  • Watch It: 'Battleship' Goes For A 'Drive'

    Battleship

Finally, a blockbuster that stands a shot at dethroning "The Avengers" (not that we're necessarily rooting for such an outcome) sails into the scene this weekend: "Battleship," the action flick starring Taylor Kitsch! Loosely Based on the board game of the same name, "Battleship" has already been invading theaters globally for weeks, but it's now ready to make its domestic debut this coming weekend. One of our regular Watch It contributors checked the movie out this week, and loved what they saw.

Get more on "Battleship" and everything else we've been watching lately — yes, as the headline implies, you'll get some Ryan Gosling action today — in today's Watch It!

    Joel Hanek, MTV Movies producer:
You either love it or hate it, but "Drive," my favorite movie of 2011, is now available for streaming on Netflix. If you haven't seen it yet, please watch it! Right, we get it, Ryan Gosling is the hottest thing on the planet (no one is disagreeing the man is Charm personified), but let's look at the film in a bigger picture. Director Nicolas Winding Refn does a beautiful job at creating a world around a wordless character by combining a syncopating warm electronic soundtrack with the clean Nagel-esque glossy lens of LA to pull off this modern day film-noir. Not to mention that this film has the coolest supporting cast: Hank Scorpio and Hellboy (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman) give great gangster gravitas as the film's baddies, Bryan Cranston pushes the plot with shades of Ratso Rizzo, and Christina Hendricks, while she doesn't have much to do, is always a great addition.

    Tami Katzoff, MTV News producer:
I'm on a continuing quest to catch up on the films from last year that seemed intriguing but I somehow missed, so I recently watched "Hanna" on DVD via Netflix. It's about a teenage girl raised in total isolation by her dad, who (for reasons too complicated to enumerate here) has taught her to be the consummate assassin. Director Joe Wright is responsible for respectable dramas such as "Pride & Prejudice" and "Atonement," so I was expecting to see a dark yet straightforward thriller. "Hanna" is not that. It's strange and trippy and somewhat confusing. Also I'm not sure if Cate Blanchett was the right choice to play Hanna's nemesis. But what makes "Hanna" worth a couple hours of your time is the amazing performance of Saoirse Ronan as the title character. She manages to make Hanna wise yet innocent, sweet but absolutely terrifying.

Fallon Prinzivalli, MTV Movies editorial assistant:
Amidst mixed opinions on whether "Battleship" would sink or swim at the box office, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I went in without any expectations and thoroughly enjoyed the film. I think the biggest surprise was the humor, which is especially present in Taylor Kitsch and his "Friday Night Lights" co-star Jesse Plemons. I also want to note the audience reaction. One scene left the man in a suit who sat next to me covering his mouth in horror and two other scenes found practically the whole audience erupting in applause and celebratory cheer. There's something to be said about a film that can unite an audience. And while I don't claim to be a tech whiz, I thought the special effects were stunning. Overall, I recommend grabbing a few friends and heading out to see this flick. It may not be on the same level as "Avengers" (at this point, what is?), but the film stands on its own.

Kevin P. Sullivan, MTV Movies editorial assistant:
Since I consider "The Road" to be one of my favorite books of all time and "The Proposition" to be one of my favorite movies of all time, it was curious that it took me so long to watch John Hillcoat's adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. I didn't actively avoid it, but I never felt compelled to sit through it until the preview for "Lawless" hit and I knew I had to. "The Road" is undoubtedly made with an amazing performance from Viggo Mortensen, but when the horrifying images are stripped of McCarthy's poetry, they lose any shred of beauty or hope that the author stitched in.

Josh Wigler, MTV Movies Blog editor:
I'm the cheater of the group, aren't I? I cheated by listing "Hunger Games" books instead of movies a few weeks ago, and here I am again touting the "Survivor: One World" season finale. Sorry, I just can't help myself. I'm a lifelong "Survivor" fan — one of few who started in the very earliest seasons and hasn't stopped watching yet — and it's always been my pie-in-the-sky dream to be on the show. I even auditioned back in college. (No, the tape doesn't still exist, which is a shame; I ate a cat and it was awesome.) I have no illusions that I'll never get the chance to compete for the million bucks, but I did make it onto the show in a way I didn't expect — by attending the live finale in New York City. It was an unforgettable experience getting to watch Jeff Probst read the votes live and grant the Sole Survivor title to all-too-deserving winner Kim Spradlin. Definitely a super-nerdy experience that I won't soon forget. Okay, enough gushing... back to movie-watching next week, I promise!

    Amy Wilkinson, Hollywood Crush editor:
Now that my cable provider is HBO Go compatible, I'm finally jumping on "The Wire" paddy wagon. (Better a decade late than never, right?) A season into the gritty crime drama, and I'm beginning to understand the near-universal reverence for this show (despite my belief that there never possibly could have been that many payphones in Baltimore). Economical yet poignant writing, coupled with nuanced performances by Dominic West and Idris Elba (actually make that the entire cast — there's really not a weak link in the bunch) make this series worthy of much more than the two paltry Emmy nominations it received during its five-season run.

  • Ewan McGregor Begins His Cannes Film Festival Judging Debut In Today's Twitter-Wood

Today marks the beginning of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival! As actors, directors and filmmakers head to France over the next two weeks, certain stars are already making their splash. For instance, Sacha Baron Cohen (in character as Admiral General Aladeen) hosted a press conference in Croisette, Cannes' famous promenade, to promote "Dictator." Immediately following he hoisted himself on a camel—albeit with a struggle—and rode away for some shopping. Of course he did.

Also in attendance is Ewan McGregor, who's acting as a judge on the Cannes jury alongside fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, french actress Emmanuelle Devos and Diane Kruger among others. The festival opens with the Wes Anderson film, "Moonrise Kingdom."

The Bill Murray comedy takes place in the summer of 1965 and follows Suzy and Sam, two 12-year-old lovebirds who flee their home—an island off the coast of New England—and escape into the wilderness. The Sheriff, played by Bruce Willis, begins searching for the kids just as a massive storm approaches, and their once peaceful town is shaken up beyond anyone in the community's control—which might be for the best.

Other films making their debut (and featured on our top 10 must-see list) are David Cronenberg's mind-trip "Cosmopolis" starring Robert Pattinson, the movie adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" featuring Kristen Stewart and "Lawless," a southern crime film with Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Gary Oldman.

Is there a film premiering at the Cannes festival you're excited to see? Let us know in the comments and on Twitter!

  • Poll: Best Movie Awards Host

What do Nick Fury, Agent J and Austin Powers have in common? "They're all secret agents" is the obvious answer, but look deeper… think back… the actors who played those characters are among the finest MTV Movie Awards hosts of all time!

Indeed, we've had our fair share of memorable hosts over the years. There's no forgetting 2007's host Sarah Silverman, who ruthlessly ripped into the star-studded crowd with equal parts shock and hilarity. Jimmy Fallon took a gentler approach when he hosted in 2005; looking back on that night, it's easy to see why he's as widely adored on the talk show circuit as he is now. Even as recently as 2011, Jason Sudeikis left audiences in stitches at the Movie Awards, a perfect amuse-bouche ahead of his then-upcoming R-rated raunch-fest "Horrible Bosses."

Russell Brand joins the ranks of our great MTV Movie Awards hosts this year, but before we see what he's made of, let's dwell on the past a little bit longer. Which MTV Movie Awards host was the very best? Let us know by voting in the poll below!

  • 'Borat' Make Benefit For Glorious Sick Day Stash

    Borat

On Friday, November 3, 2006, I left school particularly quickly to meet my uncle at a movie theater nearby. My Uncle Mike was always the cool uncle, who knew good movies, so he had made a point of seeing "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" the day it came out. You can probably see why he was the cool uncle.

In the weeks leading up to that day, Sacha Baron Cohen's first theatrical release was heralded as a wide variety of things, including "sexist," "offensive" and "the funniest movie of all time." Mostly unfamiliar with Borat's previous appearances on "Da Ali G Show," I wasn't sure what to expect, but what I got was a new type of comedy that I'm still not sure I was ready for.

When "Borat" first came out, intrepid Kazakhstani journalist Borat Sagdiyev was more than an accent and the collection of catchphrases, like "Var niiccee!" and "How mauch?" that worked their way into frat boy-friendly pop culture references. Borat was shocking and dangerous in a way that most formulaic studio comedies wouldn't dare to be. Baron Cohen put himself in situation where he realistically could get hurt, but his dedication to the bit instead transitioned each encounter into classic comedy.

Baron Cohen's new film in theaters this week, "The Dictator," takes a head-on approach to criticizing both America and the foreign dictatorships it struggles against, but even without a main character seemingly ripped out of the front pages, "Borat" managed to comment on significant issues like the country's attitudes towards foreigners, racism and homophobia in a hysterically subversive way. Most of the laughs in "Borat" live and die with the audience's tolerance of awkward situations and the decimation of unspoken social agreements.

Though "Borat" hasn't necessarily aged well in the collective cultural memory—many now consider it a comedic fad along the lines of "Napoleon Dynamite"—but separated from that current standing, Baron Cohen's first major release remains his finest with his brand of brutally honest comedy still as biting as ever.

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. These are some of ours. Tell us about your Sick Day Stash picks in the comments or on Twitter!

  • 'Prometheus' Viral Video Teases Noomi Rapace And Weyland's Corporate Rival

"Prometheus… are you seeing this?" We are indeed, Elizabeth Shaw — we just don't know exactly what we're looking at!

A brand new "Prometheus" viral video has hit the web this week, and it's very different from what we've seen before. There are no powerful TED Talks or awe-inspiring android tutorials to gaze upon today. No, today we're getting to know Doctor Shaw, the female lead played by original "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" actress Noomi Rapace… and what we're learning about her, while interesting, is nowhere near as alluring as the circumstances surrounding the video.

Take a look past the break!

In the video, Shaw speaks about the differences between what a scientist knows and what she believes. She talks about how she believes the answers to the secrets of life exist in a specific place, somewhere she knows how to get to, but somewhere she needs Sir Peter Weyland's assistance in traveling to.

What's most intriguing is that the video is supposed to be from the Weyland Industries Prometheus crew files, accessible by classified personnel only. Clearly, it's been declassified for us. And it's not just a case of Weyland letting us take a peek behind the curtain, either, not by the looks of it: the flash of "Yutani" at the end of the video indicates that Weyland's chief rival is going to play a role in "Prometheus."

Will the movie be more of a showcase for the founding of Weyland-Yutani than previously expected? I certainly hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. Think back to "Prometheus" writer Damon Lindelof's other passion project, "Lost," and how it handled viral marketing around the time of season two: the Hanso Foundation was at the core of that campaign, but it barely came to fruition on the show itself.

So is Weyland-Yutani just the backbone of the viral campaign for "Prometheus," and nothing more than a background player in the film itself? We'll see. In the meantime, keep the viral videos coming — they're fantastic to behold.

  • Poll: Best Movie Awards Spoofs

People, if you're not already hip to this lesson, let us give you a tip: cool guys don't look at explosions. It's just science, really.

Actually, what it really is, is a callback to one of the best movie spoofs in MTV Movie Awards history, when Andy Samberg and Will Ferrell teamed up with J.J. Abrams (what?) at the 2009 show to stress to movie lovers the most important lesson one can take away from the action movie genre.

But that's not the first (or last) time the Movie Awards have poked fun at our favorite flicks. The boys of *NSYNC teamed up to save the world from "Armageddon" levels of doom in 1999, and later, in 2003, Justin Timberlake was back again, ready and reloaded to take on "The Matrix." As recently as 2011, Jason Sudeikis and Emma Stone went as far as to apply a live piano show to the art of movie-spoofing, as seen above.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of other movie spoofs to think back on fondly, but which one is the funniest of them all? We're leaving that choice up to you in the Movie Awards poll below!

  • Kristen Stewart Hopes To Shoot 'Cali' This Summer

Kristen Stewart is a badass. Skeptics judging her based solely on her work in the "Twilight" series might not feel the same way, but brace yourselves for "Snow White and the Huntsman." Early buzz is very positive for the film, Stewart's heroic performance included.

It's not the last time Stewart will get into action hero mode, either. She recently signed on to star in "Cali" for director Nick Cassavetes. Described as a gritty action pic taking place in Los Angeles, "Cali" sees Stewart playing the star of a fake snuff film. After running away with the cash and disappearing for years, Stewart's character must return from "the dead" to save the sister she left behind.

"That's my next thing," Stewart told MTV News about her future plans during the "Snow White and the Huntsman" press junket. "Hopefully after [the 'Snow White' press tour], we can go [shoot 'Cali'] in the summer and lock ourselves away for a few weeks in the Valley, in a little production office, and get together [some] weird, really freaky actor people."

Indeed, Stewart says that the movie is "filled with the coolest characters," leaving plenty of room for some memorable "freaky actor people" to climb aboard. But for the actress, on a personal level, "Cali" is a very important project that calls back to her past.

"I'm from the Valley, and it's been a while since we've captured that world," Stewart said of the movie. "It's super extreme. Everything about it. It's extremely violent and extremely funny and extremely emotional. It's not hard to watch, but it's really [in your face]."

Are you excited to see Stewart's "Cali" turn? Tell us in the comments section below or hit us up with your thoughts on Twitter!
