• Justin Bieber's Respected Michael Jackson Connection: Michael Madsen

Bieber's 'As Long As You Love Me' offer 'took me off guard,' says Madsen, who also starred with MJ in 2001.
    By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber tweeted that when he was looking for inspiration for his "As Long As You Love Me" video, there was no one he wanted to emulate more than Michael Jackson.

Coincidentally, when he needed someone to play his foe in the clip, he looked no further than a guy who has some experience working with Jackson.

That man is Michael Madsen, who appeared in Jackson's 2001 gangster-themed video for "You Rock My World" off his Invincible album. Oddly enough, the only people that have ever really asked the hard-edged actor to appear in videos happen to be Bieber and Jackson.

"Hardly ever [am I asked to be in videos], that was why it was kind of funny cause that doesn't usually happen," he told MTV News. "It came out of nowhere. It was the last thing in the world I expected, to be called by Justin Bieber. It was kind of funny. It took me off guard. It's not the usual thing people think of me for, but considering the role, maybe."

In the video, Madsen plays a tough guy who beats up Bieber after the teen ignores his request to stay away from his daughter. It was that cinematic storyline that got Madsen interested.

"I didn't want to imagine myself on a trampoline with a lollipop, so I asked for the story. I realized it was almost like a film production; and of course, I kind of figured that it might be an interesting thing to do," he said about the Anthony Mandler-directed video. "I didn't know what to expect... I was surprised... They got me a good wardrobe. That was my shirt though. I brought my own shirt; those kinds of shirts are kind of rare.

"The story is so much Shakespearian; the couple, they run off together out the window," he later continued. "It's rather like that, I thought that was interesting. And I thought the kid, he had an enormous talent and he was very gracious to my sons and was very gracious to my family."

It was actually those sons that convinced the Hawaiian-shirt-wearing "Kill Bill" star to make the video with Bieber. "Well I was surprised at first that the kid was interested in having me be part of his video," he recalled. "I went to my sons and I asked my boys, I asked my sons what they thought if I should if they thought I should do it or not. And, of course, they gently placed their hand on my shoulder and said 'Dad don't you realize who Justin Bieber is?' And I said 'Well, no, actually I didn't.' But with their blessing I decided I thought it might be interesting."

Do you think Michael Madsen's appearance in "As Long As You Love Me" bumps Bieber to MJ status? • Did Michael Madsen Enjoy Punching Justin Bieber?

The 'Kill Bill' actor details the graphic 'As Long As You Love Me' scene for MTV News.
    By Jocelyn Vena

Of all the images that make up the video for Justin Bieber's "As Long As You Love Me," none are as memorable as the moment that Michael Madsen lands his first punch on the singer.

Madsen's overprotective-father character may have enjoyed leaving Bieber bloody for wanting to date his daughter, but in real life, the actor said he didn't take any pleasure in the one-two punch.

"I didn't exactly enjoy slapping him around," he told MTV News on Thursday, one day after the video premiered. "Had he been a prick, had he been a brat, you know, I might have had fun with that. But he was actually, he was the opposite."

If fans are wondering if Bieber was nervous to take a beating for the Anthony Mandler-directed clip, Madsen explained that Bieber was more concerned about having it look real than scared to take the hit.

"He was very respectful, very respectful and decent to me," he said. "I think he wanted it to be well-done. I don't think he was blowing it off. I think that I've been around enough to know I can tell if somebody isn't really doing their job or taking what they do seriously. And I could tell from early on in the morning that he was. He wanted it to be right. He wanted it to be specific and had a good car, a '68 Charger. That's a pretty bitching car, you know? I saw that damn thing parked in front of the house and I went 'Wow, I hope that's mine.' But they put me in a Rolls Royce; not too bad at all."

So, given that Bieber and Madsen trade physical barbs and verbal ones, does the actor think Bieber has a future in Hollywood? "He had good eye contact. He was focused. He didn't have a double. I think he should leave the acting up to me," he laughed. "He can sing though. See I can't do that. It goes both ways. He can sing his head off and he's damn good at it, and I couldn't get close to that. He does his thing, and I do mine."

Speaking of his music, Madsen approves of the track, giving it a four-star worthy review. "I hadn't heard much of his music before. I wouldn't be in exactly the age range to listen to Justin Bieber, ok?" he joked. "It's not like I'm tuning in for it, but I did, I do like that song. I like that song a lot. It's very pretty. It's nice."

Do you think Madsen's blow to Bieber was realistic? Let us know what you thought about the video in the comments!

  • Justin Bieber Inspired By Michael Jackson For 'As Long As You Love Me' Clip

Singer tweets about the King of Pop's influence on his new video.
    By Jocelyn Vena

On Wednesday, Justin Bieber dropped his cinematic clip for his track "As Long as You Love Me." Heavy on drama and celebrity cameos, the video follows a lovelorn Bieber as he fights actor Michael Madsen for the right to hang out with his daughter, his one true love.

In addition to the Baz Luhrmann-inspired Hawaiian shirts and "Romeo and Juliet" story line, Bieber takes a few punches and slings some sassy lines at Madsen. His pal Big Sean also makes an appearance in the clip. And if fans were wondering what and who influenced the video, Bieber took to Twitter hours after the premiere to shout out his hero, Michael Jackson, for helping him step up his music-video game.

"MJ told stories with his videos. I wanted to tell a story. Feel like a movie. #AsLongAsYouLoveMe," he wrote, showing some love to the master. He later added, "Push the limits. Fight for what you BELIEVE in."

As of Wednesday night, Bieber was astounded that his video had amassed more than 1 million views in less than 10 hours. But that number nearly quadrupled on Thursday morning — as of press time, the video had almost 4 million streams.

Bieber is not only feeling the love for his "ALAYM" video but also for his "Boyfriend" video, which just received two 2012 MTV Video Music Award nominations for Best Pop Video and Best Male Video. Bieber goes into the September 6 broadcast already a two-time VMA winner. He'll learn if he can take home another one when the show goes live from the Staples Center.

The VMAs take place just weeks before Bieber kicks off his sold-out Believe tour, which coincidentally will also be heavily influenced by the King of Pop.

"He has been watching a tremendous amount of Michael Jackson concerts from the '80s and '90s," his manager Scooter Braun shared. "And he has been talking to me about how Michael incorporated magic and pyro and reveals and he wants to bring in that. [But] still do that acoustic thing, but he wants to take it to a whole new level.

"It's just really exciting," Braun continued. "Nothing makes him happier than being onstage. So it's gonna be fun to get back onto the road. I think he was an amazing performer before, but his level of dance and musicianship and his range [has grown]. He's a veteran now. I think he wants to take it to a completely new level."

  • Justin Bieber's 'As Long As You Love Me' Video: Growing Up Is Hard To Do

Bieber dives headlong into adulthood — and takes a beating from Michael Madsen — in his brand-new video.
    By James Montgomery

When Justin Bieber dropped his "Boyfriend" video back in May, he made one thing very clear: He's all grown up.

Yes, with its cool cars, hot clothes and even hotter women, "Boyfriend" was precisely the kind of video a newly minted 18-year-old would make, had they the means (and the relationship with Director X). It was a supercharged, supremely budgeted man's fantasy, and, much like manhood itself, there was nothing subtle about it.

And while the same can be said about his brand-new "As Long as You Love Me" clip — it's about a subtle as a hammer to the head — that's where the similarities between the two videos end. Director Anthony Mandler tones down the excess in favor of a genuine grittiness, and, in the process, makes "Boyfriend" look like child's play. If that clip was a fantasy ride, well, then "ALAYLM" is a reality trip. Adulthood isn't all fun and games, after all.

Part tragic love story, part pulpy thriller, the new vid finds Bieber flexing his acting muscles opposite Michael Madsen — that'll put hair on his chest — who plays an overprotective father/probable career criminal with a penchant for gaudy fashion (which is to say, the same kind of role he's been playing for 20 years now). Biebs has only the noblest of intentions for his daughter, but Madsen refuses to give their relationship his approval — a point he drives home when he advises JB to "hit the road."

Of course, given that this is a tragedy, Bieber doesn't listen, and, in-between some scenes of the young couple exploring the limits of their love — definitely his most adult to date — we learn that JB plans on rescuing his girlfriend from the grips of her father, via a late-night train station rendezvous. As you might expect, this doesn't sit particularly well with Madsen, who confronts Bieber and dishes out a savage beating (though at least he doesn't cut his ear off) while his daughter looks on in horror.

And while you'd think all that violence would be enough to further cement his love interest's desire to flee, sadly, she leaves Bieber standing at the train station, and at clip's end, he is heartbroken ... and alone. For the first time, Bieber doesn't get the girl, and the message seems to be clear: Being a grown-up ain't all it's cracked up to be.

In a lot of ways, "As Long as You Love Me" is probably a risk for Bieber; he dares to dirty up his image and isn't afraid to take a beating. Those scenes of violence are are particularly vivid, as are the subsequent performance shots where Bieber belts out the tune with blood dripping from his face. It's a credit to his newfound maturity that he'd trust Mandler's vision and allow the "ALAYLM" video to go to such great lengths. This is in no way a fun clip, but, then again, adulthood isn't supposed to be fun. Bieber seems to have figured that out, and, in doing so, he's only further separated himself from his tween-pop forefathers. They'd never go to the lengths or the depths he does here, mostly because they were probably afraid to grow up. It's clear Bieber isn't.

What do you think of Bieber's grown-up video for "As Long as You Love Me"? Leave your comment below!

  • Justin Bieber's 'As Long As You Love Me' Video Debuts Today!

MTV News rounds up everything you need to know about JB's upcoming clip.
    By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber is set to release his highly anticipated music video for his latest Believe track, "As Long as You Love Me," on Wednesday (August 1). The clip for the swirling club jam appears to have all the components of a memorable video. From the cast to the director, Bieber has enlisted some A-list talent to help make something that could be very, very epic.

Fans first started looking forward to the video when Bieber announced the song would be his next single back in June, riding high off the release of his chart-topping album. And while his VMA-nominated video for "Boyfriend" was light on concept — focusing more on Bieber, cars and pretty people — once a still from the new clip hit the Web weeks later, Beliebers knew that things were set to get much more remarkable.

Earlier this month, the singer dropped the image from the Anthony Mandler-directed video. In it, the 18-year-old pop stud appeared bloodied and bruised. At the time, little was known about what the video would be about, but Mandler did share that "It's a story of love.... #believe." Big Sean, who appears on the song, also tweeted about being on set with Bieber for the clip. Usher, will.i.am and Asher Roth all stopped by the set, Bieber wrote. No word on if they made the final cut of the video.

Then, just as news from the "ALAYLM" video began to slow down, Bieber revealed that "Kill Bill" actor Michael Madsen would be making a cameo in the clip. His role remained a secret, but that secret was unearthed last week when a teaser for the video dropped. In it, Madsen plays the overprotective dad of Bieber's love interest. In the intro for the visual, the actor warns the singer to stay away, or else. Judging from the looks of it, Bieber isn't planning to leave his lady love anytime soon.

The full video drops Wednesday, and that's when fans will learn if Bieber has abided by Madsen's rules or if he sets out to prove that love conquers all.

Do you think Justin will defend love in the "As Long as You Love Me" video? Let us know your theories in the comments!
