  • 'The Diviners' Is A Roaring Good (And Spooky!) Read

After exiling us to an island with a boatload of bodacious "Beauty Queens," author Libba Bray is trading in the tiaras for feathered fascinators in her latest novel, "The Diviners" (out now).

It's the Roaring Twenties and our pretty protagonist is Ohio teen Evie O'Neill, whose uncanny ability to suss out people's deepest, darkest secrets is more than just a silly parlor trick. But when her gift leads to one party foul too many, her parents ship her out to the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple to live with her Uncle Will, the curator of the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult.

Evie's arrival in Manhattan coincides with a string of unexplained murders—murders that have a smell of the supernatural thanks to a mysterious symbol that appears on the body of each victim. When Evie's uncle is called upon by the police to offer his expert insights, Effie realizes she can use her gift to help solve these grisly killings.

Along the way, she meets a colorful cast of characters (no surprise in a city like New York!), creating a far bigger, interwoven narrative. There's the loner museum assistant. The Harlem ticket runner. The Ziegfeld show girl. They'll all play a part in the battle of good versus evil that is just beginning to sweep across the country in this series' first installment.

If I could use only one word to describe "The Diviners" (a word count I've obviously surpassed hundreds-fold) it would be "evocative"—both in style and substance. Libba's eery descriptions of shuttered mansions and far-flung cemeteries were spine-tingling enough to make me almost pee my pants a few times, while her narrative nails the mores of 1920s Manhattan—right down to the jaunty, jazzy slang. Which, I do have to admit, got a little wearisome at times. But it's all Jake! Pos-i-tute-ly!

It's probably no coincidence that this very cinematic novel has already found a home at a movie studio—Paramount purchased the film rights this summer on behalf of Fake Empire (otherwise known as the duo behind "Gossip Girl.") So if Evie's luck is as swell as we think it is, she'll be making her grand theatrical debut posthaste.

  • Style Superstar: Jennifer Garner Is One Hot Mama

There's an old saying that we can't quite remember—something about bushels and lights and hiding things—that would have been an appropriate way to start off this week's Style Superstar...that is, if we could stop staring slack-jawed at Jennifer Garner's red hot hotness for long enough to google it. But we can't. Nope. I mean, just look at her.

Jennifer has always been a beauty, but we've grown so used to seeing the seemingly perpetually pregnant actress in bump-friendly outfits that we'd kinda forgotten what a hottie she is. Well, the more fools we, you guys. Because when she showed up to the red-carpet premiere for hubby Ben Affleck's new film, the lady was ablaze in a slinky, sexy, red-red-red Monique Lhuillier gown. Shiny hair and some sparkly bangles completed the look, letting the dress stand out—and even if we do wish she'd worn a teensy bit more makeup, the nude lip is totally on trend.

But while we're on the subject of hiding things under bushels: Teresa Palmer's usually flawless style sense was sadly weighed down by the miles of fabric in her Naeem Khan ballgown at the Busan Film Festival. That's a lot of dress for a little actress, and though the petite Teresa did her best to carry off this opulent look, we can't help thinking that it would be better-suited for someone taller and/or older. In fact, we'd love to see it on Helen Mirren. Swap party?

  • A Brief History Of 'Twilight' Stars Singing On The Soundtrack

In case you missed it, the full track listing for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" soundtrack dropped yesterday, and as any fangirl worth her O-negative could have guessed, the album is a mix of high-profile artists (Green Day), indie acts (A Boy and His Kite) and previous players (Christina Perri). Then there's Nikki Reed.

The "Twilight" actress and husband, former "American Idol" contestant Paul McDonald, will contribute the song "All I've Ever Needed" to the album. The actress took to Twitter yesterday to thank fans for their support: "We worked so hard! It's so exciting!" she wrote.

Of course, Nikki isn't the first saga star to bite into one of the movie's soundtracks. That honor goes to everyone's favorite brooding bloodsucker Robert Pattinson, who had not one but two numbers featured in the first installment.

"Never Think," a melancholy ballad, served as the backdrop to Edward and Bella's pasta date at a Port Angeles Italian restaurant, while the more rock-laden "Let Me Sign," accompanied Bella's vampire venom-induced visions following her attack by James.

For his part, Robert had no idea the songs were to play an integral role in the film until an early screening with director Catherine Hardwicke, who had been secretly slipped Rob's recordings.

"When I went to see the cut she'd put these two songs in," Robert told the L.A. Times back in 2008. "They're old songs, but one of them specifically, it really made the scene better. It was like it was supposed to be there. It's strange because what was supposed to be at that point in the movie was a big orchestral film climax. Instead it's this little song with acoustic guitar. I'm singing it, maybe that makes it different, but it's kind of overwhelming. I hope it's overwhelming."

Another series star didn't turn up on a "Twilight" track until "Breaking Dawn - Part 1," but that didn't stop the speculation. We, along with fans, couldn't help but wonder whether Jackson Rathbone and his band, 100 Monkeys, would swing onto an album. So, well, we asked.

"It could happen. It could happen," Jackson told us. "It's one of those things, you know. We don't push it. But, hey, if we were approached, we wouldn't say no."

Jackson's inclusion seemed all the more likely when director Bill Condon told us in 2011 at San Diego Comic-Con that an actor or actress could appear on the soundtrack. But that honor instead went to newcomer Mia Maestro, whose "Llovera" accompanied Bella and Edward's honeymoon dip.

"I was working on my album while I was shooting the movie," Mia explained to Latina magazine. "Everyone was aware that I was finishing my record and Bill Condon wanted to hear it. He did and he really loved it and he said he was going to see if there was any part in the film where he could find placement for it."

Which brings us to 2012. Back in March, when MTV News exclusively debuted the video for Nikki and Paul's "Now That I've Found You," the "Twilight" starlet revealed that Paul was working on music for potential inclusion on the finale's soundtrack.

"Paul has been speaking with them about potentially attempting to write something," Nikki said. "Nothing is set in stone. He will be working on songs to submit. It would be a great, great thing. The music supervisor [Alexandra Patsavas] on that, as well as Bill Condon, have great taste."

"It's very preliminary," Paul confirmed. "It's kind of one of those things. I write all the time."

All that writing apparently paid off!

  • 'Glee' Recap: 'The Break-Up'

    by Melissa Albert

Blaine, we thought we knew thee. Tonight's (surprisingly realistic, totally heartbreaking) episode was enough to make us forget we ever wore a Warblers blazer and made up a Klaine cheer. Why the change of heart? Just ask Eli C., the man of mystery who blew up Blaine's phone with sexy messages on what had to be the heaviest "Glee" since Mr. Hummel had a heart attack.

When last we left the intrepid New York duo, Rachel was having an awkward reunion with Finn, and Kurt was struggling to find time and attention for Blaine. Now all of that has exploded spectacularly in their faces.

Speaking of explosions, Finn's discharge from the army? "Semi-honorable," after he accidentally shot himself with Rachel, his aptly named gun. The real Rachel, in a guilty flutter over her secret kiss with Brody, insists that Finn join her at NYADA, but he knows he doesn't belong—and it's been clear since season one that eventually, Rachel Berry's star will have to shoot alone.

After receiving several flirtatious texts from the unknown Eli C., Blaine, too, makes a sudden trip to New York, showing up looking kinda sweaty and desperate. Is he running from temptation…or from guilt over a temptation fulfilled?

Blaine and Finn express their confused feelings with Duncan Sheik's "Barely Breathing," then continue the NYC reunion at Callbacks, a bar where the NYADA kids sing on Friday nights. A jealous Finn aggressively suggests that it would be so awesome for Brody and Rachel to sing together, because when you're insanely jealous, every day is opposite day. The two sing Demi Lovato's "Give Your Heart a Break," while Finn rues his stupid mouth's stupid suggestion.

Then Blaine gets up to sing, and things get...intense. He chooses a song that reminds him of meeting Kurt, "the love of my life": Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." But this is not the kind of performance you could rock a candy bra to—instead, it's the most intimate, painful-to-watch "Glee" number yet, and nobody is quite sure why.

On the long, strange walk to the train, Blaine finally drops the bomb: He was with someone else. NOOOoooOO, ELI C.!! Kurt breaks down as, 10 yards away, Rachel admits to an angry Finn that she kissed Brody. The heartbroken couples sing No Doubt's "Don't Speak," then try to fall asleep in their shared beds back in Bushwick. And that's why you always buy an extra air mattress. Finn does a runner in the morning, slipping away without saying goodbye, and in the days that follow Kurt ignores Blaine's repeated attempts (flowers, phone calls) to make amends.

McKinley's lovebirds have it just as bad: Santana's back, and Brittany invites her to a meeting of cheerleader Kitty's "left behind" club, devoted to preparing for the imminent Rapture. It's a pretty out-there twist on Quinn's season-one chastity club, and if things between Kitty and religion go the way they did between Quinn and chastity, we can expect her to reveal herself as the antichrist by midseason.

Despite the full-throttle crazy of Kitty's sadistic club, Brittany takes comfort in it because she, too, feels left behind—by Santana. After singing a gorgeous, tearful rendition of Taylor Swift's "Mine," Santana breaks it off with Brittany, all while insisting that they're not breaking up...they're just not going to be together anymore. But this is the technical definition of a breakup!

Schue reveals to Emma that he's made it onto the Blue Ribbon arts funding panel, and invites her to join him for a few months in Washington. She overreacts like crazy, refusing to leave her career behind to watch him follow his dream...or whatever. It's a super underwritten scene that unfolds in double time, because "Glee" doesn't care much about Schue this season.

Marley and Jake, heedless of an inevitable future in which they sadly break up, continue their flirtation, but so far we care as much about the ill-defined Marley as the "Glee" writers do about Schue. Fingers crossed she gets an interesting plot line posthaste. She pushes Jake to break up with crazy Kitty, and he finally does—but Marley's hopes of an insta-relationship are dashed when he doesn't immediately go for her.

On the run from real life, Finn visits Mr. Schue for some advice, and is welcomed back to the glee club with open arms. But Rachel won't let him off so easy. She tracks him down all the way to the McKinley auditorium and calls him out on his tendency to run and hide when things get bad. Then, she breaks up with him, rendering our complete line of Finchel memorabilia unsellable.

The four stricken couples—two broken up, two on the rocks—sing Coldplay's "The Scientist," while we're subjected to painful flashbacks to their happier days. But let's close on the episode's single bright spot: McKinley rerun Finn's suggestion that the glee club perform "Grease"! Looking forward to Unique's take on Rizzo (we hope) should get us through the long, cold "Glee" hiatus. See you back here on November 9!

Song of the episode: Blaine's "Teenage Dream" broke our freaking hearts, and "Mine" came in at a close second, because nobody knows her way around a cry-sing like Santana.

What did you think of last night's episode Gleeks?

  • 'True Blood' Season 6 Takes A Bite Out Of Rutger Hauer

The rest of us might be still scratching our heads (or nursing our wounds) over the cliffhanger ending of "True Blood" season five, but the show itself isn't dwelling. With filming due to begin on the next season sooner than later, everyone's moving on...to the delightful job of snagging Rutger Hauer as their very first new cast member for season six!

TVLine reports that Rutger will play the role of Macklyn, a recurring character with mysterious (and possibly sinister) connections to the surviving members of family Stackhouse.

You may not know Hauer's name, but you'll definitely recognize his face; the tall blond Dutchman is known for his ability to inspire shouts of, "HEY! It's THAT GUY!" based on his appearances in everything from "Blade Runner" to "Sin City" to "Batman Begins." And while we'd like to tell you more about what he'll be up to in Bon Temps—and whether he's human, vampire, or vegetable—the folks at "True Blood" are being typically close-mouthed about what's in store this season, so how about we all just enjoy this picture of a young, shirtless, grime-covered Rutger Hauer cuddling a pigeon on the set of "Blade Runner" and call it a day.

Are you already psyched for more "True Blood"?

  • Elizabeth Banks Reveals Her No-Puke Mantra

Elizabeth Banks is a girl after our own heart. The "Pitch Perfect" star took to Twitter today to dispense with a bit of housekeeping advice. Namely, how she manages to snake her drain without tossing her Peeta cookies.

    Gross? Yes. Useful? Perhaps.

The actress can next be seen in the a cappella comedy, which opens wide tomorrow. The film co-stars Anna Kendrick as a reluctant member of the all-girl singing group the Barden University Bellas, who must face their school's all-boy group, the Treblemakers, in a heated sing-off. Acca-awesome!

Would you hire E. Banks as your plumber?

  • Zac Efron Delivers In 'The Paperboy' Character Poster

Prepare to see Zac Efron like you've never seen him before—in his underwear!

The erstwhile Troy Bolton stars in "Precious" director Lee Daniel's new "pulpy, sweaty" film, "The Paperboy" (out in limited release tomorrow), as the brother of a reporter (Matthew McConaughey) working to clear a man on death row, all while Zac romances said convict's lady love (Nicole Kidman).

It's a definite departure for the 24-year-old (you have heard all of those golden shower rumors, right?), but we're nonetheless intrigued to see him take on this more mature role. And thanks to our friends at MTV Canada, we're getting a first look at Zac's hunky character poster! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • We're Obsessed With 'Pitch Perfect' Star Rebel Wilson

    by Jessica Marshall

Welcome to Obsessed, a new weekly feature in which we shamelessly gush about our latest pop-culture preoccupation. This week, we're fangirling over "Pitch Perfect" star Rebel Wilson.

If I knew actress Rebel Wilson in real life, we'd totally be BFFs. She says she likes theme parks, mermaids and pink backgrounds on her Twitter page. Those three things define my very existence. She's a hardcore rapper who Shooped with Ellen—a secret fantasy of mine. And since I saw her kick off her shoe in a fit of passion, almost killing Bryan Cranston while belting Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory" on the "Tonight Show" earlier this week, I'm officially obsessed with her.

This Australian comedienne is blowing up in America these days, with large-in-charge roles in hit movies like "Bridesmaids," "Bachelorette" and most recently as Fat Amy in "Pitch Perfect." She's getting a lot of buzz this week in particular from her hilarious talk show appearances promoting "Pitch Perfect." One of them being the aforementioned shoe hurling that made Lady Gaga almost pee her pants.

She's big, she's bold, she's super blonde, and I can't help but think that she looks like a much prettier female version of Jonah Hill. Her schtick is comedy gold—self-deprecating humor in the form of outlandish comments and acts performed so honestly that it literally shocks you into laughing. But it thankfully lacks that pesky Jonah Hill/Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow aftereffect of making you feel extremely uncomfortable. Instead, you find yourself inspired by her candor. She makes you well aware that she is well aware of her limitations, physically or otherwise, and she kinda just pushes past them. If they don't matter to her, they don't end up mattering to her audience. Case in point, why her "Pitch Perfect" character, Fat Amy, calls herself Fat Amy. So you don't have to. She's not trying to be something she's not, as she recently pointed out in a tweet:

@RebelWilson ATTN guys who don't think I'm hot: um, NEWSFLASH! I'm not trying to be hot. I'm just trying to be a good actress and entertain people.

Love that attitude, Rebel. Srsly, can we be friends? Please???

And she's not only a performer, she's also a talented writer and producer. She's currently drumming up a pilot for "Super Fun Night," a comedy series slated for ABC. She will star alongside two yet-to-be-named gals as three friends who try their darnedest to have a night of "super fun" every Friday. Sounds like my weekly routine already!

If you haven't yet witnessed the talents of Ms. Wilson, it's high time you did. She's so hot right now.

Are you Obsessed with Rebel Wilson too? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!
