  • Kanye West's 'Cruel Summer' Premieres In Cannes

Kid Cudi tells MTV News watching himself on seven screens simultaneously during 30-minute film 'was weird! But it was dope.'

CANNES, FranceKanye West is nothing if not ambitious. The rapper/designer/mogul has added a few more slashes to his name, as producer, writer and director of the experimental short film "Cruel Summer," which had its premiere during a splashy party Wednesday night during the Cannes Film Festival.

The 30-minute short, inspired by West's upcoming G.O.O.D. Music compilation of the same name, was projected onto seven screens inside a tented pyramid, designed to give viewers a fully immersive experience. "Cruel Summer" stars G.O.O.D. artist Kid Cudi as a car thief who falls for a blind Arabian princess. The seven screens alternately come on and off, sometimes showing different angles of one shot, other times acting as an extended wide screen, complete with a ceiling and floor. This means the audience looks around them at the images, instead of staring straight ahead, which, as Kanye explained in a speech, was to reflect real life.

"It related to a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era, where we're always on our BlackBerry in a ball game or at the movies," West said. "I was very particular about having the screens separate, where your mind puts the screens back together, the way you put memories together. I'm not the best director in the world, but I had an idea that I thought would be amazing to inspire people, like a dream of one day this being the way people watch movies. You know, Tarantino doing a movie like this or a horror movie like this, animation, 3-D ... in this form that surrounds you. People want to go back and see it more and more because they missed something to their left or to their right, and it feels more like the experience of life."

"Cruel Summer" plays like an extended music video, in a similar way to 'Ye's 2010 online film for "Runaway," with sparse dialogue and striking slow-motion images set to a rocking soundtrack. The music is provided by various G.O.O.D. artists, many of whom make cameos in the film, and there's a super quick appearance by comedian Aziz Ansari.

Among the celebrity names attending the premiere party at the Palm Beach Club were Jay-Z, Kim Kardashian and Kid Cudi, who told MTV News the experience of watching himself on seven screens was surreal.

"It was weird! But it was dope," Cudi said. "I'm nervous, just like with anything I do, with people watching, but I'm really proud of it. I'm happy that Kanye had me as part of it. It's so humbling. He's a genius, he's the best, the illest ... you can quote me on that!"

"Cruel Summer" was co-directed by Alexandre Moors, who previously worked with 'Ye on the videos for "Runaway" and "N---as in Paris." The script was based on a screenplay by Elon Rutberg, and it was shot entirely in Qatar in the Middle East.

"We were literally shooting in Qatar less than a month ago," West said. "It was the most impossible feat, all odds were against us having this moment, showing this at Cannes. The reason why I went so hard is that this is my goal. What I want to do post-Grammys is I want to change entertainment experiences. Like if [late fashion designer Alexander] McQueen or [director] Tarsem [Singh] was to meet the entertainment value of Cirque du Soleil or Walt Disney. We're going to bring it to New York to Qatar and re-edit it ... so you guys are seeing the rough draft of this concept."

Although the world premiere of "Cruel Summer" coincided with the Cannes Film Festival, it is not in competition or part of the official screenings. The film is now open to the public in Cannes until May 25.

  • 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Delayed To 2013, Adding 3-D

Paramount pushes back release date from this summer to March 29, 2013, in hopes of better box office internationally.
    By Kara Warner

For those of you who were eagerly anticipating the June 29 release of the "G.I. Joe" sequel, your wait just got longer. In a surprise bit of movie-schedule shuffling, Paramount has pushed back the release of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" from this summer to March 29, 2013.

Why the nine-month delay? The studio wants to convert the film into 3-D. According to Deadline, Paramount made the move in hopes adding 3-D will translate to more impressive box office numbers internationally.

"We're going to do a conscientious 3-D job, because we've seen how it can better box office internationally," an unnamed studio exec revealed to the site. "Jim Cameron did all of 'Titanic's' 3-D in post — and look how well that movie turned out."

Paramount told MTV News the studio's only concern is making the best movie possible and the movie will be best in 3-D. A representative for director Jon Chu declined to comment on the release-date change.

Deadline points out the fact that this is not the first time Paramount has pushed back a release, and it has been rewarded for that decision: The delay of Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" resulted in the director's biggest box office hit to date. Also, the March release date has been proven to have major moneymaking potential in the wake of the global success of "The Hunger Games."

An argument can be made that the release-date change is all about dollar signs, much like most decisions in Hollywood. We could also speculate that another reason for the move might be the pressure of having to perform well against the likes of seemingly unstoppable juggernaut "The Avengers" and the very highly anticipated July 20 release of "The Dark Knight Rises."

  • Kristen Stewart Gets Frisky In New 'On The Road' Clip

Two new scenes from Walter Salles-directed film show glimpses of Stewart's and Kirsten Dunst's characters.
    By Fallon Prinzivalli

A few lucky cinephiles saw Kristen Stewart's latest project "On the Road" when it premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday (May 23), but don't let your jealousy turn you green with envy just yet. For those of us who weren't able to jet off to France, MTV News is debuting two new clips from the film!

The first preview gives us a closer look at Stewart's character, Marylou. Labeled as a sexually loose free spirit, she confirms the description as the scene opens with her attempting to pleasure Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) while she's driving. After admitting to Sal her fear that her husband Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) is going to leave her, she reveals her desire for a simple, secure life. "I just want a house, a baby, you know, something normal. I really do want that," she says.

As they continue their drive, she discusses the possibility of returning to a fiancée in Denver. That's when Dean wakes up in the backseat with a wide grin on his face and says, "I just had a great idea. You guys are gonna love it."

But we'll have to wait for the film's release to hear what he's thinking, because that's when the first clip ends.

Adapted from Jack Kerouac's Beat generation novel, the movie follows Dean, Marylou and Sal on their provocative road trip across America in search of self-discovery. As they pursue "it" — the pure essence of experience — they find themselves encountering an eclectic group of people who influence their journey in different ways. One of the people they come across is Camille, played by Kirsten Dunst.

The second scene gives us a preview of Camille and Sal's blossoming relationship as they sway back and forth to some jazz tunes in a bar. She asks if he's staying in Denver long, and with a look to his friends, he says he doesn't think so. But they disregard the thought and sing along to the song, laughing and enjoying the moment.

In an interview with Auréliano Tonet, director Walter Salles said it's the type of movement in this clip that helped the movie capture the energy of the book. "That's the power and drama of the characters in the film: They burn, burn, like Roman candles," he said. "How can this energy be represented onscreen? In the throbbing of bodies and gestures, constant motion, dancing. But we also had to find interludes of silence and contemplation, to contrast with the quick-paced sequences and bring out their speed."

  • 'Great Gatsby' Trailer: Why Jay-Z, Kanye, Jack White Set The Tone

Baz Luhrmann's musical choices for the period clip are surprising -- but also spot-on.
    By Brendan Dempsey

    Photo: Warner Bros.

The new trailer for Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" hit the Web on Tuesday night. And while the first look has already generated plenty of excitement, there's more than a bit of curiosity, too, since the clip opens to lavish 1920s New York scenes set to ... Jay-Z?

As Jay and Kanye's Watch the Throne track "No Church in the Wild" plays in the background, a Tobey Maguire voiceover explains that "the restlessness approached ... hysteria."

Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Hov? OK, we're in. In fact, this kind of thing is nothing new for Luhrmann, whose penchant for setting period flicks to modern music has become one of his calling cards. In 1996's "Romeo + Juliet," Romeo (also DiCaprio) toted a pistol to the sound of Radiohead, while pop star Christina Aguilera provided some of the sounds for "Moulin Rouge," which was set in the early 1900s. Luhrmann's take on "Gatsby" will be true to the text but that doesn't mean fans can't expect real creativity as far as the soundtrack goes.

At first listen, the songs in the trailer appear to have been chosen because they both sound great and complement the tone. But on further examination, it seems safe to assume that Luhrmann chose each song methodically, each number there to serve a distinct purpose. Read on as we break down key tracks!

"No Church in the Wild," Jay-Z and Kanye West:
Jay and Kanye touch on status symbols, criminality, partying, and money in the Frank Ocean-featuring track, all of which factor into F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel. The 21st century lyrics, about the declining American Dream, closely parallel the excesses of the Roaring '20s.

    Notable Lyrics
"Rolling in the Rolls-Royce Corniche": Gatsby's yellow Rolls convertible is a key symbol in the story.

"Socrates asked, 'Whose bias do y'all seek?' ": "The Great Gatsby" paints a picture of a man who did everything to gain respect and notice with the help of status symbols and wealth. Gatsby was constantly seeking approval — in all the wrong places.

"Let me buy you desire": Gatsby, very literally, tried to purchase the desire of the upper class and his long lost love, to no avail.

"I'm hidin' from police": The film is set during the crime-filled Prohibition era and it's inferred in the story that Gatsby amassed his fortune as a bootlegger.

"Love Is Blindness" (U2 Cover), Jack White:
Written by U2 for their 1991 album, Achtung Baby, the song got another life courtesy of White, who delivers it with his signature raw emotion.

    Notable Lyrics
"Love is blindness, I don't want to see/ Won't you wrap the night around me?/ Oh, my heart; love is blindness" : The one lesson that Gatsby never managed to learn in the Fitzgerald classic is that "love is blindness."

But the trailer isn't the only place where Luhrmann enlisted the help of contemporary stars like Jay and Kanye.

"On my first day, he had Jay-Z pumped up full and we did the entire scene with, you know, Jay-Z in our ear on full blast while acting and it was just so liberating," "Gatsby" star Isla Fisher said in a recent interview. "[Luhrmann] really understands actors and how self-conscious we feel at times, and how exposed we are and how we never know where anything lands. Just the complexity of being vulnerable every minute when you're acting, and he just makes you feel so safe."

If the first trailer is any indication, we are in for a treat when the soundtrack for Gatsby is released in December.

Share your thoughts on the first "Great Gatsby" trailer in the comments!

  • Sylvester Stallone 'Ups The Ante' In 'Expendables 2'

'It's a bunch of mugs having a good time and just kicking each other around,' he tells MTV News.
By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

    Photo: MTV News

Earlier this month, the explosion-filled, firearm-packed trailer for "The Expendables 2" premiered, showing the A-list cast — including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis — kicking some serious ass.

When MTV News spoke to Stallone at CinemaCon 2012, the action star told us the sequel raises the stakes, mostly due to the all-star cast.

"We do up the ante. We have a bit more money," he said. "When people go in there, at first they say, 'Well, it's not [Robert De Niro's] "Deer Hunter." ' And I say, 'Of course, it's not "Deer Hunter." It's a bunch of mugs having a good time and just kicking each other around.' It's male pattern badness.

"And this one here, because of Arnold, Bruce, [Jean-Claude] Van Damme and the addition of Liam Hemsworth, we all try to capitalize on sort of the baggage we bring. You know, we have certain catchphrases and certain looks and certain things that we've been known for, [especially] Chuck Norris, so we throw it in there and have fun with it. I think this one here is gonna be a bit more enjoyable. The scope is quite a bit larger."

The sequel follows Barney Ross' (Stallone) return when Mr. Church (Willis) enlists the Expendables for a seemingly easy job. It seems like easy money for the team, but that all changes when one of their crew is brutally murdered. As they seek revenge, they find themselves trapped in enemy territory and up against an unexpected threat.

The other actors starring in the film alongside Stallone include Jason Statham, Jet Li and Terry Crews, — adding to a team that's hardly expendable. But with such a packed cast, where would a third movie go from there? Stallone told us he doesn't yet have another team of thespians in mind for a threequel.

"There's one or two, but there's not enough to do a whole [movie]," he said. "There are guys who are good, but they're not of that ilk. It's very odd that becoming an action guy is kind of like the ugly stepchild, like, 'Oh, you didn't make it.' It's very hard, because if you notice, there's only been about six action guys in my lifetime that have somewhat made it, because it's a very odd, odd combination. Guys have to be somewhat entertaining. It's not about muscles, per se."

"The Expendables 2" is set to hit theaters August 17, and for right now, the only other project on Stallone's plate is the sci-fi thriller "The Tomb." But Stallone said he knows there's another story in his beloved "Rambo" series yet to come.

"There's a volcanic eruption for Rambo. The magma of Rambo is coming to the surface," he said. "I know there is [another story]. You know when you lay down the final culmination of your life and you can articulate it, but also act on it, and he realizes what his destiny really is. And it's not to be a farmer, it's not to be obscure, it's really to go out in a blaze of glory — in a heroic fashion. But is he really doing it for himself or is he doing it because that's just his id? That's just who he is?"

  • Big Sean 'Can't Wait' To See Kanye's 'Cruel Summer' At Cannes

'He showed me it was possible, he showed we can make movies,' Sean tells MTV News of mentor West's influence.
    By Rob Markman

When most folks want to catch a flick, they just drive to their nearest movie theater. But Big Sean is so excited to see Kanye West's new "Cruel Summer" film that he hopped on a plane to Cannes, France, on Tuesday night.

"I can't wait to see it. I can't wait to see the story, how it all came out," Sean told MTV News after the 2012 BET Awards press conference in New York.

"Headed to France... For 1 day," the Finally Famous MC tweeted shortly after our interview.

We can totally understand Sean's excitement. It's not like the short art film can be viewed in just any old theater. On Wednesday (May 23), Yeezy will premiere what is being described as a "7 screen experience" at the world-famous Cannes Film Festival, then "Cruel Summer" will remain open to the public for the next two days.

Aziz Ansari, Kid Cudi, Lebanese actress Razane Jammal ("Djinn") and Palestinian actor Ali Suliman ("The Kingdom") are listed as stars in the movie. Even Big Sean has a small part in the flick, which shares its name with the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music compilation. "I was there while they were filming it though, and I'm a part of the movie, just a little here, a little there. But I'm excited to see it," the Detroit rapper told us.

For Sean, having West as a mentor has already paid dividends. Now the "My Last" spitter is looking to branch out into Hollywood. "Shout-out to Kanye too for just being that guy to get into other fields and just do great. From his movie he did, 'Runaway,' to this, to movies he's gonna do and just being that person that showed me it's possible," Sean said with much admiration. "I'm sitting up in meetings with movie producers myself, like, 'Yeah, man,' because he showed me it was possible. He showed we can make movies and do all this stuff."

  • Kristen Stewart's 'On The Road': Cannes Reviews Are In!

Critics agree the film doesn't capture the spirit of Jack Kerouac's Beat novel.
    By Fallon Prinzivalli

Kristen Stewart in "On The Road"
    Photo: MK2 Productions

Kristen Stewart hit the 2012 Cannes Film Festival to debut her latest film, "On the Road." Adapted from Jack Kerouac's Beat Generation novel, the film centers on writers Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) as they journey across America with Dean's wife, Marylou (Stewart), living in a whirlwind of sex, drugs and writing.

Despite the American classic being considered unadaptable, director Walter Salles took on the ambitious project, much to the dismay of critics. While they say the movie remains faithful to the book, they feel the film version lacks the spark Kerouac carried throughout the novel.

    The Story
"You can't help but wish that Salles and screenwriter Jose Rivera had focused less on the stories in the book and more on the story of the book — its writing, its reception, the publisher making Kerouac change the names of the real parties concerned and his edits, the 6-year gap between its being written and its being published. Cinematographer Eric Gautier ('Into the Wild,' 'A Christmas Tale') does incredible work, but after a while the film feels like any other road trip — no matter how beautiful the scenery flickering by through the window is, eventually you just want to get out of the god---- car. Salles may have pulled off the achievement of faithfully adapting Kerouac's novel, but as episodes blur and bleed between each other with scenery as punctuation, you might find yourself wishing for a little less literary fidelity and a little more cinematic storytelling." — James Rocchi, Indiewire

    Director Walter Salles
"With a romantic like Salles at the wheel we weren't expecting 'On the Road' to hold a mirror to today's disenfranchised American youth. But we weren't expecting such a tedious, flat film either. Ultimately that's the price paid for failing to tone down the narcissistic, shallow tendencies of the characters — although it doesn't account for just how few memorable scenes there are (with the exception of K-Stew's boobies and Hedlund nailing a sherried Steve Buscemi). You can keep the Zeitgeist embalmed in myth and nostalgia for as long as you like, but to truly reinvigorate it you'll need a whole lot more than a whiskey-hued lens and a frontseat full of pretty faces." — Adam Woodward, Little White Lies

    The Performances
"Salles gets excellent performances from his cast, which includes Viggo Mortensen as the William Burroughs figure and Kirsten Dunst as the girl Cassady married after finally breaking up with Marylou. However, he struggles to give his story the strong dramatic line it requires and concentrates instead on sequences which illustrate the book best. What we do get, thanks to Riley's perceptive performance, is the sense that he is watching Cassady tasting life before he gingerly partakes." — Derek Malcolm, London Evening Standard

    The Final Word
"Many have speculated that 'On the Road,' Jack Kerouac's seminal beat novel, is unadaptable for the screen, and Walter Salles' game attempt suggests that this may indeed be the case. Despite its pretty cast and sun-ripened colours, the film quickly settles into a tedious looping rhythm of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) experiencing some kind of beatnik debauchery with co-wanderers Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and Marylou (Kristen Stewart), before retiring to a shady corner and scribbling wildly in a notebook. Neither the journey nor the destination seems to matter a jot." — Robbie Collin, The Telegraph

" 'On the Road' does, ultimately, have a touching kind of sadness in showing how poor Dean is becoming just raw material for fiction, destined to be left behind as Sal becomes a New York big-shot. But this real sadness can't pierce or dissipate this movie's tiresome glow of self-congratulation." — Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

  • Charlize Theron Prefers 'Angular Nudity' To Full-Frontal

'I am very good with side nudity. I tend to find that's probably my best kind of nudity,' 'Snow White and the Huntsman' star jokes to MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Nearly everything we need to know about how awesome Charlize Theron is as Evil Queen Ravenna in "Snow White and the Huntsman" we learned from the film's visually stunning trailers.

For starters, the Queen's beauty routine seems particularly cumbersome. There is a life-force-sucking element of some sort, weird baths in white and black goo, etc. Because those baths in question clearly involved Theron to appear at least partially nude, we had to ask for her thoughts on how to maximize "back nudity."

"Hunch," she told MTV News with a laugh, before demonstrating an uncomfortable-looking pose and groaning as she hunched over. "I am very good with side nudity. I tend to find that's probably my best kind of nudity," Theron added, speaking of her preference to show different sides versus her entire back or front. "Back is a little too much back; I need an angle. I like angular nudity. I can do a small percentage of one [side] and the other."

Moving along to the subject of the different types of "goo" Theron was submerged in during filming, we asked whether she preferred the head-to-toe shower or the black and white substances.

"Oh my God, I prefer the white because it was heated, and the black was not, and it was really, really f---ing cold," she said. "It stained, it actually stained. It was so late, I was just like, 'Just get it [off].' I probably now am going to die a very slow death because I got into stuff that I don't even know what it was," she said before joking about a few new superpowers she mysteriously acquired after production wrapped.

"I can bend metal with my breath," she joked. "I don't know where that came from."

  • Will Smith Laughs Off Kissing-Reporter Incident

'Men in Black 3' star opens up to David Letterman about the 'joker' who tried to kiss him.
    By Jocelyn Vena

    Will Smith
    Photo: MTV News

Will Smith made headlines last week while he was premiering "Men in Black 3" abroad. At the film's Moscow premiere, a male reporter from a Ukrainian program called "1+1" attempted to give the actor a kiss mid-hug. Well, Smith didn't take to kindly to the sneak attack and responded by slapping him.

When Smith stopped by "Late Show With David Letterman" on Tuesday night, he laughed off the encounter but let it be known that he's not into impromptu make-out sessions with strangers on red carpets.

"I didn't beat up a guy! No, no. I was in Moscow and ... we're doing an interview and he says, 'Man ...,' he was a reporter and he says, 'I'm your biggest fan, can I have a hug, please?' " he recalled to Letterman. "So I go to give this joker a hug and he tries to lean in to kiss me, you know? And ... it's just awkward, Dave."

The "1+1" crew and Smith talked out the encounter at the event, and the man in black added, "I don't know. ... They were [like] 'We're sorry, you know, it's just his shtick.' and I said, 'That's why his ass got shtuck.' "

"Men in Black 3" opens May 25, just in time for Memorial Day weekend. MTV News recently caught up with the actor, who shared why he thinks the third film in the "MIB" franchise is so special.

"The fun of [this film] is trying to make it new but not so new that it don't match," Smith said. "We had to be able to create something that was brand-new, that stands on its own, and it's been 10 years since the first movie, so there were a lot of things working against it. But it's the first time it's in 3-D — my ears are in 3-D for the first time," he said with a laugh. "I'm very happy with it."

  • Will Smith's Reasons To See 'MIB 3': Alien Chickens And His Ears In 3-D

    By Kara Warner

If you are a fan of "Men in Black" and "Men in Black 2," then you should definitely plan on seeing the franchise's third film, "Men in Black 3" when it hits theaters this weekend. Not only are our favorite suited-up agents J and K up to their old tricks, witty banter and all, but their third outing features an appropriately science-fiction-y element of time travel that introduces us to a young Agent K, expertly played by Josh Brolin.

If those plot points don't have you ready to buy tickets, take it from the series' star Will Smith himself, who says you won't want to miss seeing his ears in 3-D.

"The fun of [this film] is trying to make it new but not so new that it don't match," Smith told MTV News recently. "We had to be able to create something that was brand-new, that stands on its own, and it's been 10 years since the first movie, so there were a lot of things working against it. But it's the first time it's in 3-D — my ears are in 3-D for the first time," he said with a laugh. "I'm very happy with it."

Smith went on to tell a story about another part of the film that made him happy: watching an alien chicken trip and fall.

"With these types of movies, the set tends to take on the tone of the movie, the amount of silliness and things. You just see the most bizarre things on movies like this," he said. "I saw a 7-foot-tall chicken trip and fall. You would never see that anywhere in the world! There was a chicken alien and she had these foot-and-a-half heels on so she was 7-foot-tall in a chicken outfit, and she trips and falls. I just thought that was fantastic."

Bring up the "favorite moments during filming" subject with director Barry Sonnenfeld and he'll tell you a tale of his star's acting skills being a bit rusty at the start of production.

"On the first day of photography, we filmed Will on a blue-screen stage having to jump down [from the top of the Chrysler building], and what was great about it was that he hadn't acted in three years and was really bad," Sonnenfeld recalled. "Luckily, we cut out the bad stuff, but that first take we did after he hadn't acted in three years, I was sweating because he was no good. After I yelled, 'Cut!' Will said, 'Baz, I can do better! I'm really rusty!' And within a day or two, it all worked out fine. But man, it was interesting. You know how they say 'Once you learn how to ride a bicycle, you never forget?' Well, Will forgot how to act for the first day or two. Luckily he wasn't acting with other actors or it would have been really embarrassing."

Anyone who doubted the cinematic treat director Baz Luhrmann will deliver this Christmas in the form of his "Great Gatsby" need only watch the first teaser trailer to have their curiosity decidedly piqued. The visually stunning two-and-a-half-minute trailer features stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan in all their glamorous, early 20th-century-styled glory.

Here are five key elements to look out for:

    Leonardo DiCaprio Reclaims Matinee-Idol Status
There's no doubt Leonardo DiCaprio is a gifted, serious actor; just look to his impressive and Oscar-nominated body of work for proof. And while his careful and calculated decisions with regard to his gritty and more art-house-oriented film roles over the years are indeed admirable, there's part of his fanbase dying for him to get back to his matinee-idol roots, ß la Jack Dawson in "Titanic" and Romeo in Luhrmann's 1996 adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet." Judging by what we've just seen in the trailer, his performance as Jay Gatsby will more than do the trick. DiCaprio's acting skills are perfect for the tortured-yet-revered hero, not to mention the fabulous suits he's wearing to fit the time period.

    The Roaring '20s
Speaking of the time period, there's just something magical about the 1920s, the decade in which the film and F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel take place. The glitz, the glamour and the nostalgia all make for a very alluring package, particularly when put in Luhrmann's very capable hands. It is clear from the trailer that the Australian director's take on Fitzgerald's classic will involve a faithful telling of the story that capitalizes upon the most visually stunning elements of that time period. And don't forget that the film was shot in 3-D.

    Gatsby At The Moulin Rouge
Luhrmann fans should appreciate the highly stylized, fast-paced theatrical style we've come to know and love from the director. There are several shots of party scenes in the trailer that would have worked just as well in or doubled for scenes from Luhrmann's Oscar-nominated love story "Moulin Rouge." And thanks to the colorful madness on display in the scenes of revelry, it makes the more quiet, emotionally charged interactions between Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) that much more powerful.

Mulligan And Maguire's Moments to Shine
Speaking of Mulligan, it's obvious from Luhrmann's carefully intercut Gatsby and Daisy scenes that the Oscar-nominated actress will be pulling on our heartstrings with her performance. Not to mention Tobey Maguire as narrator/reluctant hero Nick Carraway. His voice-over is reminiscent of Ewan McGregor's in "Moulin Rouge" and reminds us of his underrated performance as "Pleasantville" idealist David. Similar to DiCaprio's return to matinee-idol form, we're excited to see Maguire as a wide-eyed optimist — at least at first.

    Right Music, Wrong Time
We've already mentioned the fact that the film is set in the 1920s, so how is it that Luhrmann opens his trailer with the 2011 club bumper "No Church in the Wild," by Kanye West and Jay-Z featuring Frank Ocean? Because Luhrmann's anachronistic musical selections have a successful track record, that's why. Would we have picked the song to open this trailer? No. But the bass-heavy, Auto-Tuned beat is perfect for setting up the scenes to come. For the second half of the teaser, Luhrmann deftly foreshadows the story's elements of heartbreak and loss with Jack White's powerful cover of U2's "Love Is Blindness."

  • Brad Pitt Says Violence In 'Killing Them Softly' Is 'Important'

Actor also tells reporters at Cannes Film Festival that he and Angelina Jolie have yet to set a wedding date.
    By Kara Warner

When it comes to the comings and goings of Brad Pitt, nearly everything the A-list actor says or does makes international news. That's why, when Pitt participated in a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday (May 22), he found himself faced with several questions not entirely related to his upcoming flick "Killing Them Softly."

And according New York magazine's Vulture, Pitt was more than happy to answer all of them.

He was asked about the heavy violence in "Killing Them Softly" and whether, as a dad, he had any reservations about playing a killer. In the gritty crime drama, he portrays a hitman who is hired by a crime boss (Ray Liotta) to find and kill a pair of overzealous upstarts who attempt to stake their claim by robbing a high-profile card game staged by Liotta's character. But according to Pitt, the role didn't disturb him at all.

"Not in any way, because murder is an accepted possibility when you're dealing in crime," he told reporters. "I would have a much harder time playing a racist or something along those lines. That would be much more unsettling for me than a guy who shoots another guy in the face." Pitt went on to say that the violence in the film is realistic in that it's not glorified for the sake of entertainment.

"We live in such a violent world. I certainly grew up hunting, which is a very violent act," he said when asked if the film was in any way influenced by the popularity of graphic video games that involve gangsters and hired killers. "Have you ever had a hamburger? Have you seen how they butcher cows? It's barbaric, it's horrendous, it's very violent. This is the world we live in, so I see it as absolutely important to film."

The Oscar-nominated actor even happily answered a quandary about whether or not his upcoming marriage to longtime love Angelina Jolie would affect his work schedule.

"We have no date. We actually really, truly have no date," he said. "It's something that makes sense to us ... and we're still hoping we figure out marriage equality in the States before then, before that date."

  • Charlize Theron 'Fell In Love' With 'Agent 13' Concept

'Snow White' actress tells MTV News how she 'stalked' director Rupert Wyatt after hearing about the sci-fi adaptation.
By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Charlize Theron has played more than a few not-so-nice characters. She received critical acclaim for her role in "Young Adult," where she played an unstable woman intent on winning back her married high school sweetheart. Now she's working on a project with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" director Rupert Wyatt called "Agent 13," in which she'll reportedly play another femme fatale.

When MTV News caught up with the "Snow White and the Huntsman" actress, she revealed how the sci-fi project came together.

"It's a pitch that I heard a month or so ago and I fell in love with this pitch," she said. "And ironically, at the same time, I really wanted to have a general [meeting] — 'cause you know how I stalk directors — with Rupert 'cause I really love what he's been doing. I brought up the pitch to him and he said, 'I really love this. I think we should talk about it.' And so it was really just the universe coming together."

"Agent 13" is an adaptation of a 1988 comic book that follows an organization called the Brotherhood, which comprises survivors of the lost civilization of Lemuria. The title character was kidnapped by the Brotherhood as a young boy and trained to be one of their top spies. When Agent 13 realizes the group has been corrupted, though, he sets off to take them down.

Fans are speculating that Theron will play one of the agent's two sidekicks — his seductive lover, China White, or his beautiful, devoted assistant Maggie Darr — but the actress isn't sure which character she'll play. "You know, we're writing it right now so it's a very, very loose pitch," she said, "but it's an alternate world story so it's big and epic and cool."

With the Wyatt project still in its early stages, fans can get their fill of evil Theron as the wicked Queen Ravenna in "Snow White" when it opens on June 1. Her character's cruel nature, she said, gave her license to act like a jerk between takes.

"I'm like yelling for sandwiches and coffee," she joked. "And then, Chris [Hemsworth] comes by and he's like, 'You're not shooting right now, Charlize!' And I say, 'Your head on a silver platter!' And he says, 'No, you're not the queen right now.' And then it crushes me, and I cry, and I deal with it."

While Theron hasn't ruled out playing the nice girl, she teasingly said that for now she takes on the roles most familiar to her. "I stick with what I'm good at," she said, laughing.

  • Bill Murray Crashes Wes Anderson Cannes Interview

And this writer couldn't be happier to sit back and let the 'Moonrise Kingdom' duo share a moment.
    By Adam Murphy

    Photo: MTV News

CANNES, France — Sitting across from "Moonrise Kingdom" filmmaker Wes Anderson, decked out in a corduroy suit on the beaches of the French Riviera during the Cannes Film Festival, I can't help but ask about his relationship with his muse (and my personal hero), Bill Murray.

Anderson feels around for the words to adequately characterize their connection, which has developed over the course of six films. "Bill is the kind of guy," he begins, "There aren't that many people you could turn to if there was a mob and say, 'Please, guide them this way or that way.' "

Just then, a voice off camera distracts Anderson. The voice remarks how great the "Moonrise Kingdom" premiere party was the previous night.

"Yes it was, it was," Anderson responds. "We were literally in the middle of me speculating about what you get out of this experience of working together."

At this point, I realize Bill Murray is standing just over my left shoulder. "I was going to go on," Anderson says to Murray, "but then I thought maybe it's better if you just say."

It occurs to me that this is actually happening: Bill Murray is crashing my interview with Wes Anderson. Looking more like he's on vacation than promoting a film, Murray joins Anderson on camera. I take my cue to sit back and watch.

"It's really fun, and I do feel that I am sort of in the center, because I've been in [Anderson's films] a long time," Murray says. "And I welcome others to come in, and I try to inform them of the rules of the place and how they have to behave. And the great thing is that the kid [Anderson] keeps getting better and better. ... I'm so proud of what he does now and how much fun he's having doing it. Because that's the reason I do it, 'cause I have fun doing it. And he's really done an excellent job of instructing others how to have fun and make it a real adventure to play."

"Pretty good, pretty good!" Anderson says.

"Yeah, for just waking up!" Murray replies.

After this moment of sincere, shared admiration, Anderson asks, "Can I hug him on MTV News?"

Who am I to stop them? I look back to the camera to make sure this is real. After their embrace, Anderson compliments the longhorn skull on the sleeve of Murray's polo shirt. There's some discussion of meeting on a boat later. I immediately get the impression that these two are as close as we all like to think they are. I imagine the two of them taking turns playing old 45s for each other by lantern light in a tent in the living room.

And then he was gone. Anderson acknowledges that his moment with Murray ate up a bunch of my interview time, a point so ludicrous it actually proves what an earnest guy he is. Someone tells me I've still got a couple of minutes left with him. How do I possibly follow that?

  • Justin Timberlake Returns To Music As A Film Composer

Fiancée Jessica Biel hires JT for her film 'The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.'
    By Kara Warner

For those of you who've been eagerly anticipating Justin Timberlake's return to music, that day has come. Sort of.

Timberlake has been hired by fiancée Jessica Biel to serve as the music supervisor and composer for her new film "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea."

According to The Wrap, "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" revolves around a grieving widower who attempts to get over his wife's death through a new friendship with an imaginative young girl. Biel will not only star in the film, but serve as a producer under her production company Iron Ocean Films. Jeffrey Dean Morgan ("Watchmen") will play the widower and Chloë Grace Moretz ("Kick-Ass," "Dark Shadows") will play the imaginative new friend.

There's no word yet as to whether Timberlake might also make an appearance in the film, but it would make sense, given the singer/actor's recent self-imposed vacation from the music industry to concentrate on building a film career.

The big question here is if Timberlake's musical compositions and supervision will translate into actual new music from the onetime chart-topper. Only time will tell. The 31-year-old has kept himself very busy in recent years with his work in noteworthy films like "The Social Network," along with his involvement in MySpace and his venture into the world of home décor for HomeMint.

This is the first professional collaboration between longtime lovebirds Timberlake and Biel, who got engaged over the holidays last year and are said to be planning a big summer wedding.

  • James Franco Enjoys Being 'Attached To Iconic' Parts Like 'Oz'

Actor plays title role in Sam Raimi's 'Wizard of Oz' prequel, which also stars Mila Kunis, Zach Braff.
By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

    James Franco
    Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images

At this point, we're pretty sure there's nothing that James Franco can't do. He's an Academy Award-nominated actor. He's the author of a collection of short stories called "Palo Alto." He directs, produces and writes his own films. He's cast in project after project, including Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" and the new Nick at Nite series "Hollywood Heights." He's even directing a documentary based on the world of pornography, all the while attending school in some fashion, as either a student or a teacher. We can hardly keep up!

One of the most anticipated projects on his plate is the Disney film "Oz: The Great and Powerful," in which Franco plays the title role alongside Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff.

When MTV News caught up with the ever-talented actor, he told us that he enjoys being attached to a multitude of ventures, especially something as legendary as "Oz."

"I do like to do a lot of different things, and I think there is something really nice about being part of a bunch of institutions by being in this film," he explained. "Disney is a place that's been a big part of my life, and a lot of people's lives, since I was a kid. 'The Wizard of Oz' has also been a huge part of my life. The [L. Frank] Baum books were some of the first books I read on my own, so I like being attached to something as iconic as this."

The film, directed by Sam Raimi, is a prequel to "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" that explains how the wizard came to power in the land. And while the cast is tight-lipped about their roles in the movie, Mila Kunis offered up a tiny explanation about her character, Theodora, to MTV News' Josh Horowitz.

"She's a good person who gets her heart broken," the actress explained. "What happens to young ladies when their heart gets broken?"

"They turn into horrible, evil witches," Horowitz answered.

With a smile, Kunis replied, "You said it, not me."

  • 'House' Goes Out With A Bang

Series finale, 'Everybody Dies,' was flawed yet moving.
    By Tami Katzoff

Hugh Laurie in the "House" finale
    Photo: FOX

In the eight years "House" was on the air, the title character had plenty of opportunities to die: He'd been shot, electrocuted, in insulin shock and cardiac arrest and involved in a horrific bus crash, and he'd taken enough drugs to kill him many times over. Another chance came during Monday night's series finale — and it was a big one.

    (Warning: Spoilers ahead!)

The episode, fittingly titled "Everybody Dies," starts off with the doctor lying half-conscious in a burning building after a heroin binge. Beside him lies his Patient of the Week, already dead. We know that he's facing six months in prison for violating his parole, and his best bud, James Wilson, is dying of cancer. Things do not bode well for Dr. House.

The story of the final hour of "House" does not unfold chronologically; we learn how House arrived at his precarious position through flashbacks. His expired patient had originally come to Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital as a drug-seeker, but House quickly found evidence on the man's body of yet another medical mystery to solve.

Throughout the episode we see House being House: brilliant, manipulative and desperately unhappy. When he's MIA from the hospital, Doctors Wilson and Foreman learn that he's gone to score heroin from his patient, and they track him down. But they arrive at a building already consumed in flames. It's too late for House — or is it?

As in several episodes in previous seasons, various characters from House's past visit his subconscious, urging him to get up, get out and live. But there's an explosion, followed by a funeral. More familiar faces show up to eulogize House. They say nice things, but when it's Wilson's turn, he speaks the hard truth: "He was a bitter jerk who liked making people miserable."

Then we have our Tom Sawyer moment. While expounding on House's faults at House's funeral, Wilson gets a text that reads, "Shut up, you idiot."

By the end of the episode we learn that House has essentially faked his own death so that he can be by his best friend's side during the last few months of his life. In doing so he has sacrificed the ability to do the thing he loves the most, solving puzzles.

It's a sweet and moving episode, but certainly not among the series' best. There are too many implausibles: How does a crippled, drugged man escape an exploding building without a scratch? And how did he manage to switch his own dental records with those of his dead patient? Things like that don't happen, even on "House."

Bringing back old favorites like Sela Ward, Anne Dudek, Jennifer Morrison and Kal Penn was a nice touch, but it made the absence of Lisa Edelstein's Cuddy even more glaring. As House's longtime boss and short-time girlfriend, Dr. Cuddy was a significant presence during seven seasons of the show. She should have been at that funeral.

Like House himself, the show's last hurrah was deeply flawed. But the final scene, with Hugh Laurie uttering his last line as House ("Cancer's boring") before he and Wilson ride off on motorcycles to who-knows-where, was damn near perfect.

  • Solar Eclipse Inspires Silly 'Twilight' Tweets

Twilight Tuesday illuminates the funniest Twitter comments about Sunday's eclipse.
    By Kara Warner

Solar eclipse in Tokyo, Japan on May 21
    Photo: Bloomberg

Because we're still months away from the release of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2", there's a considerable lull in the world of "Twilight" news. There's a good chance we'll be reading a few "Twilight"-centric headlines on June 3, the day of our MTV Movie Awards, for which "Breaking Dawn: Part 1" is up for Movie of the Year and Best Kiss, but until then, we're playing a waiting game.

However, just because there's a lack of "Twilight"-themed videos and interviews doesn't mean the very dedicated fanbase stops talking about their favorite franchise. And never underestimate the ability of a "Twilight" fan to bring up the subject in any conversation, particularly when said conversation involves a natural phenomenon that ties into Stephenie Meyer's fantastical world.

Case in point: the recent partial solar and lunar eclipses, which inspired so many witty and sarcastic "Twilight"-related reactions and comments via Twitter that they deserved to be the subject of this week's Twilight Tuesday. Here are some favorite tweets on the subject:

"Twilight fans, I hear if you look at the #eclipse tonight you'll see vampires and werewolves frolicking. Or go blind. Whichever," tweeted the clever person behind the often-quoted The Dark Lord (@Lord_Voldermort7) account, a.k.a. the chief villain of the Harry Potter books/film franchise.

@Alvaradomusic offered some helpful advice to a stranger who lamented missing the opportunity to view the partial covering of the sun: "It's cool...just go rent the latest Twilight movie," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, YouTube star Kingsley (jokingly?) admitted that all the talk about the eclipse led him to a revelation of sorts about the third movie in the franchise. "Everybody was talking about the solar eclipse and I was like 'Oh, that's the image on the 3rd Twilight DVD box,' " he wrote.

Dan Munz wins the award for the best reference commentary because his tweet was creative, involved a visual aid and made a funny pun! "Wow, this eclipse is truly stunning. I can even make out a bit of twilight on the edge."

The eclipse to which he referred was a "Twilight" product tie-in on a pack of Eclipse gum. Like I said, it's punny! A funny pun.

  • Katy Perry's 'Part Of Me' Film To Show 'Everything,' Including Divorce

'It's about how I got there and the ride along the way, which can be bumpy,' pop star tells Ellen DeGeneres of her upcoming 3-D flick.
    By Jocelyn Vena

    Photo: Katy Perry/Twitter/Paramount Pictures

Katy Perry's July film release, the 3-D concert spectacular "Part of Me," will not only take fans on her tour, but will also bring them behind the scenes as she faces both highs and lows, professionally and personally. Most notably, while shooting the film back in 2011, she split from her husband, comedian Russell Brand, and the cameras were rolling through it all.

"I thought it was important for me to show everything in between," she said about including both the good and the bad when she sat down with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show Tuesday (May 22).

"Sometimes, people think that we're perfect, and we know we're not perfect at all," Perry continued. "I think it's important to start breaking down the idea that to achieve your dream, you have to always be perfect or flawless or live in a fantasy world. So that's why I decided to put everything into the film, in the most tasteful way.

"But, mostly, it's about how I got there and the ride along the way, which can be bumpy, but mostly, it was extremely fun."

Besides her recent personal bumps, Perry also opened up about the time before she became the pop star she is today, when record labels weren't sure what to do with the bubbly singer, given her strict religious background. "There was just a lot of the word 'no' being sent my way, and I just never accepted that," she explained about having to overcome industry woes and her upbringing to become the artist and person she wanted to be.

Perry also tweeted art for her new song, "Wide Awake." The track, the lead single for the July 5 flick, was also included on her Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection re-release, which dropped earlier this year.

The art is pretty simple: a close-up shot of Perry, her hair dark purple and done in soft waves, with butterflies in it.

Perry performed the track at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, the same day she dropped a lyric video to tease the release of her music video for the song, which she filmed back in early May. The lyric video has a Facebook timeline theme that, with every lyric, a different milestone pops up on her timeline, ranging from winning awards to releasing music videos.
