  • 'Amazing Spider-Man' Cast: Their Best Movies

    Spider-Man

One of the greatest strengths of Marc Webb's maybe-too-soon reboot is an opportunity to recast the roles from Sam Raimi's trilogy with a truly impressive ensemble. Like many of the best superhero movies today, "The Amazing Spider-Man" attracted some major talents, so in honor of that film's release, we're taking a look back at each cast member's best movie.

Andrew Garfield - "Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1980"
Though he primarily appears in the first film of the trilogy, Garfield kicks off the "Red Riding" series with a lead role in the strongest entry. In "1980," the actor dons his almost forgotten English accent as Eddie Dunford, crack journo from the north country, who is just about the only man daring enough to investigate the case of disappearing children. The entire series is worth watching, but Garfield really stands out here.

    Emma Stone - "Superbad"
The role that started it all and the one that set the tone for her cool, sarcastic persona, "Superbad" announced the arrival of Emma Stone. As Jules, Stone's character is the impetus for all of the mayhem that goes down between Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, and in a few short scenes, she demonstrates why she has become one of the most likable actresses in working in Hollywood.

Rhys Ifans - "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1"
If we're being completely honest, nothing comes close to the Boy Who Lived. Ifans had the benefit of one of the series' more bizarre and morally ambiguous roles as the torn Xenophilius Lovegood. For as strange as Luna's father is, Ifans' take on the character shows a surprising amount of restraint and range, as he struggles with whether he should turn Harry over to Voldemort.

    Martin Sheen -"Apocalypse Now"
One of the hallmarks of the 70s Golden Era, Francis Ford Coppola's journey into the heart of the Vietnam War ranks among the best films of all time. Martin Sheen stars as Captain Benjamin Willard, the man tasked with heading into enemy territory to find the rogue Colonel Kurtz. The closest call of the list, it's also worth mentioning Terrence Malick's feature film debut, "Badlands."

    Sally Field - "Forrest Gump"
"My momma always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.'" Sally Field played the momma behind the famous motto in the 1995 Academy Award winner for Best Picture. In that film, she took on the kind of strong mother role she became known for, and the type she once again excels at in "The Amazing Spider-Man."

    Denis Leary - "The Sandlot"
Yes, Denis Leary is in "The Sandlot," and he, in fact, plays a vital role to the 90s kids classic. He plays, Bill, Smalls' stepdad and the owner of the ill-fated Babe Ruth ball that flies over the fence and into the clutches of The Beast. Coming relatively early in Leary's acting career, the role is drastically different from the snappy, fast-talking characters that would dictate the rest of his resume. Smalls' stepdad anchors the story with real-life heart, and, frankly, it gets us every time.

  • 'Lost' Alum Elizabeth Mitchell Re-Teams With J.J. Abrams For 'Revolution'

    Elizabeth Mitchell

If you're a fan of "Lost," you're going to love this news.

We all loved to love Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet on the genre-changing mystery show, and now a new report has come out saying she'll be reteaming with "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams on one of his many, many upcoming projects. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Mitchell is going to be joining the cast of Abrams' new NBC show, "Revolution."

According to EW, Mitchell will be playing "the compassionate and concerned long-absent mother of the show's two young leads, Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) and Danny (Graham Rogers), who set off on a dangerous cross-country journey." As "Breaking Bad" fans, we feel morally obligated to mention that this show also stars Giancarlo Esposito. It doesn't sound like there are any supernatural or sci-fi elements at play here, but then again "Lost" started out as a show about a group of people stranded on an island after a plane crash.

Mitchell is just the latest "Lost" alum to reteam with Abrams, and we're glad he's keeping them all busy. Josh Holloway got a small albeit memorable role in the Abrams-produced "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol," while Jorge Garcia got a leading part on the short-lived "Alcatraz" and Michael Emerson is front and center in "Person of Interest." We're still crossing our fingers for some sort of "Lost" spin-off show to happen, but until then we're just going to have to settle for these.

  • First Photos Of Naomi Watts As Princess Diana In 'Caught In Flight' Emerge

It's been months since Naomi Watts was first cast as Princess Diana in "Caught in Flight," and ever since we've been curious about how the "J. Edgar" actress would look as the beloved British princess. Well, our wait is over, and we've got to say we're impressed with Watts' seemingly perfect casting.

Watts has proved that she's a fantastic actress over the course of her two-decades-long career, so we never had any doubts that she would be able to pull off a portrayal of such an important royal and celebrity. But this movie largely hinges on her ability to look the part, which this first set photo shows that she clearly does. Her likeness to Princess Di has got to be a pretty big self-esteem boost for Watts, and is also a great part of the marketing campaign for the film.

Of course, the movie's subject matter is intriguing all on its own. "Caught in Flight" details the princess's affair with Dr. Hasnat Kahn, who is going to be played by Naveen Andrews. The couple was together from 1995 until shortly before her death in 1997, when she was dating Dodi Fayed. The Playlist reports that the movie will show a side of Diana that people never got to see before: "a damaged person who stalks the doctor after he ends the affair."

    Naomi Watts Diana

We're going to assume that this portrayal will likely ruffle a few feathers, but it's a story that deserves to be told based on people's continued fascination with Diana in the 15 years after her passing. We're intrigued to see how "Caught in Flight" will handle such a touchy subject matter, but it will likely be with care considering what a good job they've done to make Watts look as spot-on as possible.

Were you expecting Watts to be such a dead-ringer for Princess Diana? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

  • Michael Fassbender Stars In Christopher Nolan's James Bond Fan Trailer

    Fassbender Bond

A video making the rounds on movie blogs today imagines what a James Bond movie would be like if it starred Michael Fassbender with Christopher Nolan behind the camera. That specific combination has been a favorite of theorists since Empire ran its "Dark Knight Rises" story.

Nolan said that he stood by his previous ambitions to direct a 007 movie, but for him, it all comes down to timing. "It would have to be the right situation and the right time in their cycle of things," he told the magazine.

Most took that ambiguous quote to mean that Nolan wouldn't consider making a James Bond movie until he could start from scratch with a new actor in the lead. Curiously, anytime someone suggested an actor from Nolan's take on the superspy, Fassbender's name would crop up.

You can check out the fan-made trailer after the jump!

We can't help but agree that the combination of Nolan and Fassbender seems like an inspired choice for any movie, especially a Bond film, but we're not so sure that Nolan needs to wait around for a new actor to take his crack at the character

With "Skyfall," Daniel Craig will get his third chance at playing one of the most famous characters in movie history. This will be his chance to really decide what kind of Bond he'll be and whether "Quantum of Solace" was a fluke. As enticing as the Fassbender-Nolan theory is, let's enjoy this Bond while we still have him around.

  • 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Concept Art Examines New Cobra Commando

    G.I. Joe

It might be eight more months until "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" hits movie theaters, but that doesn't mean we can't get excited over what the film has in store for us...all over again.

G.I. Joe-Con 2012 just took place in New Orleans, and some interesting concept art has made its way online courtesy of GeneralJoes.com. The site attended a behind-the-scenes look at "Retaliation," where some of the work contributed to the film by Hasbro employee Logan Lubera was put on display. It shows everything from the early designs for Roadblock and Lady Jayne to the weaponry made for the movie, and everything looks pretty darn slick.

The concept art also details some of the many vehicles we'll see in the upcoming "G.I. Joe" movie. The presentation clarified some elements of Jinx's yellow mountain fighting suit, which was designed to not only separate her from the Red Ninjas she's fighting but also as "an homage to Bruce Lee in 'Enter the Dragon."

"Throughout the entirety of the film, their main desire was to bring G.I. Joe back down to Earth," the website writes. "Make it much more gritty and realistic military action film, drawing back the super hero 'shiny armor' elements. Focus much more tightly on quick-paced, character themed action and much less on huge spectacle and special effects."

If you (like us) are feeling the pain of not having a "G.I. Joe" movie come out this summer as we had expected, this concept art is definitely worth a look. It's nice to at least have a sense of how this movie will stylistically differ from its predecessor, "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra."

  • Rated R Rules: 'Ted' And 'Magic Mike' Win Box Office

    Ted

    FROM MTV NEWS

The weekend's box office results stood out for a number of reasons, and no, not all of those reasons were Channing Tatum's abdominals. "Ted" owned the box office, despite being an original concept, R-rated, and not about a superhero.

The comedic feature film debut from "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane took in $54.1 million, a record for an original R-rated comedy. The original "Hangover" previously held the record with the significantly less total of $45 million.

Both "Ted" and its competition, "Magic Mike," wildly out-performed the estimates analysts had predicted toward the end of last week. The Steven Soderbergh-directed stripper drama skewed toward female movie-goers (surprise!) and raked in $39.2 million.

The two movies hopefully made big statements about the benefits of releasing adult-oriented films with interesting concepts, since this year—per usual—the box office has been dominated by YA adaptations, TV remakes, and one great, big superhero movie.

Head over to MTV News to read more about this week's box office results.

  • 'Amazing Spider-Man' Stars Sling Dating Advice In After Hours!

In many respects, Spider-Man makes for a great role model. "With great power comes great responsibility" is a mantra to live by in your everyday life. But when it comes to dating advice, the wall-crawler should not be the first person you look to.

In the latest episode of After Hours, MTV News' Josh Horowitz walks through the life lessons learned from "The Amazing Spider-Man" with stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone to see if any of it is applicable to the dating world.

Some takeaways: girls love it when you randomly appear at their windows. Taking secret pictures of them, however, is frowned upon.

And fellas, just remember what Andrew Garfield says. It is your duty to aim your web accurately.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" hits theaters July 3.

  • 'Django Unchained' Spot Reveals Old Man Samuel L. Jackson

    Django Unchained

The first trailer for Quentin Tarantino's new Southern never had the attitude of what we expected from the master of genre mash-up. What he promised for his new film hybrid was a Sergio Leone-style Spaghetti Western, set in the cruel world of the pre-Civil War South.

Instead, we got James Brown and a more "Jackie Brown" vibe, but this new one-minute spot for "Django Unchained" (via Yahoo! Movies) switches up the music, letting us see more of what we can expect from Tarantino his time around.

Check out the new trailer after the jump!

The music you're hearing is a remix of Ennio Morricone's original score from Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." It gives much of the same footage from the first trailer a very different, more Western flavor.

Another key ingredient missing from the first trailer was Samuel L. Jackson, a Tarantino regular. In "Django Unchained," Jackson plays Stephen, one of Calvin Candie's slaves, who holds a great deal of sway over his master.

For Stephen, Jackson ups his on-screen age with the help of some makeup and white hair. He shows up twice, albeit briefly, but long enough to make it count for fans eager to see what kinds of crazy he pulls off this time.

"Django Unchained" opens in theaters on December 25. Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, and Leonardo DiCaprio also star in the film.
