  • 'John Carter' Wasn't A Failure, Taylor Kitsch Says

Taylor Kitsch might not be the definition of a classy gentleman — he did too much boozing and womanizing on "Friday Night Lights" for us to ever look at him that way — but he's certainly as cool as they come. Even in the midst of all the backlash surrounding the whole lot of money "John Carter" didn't make, Kitsch is out and proud in saying he'd gladly return to Barsoom again.

"I would do 'John Carter' again tomorrow," he told CNN. "I'm very proud of 'John Carter.' Box office doesn't validate me as a person, or as an actor."

Elsewhere, Kitsch told Yahoo (via Blastr) about his thoughts on the overall "Carter" box office performance: "I don't see it as a failure, that's the thing. I'm incredibly proud of it, and I would do it all over again … If someone told me that my first lead film will make well over 300 million dollars, that's a good thing."

"I know personally I literally did everything possible I could have in John Carter, and in Battleship and in Savages," he added. "That's why I prep so hard, and why I push myself so hard, so I can have no regrets."

Big props for standing by your flick, Taylor. Here's hoping for bigger and brighter things with "Battleship" and "Savages." Speaking of that last one, I recommend staying tuned to this space in the coming days…

Do you see "John Carter" as a failure? If so, was it Kitsch's fault? Tell us in the comments section or on Twitter!

  • 'People Like Us' Will Make You Laugh And Cry, Director Alex Kurtzman Says

If the name Alex Kurtzman doesn't immediately ring a bell, his impressive body of work certainly will. Kurtzman is one half of the dynamic writing/producing team that has helped bring us a variety of action adventures over the years, like the "Star Trek" reboot and its upcoming sequel, the "Transformers" films, and the long awaited "Ender's Game" adaptation.

As if he didn't already have enough on his plate, this summer we'll be getting our first look at Kurtzman's work as a director with the release of "People Like Us," starring Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks and Michelle Pfeiffer. The film revolves around a man who is tasked with delivering a $150,000 inheritance to a sister he has never met and is based on the real-life experiences of its writing team, Kurtzman, Bob Orci and Jody Lambert.

Despite the lack of explosions and action sequences in the recently-released trailer, the character-centric story is one that Kurtzman has wanted to tell since before he started his illustrious Hollywood career. When MTV News caught up with the busy man recently, he shared a few details about the genesis of the story and why it is a true labor of love for everyone involved.

"The story starts back when Bob and I met in high school," Kurtzman said of their longtime partnership that began with a shared love for Steven Soderbergh's autobiographical book about the making of his groundbreaking Indie, "Sex, Lies and Videotape." "We really wanted to tell a personal story, we were very inspired by artists who had told personal stories but we didn't have much to say [at the time], we always knew we wanted to come back to something that brought us together in the first place."

Fast-forward a few decades to a moment of almost divine intervention when Kurtzman met his half-sister at age 30.

"My dad had had another family before us, it wasn't a secret but there was a huge age gap," he explained. "We were separated by 15 years and geography and didn't know each other. One afternoon I was sitting in my backyard thinking about how to get in touch with them at some point and this image came to me, it ended up being the last image of the movie. I thought 'That's where I want to get to' and thought maybe there's a story here. Three hours later I walked into a party and a woman walked up to me and said 'I'm your sister.' So it was a sign I guess you'd call it."

Incredibly, Kurtzman wasn't the only one to have discovered family later in life.

"When I told Bob he said, 'My aunt had a secret family that she didn't know about until she was much older.' While my family wasn't a secret, we started comparing notes and realized that our stories would blend really well."

Kurtzman hopes that audiences will laugh as much as they'll cry, and that they'll enjoy the characters' journey as much as Kurtzman, Orci and Lambert did in writing it.

"It took seven years to write, which is very rare for us. We're used to being on a train that kind of throws us out of the station really fast and we have to keep up with it," Kurtzman said. "That script was like a warm blanket for me for seven years. It was always the thing I could go back to and live in and luxuriate in."

"People Like Us" opens June 29, coincidentally the same day as Soderbergh's latest, "Magic Mike."

"It's a weird full-circle moment," Kurtzman laughed about the release dates.

  • 'Dumb And Dumber' Sequel Ideas Live Up To The Name

From Aspen with love, a true blue "Dumb and Dumber" sequel is actually happening! Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are back on board with the Farrelly Brothers for another round of stupid mayhem, and to say we're pumped over here is a pretty big understatement.

In fact, the MTV Movies team is so jazzed by the impending return of Harry and Lloyd that we couldn't help ourselves from conjuring up some sequel ideas, "Anchorman" style. Embrace your inner idiot with us after the jump!

» Kevin Sullivan: "Having been on the no-flight watchlist since he ran through airport security in 1994, Lloyd Christmas sparks an international incident when he and his friend, Harry Dunne, decide to take a much needed vacation to the Middle East. Of course, Harry and Lloyd didn't really mean to travel to Afghanistan, so they set on a roadtrip to make their return flight and avoid starting World War III without even knowing it."

» Marvin Van Buren: "Riffing on that, in my version of the sequel, Harry and Lloyd accidentally confront a Nobel Prize winning terrorist that plans to steal weapon codes. The conflict begins when Lloyd (still at his taxi job) finds an iPhone filled with machine language left by a mysterious man. The key villain should be played by William Defoe or Christoph Waltz."

» Brian Phares: "Here's mine: in a world where two men are dumb, one undergoes a procedure to become the world's greatest super genius, the other exacts an overly elaborate and dumbfoundingly stupid heist to get his friend back, and make him dumb again."

» Ryan Rigley: "Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne once again find themselves at the center of a crime-related debacle as the search for their beloved Shaggin' Wagon leads them to Detroit, Michigan. The two buffoons soon discover that their doggy van's new owner is a man named Woof Williams, an aspiring rapper that also happens to be Detroit's most powerful druglord. Realizing that Lloyd and Harry aren't the brightest crayons in the box, Woof convinces them to unwittingly take part in a large-scale bank robbery which lands the two of them behind bars in one of the toughest prisons in the country."

» Josh Wigler: "I like Ryan's idea. As long as they meet this guy in prison."

  • Roland Emmerich Takes 'White House Down': Is It A Secret 'Independence Day' Sequel?

    by Ryan Rigley

What do you get when you take "Die Hard" and "Air Force One" and smash them both together? Why, Roland Emmerich's next blockbuster of course!

Enter "White House Down," a movie that's being described as "Die Hard" in the White House. Not much is known about the project other than its premise as a "paramilitary takeover of the White House."

Of course, those of you who know Emmerich will note that this isn't the first time that the director has tackled this presidential palace... in fact, arguably one of the most famous scenes in Emmerich's entire career involved a huge alien spaceship blowing up the White House and everyone left inside. Which has us thinking, how much cooler would "White House Down" be if it were secretly an "Independence Day" sequel?

For the two of you who aren't familiar with Emmerich's "Independence Day," it followed Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, and a handful of other famous actors as they fought against an evil alien race hellbent on invading and destroying the Earth. "ID4" continues to be a widely celebrated movie, as it is often played on a number of cable networks each and every year.

Here's what we have in mind for the sequel: A small faction of aliens manage to covertly sneak into the White House, incapacitating the President, his family, and his top men and holding them hostage. Refusing to release them unless all of Earth meets with their unreasonable demands, it's up to Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum to infiltrate the building and stealthily take each of the aliens down one by one before they manage to blow up the White House a second time.

Sadly, the odds of "White House Down" being an "ID4" sequel are less than slim to none. But as Smith was so fond of saying in the first film, it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings! Perhaps Emmerich's years and years of teasing a sequel will one day, finally, pan out in the form of a full-fledged movie.

  • James Cameron's 'Prometheus 2' Would Be Awesome, But It's Not Happening

James Cameron's "Prometheuses" would be awesome. But… it's not happening.

A report surfaced over the weekend that Ridley Scott and Cameron were planning another "Alien" to "Aliens" handoff with the "Prometheus" franchise, with Cameron stepping in to direct the sequel after Scott's upcoming epic hits this summer. Not happening. It's an April Fool's Day prank that's gotten out of hand, nothing more, nothing less.

Well, maybe a little bit more: for me, it's the cruelest April Fool's Day prank you can possibly play.

Cameron's "Aliens" is my favorite film of all time, with Scott's "Alien" not far behind. (Yes, I'm one of those "'Aliens' over 'Alien'" guys, so sue me!) The fact that this universe I adore is returning with the original mastermind in tow is nothing short of dumbfounding for me; without a doubt, "Prometheus" is my most anticipated movie of the year, no questions asked. Just the idea of Scott and Cameron collaborating on a second "Prometheus" movie is enough to drive me insane. (Scott's already talked about how he wants to make a sequel, after all—this isn't the last we've seen of the Space Jockey.)

That said, while I have a lot of love for "Avatar," it's not because of the story. It's the visuals, the pacing, the action. Cameron's still got all of that down pat, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with him entering the world of "Prometheus" without Scott and Damon Lindelof's direct input on the story, working in a producer capacity at the least.

And with that said, there's almost no reason to even contemplate the possibility, because it just ain't happening. Cameron on "Prometheus 2" is not even a rumor—it's a prank. Don't buy the hype, kids. (Though if you want to start your write-in campaigns, you can certainly send those my way for a signature or three…)

Would you be up for Cameron's "Prometheus" sequel? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!

  • 'Titanic' Vs. 'Downton Abbey': Julian Fellowes Weighs In!

Not since 1912 has there been so much interest in the Titanic. (Of course that could also be said of 1997 when James Cameron released the film that launched Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio to next levels of famous).

Between the re-release of that film, the anniversary of the historic sinking and the soon-to-be-released mini-series from "Downton Abbey" creator, Julian Fellowes, everyone seems to have the Titanic on the brain. Fellowes recently opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about the mini-series, explaining that it's not quite "Downton Abbey" on a ship.

"People want it to be, but it's more complicated than that. 'Titanic' isn't just about people and their servants," he explained. "It's about all of these people from different worlds coming together on one ship. My theory on disaster, though it's a bit nanny, is that disaster brings out the best of you."

It's not the first time Fellowes has looked to the Titanic for inspiration. The sinking of the ship set off the entire set of events on that other critically-acclaimed, fan-loved mini, "Downton." Fellowes admits he's got a bit of an obsession with that time period.

"I think I may be a bit obsessed with 'Titanic.' But I used it in 'Downton Abbey' for a different reason. By using something iconic, you don't need to explain as much. Very few people can't place the approximate time period of the 'Titanic' sinking. It's really a cheat," he said. "It's a piece of shorthand so that you don't need references to other parts of history. But yes, I am very interested in Titanic."

So, how does it differ from Cameron's "Titanic" which is being re-released this week?

"Clearly Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have captured the imaginations of a whole generation. But that was a movie – it's a different kind of experience with a huge budget and special effects," he said. "Our version is more of an analysis of who is on the ship and interlocking stories that are more suited to television. You couldn't have done our treatment in a movie. And I'm certainly going to see the movie in 3D."

Tell us what you think of Fellowes' take on "Titanic" in the comments or on Twitter!

  • 'Rock Of Ages' Trailer: Tom Cruise Monkeys Around

    Rock of Ages

If you were disappointed by the severe lack of Tom Cruise in the last "Rock of Ages" trailer, today's release of the musical film's second spot should take care of your ails. The Stacee Jaxx is front and center this time around, monkey in tow, even as plenty of other characters — played by Alec Baldwin, Malin Akerman, Russell Brand and more — get the spotlight as well.

But seriously, if today's trailer is any indication, Cruise really is going to light this place on fire — and that's judging only by one brief glimmer of "Dead or Alive." Fun stuff!

Check out the full trailer over here.
