• 'The Voice' Recap: Four Singers Get The Ax

Team Blake's Charlotte Sometimes and Naia Kete and Team Christina's Sera Hill and Moses Stone are all eliminated after first live show.

On Monday night, the 12 members of Teams Christina and Blake took the stage for the first "Voice" live show of the season, and on Tuesday night (April 3), four contestants were sent packing after being voted off by the public and not saved by their team coach.

The public's top three vote-getters were announced in no particular order following a performance by Gym Class Heroes that featured Team Adam, which will hit the ring with Team Cee Lo next week for its first shot on the live stage. The bottom three on each team were given one last shot at moving forward to the live quarter finals; they could earn their coach's lone "save" if they beat their other two teammates in a sing-off.

First, though, both coaches took their teams on insider-y trips to a country radio station (Blake) and "The Tonight Show" (Christina) so they could get a feel for what it's really like to promote themselves in the music industry. Proving that they are actually invested in their teams (one of the many virtues "The Voice" has over its reality singing-competition rivals), Shelton and Aguilera both offered their teams a nice foot in the door: Blake announced that he was putting together an acoustic concert for his team, while Team Christina got them face time with Leno before letting them hit the stage at the "Tonight Show" to perform as a team.

But then it was right down to business. From Team Blake, host Carson Daly announced that belter Erin Willett, former Alicia Keys backup singer/dancer Jermaine Paul and teenage country singer RaeLynn attracted the most votes, leaving Charlotte Sometimes, Jordis Unga and Naia Kete on the chopping block.

All three delivered solid-if-unspectacular performances. Street performer Naia whisper-sang her way through Beyoncé's "If I Were a Boy," prompting Blake to say he wished she focused on the reggae that comes naturally to her. Charlotte's unusual vocal flourishes complemented the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" well, but Jordis benefited from picking a particularly well-suited song ("Wild Horses") and won the support of Aguilera, Levine and Green and, most importantly, Blake, who did not hesitate in saving Jordis, though he had nothing but kind words for the two contestants he sent packing.

The early favorites from Team Christina also earned a reprieve from America, as soulful Jesse Campbell, scene-stealer Lindsey Pavao and classically trained Chris Mann earned the most votes from the public. That meant Ashley De La Rosa, Moses Stone and (crazily) Sera Hill were up for elimination if their last-chance performance didn't satisfy their picky diva coach.

Up first was Ashley, followed by Sera, who tore into Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love" like it was her own. Moses Stone hit the stage next, and the MC proved his chops as a singer were a force with a nice take on "Falling to Pieces."

The judges were more divided than they were with Team Blake. Cee Lo thought Sera was tops, while Adam and Blake were impressed with Ashley. Ultimately, so was Christina, who opted to send Sera and Moses home — but not before adding what became the theme of the night: "This is only the beginning."

Moving On
Team Blake
» Erin Willett
» Jermaine Paul
» RaeLynn
» Jordis Unga

Team Christina
» Jesse Campbell
» Lindsey Pavao
» Chris Mann
» Ashley De La Rosa

Going Home
Team Blake
» Charlotte Sometimes
» Naia Kete

Team Christina
» Sera Hill
» Moses Stone

By Kara Warner

Katy Perry has proven to be an expert tease in offering up details about her highly anticipated big-screen debut in "Katy Perry: Part of Me," due July 5. But on Tuesday (April 3), we finally got a glimpse of what to expect via the first official trailer.

The nearly two-minute teaser opens with a shot of Perry onstage, with her otherworldly "E.T." playing in the background, followed by quick cuts to footage of her Candy Land-esque California Dreams Tour and a voice-over about her meteoric rise to fame.

"Katy's just an explosion. She just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger," a man says in one testimonial, which plays behind flashes of her impressive statistics — the "first female to have five #1 singles on one album" — interspersed with scenes from her music videos for "California Gurls," "Waking Up in Vegas" and "Teenage Dream."

"It's always about the challenge," another man says, with behind-the-scenes footage of Perry rehearsing and getting fitted for costumes playing. "What are people saying she can't do? That's what she does next. Every song has something to do with her life."

"She outworks everyone," another friend says. "I honestly don't know how she does it."

As headlines of Perry's divorce flash onscreen, "E.T." fades away and we hear the opening notes of "Firework," which provides the background music for scenes and interviews about Perry's religious childhood, her struggles in being signed to different labels and not being successful and ultimately how she powered through and kept believing in herself to become the superstar she is today.

The end of the trailer is a mash-up of behind-the-scenes images from her very colorful concert tour and countless interactions with happy fans.

"If you have a dream, you're going to go on a journey to fulfill that dream," Perry says as the trailer fades to black.

Perry recently told MTV News that the movie is a fitting end to her adventure in promoting and touring for her Teenage Dream album.

"It's closing the chapter on Teenage Dream, but it's giving you such an inside perspective," Perry said when asked what fans will get out of the movie-going experience this summer. "This film, you're going to see it from my best friend/buddy perspective, you're going to see exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything."

The recent Kids' Choice Award winner promised that while there will be eye-catching 3-D sequences, they won't be cheap tricks.

"Listen, I've [worked on] most of this film for a very long time and the word 'cheap' was not in the vocabulary," she said. "But, hello, it's 3-D. You're going to get hit with a lot of sh--."

No doubt Nicki Minaj's Barbz are excited for the release of her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, but a few of her collaborators are also checking for Nicki's sophomore LP, in stores now.

Tyga took a break from his "I'm Gone" video shoot in Lynwood, California, on Monday to talk Pink Friday with MTV News. "I love it," Nicki's fellow Young Money soldier said. "I get the concept behind the album. This is her album, and she's really talkin' that sh-- and tellin' people they need to glorify her and what she's done."

Tyga is clearly proud of his labelmate, dubbing her "one of the biggest female artists out right now." He has a few Roman Reloaded favorites, but his #1 is "I Am Your Leader," featuring Rick Ross and Cam'ron.

Big Sean, who guests on Tyga's "I'm Gone," was also on set. Initially, Sean said he was supposed to work on Nicki's sophomore set, but things didn't pan out. "I was supposed to be on her album, we were supposed to do something, and then it never worked out at the last minute, but we got some more stuff in the works," he teased.

Judging from the double-platinum success of Sean and Nicki's "Dance (A$$)" remix, a future collaboration sounds like a no-brainer. Until then, the G.O.O.D. Music MC is enjoying tracks from Roman Reloaded. "I definitely like the one with Chris Brown," Sean said, referencing Nicki's "Right by My Side." "I like the ones where she's really taking it back to the essence with the rap, sounding like a lot of her early work, her mixtape work."

To celebrate the release of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, we will be examining the "Evolution of Nicki Minaj" throughout the week. Check MTV News every day to see how the Southside Jamaica, Queens, Barbie went from a promising mixtape standout to rap's reigning queen.

• Ashton Kutcher's ACM Shtick Ruffles Country-Music Feathers

Miranda Lambert wondered if 'Two and a Half Men' star was 'making fun of country' with his 10-gallon hat and George Strait sing-along.
By Kara Warner

Ashton Kutcher's attempt to be part of the country-music crowd at the Academy of Country Music Awards Sunday apparently did not go over as well as planned.

The "Two and a Half Men" star was on hand to present the award for Female Vocalist of the Year, and he dressed for the occasion by wearing a black 10-gallon hat and country-western-themed duds. Before handing over the silver trophy to Miranda Lambert, Kutcher jokingly attempted to sing a few notes of George Strait's classic "I Cross My Heart," which has been met with criticism.

Lambert tweeted late Monday that, upon further reflection, Kutcher's joke might have been inappropriate.

"Was Ashton Kutcher making fun of country or is it just me?" she tweeted. "Watching it back now and I'm kinda wondering?"

Ashton himself took to Twitter on Tuesday (April 3) to clear the air with the country star. "@Miranda_Lambert I Am One Of The biggest country Music fans you've ever met," he wrote. "Wasn't making fun at all."

Country singer Justin Moore also wasn't pleased with Kutcher's outfit. "Seen Ashton kutcher at the acms tonight. What a douche!" Moore tweeted. "I don't care for people making a mockery of the way country artists' dress."

Us Weekly reported that Kutcher's shtick did not impress members in the audience either. "People were just like 'why is he here?' He has nothing to do with country," one attendee told the mag. "Nobody laughed at his dumb jokes, in fact he came off as rude. He didn't mingle."

• Justin Bieber Drops New 'Boyfriend' Video Tease

Pop star experiences the elements in a second scintillating teaser for the much-anticipated clip.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber's Boyfriend
Photo: Walmart/ Island

Justin Bieber shared a new teaser on Tuesday (April 3) for his highly anticipated "Boyfriend" video.

He tweeted out the short tease days after he dropped the first tease on Friday. The new footage from the Colin Tilley-directed clip focuses on Bieber as he motionlessly floats underwater. Another shot from the blink-and-you-might-miss-it preview features the teen star, in a leather hoodie, standing in front of a burning tire swing.

The first tease featured a shot of Bieber looking at the camera as ladies' hands caress his face and chest.

And that's it. So, what does it all mean? Fans will have to wait until the video's release to find out.

When MTV News caught up with Bieber on the set of his "Boyfriend" video, he shared that the elements would play heavily into the theme of the video. "The concept of this video, I mean it's not like a steady concept," he said about the clip. "It's not like 'Justin follows this girl to this spot.' No, it's a bunch of amazing scenes: Like a fire scene, we have an ice scene.

"It's kind of like bouncing back and forth," he said. "And then there's scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It's fun."

"Boyfriend" is the lead single off his forthcoming album, Believe, set for release later this year. It was produced by Mike Posner and Mason Levy.

Anticipation for the album seems to be quite high. The song sold 520,000 downloads in its first week. What does that mean? Well, it places Bieber at #2 in all-time first-week singles sales, behind Flo Rida's record-holder "Right Round," which moved 636,000 units in its first week.

• Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel Wedding Details Emerge

According to People, the couple are planning a big summer wedding.
By Kara Warner

If you've been wondering about Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel's upcoming wedding, we have you covered! People has the scoop on a few details about the soon-to-be bride and groom, and the very private couple are reportedly pulling out all the stops.

"Justin and Jessica are planning a big [summer] wedding," a source close to Timberlake and Biel told the magazine. "Jessica initially wanted a smaller, more intimate wedding, but Justin from the beginning wanted a big wedding, and that's what they have decided on."

Apparently Biel, 30, has yet to say yes to a dress but is "very involved" in the planning, and Timberlake, 31, is said to have promised his bride-to-be "the best day ever." The couple also want to include all their friends in their special day, whenever and wherever that may be.

Timberlake and Biel became engaged over the holidays last year. They began dating in 2007 and broke up briefly in 2011 before getting back together later that year. In 2011, Timberlake opened up a bit about his feelings for Biel to Vanity Fair. "She is the single-handedly most significant person in my life. In my 30 years, she is the most special person, OK?" he said. "I don't want to say much more, because I have to protect things that are dear to me — for instance, her."

When asked about having to deal with all the attention the pair have received over the years, Biel told Vogue, "I don't want to talk about it. I don't feel the need to clear anything up. It's the most precious thing that I have in my life, and I care about it so much that I don't care about what anyone says or thinks. I have just not addressed it in any real way, and I'm not going to. It's mine. And I really like that about it."

• 'Twilight,' '50 Shades Of Grey' And The Fanfic Phenomenon

In 'Twilight' Tuesday, we ponder the success of 'Grey,' which began as 'Twilight' fan fiction.
By Kara Warner

Photo: Summit

Much is currently being made of E.L. James' steamy novel, "50 Shades of Grey," and its ever-expanding fanbase of mostly female readers. The novel, which is out in paperback Tuesday (April 3), started out as "Twilight" fan fiction; as such, it has several elements that lend themselves to comparison with Stephenie Meyer's YA saga.

First, there is the protagonist, insecure and naive beauty Anastasia Steele, who doesn't know she's attractive until she meets Christian Grey, a controlling older man with a magnetic personality. Apparently James took Bella and Edward from Meyer's world and placed them a few years in the future in non-paranormal-influenced Seattle; she called the book "Master of the Universe" online. "Shades of Grey" is hitting all the notes that Meyer's series hit when it entered the pop culture zeitgeist. It's a New York Times best-seller, will soon be a feature film and has been dubbed "mommy porn." Yes, I know that "Twilight" isn't "mommy porn" and that "Grey" isn't simply a very adult version of "Twilight," but the similarities are there.

So what does this mean for the publishing industry and the fan-fiction community at large? In this week's "Twilight" Tuesday, let's explore the increasing popularity of fan fiction.

First off, for the uninitiated, a lot of fanfic is racy. Like NC-17 and XXX-rated racy, so as much as I want to I can't post excerpts here. Slash fic, stories that feature same-sex relationships between two characters, can be particularly explicit. And though those tales probably won't make it to store shelves, the idea of an Edward and Jacob or Edward and Jasper romance is pretty entertaining.

"Twilight" author Meyer seems to have mixed feelings on the subject, but she has admitted to enjoying a few authors and entertained an alternate universe of sorts herself for "Twilight" in a project she calls "Breaking Down."

"In the beginning I hadn't heard of it. ... I couldn't read the ones that had the characters in character," she once said during an interview with Twifans.com. "It freaked me out. There was one about 'Harry Potter' and 'Twilight' that was hilarious. And then there was one that was about a girl who was starring as Bella in the movie and that was funny."

Meyer's "Breaking Down" was a crutch to help her get through finishing "Breaking Dawn," a place where she could let loose with outrageous scenarios for her mostly straight and narrow characters.

"We came up with an alternate 'Breaking Dawn' called 'Breaking Down.' It was awesome!" she said. "Complete spiraling downward and destruction in Bella Swan's life and everyone around her."

Naturally, Meyer didn't publish that alternate "Twi"-verse, but there are other cases of famous authors who began their careers writing fanfic; take Cassandra Clare, who wrote a popular spin on "Harry Potter" called "The Draco Trilogy" long before she came up with "The Mortal Instruments."

We could also count Seth Grahame-Smith's best-seller "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" as a form of fanfic, along with the various "Pride and Prejudice"-inspired books like "Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife" and "Mr. Darcy's Diary: A Novel."

Authors who have negative opinions of fanfic make the argument that they own their characters and that aspiring authors should come up with original work. So where do we draw the line, and more importantly, should it be drawn? As long as we're getting more people to read, does it matter? Or is there a quality over quantity argument to be thrown in as well?

By Rob Markman

Killer Mike is working overtime. Not only does the Atlanta rhyme slinger have R.A.P. Music, his collaborative album with underground hip-hop producer El-P, Mike told "RapFix Live" that fans can expect an array of different projects coming very soon.

"El-P from Company Flow and Def Jux, he produced the entire album," Mike said. "I got R.A.P. Music dropping May 15. A week later, my man El-P is dropping Cancer for Cure, so we're trying to make mayhem."

Mike's R.A.P. Music acronym stands for Rebellious African People's Music, and the lead single, "Big Beast," features Bun B, Trouble and T.I. After he releases that, the Grind Time Official boss plans to drop more material with T.I. After all, Killer's 2011 album, Pl3dge, was released through Tip's Grand Hustle label and was received rather well.

Also in the works is a collaborative project from Killer, Big Boi and Pill. The trio have been talking about releasing a project for some time now, but no music has surfaced yet. "Me and [Big Boi] ain't really got in on a project in six years, so I'm excited to be working with him," Killer Mike said, referencing their 2005 compilation album, Got Purp? Vol. 2.

In a January interview with MTV News, Pill talked about what the upcoming project meant to him. "Them two are rap greats, and for them two to actually want to do a project with me, it's unbelievable," he said.

Still, the trio are still recording, and there is no telling when the album will drop; they haven't even revealed a name for the group yet. "I'm gonna let Big hold it down. He ain't tellin' nobody, so I ain't tellin' nobody," Killer Mike said.

Which upcoming Killer Mike project are you looking forward to the most? Tell us in the comments!

• Nicki Minaj's Roman Reloaded Divides Fans

Some Barbz and Kenz have praised the album, but others are disappointed.
By Kara Klenk

Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, the sophomore effort from one of MTV's Hottest MCs, Nicki Minaj, dropped Tuesday (April 3), leaving critics and fans divided. Critics have almost unanimously panned it, but all maintain that Minaj is an enormous talent whose album shifted focus away from her clear strength, rapping, to make way for more generic pop and dance tunes.

The Barbz and Kenz make up one of the most fiercely loyal fanbases around, so Minaj isn't losing love from them. Still, many are torn about the album. Some have proclaimed their love for the album, calling it "beyond great" and "fabulous." @Craggleprice tweeted, "The album is amazing!! it's got Rap, Pop, Dance and Ballads! best album! Drake and Lil Wayne Collabs r amazing! it all is!" Standout tracks among fans seem to be "Beautiful Sinner," "Va Va Voom," "Come on a Cone" and "Beez in the Trap."

Others stand by Minaj as an artist but are not into her latest work. @Rudy_Nelson wrote, "It's horrible! and I'm a fan!" Minaj is also being compared to her pop contemporaries: As @Crucial416 commented, "It's a great Rihanna album. Terrible nicki album."

What do YOU think of Roman Reloaded? Tell us on Facebook!

While critics also expressed disappointment that Minaj split the album down the middle with rap on one side and dance/pop on the other, one MTV.com reader came to her defense. Zachary wrote, "Critics need to stop riding her and give up on trying to 'box [Nicki] in' (as she said in 'Fly') as JUST a female rapper. She's expanded into being so much more. Nearly every track on her debut featured her singing and also featured heavy synth productions. 'Blazin' anyone? 'Last Chance'? 'Dear Old Nicki'? 'Save Me'? SHE'S BEEN SINGING SINCE THE BEGINNING!!! Her bubblegum Barbie side is what made her famous on 'Super Bass,' which combined both strong rap and vocals; why are they telling lies?"

Some fans seem to want Minaj to go back even further than her smash hit "Pink Friday." @SistahSar_casm tweeted, "Not feeling it either smh. ... I miss mixtape Nicki."

While @GagaIsMyJudas suggested critics give it some time — writing, "It's awesome, if they listened to it more they'd love it. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me" — it seems most of Minaj's fans don't heed them. @MsSmartBarbie tweeted, "Frankly I could care less what they think. This was for the fans not for the critics."

• Tyga Associate Honey Cocaine Performed The Day After Getting Shot

'I'm cool,' Honey tells MTV News two weeks after Omaha show where concertgoers opened fire on Tyga's tour vans.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina

Honey Cocaine
Photo: MTV News

Honey Cocaine may be nursing just a minor bullet wound, but considering the events that took place March 19, Tyga's rap protégé is taking things surprisingly well.

"The day after I was like, 'You know what? It happened, there's nothing I can do about it but just be safer, be more aware and just live life,' " the pint-sized MC told MTV News on Monday night while on the set of Tyga's "I'm Gone" video shoot in Lynwood, California.

Honey, who hails from Toronto, Canada, was shot in the arm following Tyga's tour stop in Omaha, Nebraska. Police reports confirmed that she was treated at the hospital following the shoot-out, but still the rap rookie performed on the next tour date. "It happened, but I'm cool, I performed the next day, 'cause I was just like, 'F--- it,'" she said.

The confrontation began while Tyga was onstage getting set to perform his hit single "Rack City" when a group of concertgoers began to throw things on stage. Tyga, who was clearly upset, began to bait the rowdy crowd and things escalated. After the show, the assailants fired upon one of the Young Money rapper's tour vans, hitting two members of his entourage. Honey believes that all the drama began after Tyga denied a local group's request to open for him at the show. "I guess Tyga didn't want it," she said. "He's the boss, that's his show, so I guess he just didn't want it and they had gotten really angry and started doing really disrespectful things like throwing bottles on stage, and Tyga just retaliated and responded."

At the time of the shooting, Honey says she wasn't sure what was happening.

"I was clueless, all I was told was the venue had some angry people and you should just do what you gotta do, get out," she said. "That's what I did. I left and still got hit."

• Christina Aguilera Promises 'Amazing' Album In 2012

'Voice' judge opens up about her follow-up to 2010's Bionic.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images

Week after week, Christina Aguilera judges up-and-coming singers on "The Voice." But when will fans get to hear her lay down her own voice on new music?

In an interview with the show's correspondent, Christina Milian, Xtina opened up about her long-delayed next project, the follow-up to 2010's Bionic, which spawned the single "Not Myself Tonight."

"My album, what's going on with that?" she said. "Well, I started [it] whenever I started this show, and then [the show] kind of took off into this big thing. So the show used to be a side project [and it] kind of turned into a bigger time-fulfilling, dedicated project for me."

While Aguilera hasn't released new material of her own in almost two years, she did make chart waves appearing alongside fellow "Voice" judge Adam Levine on the hit Maroon 5 single "Moves Like Jagger." While that track leaned toward '70s-style rock and pop, fans will have to wait until later this year to find out what sounds Aguilera will be channeling on this next album.

And considering her résumé has included straight-ahead pop, dirty pop'n'b, big band-influenced music and even futuristic pop, anything's possible. But she did promise one thing: It's going to be "amazing."

"I've been in the studio, hard at work," she said. "Different producers I'm working with have just excited me so much and have given me amazing tracks and beats and material I've been writing to and [with] writing partners. It's just filled with fun and excitement, and it's gonna come out later this year, and I'm very, very excited to share it with my fans, finally."

• Robert Pattinson's 'Bel Ami' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

'Twilight' heartthrob seduces three women in sneak peek of the June 8 film.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Robert Pattinson in "Bel Ami"
Photo: Magnolia Pictures

Just when news on Robert Pattinson's "Bel Ami" seemed few and far between, the American trailer for the film dropped Tuesday (April 3)!

Set in the late 18th century, the period film follows George Duroy (Pattinson), a poor soldier who passionately seduces the wives of France's elite in an attempt to better his circumstances. But like most manipulation, it only gets Duroy so far. Once the most influential men in Paris realize he's betraying them, his attempts are foiled.

Some lucky fans already saw the movie, as "Bel Ami" dropped last month in the U.K. While U.S. fans wait for the release of the film on June 8, take a look at the five must-see scenes from the trailer:

In the Shadows
Our introduction to Duroy happens at a party. The wealthiest families in France are feasting and dancing wearing the most lavish of outfits when we notice him staring in through the window. The look on his face is not one you'd expect from a character on the outside looking in — one that's dejected and sad — but rather angry and jealous.

An Opportune Dinner
At a dinner with some of Paris' most influential couples, the women of the story are introduced to Duroy — they include Kristen Scott Thomas, who plays Virginie Walters, Christina Ricci as Clotilde de Marelle and Uma Thurman, who gives life to Madeleine Forestier. At the dinner table, in reference to Duroy, Walters states, "A handsome, young soldier homesick and alone." De Marelle follows up with the question, "But how could you be lonely?" The next shot shows Duroy with a sly smile on his face, sitting back in his chair as if he already knows the seduction these women will succumb to.

The Seduction Begins
Following the dinner scene, the trailer shows Duroy at another social event. A character voice-over with a line from the movie says, "The most important people in Paris are not the men, but their wives." Duroy talks to de Marelle and asks her what she enjoys, to which she says, "Everything." The next few seconds lead to a beautiful montage of the steamy romances the soldier has with Thomas', Ricci's and Thurman's characters.

Romance: Real or Fake?
Duroy asks de Marelle, "Why do you come back to me?" Her reply ("I don't know") and his statement that follows ("I've been a fool") allude to the thought that maybe he's not faking the romances after all. While there's no doubt that he's manipulating these three women, it's possible that the more time he spends around them, the more his fondness for them grows.

Stepping Into the Light
"There is no next life, and I am going to live," Duroy says as the final shot of the trailer shows him stepping out of a dark building and into the light outside. Maybe there's hope for the womanizer in the end. We're fans of a happy ending, especially when the character we're rooting for is played by one of our favorite "Twilight" actors. We hope this last shot is the director's way of telling us Pattinson's amoral character is redeemed.

• Rihanna Wanted To Be 'Badass,' Not A Love Interest In 'Battleship'

'I didn't imagine that it would be grungy, like, straight Navy soldier, no makeup,' the pop star admits.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Rihanna is no stranger to the tough-cookie persona. With songs like "Rockstar" and "Rude Boy," the femme fatale likes to play up her fiery side. And in this summer's much-anticipated "Battleship," she's no different.

While Rihanna showed us her softer side, laughing and smiling, during our MTV interview, it was her tougher side that she wanted to bring out in her debut big-screen performance. With only two female leads in the action flick, the pop singer landed the part of undercover FBI agent Raikes (the part of the sexy love interest Samantha went to the lovely Brooklyn Decker).

"I think that's what I really wanted to do. I wanted to do something badass," Rihanna said.

As it turns out, the role was a lot more vigorous than she expected, but Rihanna was up for the challenge. "I didn't imagine that it would be grungy, like, straight Navy soldier, no makeup," she admitted. "[But] I enjoyed it. It was a brilliant surprise for me."

The "Talk That Talk" singer also revealed that the filmmakers used real weapons in the movie in lieu of fake, plastic props. The actors were taken out to train before shooting a scene in order to get acquainted with the artillery. Asked how comfortable she was handling a bazooka, the singer joked, "I have one of those at home."

"We would train up and down, just speeding the boat, turning and learning how to shoot and handle the weapon. Two hours later, we're shooting that scene," she explained.

It's clear Rihanna enjoyed the role, but what initially convinced her to turn from singer to actress?

"A couple [of] things," she said. "I met with Peter Berg, the director of the movie, and went through the entire film and he talked me through the story. He showed me some of the characters and some of the aliens and what they would look like. He was so enthusiastic and when someone is passionate about something that much, you trust them.

"He certainly was very enthusiastic about me playing this part and I just felt like, 'OK, well, if you're sure, then I believe you. I think I can do it. And if you think I can do it, then let's try,' " she recalled. "And it was as simple as trying and it being a role that wasn't too big for me to pull off."

With "Battleship" set to hit theaters on May 18, Rihanna now has her eye on a starring role, telling the U.K. Press Association this week that she would give her "entire life" for the opportunity to play Whitney Houston. The pop icon died in February and rumors of a biopic have been floating on the Net ever since.

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

• Dan Savage Teaches Sex 101 In New MTV Series 'Savage U'

Sex columnist visits colleges across the country to give advice in the series premiering tonight at 11 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

America's favorite sex-advice columnist, Dan Savage, is taking things to the next level. In addition to his column, Savage Love and his It Gets Better Project, he's been on the road traveling to college campuses to answer students' questions about sex and romance.

It's all documented in a new series, "Savage U" kicking off tonight on MTV at 11 p.m. ET/PT. He begins at the University of Maryland, where he meets Madelyn, a talkative girl who thinks something's wrong because her boyfriend never seems to want to have as much sex as her.

"A lot of people are curious about what other people are doing and what other people are interested in and the kind of sex other people are having because it helps understand where you fall you in the continuum of human sexuality," Savage recently told MTV News. "Everyone is a little abnormal, and so it is actually good to be different and the sooner you accept your difference the more at peace you will be."

Savage continues to gain popularity. In addition to creating the highly celebrity-endorsed "It Gets Better Project," he hosted the "It Gets Better" special on MTV in February, which explored the lives of three young people overcoming challenges brought on by their sexuality.

In his new series, he hopes to bring awareness in a fun and interesting way to ultimately debunk sex myths. "A lot of young people don't have good sex information. This kind of program, where we are having fun and there are jokes and people are talking about sex and tend to be a little embarrassed, they laugh and it actually helps. It helps people learn to enjoy themselves and laugh along."

It's a feat Savage says is especially important for college students. "People are smart and people are curious, people are interested and people are engaged. Universities are really wonderful environments."

While he certainly helped enlighten the students he spoke to, Savage admits there were a few things he had to learn as well. "At Ohio State, one of the guys on the row team taught me to play beer pong, and that was an experience of a lifetime."

NEW YORK — Aziz Ansari has been keeping pretty busy lately, working on everything from his full-time "Parks and Recreation" gig to a buzzed-about cameo in Kanye West and Jay-Z's "Otis" music video last year.

After Ansari's feature in the Watch the Throne clip and his and Kanye's joint participation in Nike's Kobe System videos, fans are speculating about the pair's next step together. Could a musical partnership be in the works?

Not anytime soon, according to Ansari. MTV News caught up with the comedian in Central Park, where he was taking time off from his busy schedule to rep his inner Tom Haverford and ceremonially mow a stretch of grass for New York City's Central Park Conservancy.

After safely dismounting his lawnmower, Ansari told us of his pal 'Ye, "We [collaborated] on the video, but music-wise, not at this point. I haven't dipped my hat into that ring."

In the meantime, divert your attention to Ansari's newest standup special, "Dangerously Delicious." Following in the footsteps of Louis C.K., Aziz's hour-long special was released exclusively for download on his site for $5 and is as fresh as it is hilarious. The comedian guarantees there are no overlaps with his Buried Alive Tour material, so even if you are going to see him at Montclair, New Jersey's Wellmont Theatre next week, you can treat yo'self with this special — and continue to hope for more Kanye/Aziz magic in the future.

What is your favorite Kanye/Aziz collabo so far? Are you crossing your fingers for a joint musical venture? Let us know in the comments!

• Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen Get 'Intimate' For Duet

Carly Rae Jepsen is poised to break out of the shadow out of label boss Justin Bieber, thanks to her catchy ode to flirting, "Call Me Maybe." But that doesn't mean she and the superstar are going their separate ways.

Recently, the Canadian singer revealed that she and Bieber worked on a track together, and when MTV News caught up with her in Las Vegas at mtvU Spring Break, she teased a bit of what their team-up sounds like.

"We collaborated on one song together, but in general, I was blown away by Justin," Jepsen said. "He's so down-to-earth and very charming and very talented. It's still a little top-secret, but it's going to be coming out soon, I hope.

"Mum's the word!" she added. "It's a really lovely song. The way he presented it was pretty cool. It was my first time meeting him. I was at the studio, and he basically just said, 'What do you think of this song?' and I was like, 'Wow, I love it.' "

From there, the "Boyfriend" singer asked her to collaborate on it, and she happily accepted the offer. "It's pretty stripped-down," she said. "It's pretty casual. It's not too dance-y; it's more intimate. It's a duet."

While Jepsen is riding high off the success of "Call Me Maybe," she is hard at work on her album, and she hopes to one day be able to help out another artist like Bieber did for her. "It's hard to believe at the moment. It's definitely a surreal life that I'm in right now, but I'm enjoying every second of it," she said. "It's pretty crazy. They say it's called paying it forward [since Usher signed Bieber and then he signed me], so I'm gonna hope that I have the opportunity. That'd be pretty rad.

"He's such an inspiration," she added. "No matter what his age, I think his career is really impressive. It's pretty amazing that he's remained so humble and cool."

• Green Day, Tokio Hotel In Tight Race For Musical March Madness Gold

With hours left to vote, our 2012 championship game is shaping up to be one for the ages ... polls close tonight at midnight ET!
By James Montgomery

At this point, we probably shouldn't be surprised. After all, if anything, the 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has been a wild ride, with upsets aplenty, epic, scoreboard-busting shootouts galore and vitriolic back-and-forths between fans. So, it's fitting that our championship matchup — which pits reigning champs Green Day against unstoppable juggernaut Tokio Hotel — would play out like this.

In short, it's incredibly close. And with just hours left to go in the voting (polls close tonight at midnight ET), it's looking more and more like the 2012 title game is going to come right down to the wire. As if this whole thing could've ended any other way.

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

We've been keeping the numbers secret — suspense! — and we'll reveal the 2012 champion Wednesday (April 4) on MTVNews.com. But until then, let's bring you up to speed on what's already been a championship battle for the ages!

Showing that they weren't about to be intimidated by the defending champs, Tokio Hotel came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, leaping out to a commanding lead within hours of the polls opening Monday morning. Rattled, Green Day were forced to call a time-out, and after a fire-and-brimstone speech from head coach Billie Joe Armstrong — not to mention a full-court Facebook press — the East Bay boys showed their championship pedigree, closing the gap by the afternoon.

And unlike the actual March Madness championship game, this one has been a roller-coaster ride ever since, with each band seizing — and subsequently losing — the lead. At their highest point, Tokio led by nearly 200,000 votes, while Green Day's biggest advantage was less than 100,000. And in a matchup that's seen nearly 3 million votes cast already, well, you get an idea of how close this thing has been.

Right now, with hours left in the contest, it's Tokio Hotel who hold the lead, and stand on the precipice of finally hoisting the MMM trophy. Of course, given that everyone makes a run in Musical March Madness, Green Day have once again surged to within striking distance ... they're not about to let their championship reign end without a fight. But can they complete the comeback? Or will Tokio Hotel take home their first-ever championship? We're headed into the home-stretch, and, really, we have no idea. Then again, we wouldn't have it any other way; MMM 2012 has been one for the ages, and the championship game is definitely only adding to its legacy.

So, who's it gonna be? Green Day or Tokio Hotel? Someone's going to win the MMM championship tonight, and you determine who will reign supreme. Polls close tonight at midnight ET, so time is running out ... vote now, or forever hold your peace.

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

The 2012 Musical March Madness championship is coming down to the wire! Will Green Day repeat, or can Tokio Hotel finally win it all? Voting runs until midnight ET on Tuesday, April 3, so there's still time to help determine the winner. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — and we'll reveal our 2012 champion on Wednesday on MTVNews.com

• Watch: 'Total Recall' Director's Exclusive Trailer Commentary

Len Wiseman walks MTV News through the first look at his remake.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Kara Warner

Colin Farrell in "Total Recall"
Photo: Sony Pictures

Earlier this week, we saw Colin Farrell realize he may not be the man he thought he was, in the first trailer for "Total Recall." The first look at the sci-fi remake had a ton of futuristic visuals, badass women and a bleach-blond John Cho, but we wanted a deeper take on what the movie has in store.

So MTV News turned to director Len Wiseman for the answers. Wiseman went into the details of the trailer and how it will reflect the finished film, scene-by-scene, and even shared some secrets from the set.

The first images from the trailer surprisingly give no sign of the remake's futuristic setting. Colin Farrell, as Doug Quaid, wakes up next to his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and slowly looks out onto his world. "We actually open up very intimately with Quaid, and then we step out and realize what world he lives in," Wiseman said. "I wanted to set the stage first for just his relationship and then get a sense of the world and what sort of environment he is in and oppressed by."

Once the plot begins to move forward, Quaid seeks meaning from Rekall, a company than can implant memories. Here, Wiseman saw an opportunity to pay homage to the original film. "Rekall, I wanted to set up some elements that were familiar — a bit of the chair, a bit of what I was excited about when I was a teenager, things that I had kept from that experience," he said.

At the same time, Wiseman wanted to add edgier elements to the familiar setting. "[We] set it up in a much more opium-den, slightly more sketchy version of this whole process," he said. "I wanted to have a little bit more danger. At its core, it's screwing with your brain chemistry. That cannot be a widely accepted thing."

The flashiest scene of the trailer comes after the police storm Rekall and attempt to arrest Quaid. In a brutally kinetic single shot, the camera literally flies around the room as Quaid dismantles the police force. Wiseman said he had always wanted to do a scene like that but only just found the opportunity with "Total Recall." "I needed to have the audience feel what Quaid was feeling. I wanted to set up a moment where you aren't given a chance to take a breath until it's over, just like he would."

The setup to capture that shot involved computer-operated cameras moving quickly around the set as Farrell repeatedly performed the fight choreography. "It was a very complicated shoot where Colin had to do the fight 22 times, actually, to get the thing right with all of the cameras," Wiseman said. "The cameras would move at 35 miles an hour that were on computer systems. It took two days. It was immensely fun, but it is 100 percent practical."

Though the trailer only shows a brief look at it, the fight scene between Beckinsale and Jessica Biel is one Wiseman felt was important to include. "I wanted to give a sense of how strong these female characters are," he said. "I want it to be the actual payoff of Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale going at it; you're not watching two stunt players that are carrying that name. It's actually Jessica and Kate just kicking either other's ass."

The trailer closes with a mind-bending shot of Quaid quickly shuffling through a series of faces in place of his own. Wiseman said he included the scene as a way of communicating the central idea of the movie. "I've always been attracted and intrigued by anything that brings into question, 'Who am I'? It's such an enticing story to me," he said. "That line right there is the basis of the movie. That line right there is the core of the movie."

Check out everything we've got on "Total Recall."

By Jocelyn Vena

Jennifer Lopez has once again looked to her real-life love to play her love interest in a music video.

The ab-tastic star will appear alongside her dancer boyfriend, Casper Smart, in her video for "Dance Again." In stills posted on her official website, she appears in a body-hugging, midriff-bearing outfit as Smart ties a blindfold around her that reads "Love Is Blind."

In another still, the roles are reversed, and Smart dons the blindfold as she caresses her tatted lover from behind. In the past, Lopez appeared alongside real-life loves Diddy, Ben Affleck, Chris Judd and Marc Anthony in music videos. This is the first time Smart will appear in a video with his superstar girlfriend, whom he reportedly began dating late last year.

The video will debut Thursday during "American Idol." "Dance Again" reunites Lopez with her "On The Floor" pals rapper Pitbull and producer RedOne.

"I love being able to collaborate with the producer RedOne again, and working with Pitbull again," Lopez recently told her "American Idol" pal Ryan Seacrest. "We had a great chemistry the last time, and it was like, 'We're going to have to do something again.' And this was the perfect song. I love the message of the song. That when something bad happens, your life is not over. You have to get up. You're gonna live. You're gonna to be okay. You're gonna dance again."

Lopez is expected to drop an album in the near future, but she wouldn't confirm whether or not it will be a greatest hits album.

"I'm working on a collection of songs right now, and I don't know what I'm going to do with them, but here's the first single!" she said, adding, ""I think when it came to me it was the perfect moment. I definitely related to that. I think it's a good thing to put it out there right now, because everybody goes through tough moments. Everybody goes through hard times, and I am no stranger to that myself."

Late last year, producer Kuk Harrell teased the project, which may also feature production from The-Dream and Tricky Stewart.

• Fiona Apple Reveals Idler Wheel Comeback Details

Singer's first album in nearly seven years is due June 19.
By James Montgomery

Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel
Photo: Epic Records

Fiona Apple has already made her return to the stage — and what a return it was — and now, she's moving one step closer to completing her comeback, revealing details of her much-anticipated fourth album.

Much like her (excellent) 1999 album, When the Pawn ... (you know the rest), Apple's new disc comes with an unwieldy title: The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, though, chances are, you already knew that. But in a Facebook post Monday, Apple unveiled the full track list and artwork for the album and the official release date too: June 19.

Several outlets reported The Idler Wheel ... is due June 26, but a spokesperson for Apple's label, Epic, confirmed to MTV News that the 19th is actually the correct date.

Apple's new album — her first since 2005's Extraordinary Machine — features 10 songs, some of which ("Anything We Want," "Valentine" and "Every Single Night") she's previewed during her recent run of club shows. And the album's swirling, vaguely psychedelic cover art resembles the hand-drawn T-shirts she's been selling at those shows too.

Despite the brand-new information, there's still plenty we don't know about Idler. It's not clear who produced the disc (early reports had drummer Charley Drayton listed as co-producer, along with Apple) or which track will be selected to serve as the first single. Apple just completed her run of intimate gigs leading up to the album, though at the moment, there are no tour dates lined up around its release; her only confirmed show is June 24 at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York. But all in due time. For long-suffering Fiona fans, any bit of news is good news.

The track list for The Idler Wheel ... , according to Fiona Apple's Facebook:

» "Every Single Night"
» "Daredevil"
» "Valentine"
» "Jonathan"
» "Left Alone"
» "Werewolf"
» "Periphery"
» "Regret"
» "Anything We Want"
» "Hot Knife"

Are you excited for the return of Fiona Apple? Let us know in the comments!
