  • 'Pacific Rim' Image Introduces Charlie Hunnam And Rinko Kikuchi

    Pacific Rim

Thank you Entertainment Weekly for getting us even more hyped for Comic-Con than we already were. In addition to the awesome "The Hobbit" images we saw earlier, this week's issue of the magazine also includes a new look at Guillermo del Toro's upcoming film "Pacific Rim."

The first image from the movie introduced us to Idris Elba's character, and now we get to meet those played by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. Shock Till You Drop uploaded a scan of the image, which shows the two actors getting ready to start up their obsolete robot, Jaeger.

As we already know from the film's recently-released plot synopsis, Hunnam and Kikuchi are the stars of this film. They play a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee, respectively, who end being humanity's last hope for survival against a race of monstrous creatures known as the Kaiju. The aforementioned Jaegers are giant robots created to fight against the Kaiju, but it's only the one gunned by Hunnam and Kikuchi that actually stands a chance against "the mounting apocalypse."

We're hoping that del Toro brings a trailer for "Pacific Rim" to Comic-Con so we can get a better sense of how the Jaeger and Kaiju look in action, but we love what a departure these robots are from what we're used to seeing from del Toro. Our guess is the Kaiji will look more in line with the creatures in "Hellboy," "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Cronos."

"Pacific Rim" also stars Charlie Day, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff and hits theaters on July 12, 2013.

  • 'Ghostbusters 3' Scares Up New Writers

    Ghostbusters

    By Meg Malone

Who ya gonna call when "Ghostbusters III" is stuck in development? The callback here is apparently "New writers!"

Dan Aykroyd was quoted by WIVB about the new development while at a promotional event for his Crystal Head Vodka.

"We've got a new writing staff working on it now," Aykroyd said. "It's got to be prefect. That's the whole thing. There's no point in doing it unless it's perfect. So that's what we're up to now."

"Ghostbusters III" has faced numerous ups and downs in its lengthy development process. Way back in 2010 when MTV reported that writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg were working on the script, there was some alleged tension between director Ivan Reitman and Sony. At this point, the film was also planning on being out in 2011. Clearly that did not happen.

Casting has also been a drawn out topic of speculation, particular whether original "Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters II" star Bill Murray would return for a third go-around. In March, Akroyd stated that Bill Murray would not be returning for the third installment. Then just a few weeks ago, Murray spoke on "The Late Show with David Letterman" about the need for the project to have a high-quality script like the original.

Aykroyd didn't name any names about who makes up this new writing staff, but a Crystal Head Vodka cheers to these new writers—here's to hoping that they can help give this long-talked-about project the push it needs to get off the ground once and for all.

Are you still hopeful for "Ghostbusters 3"? Let us know what you think in the comments below and on Twitter!

  • Andre Benjamin's Jimi Hendrix Biopic Has No Jimi Hendrix Music

    Andre Benjamin

Outkast's Andre Benjamin might not be able to perform any Jimi Hendrix songs in his upcoming biopic about the late great rocker, but that doesn't mean he won't have any tracks to sing in the movie. The folks behind "All By My Side" are getting around the copyright issue with Hendrix's estate by having Benjamin perform a series of covers Hendrix did of other bands' music to help make the movie as realistic as possible.

It turns out that this is actually not that big of a deal for the movie's creators. Producer Sean McKittrick told Rolling Stone that he never went to Experience Hendrix, the group that controls the copyrights for Hendrix's songs, because he knew that they likely wouldn't need to use them.

"This is the story of Jimi being discovered as a backup musician and how he went to London and became Jimi Hendrix," he said, saying they didn't want to make a traditional biopic. "That would be like making a movie about Kurt Cobain. We all know how that story ends."

If that's actually the case, then the line-up of songs planned for "All By My Side" is pretty awesome. The film is set in London in 1966 and 1967, so McKittrick and the rest of the folks behind the project were able to narrow down which songs Hendrix would have performed during that time. According to Rolling Stone, we'll get to see Benjamin (as Hendrix) perform "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "Wild Thing," "Hound Dog," Muddy Waters' hit "Mannish Boy," Elmore James' "Bleeding Heart" and "Future Trip" and "Driving South," which Hendrix performed as a back-up singer for Curtis Knight and the Squires. Not too shabby after all.

Production on "All By My Side," which is currently filming in Ireland, is scheduled to wrap this week. We've seen images of Benjamin as Hendrix and he looks great, but McKittrick said that his transformation has been complete.

"Andre has been Jimi for four months now," McKittrick said. "He speaks and walks like Jimi. He dropped a ton of weight. The transformation has been amazing."

No word yet on when "All By My Side" will hit theaters, but the plan is to have it be ready for Sundance next year.

Do you think that this is a fair trade for the music in the biopic? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

  • 'Eastbound And Down' Will Return For A Fourth Season

    Eastbound and Down

Talk about a true gift for America's birthday! In a move that came out of left field, "Eastbound and Down" has apparently been renewed for a fourth season.

Variety is reporting that HBO has ordered eight new episodes for a show that was only planned to have three seasons. The series aired its seemingly final episode back in April and managed to tie up most loose ends, but we're excited that star/co-creator Danny McBride and the rest of the team are coming back for more.

Considering HBO has a habit of cancelling shows before their time due to low viewership (we miss you, "Bored to Death"), McBride and his other co-creators Jody Hill and Ben Best should take this as quite a compliment. We'd like to know just what HBO had to do to convince them they should come back, especially based on some comments McBride made earlier this year.

"HBO definitely wants us, and [co-creator] Jody Hill and I love writing for the show," McBride told Entertainment Weekly. "But there is other stuff we'd like to do. Both of us are ready to make jokes concerning people who don't have strange haircuts."

We're actually a bit nervous to find out where "Eastbound and Down" season four will pick up. Season three ended with Kenny Powers right where we wanted him, and we'd hate to find out that he has messed up yet again. Poor April! Then again, we can't imagine "Eastbound and Down" without McBride at its head, so we're sure he, Hill and Best have something clever up their collective sleeve.

  • Tom Cruise Gets Real Tough For 'Jack Reacher' Trailer

    Jack Reacher

It may come as a surprise, given the events of the past few days, but Tom Cruise is actually more than a famous three-time divorcee. He's also a working actor.

Cruise's latest action offering is an adaptation of Lee Child's "One Shot" and features the author's most famous recurring character, the massive drifter/vigilante Jack Reacher. While the film's creators may have downgraded the stature of Reacher for Cruise, all of the ass-kicking is still in place.

Check out the first full trailer (via Yahoo! Movies) for "Jack Reacher" after the jump!

We've watched the trailer a few times now, and we're a little confused. Director Christopher McQuarrie of "Usual Suspects" fame made the Nobel Prize-worthy casting choice of Werner Herzog as the film's main bad guy. Yet, no matter how many times we watch this first preview, we can't for the life of us find Herzog anywhere in the trailer.

Why would anyone do something so cruel?

Anyway, the lack of Herzog is probably just a way to keep our attention for at least one more trailer. This first preview introduces us to Reacher and his tough guy ways. A man in a hospital bed does a good job at laying down enough exposition that we learn that Reacher was once a cop that has now gone rouge, taking the law into his own hands.

Plus, he's got a sweet ride. The trailer largely focuses on Cruise's car, and then it shifts to bring attention to how scary Tom Cruise can be to a group of thugs.

  • 'Amazing Spider-Man' Round-Up: Reviews, Interviews And More!

    Spider-Man

Webs out, Spider-fans! Sony's long-planned "Amazing" reboot hits theaters today, giving you the chance to finally weigh in once and for all: can Marc Webb's take on "Spider-Man" match or surpass the Sam Raimi era? Critics are divided, but this much is clear: Peter Parker's about to make a whole lot of money, and you're probably contributing to the pile.

We've been covering "Spider-Man" very thoroughly all throughout MTV Movies over the past few weeks. Keep reading for highlights of our coverage!

    "Amazing" Reviews
Though some aren't sold on the "Spider-Man" reboot, count two of MTV Movies' very own writers among the "Amazing" fans. In his review, Kevin P. Sullivan calls Andrew Garfield's performance "nuanced, fully realized, and inventive enough to firmly stand apart from the time-honored, but safer portrayals of Peter," while Josh Wigler (hey! That's me!) writes, "Webb's movie works very well on its own, and even better as a launching point for future Spidey stories to come."

    "Amazing" Andrew
As we said, Garfield's work as Spidey is really fantastic. Stunt coordinator Andy Armstrong raved to MTV News about Garfield's willingness to carry out his own web-slinging stunts, and we've seen firsthand how well he handles himself on a skateboard. Add Garfield's own spider-research into the mix and you've got yourself a very well-rounded leading man.

    "Amazing" Romance
It wouldn't be a "Spider-Man" movie without lots of action, but there's plenty of heart to back up the fisticuffs. Garfield and Emma Stone are a compelling item both on and off the screen, and their dating advice is not to be taken lightly. Is "Spider-Man" the most romantic superhero movie of all time? We certainly think so.

    Not So "Amazing" Villainy
Rhys Ifans' Lizard is not a particularly compelling bad guy. It's not Ifans' fault; the actor does great work as Curt Connors, and his thoughts on why the Lizard acts so godly are very interesting to consider. But the CGI monster simply didn't work for the MTV Movies team, as we discussed at length in the video below. You can also click here for a greater look at the Lizard and his comic book history.

    "Amazing" Money
Lizard notwithstanding, "Amazing Spider-Man" has a lot of excellent ingredients in place. So it should surprise precisely nobody that the movie is on track to make all of the money. MTV News spoke with box office experts for their predictions on Spidey's opening weekend, and all of them are expecting high marks for the reboot.

  • 'Breaking Bad' Season 5 Clip: Walter Already Knows

    Breaking Bad

We are a little less than two weeks away from the return of "Breaking Bad," and AMC has just debuted its first full clip from the fifth season.

While the video doesn't contain any major spoilers for the first episode, there are some glaring references to season four's finale, so if you haven't caught up, go watch that instead.

    SPOILERS

The clip takes place in the aftermath of the nursing home explosion that took out Gus Fring and helped solidify Walter White's new status as a straight-up bad guy.

Check out the clip after the jump!

Something "Breaking Bad" has always succeeded at is a pitch-perfect use of dramatic irony. As Sklyar and Walter, Jr. return home from Hank and Marie's, the chemist's son tries to fill him in on everything he did at the end of season four.

As Skylar deftly points out, Walt already knows.

If you're worried about seeing too much from the episode before it airs in two week, there's no need. The clip only touches one aspect of the fall-out from the explosion and has nothing to do with the larger plot of the episode. We recommend taking a peek only to get a small "Breaking Bad" fix if your craving is too strong to wait until two Sundays from now.

But if you decide to hold out, we promise the wait will be worth it.

"Breaking Bad" returns to AMC on July 15.

  • 'The Hobbit' Premieres New Photos In 'Entertainment Weekly'

    Hobbit

In the lead-up to their big San Diego Comic-Con panel, Gandalf, Frodo, and the gang are gracing the pages and cover of the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly.

Warner Bros. is expected to bring "The Hobbit" out to San Diego next week in a very big way, so expect to see a lot more from Peter Jackson and the inhabitants of Middle Earth very, very soon.

You can check out the new photos from "The Hobbit" after the jump!

Of the ten new photos, the shot of Gollum, née Smeagol, stands out. We have yet to get a clear look at one of the saga's most famous characters, but here he is, as grey and slimy as ever.

    Hobbit Gollum

We also get a good look at the company of dwarves as they prepare to float down a river in the confined quarters of a wooden barrel.

    Hobbit Dwarves

Hugo Weaving also makes a welcome reappearance as Elrond, who plays a minor but significant role in this prequel to "The Lord of the Rings."

Also, is anyone else as pleased to see Ian McKellen back in his Gandalf greys as us? Listen, we're all for his evolution to "the White," but there's something classic about the grittier look.

  • Will And Jaden Smith's 'After Earth' Gets Plot Description

    After Earth Jaden Smith

A big-budget mystery project involving Will Smith will always generate some curiosity, but when you add in director M. Night "What A Twist!" Shyamalan, we're going to demand a few details.

"After Earth" is the latest effort from the infamous director and stars father-son duo, Will and Jaden Smith. The project and its sci-fi story have remained mostly under wraps, but with San Diego Comic-Con around the corner, an official plot description has surfaced (via /Film) in the programming schedule for the convention.

Read the full description after the jump!

"After Earth" will take on a relatively familiar sci-fi arc, but from the sound of the plot description, Jaden seems to be more front-and-center than dear old dad.

In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

General Cypher Raige, huh? Adding the i certainly adds a layer of subtlety to that one.
