  • Green Lantern's New Gay Light: Blake Likely Has 'Multicolored' Idea

'Maybe he'll get a multicolored costume and won't be green anymore,' the 'Green Lantern' actress jokes to MTV News.

DC Comics broke some very progressive ground earlier this month when they announced that hero Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, is gay. Naturally, the news made international headlines and was met with a myriad of different reactions, from outpourings of support to those of outrage and misunderstanding.

When MTV News caught up with "Green Lantern" actress Blake Lively recently as she promoted her latest film, "Savages," we asked for her thoughts on the subject, which was news to her.

"Cool!" Lively said, expressing her support for DC's monumental decision. "Maybe he'll get a multicolored costume and won't be green anymore," she added with a smile.

Lively brings up an excellent point: Not that the new writers or artists would ever completely do away with Lantern's signature green suit, but we can hope that they might add a few pieces of flair.

"He's going to be the leader of the team, this dynamic hero, he'll do anything to save people, the bravest man on the planet. Why not just make him gay as well?" said new "Lantern" writer James Robinson in an interview with USA Today. "What I really want to do with this character is make the fact that he's gay to be a part of who he is and not to be the one identifying aspect of him ... and have his humor and his bravery be as much or more a part of him as his sexuality."

Lively pointed out that Alan Scott is different from Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan from the 2011 movie and that the heroes come in all shapes and sizes. "There's lots of Green Lanterns," she said.

Robinson said this dynamic reimagining of Scott will eventually cross paths with Jordan, and they'll have very different personalities and abilities. "When they're firing their rings at the same time, you'll be able to tell which energy is which," he said. "That's a very important thing so that it sets them apart."

Check out everything we've got on "Green Lantern."

  • 'True Blood' Episode Two: How Gory Will It Get?

We review the big questions left over from the premiere before tonight's new show.
    By Kara Warner

Last week's kickoff to the fifth season of "True Blood" was as bloody of a good time as we expected. As creator Alan Ball and company are wont to do with their vampire soap, the first episode of this new season ended in cliffhanger territory; plenty of people were up to no good and best friends were turned into vampires.

So what's in store for tonight?

How Will Tara Take to Being Undead?
Given all we know about Tara's stubborn and incendiary personality, along with what we know about newborn vampires, we expect Tara's transition to be a particularly messy one. She won't go killing off Sookie and Lafayette, of course; they're main characters. But we do expect her to do some damage via draining. Will she even take to the idea at all? How will the maker/makee bond play out between Tara and Pam?

When Will Chris Meloni Make His Appearance?
We've been waiting to see Chris Meloni and his fangs ever since it was announced that the HBO alum would be joining the cast for season five. His fellow castmembers have been singing his praises, and Meloni himself promised us "a lot of staking." So where is he? Seems to us he should be making his appearance very soon, since Bill and Eric are still tied up with the Authority and all.

Can Jason and Jessica Get It Together Already?
It is very sweet that Jason misses his best buddy Hoyt and is trying to smooth things over. However, Jason can't keep away from Jessica, so he might as well give up on repairing that friendship for now, which should leave the door open for him and Jess to actually formulate a relationship. Jason could use a strong-willed, independent lady in his life, despite the fact that Jessica wants to sow her wild oats.

Why Won't Alcide Embrace His New Pack Master Status?
Yes, that group-eating of fallen pack master and all-around bad guy Marcus was super gross. But weird cannibalistic rituals be damned, Alcide would make a great pack master! He's perfectly authoritative and assertive when he needs to be and so sweet and kind! From what we know about Alcide, which isn't that much, he has always seemed resistant to joining up with wolf packs. Perhaps we'll find out the reason behind his lone-wolf mind-set soon.

    What's up with Steve Newlin?
We are definitely intrigued by this new twist to Steve Newlin's character. As a "gay vampire American," he should definitely provide for some lighthearted distractions this season. But now that his recently declared love for Jason has been spurned, what is he going to do? Newlin was not at all pleased to see Jessica claim Jason for herself and we don't think he'll soon move on or go quietly into the woods. We're betting it's just a matter of time before he makes some mischief.

  • Father's Day: Top Five Worst Movie Dads And Why We Love Them

In honor of Father's Day, we name our favorite 'worst' dads in film, from Mrs. Doubtfire to Darth Vader.
    By Kevin P. Sullivan

    Photo:

The movies have given us some of the best and worst fathers in the history of pop culture. A deadbeat dad can spark the action for an entire film, and a good one can inspire the lesson you're supposed to take home from a movie.

But some dads are just so wonderfully misguided, so hilariously unfit for their role that we can't help but love them. So in honor of Father's Day, here is our rundown of some of our favorite best worst dads in film history.

    Odin - "Thor"
Sure, he's the All Father, dad to Thor, and pretty terrible stepfather to Loki, but when he's really needed, what does he do? He goes into his "Odinsleep." Earth was on the brink of destruction thanks to Loki's treacherous ways, and Odin's solution is to take a nap? Granted he wakes up just in time to save Thor from falling off of the destroyed Bifröst, but we could have avoided a lot of this if he had just stayed awake a little longer.

    Mrs. Doubtfire - "Mrs. Doubtfire"
There are few things that prove a man's dedication to his children like disguising himself as an elderly English woman and posing as their nanny. Also, there are fewer things that are as creepy. Robin Williams helped sell the whole notion as something that is sweet and endearing rather than a serious case of child endangerment, but the second you take a step back to think about it, the scenario seems less cutesy.

    Darth Vader - "Star Wars"
Anakin Skywalker is ultimately a victim of the dark side, but you still kind of have to blame him for how long it took him to realize that he was the bad guy. The Emperor literally had to electrocute Vader's own son in front of him to get him to snap out of it. He does get some bonus points for tossing the dude down the bottomless pit.

    Randy Marsh - "South Park"
There aren't many redeeming qualities to Stan's dad, Randy. He drinks, frequently ends up in his underwear and is terrible at playing "Wheel of Fortune." But there is no other fictional father that has worked his way into our hearts by being so thoroughly terrible. If you think that Randy has no right to be as bad of a dad as he is, we have this to say to you: "I thought this was America."

    Engineers - "Prometheus"
    (Spoilers Ahead ...)
The ripped pale guys from "Prometheus" may have created all of us by drinking the black goo and falling into a waterfall, but then what? They tried to destroy us, and they didn't even have the decency to explain why. We'll hold out more definitive judgments for a second viewing or maybe a sequel, but for now, they're kind of deadbeats.

Who's your favorite "worst" dad? Tell us in the comments! For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.
