcher," a true-life story about the heir to the DuPont fortune who murdered an Olympic wrestler. In the past few months, Miller has seen "Foxcatcher" finally come together, adding Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and, just recently, Mark Ruffalo to the cast. If Miller would have signed on to direct "Catching Fire," he would have had to further delay "Foxcatcher" just after getting development off the ground.

  • 'Think Like A Man:' The Reviews Are In!

Critics agree the cliché and 'disposable' plot is strengthened by its ensemble cast.
    By Fallon Prinzivalli

Meagan Good and Romany Malco in "Think Like a Man"
    Photo: Screen Gems Productions

The story line for "Think Like a Man" is nothing groundbreaking. Every rom-com touches on men wanting sex and women wanting a man to sweep them off their feet — with both unsatisfied until everything is tied into a neat bow in the last five minutes.

Based on the Steve Harvey book "Act like a Lady, Think like a Man," the film follows a group of men who realize their relationships are being infiltrated by Harvey's self-help book. The women are highlighting away at the pages and using every tactic to get what they want out of their affairs. And while many critics claim the movie looks more like an infomercial, what saves the film is the ensemble cast of attractive, talented actors — Michael Ealy, Meagan Good, Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson and Regina Hall, to name a few — who deliver mild lines with wit and perfectly hit the punch lines of every joke.

It remains to be seen whether "Think like a Man" will knock "The Hunger Games" off its box-office throne this weekend, but as the reviews pour in, it's looking promising.

    The Story
" 'Think Like a Man' is a romantic ensemble comedy — an excessively populated and chatty two-hour one — spun from comedian and syndicated radio host Steve Harvey's 2009 self-help relationship bestseller 'Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man'...The fact that the movie adaptation uses just the latter half of Harvey's book title is your first clue to its slant. It centers around a fraternity of six friends — each designated in the intro as a particular 'type' (as per Harvey's book) — who regularly meet to play basketball, drink and talk about women. Four of them discover that the women they are involved with (who are also 'types') are applying Harvey's wisdom to the relationship dynamic, so the men study up and turn the game to the home-team advantage for what amounts to a temporary fix." — Jennie Punter, The Globe and Mail

    The Ensemble Cast
"Forget hackneyed clichés about Players and Dreamers and the scheming women who seek to domesticate them. Focus on the pleasures of watching a group of gifted actors spar and seduce each other with genuine warmth, and 'Think Like a Man' just might go straight to your head." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

"Every primary cast member is appealing, elevating the disposable plot — men and women are in constant battle, yawn — into a funny, sexy take on contemporary dating. Middling lines are delivered with sharp sass; tired stereotypes are ... well, still tired, actually (women manipulate and nag, men lie and evade). But at least the actors offer gentle twists that take away some of the sting." — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

    The Laughs
" 'Think Like a Man' is occasionally funny, though its dirty riffs — most provided by Kevin Hart as the Happily Divorced Guy — are as formulaic as its earnest parts. The movie isn't liable to surprise you. Nor will it bore or offend you, even if you find Mr. Harvey's shtick more old-school sexist than old-school courtly." — Rachel Saltz, The New York Times

    The Final Word
"These 30-something folks, comfortable in their circumstances and their skins, are allowed to be smart of heart if baffled by the 21st-century courtship game. There's nothing profound going on here; the truisms don't blossom into life-enriching truths. It's more like the person you meet at a bar who, on second glance, is surprisingly attractive. Call 'Think Like a Man' a perfectly satisfactory one-night stand at the movies." — Richard Corliss, TIME

  • 'Magic Mike': Male Stripper Weighs In On Channing Tatum's Moves

New York dancer gives MTV News his professional opinion on how authentic the 'Magic Mike' trailer is.
    By Jocelyn Vena

Bachelorette parties, beefy dudes and dollar bills — oh my! It must mean that the "Magic Mike" trailer dropped.

And, yes, the trailer is filled with lots of Channing Tatum goodness — read goodness as: he's shirtless, a lot — as well as cameos from fellow hunks Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer.

The trailer follows the story of Tatum's character, Magic Mike, as he tries to balance his life as a stripper with a budding romance and his dreams of designing furniture. It seems that the Steven Soderbergh-directed flick, which opens in June, will have lots of heart and lots of laughs.

Now, after watching the trailer several (hundred) times, MTV News decided to track down a real-life male stripper to rate just how authentic it really is. Here's what we learned.

    The Bachelorette Party
"The bachelorette party, the whole thing is totally legit," New York-based dancer Steve Stanulis, who goes by the stage name Steve Savage, told MTV News about the trailer's opening scene. "I mean, with the guys coming in as cops and the girls, like, getting all nervous. So, that's pretty authentic. It looks pretty good."

    The Money
"The whole thing with the singles? The funny thing is when I used to go to the bank, they'd be like 'Oh, my god. Why do you have $500 in singles?' " Savage, who runs Savage Men and helped create "Stripped, The Play," recalled of hitting the bank after a night of dancing like Magic Mike. "And that would be like the ongoing joke."

    The Dancing
"The show looks pretty good, the guys dancing and the whole shtick with each guy coming out with a different routine," he said of several teased strip-club scenes that feature McConaughey and Tatum getting their shirtless grooves on. "They're a little overly elaborate, with all the smoke and spinning, but again that's not something you would really see. I mean we're not going to see Fosse. I mean, they did a great job. All the guys look great as well. They're totally believable as dancers."

    The Relationships
"The whole rigmarole, as far as being in a relationship and being a stripper, 95 percent of the comments of the girlfriends or the significant others give are like, 'When are you gonna give this up? When are you gonna get a real job?' or what have you," he said of Tatum's onscreen love interest, Paige, played by Cody Horn. "So, they really captured that as well, which is really funny."

    The Ambition
"I also like the fact that he's talking about being an entrepreneur because all these guys, well most of these guys, are not just strippers, they're doing other things," he explained of Tatum's dream to make furniture for a living.

    The Bottom Line
So, will Savage see the flick? "I would definitely go see it," he said. "I would def recommend it. It looks good."

  • Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch Are 'Savages' In Oliver Stone's Latest

'She is beautiful and she is sexy. She is hot,' legendary filmmaker says of Lively's performance in his summer flick, out July 6.
    By Josh Horowitz

    Photo: Universal Pictures

When Oliver Stone releases a film, you'd better sit up and take notice. Whether he's tackling the Vietnam War (as he did in a trilogy of films: "Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Heaven & Earth"), presidential scandals (another trilogy: "JFK," "Nixon" and "W.") or pulpy genre violence ("Natural Born Killers," "U-Turn"), you can be sure he'll give an audience member something to chew on. So when Stone signs on to direct some of the hottest young actors in Hollywood (Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson) in a tale of sex, drugs and violence, yeah, we're interested.

MTV News caught up with Stone to talk about his first legitimate summer release, "Savages" (set for a July 6 release), his distaste for most summer popcorn films and his upcoming gargantuan take on nothing less than the history of the United States.

MTV: The release date of "Savages" was shifted quite a bit. It's now being released in the middle of a very competitive summer. Were you happy with that decision?

Oliver Stone: I've never done a summer movie, believe it or not. Except for "Natural Born Killers," but that was August, late summer. This is my first time out there in the big leagues. So I'm excited in a way.

MTV: Do you think "Savages" will play well for that younger summer audience?

Stone: I think it plays well. I don't know that it would play completely to the "Hunger Games" crowd because we have a different kind of sexuality and the take on violence is real for us. It's fun and exciting. It's a wild ride. You don't know what's going to happen. I think the unpredictability is what makes it work.

MTV: Can you give me a sense of the relationship at the heart of the story between the characters played by Blake, Taylor and Aaron.

Stone: They are all friends and they believe in free love, and they happen to be growing some grass. One of them [Johnson] is doing good around the world. The other one [Kitsch] is an Afghanistan and Iraq veteran who's his best buddy from school; they have a partnership. The girl [Lively] is from Laguna. They met on the beach, basically.

MTV: It sounds like just about every hot young actor was in the running for these roles.

Stone: I met with every pot dealer I could. [Laughs] For the girl, I had to meet a few of the younger newcomers because I did not know who they were. I saw [Blake's] work and I was very impressed with "[The Private Live of] Pippa Lee." And she was very strong in "The Town." I think people that know her from "Gossip Girl" will be surprised. She is beautiful and she is sexy. She is hot. That's what a lot of fans would say about her.

MTV: Has "Savages" received a rating yet?

Stone: We got a hard R. It's an intense movie but it's a different style than "Natural Born Killers." It has a lush look. It has some of that sun-drenched romanticism that I like. It's not just action, it is also romantic.

MTV: "Savages" will be surrounded by some big summer blockbusters. You've managed to avoid tentpole movies, though you did almost direct a "Mission: Impossible" at one point.

Stone: Well, we tried to make a "Mission" at that time, which was ahead of its time in terms of the story. I looked at it as a vehicle that was supersmart. [But] they could never pick a script. With "Mission: Impossible," you have to hit these beats all the time.

MTV: It sounds like it's not a regret for you.

Stone: It's all steroids now. I mean "Iron Man 2" is unwatchable, as is "Transformers 2." It's not my kind of moviemaking. "Savages" is a different kind of movie. It's realistic and at the same time it has a bit of that summer pop feel.

MTV: What's the status of your TV series, "The Untold History of the United States"?

Stone: That one's a bitch. It's a bitch in my butt.

MTV: It will begin airing on Showtime in November?

Stone: Yeah, we will make that for sure, but there are so many factors and fact checking. It's a lot of work. It's 21 hours and each hour has to work like a movie. I'm dealing with an important issue to me. That's a legacy for me. Something that matters. It may not matter to most people, but it does matter to me. This is a perception of our time that is completely different from what we're hearing in magazines and in our newspapers. We deal with all types of things, such as the nature of the atomic bomb, why was it used, why it should not have been used. It's all kinds of stuff. Reagan's legacy, our national security state, we go after all of it.

    MTV: Do you narrate it?

Stone: Yes, I narrate it as well.

Check out Oliver Stone's "Savages" in theaters July 6, and "The Untold History of the United States" on Showtime in November.

  • Top 10 Must-See Summer Movies Of 2012

'Amazing Spider-Man,' 'Brave' and 'Bourne Legacy' make our can't-miss list.
    By Kevin P. Sullivan

As we wrap up our Summer Movie Preview Week, it feels like the best time to take a look at the big picture and see what movies we are dying to watch.

With so many films coming out this summer, we wanted to share with you our list of what's going to be worth your time (and your money) during the upcoming season.

These are our top 10 most anticipated summer movies:

    "The Amazing Spider-Man"
Marc Webb's reboot of this superhero series earns a spot solely for the character and talent involved. The director made a name for himself with "(500) Days of Summer," and the two leads, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, are among some of the hottest young actors in Hollywood. Though it may seem too soon for a new series, you can't deny that the concept isn't appealing.

    "Marvel's The Avengers"
After sitting through five lead-up movies, "The Avengers" better be worth a spot on our most anticipated list. By all accounts (i.e. those lucky enough to have seen it already), director Joss Whedon has pulled off the seemingly impossible by bringing together Earth's mightiest heroes in a film that not only works, but surpasses the previous films in many ways. Here's hoping that Marvel's crazy/brilliant plan actually pays off.

    "Bourne Legacy"
Director Tony Gilroy, speaking to MTV News as part of our Summer Movie Preview Week, explained that this is not the same old "Jason Bourne Show." According to Gilroy, Jeremy Renner's character has the "opposite of amnesia" and has no confusion about what he's doing for the government. The concept of a less sympathetic take on the formula was exactly what we needed to know that "Bourne" is at least worth one more go.

    "Brave"
Pixar's exploration of Scottish mythology has all the hallmarks of the animation studio. There are beautiful visuals, an unlikely but strong protagonist and the same vibrancy and sense of humor that have made so many of their films modern classics.

    "The Dark Knight Rises"
The last time Christopher Nolan made a Batman film, it had the biggest weekend of all time, grossed over $1 billion worldwide and earned Heath Ledger an Academy Award. For the director's final act, he promises to bring an end to his realistic version of the Batman legend. With so much of the world invested to see how it all turns out, "The Dark Knight Rises" is a guaranteed success. Will Batman make it out alive? There's only one way to find out.

    "Lawless"
Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf star in this true-life, Prohibition-era drama about a family of bootleggers in Virginia. "Lawless" touts a brilliant supporting cast, including Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska. Plus, with director John Hillcoat ("The Proposition," "The Road"), we're almost guaranteed a beautiful-looking crime drama that doesn't shy away from violence.

    "Moonrise Kingdom"
"Moonrise Kingdom" is Wes Anderson at his most Wes Anderson. The director of visually stunning, quirky comedies like "Rushmore" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" is back with this film about young lovebirds who escape the confines of their summer camp and, as a result, have a cast of all-star Anderson regulars searching after them. The cast includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand and Jason Schwartzman.

    "Prometheus"
Ridley Scott's return to the genre that made him a legend also boasts a screenplay co-written by "Lost" executive producer Damon Lindelof and enough mystery surrounding the plot to fill dozens of message boards. Aside from the handful of wonderfully crafted trailers, we've also had the cast list to fawn over. "Prometheus" stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Idris Elba.

    "Savages"
After seeing the sexy teaser trailer for "Savages," it would be difficult to not find it a spot on the list. The film, directed by Oliver Stone, follows two pot growers and dealers who have to rescue their shared girlfriend after she's kidnapped by a Mexican cartel. The footage we've seen so far looks like a return to Stone's "Natural Born Killers" and "U Turn" days.

    "Snow White and the Huntsman"
What started out as just one of the two Snow White films this year turned out to be one of the most visually interesting films of the summer. This reimagined version of the Snow White tale casts Kristen Stewart as a warrior princess who must fight for her kingdom against the milk-bathing evil ways of the Queen, played by a frightening Charlize Theron.

  • Ellen Page Calls Working With Woody Allen 'Trippy'

'It's a very dreamlike feeling,' 'To Rome With Love' actress tells MTV News.
    By Fallon Prinzivalli

    Photo: Philippe Antonello/Gravier Productions/Sony Pictur

Ellen Page has come a long way from the girl whose wit stole our hearts in "Juno." From the psychological thriller "Peacock" — about a man who can't seem to control his alter ego, Emma — to the sci-fi blockbuster hit "Inception," she's taken on an array of roles that prove her acting talent. In the upcoming Woody Allen film "To Rome With Love," we'll get to see Page assume another character that strays widely from her usual lovable disposition as she seduces her friend's boyfriend.

The movie follows four separate stories, all taking place in Rome, Italy. When Monica (Page) jets off to the Eternal City after breaking up with her boyfriend, she begins a romance with her best friend Monica's (Greta Gerwig) guy, Jack (Jesse Eisenberg). When MTV News spoke with the actress recently, she told us what it was like to work with the ensemble cast, what she found challenging about the role and what's next in her career.

MTV: What lead you to choose this script?

Ellen Page: Well, you know, Woody Allen wrote it, so that has nothing to do with it. [Laughs.] And also, it was just a role and a character that I had not done before — at all — so it was exciting and challenging and nerve-wracking, and all those things which are really nice to feel.

MTV: What else attracted you to that role?

Page: I guess, probably just exploring something that was so far removed from myself. Like, I was confused as to why Woody wanted me to do it, you know? It scared me and I think it was about figuring out how to be able to feel comfortable in that and do something new.

MTV: Was that what you found challenging about the part?

Page: I don't know about comfortability, but maybe believing it. You know, like you yourself and hoping that others will too. And it's challenging because it's confusing. When you're doing something that's for a vignette, you have limited time. It's not like you are going in depth with this strenuous arc of a character. So in some ways that makes it more difficult or more confusing.

MTV: You mentioned Woody Allen. He wrote, directs and stars in the film. What was it like working with him?

Page: Trippy. I feel like that would be the best way to put that. It's a hard thing to really wrap your head around when it's happening — to be standing on the golden, sunlit streets of Rome with Jesse, who's so wonderful and such a talented actor. And then [there's] Woody Allen walking up to you to give you direction. It's a very dreamlike feeling. I sort of forget that it even happened. It's weird.

MTV: What was it like acting opposite Alec Baldwin and Jesse Eisenberg?

Page: They're both awesome, and Greta Gerwig as well. We had such a great time together and Jesse is so kind and so down-to-earth. Alec and Greta as well. Just three lovely people to spend every day with all day. I had a really nice time getting to know Alec. I've been such a huge fan of his for so long and I think he's wonderful.

MTV: The film takes on a similar story structure to "Paris, Je T'aime" and "New York, I Love You." Both movies follow separate story lines that don't always connect to one another. Do you think comparisons to the film would be fair?

Page: Well, not particularly, because "Paris Je T'aime" is [comprised of] distinct short films with different directors. I feel like this is different because you have the very distinctive Woody Allen voice. And you have these four scenes that are separate, but ultimately there are themes in the film. It's the invisible things that string it all together. But I wouldn't say that it's comparable to those [films] only because it's not like each vignette is a separate, isolated short film from another person's creative endeavor. It's all one person.

MTV: You recently voiced the character of Lindsey on "Family Guy." You've done voice acting in the past for "The Simpsons." Do you find that more difficult than being in front of the camera?

Page: No, I really love it, actually. I wish I could do more, because you kind of have to overdo everything, obviously, because you're not being seen and it's [only] your voice. That's actually really fun. In my job, it's about making things quiet, I guess. But that's really fun and you get to go in the [studio] and wear whatever you want. It's kind of like my dream job. [Laughs.]

MTV: What's next up for you? We heard "The East" with Alexander Skarsgård is set to release this year.

Page: Yeah, I think that should be coming out this fall. I'm super-excited about "The East." It's going to be really interesting. I'm super-pumped for that movie. [My character] is probably one of the most emotionally and physically exhausting roles, in the best way. It was such a dream role for me that just abruptly popped up in my life. [It] was just so much fun.

MTV: Is there any type of role you're dying to play? Or a particular actor or director you'd love to work with?

Page: I mean, god, that's hard. If I started to name actors and directors I'd love to work with, I wouldn't stop. I just think so many people are incredible [and] when it comes to specific roles, that's always hard to say. I always want to do something that just speaks to me and where I'm at with my life, and something that feels honest and different.

  • 'What To Expect When You're Expecting' Doesn't Exclude The 'Dudes'

'We were really keen that the film should tell the story of guys and girls going through pregnancy,' director Kirk Jones tells MTV News.
    By Kara Warner

    Photo: Lionsgate

Before MTV News' Summer Movie Preview Week wraps up, let's take a look at the very star-studded ensemble romantic comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting." Although inspired by the very popular nonfiction book of the same name, the movie revolves around five very different couples and the hilarious highs and lows they experience during pregnancy.

The cast includes the following actors as couples: Elizabeth Banks and Ben Falcone, Dennis Quaid and Brooklyn Decker (the joke about their age gap is in the film, don't worry!), Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford, Cameron Diaz and Matthew Morrison, and Jennifer Lopez and Rodrigo Santoro. Plus a lot of entertaining banter from the "dudes club," consisting of funnymen Chris Rock, Thomas Lennon, Rob Heubel, Amir Talai and Joe Manganiello.

And no matter what you might think about romantic comedies or movies about pregnancy, director Kirk Jones ("Everybody's Fine," "Nanny McPhee") promised us there's something for everyone in this film.

"We were really keen that the film should tell the story of guys and girls going through pregnancy," Jones told MTV News recently. "That's what really interested me in the original script. We hoped that the final film would appeal to guys, and what's really encouraging is that I think our final preview scored almost as high with guys as it did with girls," he revealed. "What's great about the guys in the movie, the 'dudes club' headed by Chris Rock, Tom Lennon, Rob Huebel, Rodrigo Santoro and Joe Manganiello, those guys talk openly and honestly about their worries and their fears and their experience of pregnancy."

Which, according to Jones, included the good, bad and ugly when it comes to physical and emotional changes involved with being pregnant.

"If someone throws up, they're not throwing up because it's a cheap gag in the movie," he said. "They're throwing up because that's the reality of being pregnant."

In looking at the massive cast Jones had to work with, one might assume scheduling his actors was the most difficult aspect of the shoot, but that award goes to baby wrangling, not people wrangling.

"For every child we cast, we cast twins. If I was shooting three scenes, the first scene with a 3-month-old, the next a 6-month-old, the next a 9-month-old, that means I had seven sets of [each set of twins]," Jones recalled. "You do the math. I think one day we had 32 babies in 100-degree heat being kept cool with air conditioning."

Speaking of the heat, Jones and his cast and crew braved shooting in Atlanta in the middle of the summer. "I think our hottest day was 117 degrees. It was difficult for these very gorgeous women to look their best in those conditions, but every one of them were great."

Manganiello of "True Blood" fame got off a little easier than the rest of the cast because his character appears shirtless in a lot of the film, which, according to Jones, proved to be a distraction.

"Joe was great. He's got a phenomenal body and I say that as a straight guy," he admitted. "I looked around on set and the guys were just obsessed with staring at his chest. I don't know he does it. It looks like someone sculpted his chest."

"What to Expect When You're Expecting" opens everywhere May 18.

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies. • 'Total Recall' Remake Heads In 'A Different Direction' From Original

Director Len Wiseman tells MTV News about Kate Beckinsale going bad and Bryan Cranston's complex villain.
    By Kara Warner

    Colin Farrell in "Total Recall"
    Photo: Sony Pictures

We still have a while to wait for the August 3 release of the new "Total Recall," but now that we've seen and obsessed over the official full-length trailer, we have a better idea of what to expect from Len Wiseman's re-telling of the classic Philip K. Dick story, as well as how it compares to the 1990 cult favorite starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by Paul Verhoeven.

In addition to providing MTV News with his expert commentary about the well-received trailer, Wiseman also gave us some in-depth insight into how he's handled the precedents and expectations set by Verhoeven's film, how closely the 2012 film sticks to Dick's original story, as well as what fans can appreciate and expect from stars Colin Farrell and a villainous Kate Beckinsale.

MTV: How much fun has incorporating all the new technology been?

Wiseman: It's great. And, I will be honest: It's a blessing and a curse for me, because I'm so of a school of practical effects and practical stunts. And when you develop a movie like this, which is an entire world you're creating, you can only build so much, and then you go into your effects world. And actually, there's a lot of practical elements in here that people assume are CG, because CG is used so often. In the trailer, we did this really complicated shot of Colin doing a fight sequence shootout. The camera is spinning around, it's 100 percent practical. And it's funny when I really kicked the "how much time and how expensive" nightmare kind of math in to figure that all out and everything to put in, and what surprised me is a lot of people think that is CG. I think because you maybe don't immediately process how that's being done. But it's funny, because I look at that and go, "That's actually the shot that's entirely 100 percent practical." So I really do find it a blessing and a curse, because I started as a prop guy. I actually started building models initially and then went into the prop department, and I'm so much of a practical mind. But then you get into a point where, "OK, now we have to build a world that is 100 and some odd years in the future." And your construction budget, that's a surprise.

MTV: How will fans be impressed by Colin's performance?

Wiseman: I think they're absolutely going to love him. It's a very different take on the character. It's much more of the internal struggle that he's faced with, and he did such a great job with this mystery of his own soul, really. It's such a mystery, this film. It's got the action and sci-fi, everything hovering on the perimeter of what makes it feel like a big action film. But in its core, it's a mystery, and it's a mystery of himself. And I just think people will be really captivated by following his journey. He really does allow you to be him. So I really think they'll be excited by him.

MTV: What about seeing Kate Beckinsale playing a villain?

Wiseman: It's fun for us as well. She's never done anything like that. So to be able to have some fun with playing a villain — and she had fun doing it too, because she's always like, "You have to be so earnest when you're saving the world. Wow, you can actually just loosen up and just, the bad guys have more fun." I would love to get, I'll probably put this out on the DVD, but these girls are just kicking each other's asses and really brutal. We wanted to attack it. It was just a really vicious brawl, and in between the cuts, they both get so girly. Right on "cut." There's plenty of times when Kate actually just nicked Jessica [Biel]'s nose or same thing with Jessica, and they immediately just go from these vicious badass lethal killers to immediately very apologetic and very polite and girly. It's great to see.

    MTV: Will we see Mars?

Wiseman: We won't see Mars. And I got to say, it's one of the things that attracted me to the script, because I really, I along with a lot of other people, I really loved the Verhoeven film. I was very skeptical on just the reboot, just the idea. And until I read the script, with a lot of speculation going, it takes it in such a different direction from that film. Because it didn't go to Mars, funny enough, is why I was interested. And it's also just like I said: It plays a little bit into the threat of what the Philip K. Dick story had of, much more of bringing the threat back, really Doug's mission to save Earth, not Mars.

MTV: What can you tell us about getting Bryan Cranston?

Wiseman: He's got one really fun personality. I think a lot of people, if you've seen him in his prior TV show, I'm sure, I happened to be introduced to him through films and then "Breaking Bad" as well. I've never seen "Malcolm in the Middle," and I was taken by how fun and charming and funny the guy is. I probably came late to that game. That's no surprise to anyone else. He really has a balance of evil and charming, which I really like. He plays off great [with Colin]. I wish they actually had more scenes together. It's a bit of a weird structure, where the villain is kind of split between Kate and Cranston. So when they're together, though, it's great. He's really got a good balance there, where when there's a pure tendency that a lot of people have to play just very villainous, he has a little bit more passion for what he's doing, where you actually believe it is the right thing, rather than twirling your mustache a bit too much.

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies. • 'Hunger Games' Studio Taps Francis Lawrence To Direct 'Catching Fire'

Director behind 'Water for Elephants' and classic music videos is set to take over for Gary Ross.
    By Kara Warner

Just last week, the "Hunger Games" fandom was sent into a bit of a tailspin when director Gary Ross announced he would not direct the film's sequel, "Catching Fire."

Jaws dropped, heads were scratched and new names were thrown out and analyzed. Now, it appears Francis Lawrence will be stepping into Ross' shoes to direct the highly anticipated sequel to the record-breaking first film.

According to a very brief report from Deadline, Lionsgate has decided to go with Lawrence over "Moneyball" helmer Bennett Miller, the other recently rumored Ross replacement. There is no official word from the studio about the done deal, but by all appearances, they have found their man.

For those not familiar with Lawrence's résumé, the "Water for Elephants" and "I Am Legend" director got his start in music videos. Go and rewatch his clips for Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," Jennifer Lopez's "Waiting for Tonight" and Britney Spears' snake-wielding in "I'm a Slave 4 U" for examples.

Lawrence's first big feature film was the 2005 DC Comics adaptation "Constantine"; the Keanu Reeves starrer was met with a lukewarm reception from critics. His next films — "I Am Legend" and "Water for Elephants" — were much better performers, in addition to being stylistically appealing and action-packed in different ways.

Given his previous work with action and highly stylized music videos, Lawrence is a fine choice and should be right at home in adapting the visually intense and dramatic second book in Suzanne Collins' best-selling trilogy. And as MTV's Amy Wilkinson pointed out in this week's Hobnobbing, we should all be happy that they're making the second film in the first place and that the principal castmembers are already locked in to reprise their roles.

  • 'Prometheus,' Hologram Tupac Proof-Positive Of Nerd-tastic Future

On this week's 'Talk Nerdy,' are the new 'Prometheus' viral video and Tupac's Coachella hologram proof that the future has arrived?
    By Josh Wigler

The future is now — just ask Tupac or Michael Fassbender.

Earlier in the week, nerd culture scored two big victories: one, the arrival of Hologram Tupac, who performed from beyond the grave at the Coachella music festival. Shortly thereafter came the announcement of David 8, a new line of androids from Weyland Industries set to launch on the upcoming "Prometheus" voyage.

Frankly, both sound like ridiculous sci-fi concepts that could only occur in the far-off future. But one of those things actually happened. Even if you're not a hip-hop fan, the fact that a walking, talking, swear-slinging Tupac Shakur appeared before Coachella attendees for nearly five full minutes 16 years after his death should illicit an avalanche of geek-gasms. It certainly did for "Talk Nerdy" co-host Eric Ditzian.

"Holo-pac is the beginning of something very new," Ditzian said in Splash Page's latest Hero of the Week column. "It's a sci-fi nerd's dream come true, in a sense — a game-changing technology no longer part of a fictional realm but in our own."

He's right, of course. For years, we've watched men, women and aliens alike appear via holographic image on the bridge of the USS Enterprise, as an urgent message issued through the eternally adorable R2-D2 and so on. Messages from fully formed individuals based in another place, perhaps even in another time, coming our heroes' way through the inexplicable powers of science fiction. None of that was real, of course, because let's be serious: Did we ever expect to see these kinds of things happen anywhere other than in Space, the Final Frontier or in the land of a Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Away? I certainly didn't.

Tupac — with a little help from Dr. Dre and friends — proved me wrong.

But it says a lot that even with the newfound discovery of Holo-Pac, I remain equally obsessed, if not more so, with "Prometheus." Ridley Scott's first science-fiction film since 1982's "Blade Runner" is easily my most anticipated film of 2012. That says a lot, considering this is the same year that sees Earth's mightiest heroes together onscreen for the first time, the same year that Bane might break the Bat on behalf of Christopher Nolan. The first two "Alien" films are permanent fixtures in my otherwise evolving list of all-time favorite movies, but it wasn't until I saw the David 8 advertisement — a viral video that sees Michael Fassbender's cybernetic character explain his own capabilities and uses as a robot, eerie and fascinating and beautiful in every sense of those words — coupled with Tupac's digital return, that I realized why I'm so excited for "Prometheus."

Maybe it's the power of a good Guy Pearce speech. Or maybe I've just binged on one too many geek movies in my day. But I look at the list of achievements accomplished by Pearce's "Prometheus" character — Sir Peter Weyland, a pioneer in many fields including terraforming and robotics — and I can't stop thinking that maybe, just maybe, we're not so far off from having a Broca Dialectical Implant (the first language tool that requires absolutely no learning on the user's part) or developing faster-than-light space exploration vehicles.

No, at the moment, there are no functional hoverboards as promised by the movies, and the Nike Air McFlys do not yet lace themselves up without assistance. And maybe we'll have to wait a bit longer than 70 years to meet an android with the same emotional depth as David. But right now, we do have a long-deceased music legend performing from beyond the grave via hologram. If we brought Tupac back in 2012, then what can't we accomplish by 2073?

It's not a robot ... but we're getting pretty damn close.

  • 'Magic Mike' Trailer: Stripping Down The Clip

We take a closer look at the teaser for Channing Tatum's upcoming flick.
    By Amy Wilkinson

    Photo: Warner Bros

Hide your kids, hide your husband, and stuff your purse full of $1 bills, because the trailer for Channing Tatum's stripper movie "Magic Mike" has shimmied onto the Web!

The film stars Tatum as an exotic dancer named — what else? — Magic Mike, who takes an up-and-coming young performer named the Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his tutelage. But, as strippers are wont to do, Mike is hoping for more from life than body oil and G-strings. He hopes to build furniture! And date the Kid's sister!

You'll have to pony up $10 come June 29 to find out if his dreams come true, but in the meantime, check out what else your eagle-eyed experts at MTV found noteworthy in the tawdry trailer:

    Channing Tatum's Acrobatics
Co-star Matt Bomer already warned us about Tatum's "sick" moves, and of course we've seen "Step Up" about 20 times, but it's easy to forget how adept the Chan-man is on the dance floor, seeing as he's most frequently cast as an action hero ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," "Haywire") or a romantic lead ("Dear John," "The Vow"). All we have to say is, get this guy into toe shoes more often, Hollywood!

    Cody Horn Hits the Scene
Tatum's love interest is likely a new face to many a moviegoer. Her name is Cody Horn, and this could be her big, ballsy breakout role. The actress' résumé is largely filled with television credits in series like "Rescue Me" and "The Office." Her next big-screen role is in September's "End of Watch," which also co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Anna Kendrick and America Ferrera.

    But Where Is Matt Bomer?
Tatum, Pettyfer, Horn and Matthew McConaughey (who plays the strip club's owner) all get good looks in the trailer, but there are several beefy babes missing in action — most notably "White Collar" star Matt Bomer. An appearance (preferably shirtless) by the blue-eyed stunner is at the top of our wish list for trailer #2. "True Blood" star Joe Manganiello's blink-and-you'll-miss-it performance was also much too short. Maybe a little less Mike in the next tease, huh, guys?

Click on our expert video commentary above to hear what else we were cheering and jeering in the trailer!

  • Tribeca Film Festival: Our Most Anticipated Movies

From a feel-good rom-com to a tear-jerking documentary, this year's festival has a variety of films we can't wait to see.
    By Kevin P. Sullivan

The Tribeca Film Festival is now upon us, and with so many films playing this year, it can be hard to parse what's worth checking out.

As festival founder Robert De Niro told MTV News, his goal each year is to fill the lineup with quality films. "The goals are the movies. Have good movies and good choices," he said. "You can't always get what you want, but we try to get the best things that are out there."

We've looked through the lineup and awarded superlatives to some of this year's most talked-about movies at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Most Promising Short Film: "Pitch Black Heist"
Here's a movie that features Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham, who play thieves looking to steal the contents of a safe. The catch is that the office that houses the safe is equipped with a light-sensitive alarm, so they must conduct the heist in total darkness. If that doesn't persuade you to seek out this 14-minute short film, we're not sure you like movies that much.

Sundance Darling Award: "Searching for Sugar Man"
This stranger-than-fiction documentary chronicles the life of Rodriguez, an unsuccessful but influential Mexican-American folk singer, who supposedly committed suicide onstage. The doc follows two filmmakers who decide to find out what happen to Rodriguez. "Searching for Sugar Man" earned rave reviews out of Sundance this past January, so expect the same from Tribeca.

Best Superhero Movie: "The Avengers" (by default)
Honestly, this wasn't a very fair fight. Of course Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk are going to take the prize for Best Superhero Movie at an independent film festival. Though the movie doesn't exactly fit in the lineup, Joss Whedon's superhero extravaganza is New York to its very core, so what other film festival could host the event?

Best Movie We've Already Seen: "The Five-Year Engagement"
"The Five-Year Engagement" is the next effort from the guys who brought you "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "The Muppets," Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller. Their new film has consistent belly laughs throughout and will leave you utterly charmed like no other rom-com in the past year. Segel and Emily Blunt both turn in believable performances that have you rooting for them from the first frame.

Short Doc Most Likely to Make Us Cry: "Alekesam"
"Alekesam" has a few key ingredients that make it a surefire weep-fest and a potentially huge hit at Tribeca. First, it's the real-life story of a musician, Hugh Masekela, who is exiled from his homeland of South Africa during the apartheid. Secondly, after years away, he attempts to re-establish contact with the son he left behind. Yep, the tears are already coming.

Doc Most Likely to Make Us Laugh Till We Cry: "Mansome"
Thankfully, we have Morgan Spurlock and a cast of some of the world's funniest men to cheer us up. "Mansome" is a look at modern man's grooming habits that features the likes of Zach Galifianakis, Will Arnett, Paul Rudd and Jason Bateman.

Which movie from Tribeca Film Festival are you most excited to see? Let us know in the comments!
