  • 'Breaking Bad' Featurette Previews 'Crazy' Season Five

    Breaking Bad

The premiere for the fifth season of "Breaking Bad" is but a few short days away. If you aren't already primed with uncontrollable excitement for the further adventures of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, a new featurette from AMC (via Collider) has enough interviews with Vince Gilligan and the cast to make the wait almost unbearable.

So if your head is exploding with anticipation like ours are, take a look at the full featurette after the jump!

Perhaps the most interesting piece of information about the upcoming season comes from creator Vince Gilligan, who says that this year we will actually see Walt winning. Always the lovable loser, the idea of Walter actually becoming good at evil is a possibility too sweet to wrap our heads around.

We are now seeing the beginning of the end. The story of "Breaking Bad" was always described by Gilligan as one where the hero becomes a villain. At the end of last season, we saw the fruits of that transformation when Walt blew up a nursing home and poisoned a child. (Yeah, it does seem a lot worse when put that way.)

"Breaking Bad" returns to AMC on July 15.

  • Janis Joplin Biopic Finds Its Lead And Director

    Nina Arianda

    By Meg Malone

Exciting news today for Janis Joplin fans wishing to see the gravelly-voiced "Me and Bobby McGee" rocker grace the big-screen in her very own biopic.

According to a report by Deadline, Sean Durkin will direct "Joplin," with recent Tony-award winning actress Nina Arianda playing the titular singer. The film is set to primarily portray Joplin in the final months before her tragic overdose death at age 27, but will include flashbacks as well.

Durkin directed last year's well-received "Martha Marcy May Marlene," which screened at Sundance and helped launch actress Elizabeth Olsen into the limelight.

In June, Arianda won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Vanda in "Venus in Fur" and has had small parts in a few films. Arianda's performance in "Venus in Fur" was seen by Peter Newman, who is a producer on "Joplin." "I've never in my life seen an actress walk on a stage and convey the duality of vulnerability with overheated sexuality, which is what Janis was all about," Newman told Deadline, in addition to praising Arianda's vocal talents.

Deadline goes into more depth about the development history of "Joplin," which Newman said has been twelve years in the making. Newman has a valuable wheelhouse of material for the film, including the rights not only to Joplin's songs (the film is set to feature 21 of them, Newman said), but also her backing band's life rights and the rights to the books "Love, Janis" (letters written by Joplin that her sister published) and David Dalton's "Piece Of My Heart." Newman said production on "Joplin" is slated to begin next year and the film is set to be made for less than $20 million.

While "30 Rock" fans may still be curious for the Jenna Maroney off-brand version of the singer's life, it's nice to know we're getting closer to a version that, you know, can actually use her real songs.

  • 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution' Headed To Big Screen

    Deus Ex

Comic book movies have had their time in the spotlight, so is it now finally video game adaptations' turn? It seems like that could be the new era Hollywood is ushering in, solely based on two of the biggest news stories to come out of the past two days.

Hot off the news that Michael Fassbender will be starring in and co-producing an "Assassin's Creed" movie, CBS Films has announced that they've secured the rights to Square Enix's 2011 hit "Deus Ex: Human Revolution." The stealth action RPG is both dystopian and sci-fi, meaning a feature film version of it should be perfectly at home in Tinseltown.

The press release describes "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" as being the "primary template for the film," meaning the movie likely won't be a straight adaptation of the game. What it probably will take from the story are the human augmentation, espionage and ethical elements of the game that made it so well received last year.

"Deus Ex: Human Revolution" is the third video game in the "Deus Ex" franchise, and acts as a prequel to the original 2000 title. It follows main character Adam Jensen as an ex-SWAT-turned-private security officer for Sarif Industries, a biotech company with an emphasis in human enhancements. After being brutally injured in an attack on the company, Jensen is forced to undergo extensive surgery to have many of his limbs replaced with artificially enhanced ones (think "RoboCop"). He can upgrade these as the game progresses, allowing him to sneak better, be stronger and hack more effectively. Thanks to his new lease on life, Jensen sets out to try to unravel what turns out to be a global consipiracy.

The video game film genre is not one that's thrived in Hollywood, but with new "Resident Evil" and "Silent Hill" movies on their way and a lot of buzz surrounding the "Assassin's Creed" film, we'll guess that will change soon. Let's take bets on how long it will take before the "Halo" movie idea gets resurrected again.

  • 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Officially Casts Philip Seymour Hoffman As Plutarch Heavensbee

    Philip Seymour Hoffman

    by Meg Malone

It's still a long wait until "Catching Fire" makes its way to theaters in November 2013, but that hasn't stopped casting from becoming a topic of widespread speculation and debate in the lead up to the film.

Well, today another face has joined the Panem world — and it's quite a famous, Oscar-winning face. Lionsgate announced in a press release that Philip Seymour Hoffman has been cast in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, the Head Gamemaker for the Quarter Quell games in "Catching Fire."

The news doesn't come as a total surprise as it was reported back in mid-June that Hoffman had been offered the role, and now it looks like things are finally official. This particular casting news comes just about a week after Jena Malone was reportedly offered the role of Johanna Mason, the tough young woman and former victor, who Katniss and Peeta first meet in the second installment.

"The Hunger Games" gave us a fair amount of behind-the-scenes moments with previous Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane, so it'll be interesting to see if that same approach is followed when Hoffman's Heavensbee takes the helm in this follow-up film.

While the series really hangs on the shoulders of Jennifer Lawrence as the young lead, the way the various adult actors in the "Hunger Games" film-verse, including Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz and Elizabeth Banks, brought their unique characters to life all helped author Suzanne Collins' intricate world pop on the big screen. It'll definitely be fun to see how the uber-talented Hoffman carves out his own niche.

As with any Hunger Games casting, it brings to mind the famous "Hunger Games" line: "May the odds be ever in your favor." Any actor taking on the monumental task of living up to fans' expectations can surely appreciate the sentiment, but for Hoffman and the others, we predict that the odds will be pretty solid.

How do you think Hoffman will be as Heavensbee? Any other casting predictions? Share your comments below or on Twitter!

  • 'Boardwalk Empire' Season 3 Premiere Date Announced

It might not be present at Comic-Con like its HBO siblings "Game of Thrones" and "True Blood," but "Boardwalk Empire" is still giving us reason to celebrate. HBO has announced that the third season of the Steve Buscemi-starring TV series will return to the network on September 16.

The press release issued by HBO promises that season three will continue chronicling "the life and times of 'Nucky' Thompson, the undisputed leader of Atlantic City" in 12 new episodes. But just how tenuous will Nucky's undisputed reign be this season? After the death of a certain character at the end of season two, it will be interesting to see where season three picks up.

"Boardwalk Empire" will start up the week after "True Blood" airs its finale, returning to its usual time slot of 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. HBO confirmed that the season's cast will include Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Jack Huston, Stephen Graham, Michael Stuhlbarg, Vincent Piazza, Paul Sparks, Michael Kenneth Williams, Gretchen Mol and Bobby Cannavale.

We understand that Martin Scorsese is busy filming "The Wolf of Wall Street," but we would love nothing more than to see him return behind the camera on "Boardwalk Empire." He's served as executive producer (alongside Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Tim Van Patten) for all of "Boardwalk's" 19 episodes, but he only directed its pilot. As the series continues to get better and better, we'd love to see him lend his Oscar-winning directing talents to the show once again.

What do you hope happens during season three of "Boardwalk Empire"? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

  • Did Karl Urban Spoil Benedict Cumberbatch's 'Star Trek' Role?

    Benedict Cumberbatch

There's a lot we know about J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" sequel, and a lot we don't. Firmly in that latter category is the identity of the film's villain. Many people think it's Khan, others predict an entirely new character, and still others believe… well, a whole lot of things.

But perhaps the mystery is finally over. Perhaps we finally know who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing in the upcoming "Trek" flick — and it's all thanks to Karl Urban's loose lips.

    Possible spoilers beyond the break!

SFX recently interviewed Urban for his work in "Dredd," and asked what it was like having Cumberbatch as part of the cast. "He's awesome, he's a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary," was his answer.

In the original TV series, Gary Mitchell is an old friend of Kirk's from their training days. He comes into possession of dangerous telepathic abilities and poses a serious threat to the Enterprise crew. It's a classic "Trek" story, one that could work brilliantly for the big-screen — if any of this is true, that is.

Did Urban slip up and accidentally reveal some intel? Or was he just playing the game, further fueling the already torturous rumor cycle surrounding Cumberbatch's character? Don't forget that just a few weeks ago, screenwriter Roberto Orci made it clear that Mitchell is not in the "Trek" sequel. So who do you believe — the writer, the actor, both, neither? Lay out your theories and thoughts in the comments below or on Twitter!

  • 'Bourne Legacy' TV Spots Tease An Angry Aaron Cross

    The Bourne Legacy

"You think that Jason Bourne was the whole story?"

By now, it's clear that he's not. But Universal Pictures want to make sure that they're making that message clear in the three new TV spots the studio just released for "The Bourne Legacy" (via TheMovieBox.net). No, Bourne wasn't the whole story because there's also Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), an Outcome experiment who has had two altered chromosomes but is "not just a science project." Those two elements and the fact that Cross is out for revenge seems to be all anyone needs to know about the upcoming movie.

Of course, that's sort of all we want to know as well. The "Bourne" movies are fun because we can never quite figure out what they're all about until they're over, and we're glad Universal is (hopefully) keeping most of the major plot points close to their chest.

In a recent interview, Renner explained what sets Cross apart from his predecessor.

"[Cross is] coming from a completely different background to Jason [Bourne]. He knows exactly who he is; he signed up to this," Renner explained. "He wants to be part of a team. I can tell you he was in the military then he joined the [program]. He's a person who wants to be part of something... to have a sense of purpose. But then it's taken away."

"The Bourne Legacy" comes out August 10.

What do you think of "The Bourne Legacy's" marketing campaign so far? Is it important that Universal make Cross' connection to Bourne clear? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!
