  • 'Bond 50' Review: The Year's Best Blu-ray Set

    Bond 50

In the age of the cloud, digital copies, and online rentals, a physical medium as a home video option loses relevance every day, but every year a handful of releases almost require a purchase. It takes an attention to detail and a dedication to the consumer to make any DVD or Blu-ray worth the price or even the physical space the box takes up.

"Bond 50," the new collection of all 22 EON films, several on Blu-ray for the first time, is simply a must own for fans and arguably the best home video release of the year.

By definition, a well-priced set including every official Bond film is something to get excited about, and the films are the real draw here. Currently sitting at $150 on Amazon, that works out to $6.82 per Bond movie on Blu-ray. Each film has been lovingly transferred, but the Connery era will astound you with its clarity. It was a pleasure to sit down and watch "From Russia with Love," even after just watching it a few weeks ago for the Bond-a-Thond.

But that doesn't take the special features into consideration. The extras aren't all shoe-horned into one disc in the back of each booklet (which, by the way, are sexy as hell). Each disc comes packed with bonus material, specific to each film. That way you can revisit a film and all of its extras in a convenient way.

A special mention must be made for one detail that is stunningly considerate. The second booklet of discs comes with an empty slot for "Skyfall." That's the kind of detail that could make a Blu-ray completist cry tears of joy.

The only clearly missing feature in the set is "Everything or Nothing," the new documentary that retells the story behind the entire franchise. For such a well-made documentary, its absence is sorely felt.

"Bond 50" is one hell of an argument for still buying Blu-rays. If you haven't bought many Bond discs in the past and you're a fan of the series, it is simply a must-buy.

"Bond 50" is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.

  • 'Skyfall' Featurette Visits The Movie's Many Locations

    Bond

In "Skyfall," much of the action comes home for James Bond. A new videoblog from the set of the movie details how the production has been impacted by the fact that the latest 007 project takes place in London.

Michael Lerman, the first assistant director on "Skyfall," narrates the new featurette about the various locations in the film. He talks about some of the places throughout Great Britain's capital that we'll see Bond travel.

"On this movie compared to the last one we have so many more locations actually here in London," he said. "We are shooting in the Underground, on main streets, down Whitehall we have a big action sequence -- just some really exciting places that we're looking forward to shooting."

But this wouldn't be a good James Bond movie without travel to other exciting locations. As we've seen in the trailer for the film, Bond has to venture to China and Turkey to try to resolve the crisis introduced in "Skyfall."

"Beyond London, we have Shanghai ,which is a really special city," Lerman explained. "It has such a great skyline and we really enjoyed our time scouting there. It's a really exotic Bond location."

He continued, "And then we have Turkey. We have a large opening sequence which involves a big car chase which then evolves into a shootout which then evolves into a motorcycle sequence where we're going down alleys through a spice market, up onto the rooftop, into a market bazaar and then in evolves into this big train sequence, so you can imagine the logistics of shooting a sequence involving so many vehicles."

"Skyfall" hits theaters on November 9.

  • Anna Kendrick Is Into Some Pretty Hardcore Stuff In After Hours

There are some things you should know about Anna Kendrick, things that have nothing to do with the fact that her new film, "Pitch Perfect," expands to wider release today. Dark things.

    Fair warning: There's hammer violence.

In the newest episode of After Hours, Kendrick and MTV News' Josh Horowitz explore that darker side of the seemingly non-homicidal actress.

But things are not always as they appear.

  • 'E.T.' Blu-Ray EXCLUSIVE Clip: Steven Spielberg and John Williams Sing The Score

For those of us who first learned to love aliens via Steven Spielberg's classic movie "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," there are so many unforgettable scenes, sights and sounds that you'd be hard-pressed to pick just one favorite element. From the flying bicycles to the Reese's Pieces, to "Ouuuuch," to John Williams' sweeping supernatural score supporting it all.

If you need a refresher as to why the iconic, heartwarming film earned a lasting place in cinematic history it arrives on Blu-ray for the first time ever on October 9 in celebration of its 30th anniversary, but right now MTV News is happy to present you with the following exclusive clip from the bonus feature "The E.T. Journals," which shows Spielberg and Williams working on (and singing!) the score together during post-production.

In the clip we see a 30-years-younger Spielberg and Williams sitting at the composer's piano (Williams is seated, playing various versions of the "E.T. Theme," while Spielberg is standing at his side) in what we can assume to be Williams' studio with the movie playing in the background on a projector. The two have a playful back-and-forth discussion about when the theme should come into a scene and we watch them watching the movie on playback in order to pinpoint the perfect moment for the music to sweep us off our feet.

"I like that," Spielberg says to Williams after he plays a few bars of the score over the scene. "As a matter of fact it seems like a very natural transition into the loneliness and out of the tenderness."

"The thing is, where do we shift from the call to the theme?" Williams asks. "Is it when he smiles or touches the face? It could be anything."

"That's a wonderful question and your choices are as many frames long as the sequence," says Spielberg.

If you are a score nerd like this writer, watching Spielberg and Williams figure out when to bring in certain notes and themes is like discovering buried treasure. And the way the speak to one another, with the utmost respect and appreciation is even better - not to mention the fact that the end of the clip features both Spielberg and Williams humming/singing parts of the score together. It is almost too delightful for words.

Check out "The E.T. Journals" in full, along with many more bonus features and behind-the-scenes looks back at making the movie next week when "E.T." arrives on Blu-ray.

  • First 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Clip Debuts On 'Conan'

    Star Trek

Last night, troll director J.J. Abrams debuted the first clip from "Star Trek Into Darkness" on "Conan," but at only three frames long, the preview is essentially the first image from "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Abrams told Conan O'Brien that he wanted to bring something special for fans, but that Paramount wasn't so keen on the idea, thus the laughably short clip.

Watch the segment after the jump!

To set up the clip, Abrams offered an equally small amount of context for the scene we were about to see. "This is scene where Spock, who is one of the main characters, for reasons that you'll have to see the film to understand, is in a volcano in this crazy suit," he said.

This isn't the first time we've seen something from the "Star Trek Into Darkness" volcano scene. Earlier in the year, a spy photo from the set showed Zachary Quinto hanging hilariously from wires in the same space suit that we see here.

But what is Spock doing in the volcano?!?! We must know!!!

What did you think of the first "clip" from "Star Trek Into Darkness"? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

  • The Box Office Is About To Be 'Taken'

    Taken 2

    FROM MTV.COM

The box office may get some more relief this weekend, after a brutal August and September left the many seat empty. Last weekend's uptick from "Hotel Transylvania" should continue this weekend with the premieres of "Taken 2," "Frankenweenie," and the expansion of "Pitch Perfect."

MTV News spoke with several box office experts, who predicted another strong weekend at the theaters.

""The take from the top ten for this coming weekend along, depending on how big 'Taken 2' is, may well be around $113 million," said IMDb's Keith Simanton, who predicted "Taken 2" will take the top spot, with "Hotel" coming in second.

  • Mark Wahlberg Brings the War to Russell Crowe in 'Broken City' Trailer

    Broken City

    By Ryan Gowland

"There are some wars you fight and there are some wars you walk away from - this is the fighting kind." Such as the ominous words spoken by Russell Crowe in the opening seconds of the first trailer for the upcoming thriller "Broken City."

Directed by Allen Hughes (who has directed "Book of Eli" and "Menace II Society" with his twin brother Albert but is going solo this time), "Broken City" follows ex-cop Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg), who seeks redemption after being double-crossed and framed by the city's mayor (Crowe). Initially asked to find the man sleeping with the Mayor's wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones), but uncovers a much more sinister truth.

This is the first time Wahlberg and Crowe have appeared together on the big screen, and will get help from the fine supporting cast that Hughes has put together, including Kyle Chandler ("Super 8"), Jeffrey Wright ("Source Code") and Barry Pepper ("True Grit"). From the looks of the trailer, it looks like Wahlberg is going to be bringing the proverbial war to Crowe, or perhaps that's just the impression given by the popular trailer track of Kanye West's "Power" which takes over the second half.

    Official synopsis:
In a broken city rife with injustice, ex-cop Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) seeks redemption--and revenge--after being double-crossed and then framed by its most powerful figure, the mayor (Russell Crowe). Billy's relentless pursuit of justice, matched only by his streetwise toughness, makes him an unstoppable force--and the mayor's worst nightmare.

"Broken City" opens in theaters on January 18, 2013.
